1 definitionA rubber expansion joint is a flexible connector fabricated of natural or synthetic elastomers and fabrics and, if necessary, metallic reinforce- ments to provide stress relief in piping systems due to thermal and mechanical vibration and/or movements. Noteworthy performance features include flexibility and concurrent move- ments in either single or multiple arch type construction, isolation of vibration and noise resistance to abrasion and chemical erosion.
2 functionsEngineering can solve anticipated problems of vibration, noise, shock, corrosion, abrasion, stresses and space by incorporating rubber expan- sion joints into designed piping systems.
2.1 reduce vibrationRubber expansion joints isolate or reduce vibration caused by equipment. Some equipment requires more vibration control than others. Reciprocating pumps and compressors, for example, generate greater unbalanced forces than centrifugal equipment. However, rubber pipe and expansion joints dampen undesirable disturbances including harmonic overtones and vibrations caused by centrifugal pump and fan blade frequency. This is based on actual tests conducted by a nationally recognized independent testing laboratory. Rubber expansion joints reduce transmission of vibration and protect equipment from the adverse effects of vibration.
2.2 dampen sound transmissionSubsequent to going on stream, normal wear, corrosion, abrasion and erosion eventually bring about imbalance in motive equipment, generating undesirable noises transmitted to occupied areas. Rubber expansion joints tend to dampen transmission of sound because of the steel-rubber interface of joints and mating flanges. Thick-wall rubber expansion joints, compared with their metallic counterparts, reduce considerably the transmission of sound.
2.3 compensate lateral, torsional and angular movementsPumps, compressors, fans, piping and related equipment move out of alignment due to wear, load stresses, relaxation and settling of supporting foundations. Rubber expansion joints compensate la- teral, torsional and angular movements-preventing damage and undue downtime of plant operations.
2.4 compensate axial movementsExpansion and contraction movements due to thermal changes or hydraulic surge effects are compensated with strategically located rubber expansion joints. They act as helix springs, compensating for axial movements.
3 advantagesBBV Tech is able to design and manufacture rubber expansion joints strictly in accordance with actual specification. Cooperation with qualified pro- ducers of textile fabrics and rubber compounds allow BBV Tech to keep a high standard level of quality and reliability.
3.1 minimal face-to-face dimensionsMinimal face-to-face dimensions in rubber expansion joints offer untold economies compared with costly expansion bends or loops.
Vedere tabella II.
The relative cost of the pipe itself may be less or no more than a rubber expansion joints; however, total costs are higher when considering plant space, installation labor, supports and pressure drops.
3.2 lightweightRubber expansion joints are relatively light in weight, requiring non special handling equipment to position, contributing to lower installation labor costs.
3.3 low movement forces requiredThe inherent flexibility of rubber expansion joints allows almost unlimited flexing to recover from imposed movements, requiring relatively less force to move, thus preventing damage to motive equipment.
3.4 reduced fatigue factorThe inherent characteristics of natural and synthetic elastomers are not subject to fatigue breakdown or brittleness and prevent any electrolytic action because of the steel-rubber interface of joints and mating flanges.
3.5 reduced heat lossRubber expansion joints reduce heat loss, giving long maintenance free service. The added piping required for loops contribute to higher operating costs after going on stream due to increase in heat losses.
3.6 corrosion, erosion resistantA wide variety of natural, synthetic and special purpose elastomers and fabrics are available to the industry. Materials are treated and combined to meet a wide range of practical pressure-temperature operating conditions, corrosive attack, abrasion and erosion. Standard and special sizes of rubber expansion joints are available with TFE/FEP liners, fabricated to the configurations of the joint body, as added insurance against corrosive attack. Teflon possesses unusual and unique characteristics of thermal stability, non sticking surface, extremely low coefficient of friction and resistance to practically all corrosive fluids and forms of chemical attack.
3.7 nogasketsElastomeric expansion joints are supplied with flanges of vulcanized rubber and fabric integrated with the tube, making the use of gaskets unnecessary. The sealing surfaces of the expansion joint equalize uneven surfaces of the pipe flange to provide a fluid and gas-tight seal. A steel ring spacer may be required for raised face flanges. To see pg. 11.
3.8 acoustical impedanceElastomeric expansion joints significantly reduce noise transmission in piping systems because the elastomeric composition of the joint acts as a dampener that absorbs the greatest percentage of noise and vibration.
3.9 greater shock resistanceThe elastomeric type expansion joints provide good resistance against shock stress from excessive hydraulic surge, water hammer or pump cavitation.

Vedere tabella I - II.
Vedere tabella I.
4 construction details
4.1 tubeA protective, leak proof lining made of synthetic or natural rubber as the service dictates. This is a seamless tube that extends through the bore to the outside edges of the flanges. Its purpose is to eliminate the possibility of the materials being handled the carcass and weakening the fabric. These tubes can be designed to cover service conditions for chemical petroleum, sewage, gaseous and abrasive materials.See table I - II.
4.2 coverThe exterior surface of the joint is formed from natural or synthetic rubber, depending on service requirements. The prime function of the cover is to protect the carcass from outside damage or abuse. Special polymers can be supplied to resist chemi- cals, oils sunlight, acid fumes and ozone. Also, a protective coating may be applied to the exterior of the joint for additional protection.
4.3 carcassThe carcass or body of the expansion joint consists of fabric and, when necessary, metal reinforcement.
4.3.1 fabric reinforcementThe carcass fabric reinforcement is the flexible and supporting member between the tube and cover. Standard constructions normally utilize high quality synthetic fabric. Other suitable fabrics can also be used at some specific pressures and temperatures. All fabric plies are impregnated with rubber or synthetic com- pounds to allows flexibility between the fabric plies. See table I.
4.3.2 metal reinforcementWire or solid steel rings embedded in the carcass are frequently used as strengthening members of the joint. The use of metal some- times raises the rated working pressure and can supply rigidity to the joint for vacuum service.

Movimenti combiinati
Combined movements
In order to obtain a functional working of rubber expansion joints is necessary that movements are compatible with the max admitted value (see table related to technical characteristics).
• In case of two combined lateral movements, the geometrical result must be taken into consideration.
• In case of lateral + axial movements combined in same time should be necessary verify with relevant diagram (to see fig. 1) BBV Tech rubber expansion joints suitability to combined movements. Data included in vertex Lc-R-Le represent the admitted limit working values. Lc-R-Le has been defined for all kind of rubber expansion joints.
• In case of vacuum this zone will be reduced to Lc R LT.
Use of diagram
• Compensator without lateral movement: Installation quote Lm + movements have to be included between Le and Lc.
• Compensator without axial movement: (installation length Lm) Lm = LT:max lateral movement = R Lm ≠ LT:max lateral movement = R’ Lm = Lc = Le: lateral movement is nul
• Compensator with lateral + axial combined. Parallel from axis Lc-Le at a distance “R” equal to lateral movement required, interfere segment R-Lc and R-Le at point A and B, corresponding to value Lc’ and Le’; they represent max admitted movements, compatible to lateral movement “R” taken into consideration.

Caratteristiche

“Spoolflex” rubber expansion joints (spool arch configuration) manufacturing peculiarities
For a better understanding of high technology profile of such a product following consideration are a must:• rubber body is made with high thickness, both on flange area and on spool arch• carcass, the “framework” of compensator body, is made by means of rings/
plates of very high flexibility and resistance, able to withstand pressure and/or full vacuum
• textile reinforcement insert are made with high resistance fibers• no reinforcement “at sight” as all reinforcement are embedded in the rubber body
Relevant advantage are evident:• high thickness will guarantee stability on flange area, with a consequent full
thickness also with big dimension and in presence of high pressures• rubber body, thickness to carcass structure, can withstand heavy stress caused
by internal pressure without any additional external adds (for example lose flange with containing ring integrated)
Absence of internal elements at sight, as vacuum rings, offers several advantages:• better fluid dynamics• shape stability. in case of positive pressure internal ring can move away from its
normal position and obstruct the correct working• less permanent deposit of material inside, due to interference with internal
elements• allow movements without any limitation caused by internal ring

After a long experience in rubber compensator supplies, used on installation with GRP piping systems, we are able to propose different alternatives, in which common characteristic is the capability to allow a correct and homogeneous stress distribution on the whole GRP flange surface.Otherwise dangerous stress concentration would be weighed on small portion of flanges not able to withstand over load on it. For such on application a standard coupling is not suitable. Therefore a careful evaluation and analysis of design condition and requirements is a must on these applications.
Among parameters to be considered are:• compensator dimensions• working pressure• design movements• flange characteristics (GRP)

Forces required to move expansion joints are based on zero pressure conditions and room temperature in the pipe line.
These forces should be considered only as approximates which may vary with the elastomers and fabrics used in fabrication and the specific construction design. To calculate the approximate force (N)/spring rate for multiple arch joints, divide the single arch value by the number of arches.

Special appllications
When expansion joint piping system is submerged in water and the medium is conveyed through the pipe line, the expansion joint is subject to internal and external pressures as arch element is externally pressurized. Therefore, the joint in this pipe line must be engineered and designed to withstand external one as well internal pressure and also to be suitable for vacuum service.
ConstructionTube• seamless, smooth construction of a variety of tube rubber
extends through the bore to the outer edge of both flanges• extra thick tube to yield superior performance in harsh
conditionsReinforcements• totally impregnated high strength calendered polyester
fabric• heavy duty construction of metal rings: rectangular body
rings bonded into carcass and square arch support ring encapsulated with rubber inside the arch
Cover• homogeneous leak tight multi-layers of rubber to prevent
the water from attacking the carcass• extra thick elastomeric cover to protect the body materials
from external pressure conditions• totally rubber lined bolt holes to prevent water from
penetrating into the carcass through the bolt holes
Applicazioni speciali
Compensatori di dilatazione pressurizzati all’esternoExternally pressurized expansion joints

“Rubflex” expansion joints (molded type) manufacturing peculiarities
For a better understanding of high technology profile of such a productfollowing consideration are a must:• rubber body is made with high thickness, both on flanges
area and on spherical arch• flange zone are reinforced with metal elements (ring/plates)
with very high resistance• textile reinforcement insert are made with high resistance
fibers• rubber body, thanks to its own reinforced carcass, can
withstand high stress due to internal pressure, making unnecessary any type of external reinforcement (ex. “L” shape metal lose flanges)
Relevant advantage are evident:• high thickness will guarantee stability on flange area, with a
consequent• full thickness also with big dimension and in presence of
high pressures• thanks to sphere configuration they are particularly suitable
for anti-vibration use• better dynamic of fluid• disregardable loss of load
For special vacuum application can be supplied with inner or embedded spiral/ring.
Caratteristiche

Hinge are designed to support the pressure thrust due to internal pressure, in special case can support also the weight of piping/device. Angular compensator installation allow movements only on one plain; for a correct installation must be designed at series of 2 or 3 pieces.

Expansion joints type U-flex® are designed with a “U” shape, to be used in vacuum condition. With reduced building length can be used for positive pressure with an external containing ring.Due to they reduced length, drilling must be offset in order to avoid bolts interference.

RUBBER-METAL PIPE CONNECTOR (DAMPERS)D-flex dampers is a metal/rubber joint for piping where noise and vibration reduction is foreseen. For its coupling no seals are required.
Fix point and an accurate design on piping are necessary for a reliable function. A perfect coupling piping-dampers-machine most be without any forcing (see table for installation dimension). No tension, torsion or bending. To be installed in easy position, in order to allow maintenance and controls.Assembling by means of countersunk bolt and flat washers. Torque 30Nm c.a.

INSTALLAZIONE E MANUTENZIONE INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE
1. installation
Verify that the working conditions, temperature, pressure, vacuum, movements are in accordance with design requirements. Contact BBV Tech in case of system requirements exceed those of the expansion joint selected. Be sure that the type of chosen elastomeric is chemically compatible with the medium present in the expansion joints. Refer to the applicable documents.
All the pipe lines must be properly supported, so the rubber expansion joints do not sustain any piping load.
Anchors must be provided for at these five item:• at the change of pipe direction• at the end of pipe• where a shut off or reducing valve is installed between two
rubber expansion joints• at a change in the diameter size of the pipe• at a branching of a pipe
In case of pipe not anchored as above described, control rods should be used. Besides, control rods should also be used in case of pipe not supported enough and on systems where wide temperature fluctuations occur.
If anchors and/or control rods are not used, pressure thrust could cause excessive and uncontrollable movements, damaging in this way the rubber expansion joint.
All eventual operations to be effected on piping (for example insulations, cover and so on) must be executed before the installation of the rubber expansion joints. Although expansion joints will adjust themselves to misaligned flanges within the specified amount of movements, they should not be installed where there is more than 3 mm of initial misalignment.
Be sure that the flange holes of the piping are carefully aligned. In this way non admitted torsional stress to rubber expansion joint are avoided .
1. installazione
Contattare BBV Tech in caso risultino superiori.

When expansion joint are installed in the pipeline, the static portion of the thrust is calculated as a product of the area of the I.D. of the arch of the expansion joint times the design/test pressure that will occur with the line.
The off-sets will reduce expansion joint capability to absorb the design movements, and could cause severe stress. Besides, they contribute to reduce the duration of the said rubber expansion joints too. Be sure that the distance between piping flanges corresponds to the nominal length of the rubber expansion joint. It is possible that caused by storage, rubber expansion joints result to have a length slightly modified. After a proper installation, rubber expansion joint resume its original dimension. Install the rubber expansion joint against the coupling flanges of the piping, be sure that flanges are well clean, then locate bolts so that the screws head result to be against the counter-flanges. The nuts must be positioned on side of piping flange. In this way could be avoided possible interferences between the nuts thread and the rubber body of the expansion joint. The washers should always be provided, on the contrary, leakage near the flanges area could result, particularly near the back up bars ends, on case of splitted ones.Is no necessary to use tight gaskets.Tight bolts in stages by alternating around the flange, as a good rule for the screw of any flange. If flanges of rubber expansion joint are “flat face” (FF) bolts should be enough screwed just to have a bulge on external diameter of the rubber flanges, between the counter-flanges and the mating flanges of the piping. It is recommended to tighten the bolts until rubber flange thickness is reduced approximately 10%.
In case of control rods are expected, please refer to the applicable drawings.
Do not cover or insulate rubber expansion joint, nevertheless if a protection is required, it should be realized without any interference on rubber body of the expansion joint. Above all with reference to the expected movements is required to be removable just to allow easy access to the flanges.
This makes easier the periodic inspection to tightness of the joint bolts.
It is possible to lubricate the rubber flanges of the expansion joints with a thin film of graphite dispersed in glycerine or water. The graphite prevents the rubber to adhere to the metal piping flanges, so that the rubber joint can be easily removed without damage, on case a disassembly is necessary.
Do not weld near a rubber expansion joint, it could burn and irreparable damage could occur. On case expansion joints should be installed underground or submerged in water please contact BBV Tech for specific recommendations.
Check flanges thickness two or three weeks after the installation and tight the bolts again if necessary.
legenda/legend:S = spinta (N)thrust (N)D = diametro interno onda (m)internal arch diameter (m)P = pressione di progetto/prova (Pa)design/test pressure (Pa)

2. handling
Do not lift expansion joints with ropes and bars through the bolt holes. On case of lifting systems are used, it is preferred to use padding or a saddle to distribute the weight. Make sure cables or forklift do not contact the rubber parts.Do not let expansion joints sit vertically on the edges of the flanges for any periods of time. Rubber expansion joints must always be let horizontal with the whole rubber flange in complete contact to a clean smooth surface. In this way unpleasent stress on flange edge, which may damage the joint, should be avoided.
3. sttorage and maintenance
What below describes the general conditions for a correct storage of rubber expansion joints just to reduce damage caused by exposure to elements which are deleterious to rubber products. A proper storage will enhance the rubber expansion joints duration of life. The rubber products in storage could be affected by the following conditions:• temperature, humidity, ozone, sunlight, solvents, corrosive
liquids, fumes, insects and rodents• the ideal storage temperature is 10°C to 22°C• continued exposure to temperature below 0°C and above
33°C should be avoided• it also recommended that humidity is maintained at 20% to
70%• do not store rubber expansion joints in contact with ozone
and/or direct or indirect sunlight• do not store rubber expansion joints near equipments
generating ozoneWhenever possible, rubber expansion joints should be stored in their original shipping containers, especially when said containers are wood crates or cartons, as this would provide protection against the deteriorating effects of oil solvents and corrosive liquids, and also against ozone and sunlight.Besides the storage area it is preferred to be free of dampness. However, it is possible the storage outside, provided that the following conditions are respected:• the warehouse should no subjected to flood• the packing should no store directly on the floor• the packing should be covered by means of waterproof
clothThe best method of storage depend on dimension, quantity and on type of packing. The rubber expansion joints should not be piled on, because the weight could cause distorsion to the underneath units. In view to the fact, that products vary considerably in size weight and length it is no practical to establish definitive recommendations on this point.Rubber expansion joints are practically maintenance free, they should be inspected periodically, every six months, for soundness. A simply visual inspection during maintenance may avoid potential problems later.
2. movimentazione

3.1 during the operation
Verify that movements of rubber expansion joints have not exceed the max values indicated on the applicable drawings. Joints operating outside of their rated movements are candidates to premature failure.Check that temperature and pressure conditions have not exceed those ones for which the rubber expansion joints are designed.Examine the outside cover of rubber expansion joints to verify its proper integrity.Surface cracks in rubber cover of the expansion joint are not cause for alarm, provided that underlying fabric is not exposed or broken. Many unnecessary replacements are provided for superficial cracking.
3.2 during periodical inspections
Remove the rubber expansion joints for complete examination.Tube should not show signs of excessive wear (wear and tear, fabric piles exposed) or deterioration (swelling, pealing, flaking).Tube be free of cracks or gouges. Rubber flanges should be sound and showing no cutting or gouging on their surfaces. All rubber surfaces should be resilient and the flanges and body flexible.Brittleness and/or excessive stiffness, especially in higher temperature applications, indicate deterioration in progress.
3.3 in case of replacement
Be sure that mating flange surface are smooth and that misalignment do not exceed the values expected from the applicable design and tolerances.
