2 Introduction Air travel has become an important part of our lives, and ensuring the highest level of passenger safety is a key goal for air traffic control (ATC) authorities. Passenger safety depends to a large extent on reliable voice communications between air traffic controllers and pilots. Rohde & Schwarz is a leading supplier of radios for safety-critical communications and has been providing radio systems for ATC communications for over 35 years. The R&S®Series4200 is the latest generation of radios for civil and military ATC communications.
Today’s ATC radios need to satisfy a wide variety of demanding requirements – ranging from a very difficult RF environment where the radio has to perform in high-interference situations to very reliable operation under all possible conditions that can occur at the radio sites. In addition, the radios need to be constantly monitored and controlled from a control center to make sure that radio communications are available at all times and under all conditions. With the advent of controller-pilot data-link communications (CPDLC), the radios must be able to support voice as well as data communications. Last but not least, with the changing telecommunications world, different transmission links need to be supported so that the radios can interconnect with the voice communications system (VCS). The radios can support analog and digital links to the VCS. Digital voice communications to the VCS are either via 2.048 Mbit/s E1 links or via voice over IP in line with EUROCAE standards. The R&S®Series4200 can satisfy all these challenging requirements. This document describes the projects for some of the many customers who rely on Rohde & Schwarz as their supplier for ATC radio systems.

Customer
CS Communication & Systèmes of France, prime contractor of the French air force for renovating the nation-wide communications system under the System Radio Sol Air (SRSA) program
Project description
The R&S®Series4200 radios will be installed in around 40 radio sites throughout France. The radios are transmitters, receivers and transceivers, some in the VHF frequency band but most in the UHF frequency band. The R&S®XD4200 transceiver will be used with an external crypto unit in line with NATO standards. The radios will be connected to the VCS of CS and integrated into the management system of the VCS using the serial interface of the radio.

Altogether around 2400 radios are to be deployed. Products and services provided
Rohde & Schwarz provides the VHF and UHF radios and is responsible for servicing and repairing the equipment, as well as for spare stock handling.

3.2 Societé Internationale de Telecommunication Aeronautique (SITA)

Societé International de Telecommunication Aeronautique (SITA), headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, is modernizing and extending their data communications network for the AIRCOM data-link service.
Project description
SITA operates a worldwide data network to provide data communcations between aircraft and ground terminals from airlines or air navigation service providers (ANSP). In order to offer better services, the existing network is being upgraded from an analog 2.4 kbit/s data link (AM-MSK) to a digital data link with a speed of 31.5 kbit/s (VDL mode 2) depending on the needs of the ANSPs and airline operators. This technology allows the use of controller-pilot data-link communications (CPDLC) service by ATC controllers over the data network

Furthermore, new radio stations are being built in areas that are not yet covered, which allows more airlines to profit from the AIRCOM service. Together with the radio stations, also the ground data network is being enhanced, which will make it possible to run the service over an IP network. The radios support the legacy VDL ground computers (VGCs), which are connected via serial interface, as well as new, remote VGCs, which are connected to the radio via an IP network. The IP network is also used for remote monitoring and control, as well as for remote software update.
Project size
Over 1000 R&S®XU4200 transceivers of the R&S®Series4200 have been ordered so far. Radios are being installed by SITA in over 80 countries, including Brazil, France, Germany, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey and the USA.
Products and services provided
Rohde & Schwarz provides the VHF radios and is responsible for training personnel and repairing the equipment, as well as for software maintenance to adapt to new SITA requirements.

3.3 DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung, Germany
Customer
DFS, the German ANSP headquartered near Frankfurt, has been a key Rohde & Schwarz customer for many years and has already deployed many radios of previous generations. Project description
DFS is renewing the complete nationwide radio network in Germany. This includes replacing all existing radios with the R&S®Series4200 to comply with the EU directive, which requires all radios to be capabale of 8.33 kHz channel spacing. All radios will be able to interface to the VCS via digital transmission link. The radios can be used either with an E1 interface or voice over IP (VoIP), depending on the VCS to be used. On many sites a unique m:n redundancy system based on the R&S®GV4000 from Rohde & Schwarz is deployed, which makes it possible to increase channel availability at a reduced cost over a fully redundant 1:1 system. The new radios will be integrated into DFS’s SNMP-based management system called NLS.

The renewal of the radio network comprises more than 100 radios sites with up to 2900 radios and will run until 2018. Products and services provided
Rohde & Schwarz will deliver the equipment for complete radio sites with VHF and UHF radios, including racks, filters, circulators, multicouplers and all ancillary equipment. The project includes system integration, installation, training, services and repair.

3.4 Cairo International Airport, Egypt
Customer
ORASCOM, which built the new airport tower in Cairo for the National Air Navigation Services Company (NANSC), Egypt’s provider of air navigation services across all airports in the country, commissioned Rohde & Schwarz to deliver the complete radio system. Project description
The project comprised the delivery of a turnkey radio system, consisting of a main system and an emergency backup system. The main system is divided into a primary and a standby part. The high number of radio channels was a special challenge, that was mastered by using a sophisticated filter system. For the controller positions, the R&S®GB208 AF control unit, a small voice communications switch, is used in combination with the R&S®GB4000T, a touch panel PC-based remote control unit. This unit allows the controller to control and monitor the radio as well as change operational parameters as required. The complete system is controlled and monitored using the R&S®RCMS II remote control and monitoring system.
Project size
The project was for a system with 15 frequencies comprising about 75 radios (receivers, transmitters) for the main system and the emergency backup system. Products and services provided
Rohde & Schwarz designed the radios and delivered the complete, fully integrated system with VHF radios, including racks, filters, radios and operator positions. Services include training and maintenance.

3.5 China ATMB
Customer
All seven of China’s air traffic management bureaus (ATMB) currently use R&S®Series4200 radios.
Project description
Rohde & Schwarz is active in China, where it has been providing ATC radios since 1990 and has already carried out over 56 single projects involving the R&S®Series4200 radio system. These projects range from four-channel systems to systems containing several 100 radios. Projects carried out by Rohde & Schwarz include:

Rohde & Schwarz delivers VHF and UHF radios with ancillaries, filters and the R&S®RCMS II remote control and monitoring system. System integration is handled by the Rohde & Schwarz office in China, which also installs the equipment and provides training, services and maintenance.
