General
Uni ts are leak and pressure tested at 390 psig (2689 kPa) h igh side, 250 psig (1724 kPa) low side, then evacuated and
charged. A ll A ir-cooled Series R(TM ) ch il le rs are factory tested to confi rm operation prior to sh ipm ent. Packaged uni ts ship
wi th ful l operating charge of o i l and refrigerant.
Uni t panels, structura l e lem ents and contro l boxes are constructed of ga lvanized steel and mounted on a welded structural
stee l base. Unit panels and control boxes are fin ished with a baked-on powder paint, and the structural base wi th an ai r dry
pain t. A ll pain t m eets the requi rement for outdoor equipm ent of the U.S. Navy and other Federa l Governm ent Agencies
and meets ASTM B117 500 hours sa l t spray fog test.
Anytime water on ly is present in the evaporator, the Trane CH530 must have flow contro l o f the ch il led water system. Flow
control can be done ei ther di rectly or through an input to a bui ld ing autom ation system to conduct an action resu l ting in
m in imum flow through the ch i l ler evaporator barrel to avoid potentia l ly catastrophic damage to the evaporator due to
freezing. If the system has sufficient glyco l to protect down to the lowest expected ambient, flow contro l is optional.
Evaporator
T he evaporator is a tube-in-shel l heat exchanger design wi th internal ly and external ly finned copper tubes rol ler expanded
in to the tube sheet. The evaporator is designed, tested and stam ped in accordance wi th ASM E Pressure Vessel Code
Section VIII for a refrigerant side working pressure of 200 psig (1379 kPa). T he evaporator is designed for a water side
working pressure of 150 psig (1034 kPa). Water connections are grooved p ipe. Each shel l includes a vent, a drain and
fi ttings for tem perature contro l sensors and is insu lated with UV resistant 0.75 inch Armaflex II or equal insu lation (K=0.28).
Insu lation a lso covers the l iqu id and suction l ine and evaporator heads. Heaters, with therm ostat, are provided to help
protect the evaporator from freezing at ambient temperatures down to -20 F (-29 C), depending on appl ication.
Note: A separate fie ld supplied low vol tage power source is requi red to power the freeze protection.
Operating Temperature
Brazed pla te refrigerant cooled o i l coolers are provided on the uni t, a llowing operation in low tem perature evaporator, less
than 40 F (4 C), m odes.
Chilled Water Reset
Provides the control log ic and factory-insta l led sensors to reset leaving chi l led water tem perature. The setpoint can be
reset based on ambient temperature or return evaporator water temperature.
Pressure Vessel Code
Chi l ler com pl ies wi th ASME Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII. ASM E nam eplates are attached to appl icab le pressure
vessels includ ing oi l separators.
Condenser and Fans
A i r-cooled condenser co ils have lanced aluminum fins mechanica lly bonded to in ternal ly finned copper tubes. T he
condenser co i l has an in tegra l subcool ing circu it. Condensers are factory proof and leak tested at 506 psig (3489 kPa).
Di rect drive vertical d ischarge condenser fans are dynam ica lly ba lanced. T hree phase condenser fan m otors wi th
perm anently lubricated bal l bearing and in ternal thermal protection are provided. Standard uni ts wi l l start and operate
down to 25 F (-4 C) ambient, and up to 115 F (46 C) am bient.

Starter is a wye-del ta closed transi tion configuration. T he wye-del ta closed transi tion starter reduces inrush current (Locked
Rotor Amps) by 66%. T he starter is factory mounted and completely prewired to the com pressor m otor. Starters are housed
in a weathertight enclosure per UL 1995.
Compressor and Lube Oil System
T he rotary screw com pressor is semi-hermetic, di rect drive, 3600 rpm, wi th step and variable load and unloader va lves for
capaci ty control , rol l ing element bearings, di fferentia l re frigerant pressure o il pum p and oi l heater. T he motor is a suction
gas cooled, herm etical ly sealed, two pole squi rre l cage induction motor.
Oil separation is provided separate from the compressor. Automatica lly contro l led va lves are provided on the com pressor
d ischarge and lube o il system. A so lenoid va lve in the lube o i l re turn system is a lso provided. Oi l fi l tra tion is
accompl ished by an integra l o i l fi l te r located with in the compressor.
Refrigerant Circuits
Each unit has two refrigerant ci rcu its, wi th one or two rotary screw compressor per circui t. Each refrigerant ci rcu i t includes
com pressor suction and discharge service valves, l iqu id l ine shutoff valve (except rem ote evap), removable core fi l ter,
l iqu id l ine sight g lass, charging port and one e lectron ic expansion va lve per ci rcu i t. Fu l ly m odulating compressors and
e lectron ic expansion va lves provide variab le capaci ty m odulation over the enti re operating range.
Unit Controls
A l l uni t contro ls are housed in a outdoor ra ted enclosure per UL 1995 wi th rem ovable p lates to al low for customer
connection of power wi ring and remote interlocks. A l l controls, includ ing sensors, are factory m ounted and tested prior to
sh ipment.
M icrocomputer controls provide a l l control functions includ ing start up and shutdown, leaving chi l led water tem perature
control , compressor and electronic expansion valve modulation, fan sequencing, anti -recycle log ic, automatic lead/lag
com pressor starting, load l imi ting and ch il led water pum p control .
T he uni t control module wi th Rapid Restart (T M), uti l izing Adaptive Contro l (T M) microprocessor automatical ly takes action
to avoid un it shutdown due to abnormal operating condi tions associa ted wi th low refrigerant pressure, h igh condensing
pressure and motor current overload. Should the abnormal operating condi tion continue unti l a protective l im i t is
viola ted, the uni t wi l l be shut down.
A contro l power transformer is factory insta l led and wi red.
Controls Function Data
Uni t protective functions include loss of ch i l led water flow, evaporator freezing, loss of re frigerant, low refrigerant pressure,
h igh re frigerant pressure, compressor starting and running over current, phase loss, phase im balance, phase reversal ,
under/over vo l tage protection and loss of o i l flow.
A menu driven d igi ta l d isp lay ind icates over 20 operating data po ints including ch il led water set poin t, current lim it set
poin t, entering and leaving ch i lled water temperature, evaporator and condenser refrigerant pressures and tem peratures.
Over 60 diagnostic checks are made and d isp layed when a problem is detected. The d igi ta l d isp lay can be read and
advanced on the uni t wi thout opening any contro l panel doors. T ouch screen LCD, a l lows for easy access of a l l im portant
chi l ler operating inform ation.
Short Circuit Current Rating (SCCR)
A short circui t current ra ting offers a measure of safety for what the starter panel enclosure is ab le to withstand in the event
o f an explosion caused by a short ci rcui t.
Circuit Breaker
A standard in terrupting molded case ci rcui t breaker is provided wi th through-the-door lockable handle to disconnect the
m ain power and com es pre-wi red from the factory wi th term inal b lock power connections.
