ThelastthingIrememberisavaguesensationofhittingmyheadsomewherehard.Thinkingback,IrealizethatitwasprobablytheroadoutsidetheJealousNarwhal.Theownerofthatbarmusthavetossedmeout.NextthingIknow,I'mbeingcarriedupsidedownbysomeoneinaweirdsuitofarmour.Igruntedandwasrewardedwithasharpblowtothehead,knockingmeoutcoldagain.WhenIwokeupagain,Iwasinthiscell.I'dneverbeenimprisonedbefore,butIhadseencli

psonthenewsthathaddepictedpeoplebeingimprisoned,andIhavetosayitwasnothinglikewhatmostpeopleprobablythoughtitwas.

Itwasdeathlysilentexceptforthelowhumofthelaserskeepingmeinthecell.Theselasersalsoprovidedtheonlylightsource;thedullgreenish-yellowilluminatedthesurroundingsofthecellformaybeameter,althoughmydepthperceptionisn'tverygoodwhenIhaveapoundingheadache.Itwasimpossibletotellwhethertheheadachewasfromthealcohol,thearmouredguyhittingmyhead,ormehittingmyownheadontheroad.

Everthelevelheaded,clearthinker,Iclosedmyeyesandtriedtorememberwhathadhappened.

IrememberedgoingintotheJealousNarwhal;thesamebarthatIalwayswenttoonFridaynight,startingupaconversationwithaguywhosenameIneverlearnedbutwhoalwaysseemedtobetherewhenIwasthere.HehadmentionedsomethingaboutSlaveTraderscomingtotheseparts.Ihaddismisseditasidlegossipthen,but...couldIbeinoneoftheSlaveTraders'prisoncamps?

<b>Draese</b>ThefifthplanetfromAlkaid,Draesehasthemostmildclimateofthethreeinhabitableworlds.Almosttheentireplanetisagiganticcity,withhighlyadvancedtechnology.Thereisvirtuallynothingorganicornaturalontheplanet.Grassandtreesareextremelyrare,andtherearefewareasbetweenpartsofacitywithbareground.Itsdayis26.3hourslong,anditsyearis397.8days.Thereisonemoon,calledCanta,anditisuninhabitable.Theplanetisabout1/4water,andabouthalfofthewaterisdrinkable.

Anunfortunatesideeffectofthenuclearpowerplantsismutationsintheworkers.Somehavehideousdeformities:misshapenheadsorappendages,skinthatlookstobefallingoffinsheets,andmanyothers.Sometimesthesedeformitiesgrantabilitiestothemutants,suchasincreasedbonedensity,extrathickskin,oreyeslikeacat.Eitherway,nearlyallmutantsarefearedandshunned.Atnight,mostmutantswillcomeoutofhidingtofindfood,preyingonanyonefoolishenoughtobeoutatthetime.Thereisnotmuchdiscriminationotherthanagainstmutants,andthereisnotmuchconflictotherwise.However,itseemsasthoughanothertemperaturefluctuationisontheway.
