RSNO SEASON 10:11
i invite you to join me and the orchestra at the Music Hall as we encounter some of the great works of the symphonic repertoire: music that has truly ‘stood the test of time’.
John Lill and Alice Sara Ott will join us to play arguably the two best loved concertos in the piano repertoire, Tchaikovsky’s First and Rachmaninov’s second. perhaps even more popular is Dvorák’s ninth symphony – the ‘new World’ – and, though you may not have heard it as often, his Fifth is just as much fun.
The music of my native France is represented this season by Ravel and i am delighted that we will be featuring a selection of his most famous works – the piano concerto for the left Hand, Rapsodie espagnole, Alborada del gracioso and, of course, Boléro.
i am pleased, too, that we will open our season with a truly great scottish work, James MacMillan’s thrilling Three interludes from his recent opera, The Sacrifice. i am confident that MacMillan’s music (and also Peter Lieberson’s beautiful neruda songs which feature later in the season), will be with us for many years to come. such is the lasting power of great orchestral music – the works of Beethoven, Mahler, Tchaikovsky and Dvorák are still as important and relevant today as they were when they were first performed!
Welcome to this exciting new rsno season!
A très bientôt!

New Season, New WorldTHURSday 23 SepTembeR 2010: 7.30pm
stéphane denève opens an exciting new rsno season with one of the most popular symphonies ever written, dvorák’s New World, whilst James MacMillan conjures up scenes from an old world evoking strong musical resonances of britten’s Peter Grimes. And star soloist nicholas Angelich performs ravel’s most dramatic work, the piano concerto for the left Hand.

From folk-music opening to joyous finish, dvorák’s Fifth might just be the most underrated symphony by any great composer. no such concerns with Tchaikovsky’s blockbuster piano concerto and with the legendary John lill at the keyboard, it’s doubly guaranteed to thrill.

They say the best spanish music is written by Frenchmen. Manuel de Falla would have disagreed, and his flamboyant ballet-score The Three-Cornered hat is one of the great spanish showpieces. As for Maurice ravel’s exuberant Rapsodie espagnole and the playful Alborada del gracioso – well, he was half spanish!
