PRINCIPAL’S NEWS Term 1 is almost at an end as we approach the final week. It has been an extremely busy and
rewarding start to the year for students and staff. Students have had a huge number of activities
to become involved in to support their learning.
Inter school sport is currently in full swing, It has been great to see our junior students trying out
for teams and representing the College in their chosen sports. The school swimming sports were
very successful and we look forward to the whole school athletics sports on Tuesday 28th. This is
always a wonderful event. The house rivalry has been in full swing over the past week, hopefully Phillip and Nepean
can give Lonsdale and Murray a run for their money this year.
A number of excursions, fieldtrips and camps have run this term. Linking these to the curriculum has enabled
students to gain greater knowledge and experience the theory in practice outside of the school. I would like to take
the time to thank all the staff and parents who have organised and supervised these activities through the term.
Feedback from our Year 10 cohort out on Work Experience this week has been very positive. All of the students
visited so far have gained valuable knowledge about the world of work and possible career pathways for the future.
This would not be possible without the great support from our community. Thank you to all the businesses and
individuals who have accepted students and taken the time to teach them about these career opportunities.
Earlier in the week we had our Open Night for Primary School families to showcase all the fantastic opportunities
available here at Rosebud. It was a wonderful chance to speak with future students and parents. Key Learning
Areas ran live lessons to help the Primary students learn more about what they have to look forward too at
Secondary School in 2018 and beyond. It was fantastic to have so many of our current students helping to lead
groups and explain their school life through the subject offerings. I would like to thank all the students for their
efforts on the night.
Parent Teacher Interviews
A further reminder for Parent / Teacher interviews on Monday 27th March. Please book through the Compass
portal. All student reports are also available to view. These are an important component of the teaching and
learning process enabling feedback to students and families regarding the Attitudes to Learning skills essential for
their academic progress. The interviews are a good chance to discuss this feedback with teachers and plan for the
term ahead. I look forward to seeing parents on the day.
Principal Role
My current role as Acting Principal has been extended into Term 2. I have thoroughly enjoyed being in the position
through Term 1 and look forward to continuing to work with students, parents, staff and the community to ensure
Rosebud continues to offer the best possible education for all children on the Southern Peninsula.
I hope all families enjoy a safe and happy Easter period and holiday time. I look forward to all the wonderful
activities planned for next term that we can enjoy.
Thank you for your ongoing support

Acting Principal

COLLEGE NEWS SNOWY RIVER REPORT!
Hello,
My name is Oliver Holton. I’m currently a student attending the Snowy River Campus, Alpine School. I came to the school to learn about leadership for when I wish to join the Navy. So far I have done many outdoor activities such as hiking, biking and canoeing, as well as working on the community learning project that I am doing with the other members of Rosebud Secondary College. Other than doing outdoor activities I have been doing my own washing as well as other duties such as washing up.
Here at Snowy every day two of the timetable, students are tasked with being student leader, then are in charge of making sure everyone’s on time and telling information regarding activities. Back at home classes finish at three in the afternoon but here at Snowy, classes start at 9:00am and finish at 9:00pm and after all of our classes we all head off to sleep.
Instead of doing standard day we get a lot of free time to do what we want to do, so to keep ourselves entertained we have committees! I am part of the Documentary Committee and we are creating a documentary about our time here so that after we leave we have something to look back at and remember the great time we had. I am also part of the Mountain biking Committee who are in charge of maintain the tracks that snowy students have made and making sure all of the gear is properly looked after. Through out the term we also have “expos,” in these expos we travel to a location by foot, bike or canoe. These expos are great fun and mean that you don’t have any classes for the day!
If you missed it you can watch the ABC news report on The Snowy River School for Student Leadership - an amazing opportunity our Year 9 Rosebud Secondary College students have each year - please go to http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-03-05/victorias-wilderness-school-experience-set-to-be-expanded/8326276?section=good-news
YEAR 11 OES EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING EXPERIENCE CATHEDRAL RANGE
Our Year 11 OES class headed out to the Cathedral Range on Wednesday 15th to Friday 17th March. Students were faced with an up-hill battle, literally! They needed to carry their water for the first 2 days of the experience and so their packs were very heavy with at least five litres of water on board each! Students each had the opportunity to lead the rest of the group and all did a great job. A number of students chose to sleep under the stars on both nights, which thankfully, were clear nights - what an experience! We saw satellites, shooting stars, constellations… A great way to push comfort zones and get to know classmates better. We had the opportunity to paddle in the Little River at the end of our walk, investigate a pine plantation, and have a go at outdoor rock climbing and abseiling. The last experience of the camp challenged the group the most. It was a rock scramble high up on Mt. Sugarloaf. We had to squeeze through a cave and cope with exposure and dizzying heights. Everyone pushed themselves and they should be proud of their achievements.
COLLEGE NEWS
COLLEGE NEWS GARDEN TO PLATE – ZUCCHINI BURGERS
Year 8 students planted a number of vegetable seeds to complement the products already growing in our kitchen
garden. Zucchinis they planted in Jumpstart have grown significantly over the summer months and they have been
able to harvest the vegetables and use them in their cooking. They made zucchini burgers and were taught the
health benefits, nutritional benefits and the economic benefits of adding zucchini to their hamburger patties.
Students who wished to try a Vegetarian burger were able to use TVP (textured vegetable protein) made from soy
beans to ensure the nutritional content of their burger included protein of a high biological value.
We have had a glut of produce, so some of the extra produce was made available for purchase with the donation
of a gold coin to assist the future purchase of more seed and some of the excess produce was preserved for future
use.
MINDFULNESS UPDATE A significant boost to our work with mindfulness across the school will come in the form of our Mindfulness Coach, who will commence with us one day per week from the beginning of Term Two. Christie Urquhart is moving into Rosebud with her family from NSW and she is already excited for the work ahead. The position is being funded by the grant we received from the RE Ross Trust and is designed to provide in depth mindfulness practice to classes on a rostered basis.
An additional opportunity for students to practice yoga will develop from this appointment and Christie envisages combining movement and meditation during her sessions to broaden the skills for the students. Research has shown that mindfulness certainly improves student wellbeing outcomes and we look forward to these strategies adding to the development of resilience across our student population.
A common theme is in place this year for all health and personal development classes, to promote positive health through being active (BA), getting good sleep (S) and healthy eating/nutrition (E) – BASE for short. Christie will contribute to that ethos, along with all Health and PE teachers and Personal Development teachers.

CAREERS NEWS VCAL
Teachers will begin workplace visits from Term 2. This is a great opportunity for students to showcase the skills they are developing and applying in their selected industry. Work placement is a compulsory part of the VCAL course and is used to fulfil several key competencies. Teachers are looking forward to the opportunity to see students in a work setting and encouraging them to pursue their chosen careers.
YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE It has been a difficult process for some students (and staff!) but the vast majority of Year 10s are in a work place at the time of writing this article. Work experience is the time when students can learn about a career path and decide whether this is the right path for them. It also can have a direct impact on student pathway decision for Year 11-12 and beyond. We wish all of our students a great experience and teachers are looking forward to coming out to see them.
YEAR 12 VCE TERTIARY INFORMATION SESSIONS Students will get the opportunity to take part in a session that will explain how the VTAC tertiary application system works, highlight what they can do now to optimise their chances of getting into a place for 2018 and some key dates. These session have been timetabled into their study session so no class time is lost. All details are on compass.

WORKING BEE AND OTHER GROUNDS INFORMATION. Thank you to all staff, parents and students who turned out on a very warm Sunday morning to help out with the working bee. The aim of the morning was to plant out areas that needed shrubbery and grasses and to also further mulch the area down near the Pump Track. This was all achieved thanks to the following people: Rob Miller, Michael Tracy, Wayne Duck, Rob Nigro, Dan Maynard, Andy Brydson, Dave Foehn, Ray Powell, Naomi Ryan, Geoff Pattison, Adam Slater, Liam O’Connor, Keetah Evans, Pat Egan, Yuri Setnick, Cath Lee, Adam Collings, Tiffany Greenhill and a special thanks to our students Blaise Turner, Jamie Duck and Lily Setnik.
The next working bee won’t be until Term 3, however this will hopefully be where we can plant mature trees around the school. The Hockey oval is looking good due to it being irrigated by re-use water. We are hoping to forge a relationship with the Shire and Rosebud Heart Soccer Club where we can get the main oval irrigated – stay tuned!
SPORT NEWS YEAR SEVEN SPORT
Our fresh group of Year 7 student went out to represent the college in Tennis, Cricket, Volleyball, Baseball and Soft-ball. The quality skill level on display as well as a ‘never give up’ attitude hid the fact that the majority of our stu-dents were playing the sports for the first time. The amazing effort resulted in a range of seconds & thirds. A huge well done to everyone who was involved and I look forward to seeing all students back it up in Term 2 for another group of sports.
ATHLETICS DAY
Our whole school Athletics Day is Tuesday the 28th of March at the Truemans Road Oval. In preparation for the event all students were treated to motivating house assemblies ran by both staff and students which saw the welcoming of the Year 7’s to their new houses, as well as the development of new inspiring team chants. We invite all parents to come down on the day to witness the fun and talent of our competing students.
SOUTHERN METROPOLITAN REGION SWIMMING FINAL On Wednesday the 29th of March our gun swimmers who were lucky enough to taste victory at the local region competition will be off again to showcase their silky skills at the Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre. The whole college wishes them the best of luck.
