Visitor From The Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation At our morning hui on the 27 May 2019 we were very fortunate to have a visit from author, Nigel Allsop, who told our students amazing facts about animals in wartime. Nigel is the President of the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation (AWAMO) and was in NZ for an Award presentation ceremony at the Museum. Nigel donated three of his books and some purple poppies, to the Waiouru School library while he is here. Have a chat to your child and see if they can tell you one of the very interesting stories Nigel told us about the war time animals.

🌟🌟Congratulations Y3 - Y8 Mathematicians Last week the Huripari, Kairangahau and Inferno classes participated in a regional maths                         competition on Sumdog. They battled against 23 classes from the Manawatu-Wanganui region. Each student could answer up to 1,000 questions and the classes overall score was                             worked out by the average number of correct questions. Huripari came 3rd out of the 23                               class with 553 points, Nga Kairangahau came 2nd with 745 points and Inferno came first                             with a whopping 899 points!! We also ended up with 38 students in the Top 50, with 6                                   students making it into the Top 10. The three classes answered over 55,000 questions                           between them! What an amazing effort! Inferno won a 6 month subscription to Sumdog -                             allowing them access to a whole lot of amazing games. Matariki Celebrations - 4th & 5th July2019  Please refer to the letter that was sent home on the 18th June to school whanau about the                                   change to our venue (also attached to the end of this school newsletter). Due to a scheduling                                 conflict the Marae is no longer available on the dates we booked for our Matariki                             Celebrations. We will still continue with our plans for celebration however the format for                           this will change. As the Marae will be unavailable we will NOT be holding an overnight stay                                 as part of our programme. We appreciate that this is disappointing as many of the children                               and staff were looking forward to this aspect. Instead we will continue with our day                             activities and will be based at the Community Centre for these.

     Y1 Students Make Bird Feeders

As part of the junior class celebrations focus, they learnt about the winter solstice and the start of winter. The children discovered that birds get hungry over the winter months so decided to

make bird feeders. Here they are hanging in some of the trees at school.

School Family Accounts School family accounts are to be sent home on Wednesday 26th June. We appreciate your                             prompt payment. If for any reason a family has difficulty meeting this payment please                           contact the Principal (confidentiality assured) so that arrangements can be made.

Influenza – or the flu – is a virus that spreads quickly from person to person. Symptoms                                 include fever, chills, aches, runny nose, a cough and stomach upset. Immunisation is your                           best defence against the flu.

Update on vaccine availability - 19th June There are still stocks of influenza vaccine available in the community for patients at greatest                             risk of influenza: pregnant women, people with certain chronic illnesses, children aged 4 and                           under with severe respiratory illness, and those aged 65 and over. See www.influenza.org.nz                         for the eligibility criteria. however, we have limited information about which practices hold                         that stock, and some will have run out. If you are pregnant or aged 65 and over but unable to access influenza vaccine at your usual                                   general practice, please check with your local pharmacy, as funded influenza vaccination is                         available from many community pharmacies for these groups. Other eligible patients will need to get vaccinated at a general practice - your local Primary                               Health Organisation (PHO)may be able to advise on practices in your area with available                           stock.

    ● Summary ● (active tab) ● Symptoms ● Treatment ● Prevention

     Summary

    ● The influenza virus infects your nose, throat and lungs. The flu is normally worse than                             a cold.

    ● In temperate climates such as New Zealand’s, you’re more likely to get the flu in                             winter. Some people get very sick – influenza causes deaths every year.

    ● Symptoms of influenza come on suddenly and can include fever, chills, muscle aches,                         runny nose, cough and stomach upsets.

    ● Older people, young children, pregnant women, and people with certain medical                     conditions are at a higher risk of developing serious complications from influenza,                       such as pneumonia. If you’re at higher risk, it is important to see your doctor early, to                                 find out if you need treatment.

    ● It is also important to seek medical advice early if you are concerned, and especially if                               there are any danger signs, even if you have been seen before. Other serious                           conditions can also look like the flu, including meningococcal disease.

    ● Immunisation is your best defence against influenza. Even fit and healthy people                       should consider getting the flu jab to protect themselves.

    ● The flu spreads quickly from person to person through touch and through the air. ● While you’re unwell, stay away from work or school. Look after yourself and your

family – rest and fluids are especially important. ● Influenza can be caused by different strains of the influenza virus. (Symptoms for

different types of flu are the same.) The seasonal influenza vaccine is altered most                           years to cover the particular strains of the virus that are circulating each year. When a                               new (novel) strain of the flu virus emerges that infects many people in a very short                               time, it is called a ‘flu pandemic’.
