    Chapter 1

    THE PROBLEM

    Introduction

The number of social networks increases rapidly. The users, mainly teenagers, are easily

addicted to social networks. They think of social networks as virtual worlds where they can do

whatever they can and see whoever they want. They do not realize the effects it would have upon

them. Some become very addicted that they never leave their computers or will become restless

all the time. Since the number of social networks doubled since 2007, more and more teenagers

become users of these social networking sites, i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Multiply, etc.

    Background

This topic was chosen because to be investigated for various reasons. While there are

thousands of users and social networking sites, many become addicted to them. As they become

addicted to social networking, they feel less enthusiasm on doing outdoor activities.

Adolescence is a time when ordinary levels of stress are heightened by physical,

psychological, emotional, and social changes. Because of stress, they have a need of social

closeness. They want to have more people and friends that they could keep in touch with. They

use social networks because of this reason, they want to have friends that are far from them and

try to feel what they feel. Social networking is a refuge from them where they can be away from

    the outside world.

    Setting

The authors started working on this research project at school. Then they moved on to

their houses were they searched the internet for information and facts about the research, namely

    Social Networking.

    Statement of the Problem

The reasons why teenagers use social networks in America in a addicted fashion.

social network, how social networks take up most of the time: to show students, teenagers and

the society that social networking is not the only way to meet new people.

Specifically, the study sought answers to the following questions:

What is Social Networking? A social network is a social structure made up of individuals (or

organizations) called "nodes", which are tied (connected) by one or more specific types

ofinterdependency, such as friendship, kinship, common interest, financial exchange,

dislike, sexual relationships, or relationships of beliefs, knowledge or prestige.

Social network analysis views social relationships in terms of network theory consisting

ofnodes and ties. Nodes are the individual actors within the networks, and ties are the

relationships between the actors. The resulting graph-based structures are often very complex.

There can be many kinds of ties between the nodes. Research in a number of academic fields has

shown that social networks operate on many levels, from families up to the level of nations, and

play a critical role in determining the way problems are solved, organizations are run, and the

degree to which individuals succeed in achieving their goals.

Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow computer

science students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. The website's

membership was initially limited by the founders to Harvard students, but was expanded to other

colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. It gradually added support

for students at various other universities before opening to high school students, and, finally, to

    anyone aged 13 and over.

Facebook has met with some controversy. It has been blocked intermittently in several countries

including Pakistan, Syria, the People's Republic of China, Vietnam, Iran, Uzbekistan and North

Korea. It has also been banned at many places of work to discourage employees from wasting

time using the service. Facebook's privacy has also been an issue, and the safety of their users

has been compromised several times. Facebook settled a lawsuit regarding claims over source

code and intellectual property. In the movie the social network it shows how Facebook was

created. Facebook was mixed with Friendster and MySpace. It was supposed to be named for

Harvard but it was first called The Facebook but Marks team disagree so they called it

Facebook. It all started at Harvard then it spread at California then went to London then scattered

around the world. Facebook became rich because of the advertisements that are being shown at

side of the Facebook page whenever you join a club they become rich because the owners of the

advertisement pay half a million bucks to the owner of the Facebook and signed by the CFO of

Facebook. The advertisements used are banners, marketing, and games. It was founded in

Cambridge Massachusetts at Harvard University and it was launched on February 4,

2004. Facebook has over 1700+ employees and has over 800 million US Dollars.

MySpace, Tom Anderson the creator of MySpace, the online social hub that's been fighting to

stay relevant in the age of Facebook and Twitter, is overhauling its image and its website into an

entertainment destination for its mostly younger audience.

The social-networking pioneer, which was among the top Internet sites just a few years ago, now

it has its sights set decidedly lower. Starting Wednesday and over the next month, MySpace will

be re launching its site to focus on giving users more ways to consume music, videos and

    celebrity gossip.

Entertainment has long been central to the MySpace experience, but over the years the site was

also pulled in different directions as it dabbled in classifieds, job ads and even user reviews in a

partnership with Citysearch as it pushed to become a social portal for the Web. It didn't work out,

and Facebook is now emerging as that portal. It was founded in Santa Monica, California and it

was launched on August 2003. MySpace has over 1000 employees and has 385 million US

    Dollars.

What are the most used Social Networking Sites in the United States of America? Nowadays

Social Networking is the most popular and easiest way to communicate with people they may or

    may not know.

The first on the top three lists on Social Networking is Facebook, created by a Harvard student,

Mark Zuckerberg. It has over five hundred million active users around the world. Facebook is

way different from the other Social Networking sites, because with just a click, you can meet

almost fifty percent of our population in this world. Aside from that, you can play games like

Mafia Wars, Pet Society, Crime City, Keyboard Smash and the most popular game on Facebook,

    Farmville, and many more.

Second is Myspace, created by eUniverse. It has over two hundred million active users around

the world. Myspace is a blog site, you can share your blurbs like about me and who Id like to

meet section. Below the users Myspace page is the comments section, wherein the users

friends may leave comments for all viewers to read.

The last one is LinkedIn, a business-oriented social networking site. It is mainly used for

professional networking. It has more than seventy five million registered users, spanning more

than 200 countries and territories around the world. The purpose of this site is to allow registered

users to maintain a list of contact details of people they know and trust in business. The people in

    the list are called connections.
