There are big advantages to a small school. Especially for boys.

Today’s men are defining themselves differently. Traditional roles are being challenged by the demands of a new type of economy and rapidly changing society. This is the world for which RSGC boys are built.

Our enriched academic program together with a caring community and personal approach, give our boys the best grounding for future success.

If you want your son to think big, think small.

MESSAGE FROM THE ACTING HEADMASTER

There is a lot of talk these days of tough economies, an emerging knowledge-based employment sector, explosions of technological innovation and a growing fear that Canada’s boys are lagging behind in school.

Arguably, this is unprecedented social change that, for a school like RSGC, has enormous implications. We have specialized in the education and success of boys since 1964 and our illustrious alumni provide ample evidence that our approach is working.

But now, as we stand on the threshold of profound change in our society and economy, we know that the threat to boys is real if we do not prepare them for a world that values creativity, innovation, critical thinking skills and the ability to lead with integrity and vision.

RSGC has always been on the forefront of educational innovation for boys and with our tradition of providing a values-based experience that instills in boys the desire to be well-rounded, caring and respectful men, we are indeed on the right track for the future. Now, our goal must be to take that strong foundation to the next level and to reinforce the RSGC experience with a view to preparing boys for a complex world in the 21st Century.

Recently, we made great strides in charting our course by introducing an e-learning component to our curriculum, providing true global outreach experiences that prepare our boys to participate in issues of development, equity, social and environmental justice and peace.

We’ve also laid the groundwork for an important expansion of our facilities to support that innovation. Along with the incoming leadership of our new Head, Steve Beatty ‘86, we are putting in place the right ingredients for a vibrant future that will see RSGC consolidate its reputation as a creative, top quality, values-driven learning environment for boys that prepares them not only for university, but for life.

The future for men might look very different than it was for Georgians of my generation, but boys who come to RSGC will not be lost. I have been honoured to serve as Acting Headmaster of this great school and look forward to working closely with Steve Beatty as we continue along this exciting and challenging path.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

RSGC prides itself on its ingenuity, resourcefulness, sense of community and the respectful, boy-centred approach to our program and our environment. Those values were in abundant evidence last year as we worked towards building a better and stronger school.

The priority for us was to lay the groundwork for a secure and vital future, and that begins with the leadership. Senior School Principal, Paul O’Leary, was appointed Acting Head of RSGC to actively lead the implementation of strategic initiatives for the school. He has embraced that challenge with exceptional skill allowing the school to push forward with an ambitious agenda.

The Board also undertook a thorough search process for a new Headmaster which resulted in the appointment of Steve Beatty ‘86, our first Alumni Head and a professional leader in education with a breadth and depth of experience that will bring the ideal combination of skills to RSGC when he fully joins us in summer 2011.

RSGC has forged ahead with plans to improve our facilities after a careful examination of both needs and feasibility. The goal is to support our educational program with the environment that best suits the needs of boys in the 21st Century. We are gearing up with plans for a major campus revitalization project that will leave a lasting legacy for future Georgians and have a significant impact on the quality of our program and the experience for students. We’ll be ready to start in earnest in 2011, but in the meantime, the team was able to complete much-needed renovations on the Chapel, science labs, gym, and classrooms in the 2009/10 fiscal year.

The Finance committee continues to provide expert oversight on the financial health of the school and we are strongly positioned not only to take on the facility project, but to continue delivering the outstanding educational program we promise our students. With the support of an active and caring community, we’ll be relying on the Georgian sense of innovation, spirit and generosity as we embark on the exciting path ahead and a revitalized future for RSGC.

“Our sons received the academic preparation they need-ed for future success and were taught important values based on a belief in politeness, respect and integrity, that carried them into their adult lives. Unfortunately, Peter’s was cut short and we can only imagine what he might have accomplished. Giving back to RSGC and honouring Peter’s memory seemed the perfect tribute to our son and the school that gave him so much.”

BOYS WILL BE… GEORGIANS.When David and Susan Corley sent their boys to their local public school, they noticed something disturbing - a prevailing attitude of rudeness that seemed to go unchecked. Wanting more for their sons, they researched and found St. George’s, a school that held the value of ‘manners’ as a top priority. Both Richard ’75 and Peter ’76, found a home at SGC in which they flourished - in fact, seeing rude behaviour later in life caused young Peter to comment, “A St. George’s boy would never do that.”

Peter was kind, mischievous, and well-loved. His abiding passion for physics and airplanes led him to design one of the most advanced ultra-light aircrafts ever developed. His two-seater Toucan is on display in the Alberta Aviation Museum. Tragically, faulty material used in its construction led to his untimely death at 27 years old. Despite his short life, Peter left behind a significant technological legacy as co-creator of the Lazair, one of the first twin engine Ultra-lights, which remains the most flown ultra-light aircraft in Canada. A retired Lazair hangs in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC, a tribute to its importance in the development of aviation.

The family has created a memorial award so that Peter’s light and energy will never be forgotten. The Peter Corley ‘76 Physics Award, presented annually to a member of the graduating class who has demonstrated determination, creativity and an aptitude for physics, was launched in June 2010. David and Susan were both on-hand to make the presentation to delighted recipient, Ernest Iakovlev ‘10.

YOU ONLY GET WHAT YOU GIVE.As a family motto, that’s a pretty good one to have. Better still if the whole family really believes it.

Well, that’s the case for the Sharpe family, whose three boys, Taylor ’03, Ian ’07, Will ’10, are the very epitome of what it means to be Georgians. Parents Stacey and Dave chose RSGC because they wanted a school that saw the whole boy and believed that a character education was as important as an academic one. RSGC fit the bill and its small size, warm atmosphere, urban diversity and car-ing teachers sealed the deal.

The family feels RSGC gave them what they needed so, in keeping with their motto, they have given back in countless ways. Stacey volunteered every year with the Georgian Parents’ Guild and the more she got involved, the more she wanted to do. The family has made many charitable contributions as well, including a gift when each son graduated and a commitment to the Class of 2010 Legacy Fund to help bring in other boys who would benefit from an RSGC education.

“With three boys, tuition was a challenge for us. But the RSGC approach to teaching boys really aligned with our values and you just couldn’t put a price tag on the experience our sons had. As a family, we believe that no matter what your means, you have an obligation to give back when you’ve been given so much. We want other boys to have what our sons had at RSGC and we know not everyone who deserves to be here can afford to be here. Whatever we can contribute to make this education available to others, we want to do. There are not many places for boys like RSGC.”

VOLUNTEERING? HOW VERY GEORGIAN OF YOU.Giving is not just about donations. It’s as much about the ‘human capital’ Georgians are willing to invest in the things they believe in. RSGC is fortunate to have the kind of close-knit community that cares enough to give time, energy and expertise for the betterment of our school and our boys.

THANK YOU JAMIE…

A prime example of the Georgian volunteer is Jamie Lint ‘98, the outgoing president of the RSGCAA. His term has seen the creation of the Georgian Alumni Scholarship Fund and the Class of 2010 Scholarship Legacy Fund. He’s also spearheaded a leap into the 21st Century with the use of social networks, broadcast emails and texting to stay in touch with our diverse alumni.

“It’s been an extraordinary experience volunteering with RSGC and giving back to a school that gave so much to me. I’ll miss this ‘job’, but I won’t miss the people because I plan on remaining right in the thick of things and helping our incoming president, Sandy Gibson ’01, as he takes us to the next level.”

WELCOME SANDY…

The RSGCAA is delighted that Sandy Gibson ’01 will be taking over as president to carry on Jamie’s great work.

“I’ve got big shoes to fill but with the help of our incredible community, I believe we can extend our reach and recon-nect with even more alumni. It’s our duty to provide the mentoring and network today’s RSGC students need as they consider their futures. It’s also our responsibility to continue supporting the school’s financial needs whether it’s for endowment funds, capital projects, or the annual fund. It’s vital to keep RSGC strong – the world needs our guys!”

THANK YOU NANCY…

Nancy McConnell was the Parent’s Guild President for 2009-10 and is the mother of Andrew, Arts Prefect for the Class of 2011. Clearly, leadership runs in the family. Nancy embodies the Georgian spirit by embracing every opportunity to improve our community and support our boys.

Last year, Nancy and her Guild Executive Committee raised a staggering $100,000, mostly through the effective management of four key RSGC events – the Mistletoe Market, the new and very popular Cheese Fundraiser, and a spectacular Mother’s Day event featuring Molly Johnson, whose talent and generosity helped to fund a music bursary.

“I am extremely grateful to the Guild Executive, the ‘High Five’ teams, and the countless volunteers who gave time and expertise to help with our events and many school initiatives. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with this remarkable group of women and value the friendship and support they provided to me. I am also appreciative of the tremendous support from the faculty, staff and Board of Governors.”

WELCOME SHARRON…

Sharron Mollenhauer, a long-time volunteer and mother of David, Class of 2014, will be taking over as Guild President for the 2010/11 academic year. The bar’s been set high, and the Guild is confident that Sharron will be the leader to take them even higher.

“I believe in this school and in the value of volunteerism. It’s an important part of our family’s values and it’s one of the many ways in which RSGC offers an environment that models the behaviour we expect to see in our boys. We all benefit so much by participating. I am excited to be taking on this new role and look forward to a dynamic year ahead!”

MESSAGE FROM THE TREASURERWhile challenging at times, the 2009/2010 academic year also presented opportunities for new directions and building solid founda-tions for the future. The financial position of the College remains strong. While ordinarily we plan for a small surplus in our budgeting process, last year we experienced a small deficit and a slight decrease in our

operating fund balance of $39,000. Only 0.4% of our reserves were required to fund this shortfall and given the economic tenor of the times, we view this as a successful management of resources in a time of restraint.

The school is flourishing financially as a result of sound financial planning that bases fixed costs on fixed attainable enrolment, with variable and non-recurring expenditures only incurred when enrolment exceeds 405. We feel that this is the best way to protect the financial strength of the College in light of the variable nature of enrolment levels.

The continuing renovation, repair and replacement program resulted in $690,000 being invested in plant refurbishment and planning for future campus enhancements. In the summer of 2010, we will invest a further $700,000. At the end of this fiscal year, the equity in the property, plant and equipment fund is $11.7 million.

The College received total donations of $725,000, of which $300,000 was raised in our Annual Giving campaign. These donations were received in the Foundation, which is comprised of the annual fund balance and several significant endowments. These funds are invested in accordance with the Foundation Investment Policy, in a balanced index fund. The income from these investments is used to pay grants to the College in support of the purposes established in the various endowments.

In spite of challenges in the past year, our excellent faculty and staff demonstrated their dedication and talents and allowed us to continue seamlessly. I am indebted to our senior management team, supported by the faculty and staff, that I am able to present this favourable report. In particular, I would like to thank Andy Whiteley and his staff for their continued professional and competent management of the finances of the College. I would also like to thank my fellow Governors for their continued support and encouragement.• wanda ho, treasurer
