The major efforts the Against Child Abuse (ACA) spent, in addition to our regular services, in this quarter have been two folds:

Firstly, actively launching The Body Shop sponsored project on Stop Sex Trafficking of Children and Young People Campaign which this agency partnered with ECPAT (End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes).

ACA has decided to take up this project, because human trafficking is the third largest and fastest growing criminal industry in the world1 (first being drugs trafficking and second being illegal arms and weapons selling) and there were reports claiming that Hong Kong is a transit and destination for human and child trafficking. As a pioneer and advocate, this agency took up the challenge to look into this untouched ground.

Since the project started in this quarter, a strategic plan of action took place, including massive advertising and promotion took place in almost all MTR stations with a 12-sheet big banner being posted, video appealed by celebrities aired on Roadshow and Big TV Screens in prominent sites. There were two free trams and one free bus sponsored by the Hong Kong Tramways and CityBus to promote this particular campaign and solicit endorsements. According to The Body Shop statistics at this point there have been around 100,000 endorsements obtained. But we need you to sign and endorse the appeal for all-rounded improvement and to prevent children from Sex Trafficking. The kick off event, with the venue sponsored by Harbour City took place on 6 August 2010, well generated media and public interest as Ms Virginia Lok, Ms Bernice Liu of TVB and Ms Nicola Cheung came to show support. Mr Mark Capaldi, Deputy Director of ECPAT, Ms Annie Chan, General Manager of the The Body Shop and Dr Patrick Cheung, Chairperson of ACA made important appeals on the day. The group of 90 volunteers joined a Bus Parade to distribute leaflets and solicit endorsement from the public.

The campaign will continue and you must join a Sharing Forum on Preventing Children from Sex Trap which is coming up on 1 December 2010 (World Aids Day). Professor Ian Grenville Cross, Senator of International Association of Prosecutors (Former Director of Public Prosecutions) and several important speakers will be there. (Please browse the following link for the details of the sharing forum www.aca.org.hk/menu/cf_menu.html?5)

Secondly, the team funded by The Community Chest of Hong Kong actively implemented the Daylily Project and Bless My Home Forever Volunteer Home Visitation Project, in Kwun Tong and Sham Shui Po.

For the Daylily project we collaborated with the United Christian Hospital to support single and/or young mothers. For the Bless My Home Forever Project in a district with large groups of economically deprived families who may need more support and guidance in terms of child care and supervision.

Both projects acquired the mentoring and home visitation approach. Training of volunteers, matching them with targeted families for home visitation and support services took place in this quarter. These two projects funded by the Community Chest have been well promoted and we recruited 65 volunteers for the Daylily Project and 30 volunteers for Bless My Home Forever Project. Recruitment and training as well as home visitation will continue through the year.

While we report on the efforts for this quarter, our Flag Day 2 October 2010 in New Territories had been accomplished with keen support by almost 4,000 volunteers and many came with their children. Our most sincere gratitude to everyone involved, those selling flags and those buying them. Your generosity in cash and in kind have been extremely helpful in support this agency to gradually expand our service for the needy.

We will be celebrating our 31st year of service since our establishment in 1979 as a pilot project and 30th year of service since we registered as an on going body in 1980 on 19 November 2010, the World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse. Come to join our celebration for children of Hong Kong and children of the World.

Human trafficking is the third-largest and fastest - growing

criminal industry in the world. The illegal trade of human beings

sees at least 1.8 million children and young people trafficked for

sexual and labour exploitation. Against Child Abuse (ACA), together

with the End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of

Children for Sexual Purposes (ECPAT), with the sponsorship of The

Body Shop, launched a local "Stop Sex Trafficking of Children

and Young People" campaign. The campaign aims to raise

public awareness for victims or those at risk from

sex trafficking.

A press conference was held on 6 August 2010 at Harbour City, Tsim Sha Shui as a Kick-off ceremony.

Guests including Ms Virginia Lok, Ms Bernice Liu and Ms Nicola Young Cheung were invited and

act as Against Child Abuse Ambassadors for Children. After the press conference, organising staff,

together with around a hundred of volunteers, took a sponsored Citybus for the bus parade travelling

from Tsim Sha Tsui to Causeway Bay via Eastern Harbour Tunnel. More than a thousand petition forms

were collected on that day from the public, supporting this campaign. For press release of the event,

please go to: www.aca.org.hk/press_news/20100806-SST-chi.pdf

Till October 2010, nearly 100,000 supporting signatures were collected, although it is still far away

from the target. Please go to our website www.aca.org.hk and sign our petition to support Stop Sex

Trafficking of Children and Young People Campaign. The signatures collected will be passed to United

Nations and relevant Departments. Your participation and support really can make a difference!

With funding support of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant, ACA has launched a 3-year project

in Tuen Mun, Yuen Long and Tin Shui Wai districts since April 2008. The project aims to support targeted families

during pre- and post-natal period through home-visitation conducted by our trained volunteers. It also promotes a

caring and non-violent environment for the prevention of child abuse and neglect at the early stage and for ensuring

our children with the optimal growth.

Family Activity in Hong Kong Wetland Park On 25 July 2010, an activity for parents and children was conducted at the Hong Kong Wetland Park. Since the

park comprised of indoor and outdoor activities, it provided an opportunity for participants to experience the

versatile bio-diversity of wetlands. More than 55 parents, children and volunteers participated in the activity,

in which supportive network was built.

Volunteers Sharing Session and BBQ Same as last year, project volunteers joined together for sharing their home visitation

experiences on 18 September 2010. The theme for this sharing session was "Difficulties

and Challenge: how to mobilize community resources for our targeted families?".

Beginning with the new and old volunteer introduction, we have

separated into 3 groups to share and discuss the needs of

home visitation. 53 volunteers in total participated

in the activity.

Sponsored by the Community Investment

and Inclusion Fund (CIIF)

With funding support from the Community Investment and

Inclusion Fund, Labour and Welfare Bureau in December

2008, we have launched the second phrase of "Safe and

Child Friendly Community Project in Wong Tai Sin" for 3 years.

This project aims

(1) to help build up a safe and child friendly community;

(2) to empower families to be willing to act and

interact with the neighbourhood;

(3) to help identify and support family with

unattended children; and

(4) to actualize zero tolerance of violence at

home as well as in the community.

Neighbourhood networkThe core group conducted monthly meetings to discuss

the strategy for prevention of child left unattended and

promotion of good neighbourhood. This group would

design a yearly planner which includes community

resources and messages on child safety and good

neighbourhood. The planner would be distributed

in Wong Tai Sin District. The group also actively

participated in various events in the Wong Tai Sin

District, including "I love my Home in Wong Tai Sin"

organised by the Wong Tai Sin Residents Association,

the Mid-Autumn Festival Night organised by the Chuk

Yuen North Estate Owners' Corporation and Carnival of

"Children's Rights and Family Bonding Project"

organised by ACA. The handmade heart-

shaped scent bags designed by the

core group members were attractive

to the residents. Messages of good

neighbourhood and child safety were

distributed together with the handmade

heart-shaped scent bags.

120 families registered as target families.

The families continued to meet through various

programmes: morning tea parenting group, outdoor

book and game corner and family activities. In the

review period, we had conducted a visit to the Hong

Kong Railway Museum, a birthday party and a trip to

Produce Green Foundation. A total number of 135

attendance was recorded. The programmes helped

strengthen the neighbourhood network and encourage

positive parent-child relationship.

School networkWe were busy to assist the after-school care activities at

Baptist Rainbow Primary School : conduction of the tuition

classes and Summer Blanket Fun. A total number of 44

volunteers were motivated. There were 62 pupils joining

both programmes. For the Summer Blanket Fun, the family

members were also involved to sew the blankets.

Meeting with PTA and school staff of Baptist Rainbow

Primary School was held on 10 September 2010 to plan

for strategies and programmes in the coming school

year. It was proposed to conduct parent-child workshops,

parenting talks and outdoor trip to strengthen the

network and parent-child relationship.

The collaborat ion with St Bonaventure

Catholic Primary School and their PTA started

in October 2010. Two courses, the "Story

Telling MaMa Sessions" and Positive Parenting

Course aimed at training the parents for after school

activities and promotion of positive parenting and child

safety message.

New Arrival Families Network Group The New Arrival Families Network Group refreshed after

the short rest in summer as most members returned to

Mainland for holidays. This group would continue to

meet once a month for support and sharing to new arrival

families.

Need Continuous SupportWe are now recruiting families in need, volunteers and inviting corporate to join the project. For enquiry and

With funding support of Health Care and Promotion

Fund and collaboration with Caritas Medical Centre,

the "Joy at Home" Home Visitation Project has run for

nearly 2 years. The project aims to motivate families

with children to improve their health care physically,

emotionally and socially. It also targets to provide early

intervention through volunteer's home visitation, allying

community resources, and social support network in the

neighbourhood. Since the project comes to conclusion,

a sharing session was held on 25 September 2010 at

the YMCA Cheung Sha Wan Centre. The theme of this

sharing session was providing sharing platform for the

project collaborator, project families and volunteers to

share their experiences and

feelings about the project

in the past 2 years.

"Bless my Home Forever" volunteer home visitation project has been launched since April 2010. So far, 11 families have

been recruited through receiving referrals from primary schools and integrated family service centres in Sham Shui Po.

A pool of 30 trained volunteers has been developed. Some of the volunteers were successfully matched to the families

to conduct home visitation and escort to the social activities including visiting the Wetland Park and community carnival

so as to enhance their exposure.

In order to arouse public awareness of child

safety in Sham Shui Po, our trained volunteers

distributed safety tips to the residents during the

Bus Tour held on 23 September 2010.

In the next few months, recruitment of volunteers

and target families will be continued. Besides,

to enhance those families' network, sharing

sessions among them would be planned via

collaborating with schools in Sham Shui Po.

There were 77 guests, service users and volunteers joined

the session, all children were placed to a play session, so

that parents could concentrate on the sharing. The session

began with a warm welcoming speech from our Director,

Mrs Priscilla Lui followed by a presentation on needs of

Sham Shui Po families from Dr Yu Chak Man, Consultant

of the Pediatric Department of the Caritas Medical Centre.

A brief introduction about the project and the outcome of

the two-year works were shared by our Assistant Director,

Dr Jessica Ho. At the end of the session, three families

and their volunteers shared their experience, changes and

feelings on the service. It was a cherishing time and their

sharing was heartwarming and touching.

Daylily Project is a new service project of Against Child Abuse Ltd. It targeted

for single or young mothers who need support and child care knowledge.

Child care and positive child management skills were shared during

the volunteer mentors' regular visit to the single or young mothers

so as to empower them to provide positive environment for the

development of their children.

The Project has recruited 65 volunteers and they are matching

with families. Three trainings were conducted for volunteers

including

1. A game booth was held at a Carnival on 21 August 2010

2. Visited to Wetland on 5 September 2010

3. A bus tour was organised on 23 September 2010 to distribute child safety

tips so as to promote the service in the areas of Kwun Tong, Tsui Ping
