IN ISSUE 886 of the Chap-ter, we reported on local schools taking part in the Durham Primary Maths Challenge.

We provided a sample question from one round, where the pupils were allowed three minutes to answer and invited read-ers to work out the answer for themselves.

The question was: “If you write down the num-

bers from 1 to 1000 inclu-sive in numerical order how many times will you write down the digit 1?”

Having provided our readers an additional week to work out the problem, we can reveal that the answer to the question is that the num-ber one appears 301 times.

Congratulations to all who solved the problem!.

AND THE ANSWER IS...

ST LUKE’S Church and the Ladder Centre will be working in partnership during the school hol-idays to provide a free Holiday Club, following a successful application for grant funding.

The Club will be held in St Luke’s Church Centre every Friday of the school holidays and will provide a free hot meal and lots of fun activities.

The strictly limited places are open to pri-mary school age children and due to the popularity of previous Holiday Clubs booking is essential. Con-tact Vicar Gary on 01740 655232.

The group also waved to the residents in Chil-ton Care Home, who were watching through the win-dows.

POLICE ARE appealing for witnesses after a car collided with a tree.

The collision happened in the early hours of Satur-day morning, 7th July, on Station Road, West Corn-forth, when a blue Citroen Saxo left the road and col-lided with a tree, causing extensive damage to the car and injuring a number of the occupants.

The driver of the vehicle, a 24-year-old man, failed a roadside breath test and drug wipe. He was taken to University Hospital of North Durham (UHND) where he was treated for his injuries.

A 19-year-old woman who suffered lower back injuries was taken to UHND before being trans-ferred to James Cook Uni-versity Hospital, in Mid-dlesbrough.

WITNESSES SOUGHT AFTER SEVERAL INJURED IN CRASH

Two other passengers, a 23-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, were also taken to UHND with minor injuries and were later released.

A two-year-old boy was also taken to UHND, but was not believed to be injured.

The car was travelling from West Cornforth towards Metal Bridge when the collision took place shortly after 12.05am. It happened approximately 100m east of the disused railway line.

The road was closed for two hours to allow collision investigators to work at the scene and for recovery of the vehicle.

Anyone with any infor-mation should call police on 101, quoting incident number 6 of July 7th.

This year's gala takes place on Saturday 28th July at Charlie Wayman Playing Fields from 11am – 3.30pm (note change of venue).

I had to refrain from attending the Flag Raising Event where I was to give a speech for those of our Serving Military Men and Women, this was due to the threats of disruption to that and any event I would have been involved in as Town Mayor. It has got so bad I now have involved the Police.

“To be denied the oppor-tunity to hold personal views was never my expectation when I under-took the role of Town Mayor, and it is a matter of sincere regret to me that those personal views have been so tragically and outrageously twisted and reported on in order to discredit both myself and my faith. I am step-ping aside with immedi-ate effect, and trust all local organisations who have been so cruelly influ-enced by recent publicity are able to once again support all charitable and worthy events organised by the Council in Ferryhill.

“It is my intention to remain as a member of the council, to participate in and promote initiatives brought forward for the

benefit of all in our town, as was always my inten-tion.

“May I thank the many people who have expressed support for me, especially the 5,540 people who signed my petition and the 56% who voted me to stay as Mayor from the Northern Echo pole. I trust that my resig-nation now puts an end to the vendetta being waged against me, my family, Church, and colleagues.

“My Faith in Christ is what drives me to help people regardless of their faith, colour, culture, sex-uality, or political persua-sion. I have never let the convictions of my Faith dictate who receives my help or the help from the Church it has always been the Love of God that is found in Christ Jesus, a love that is full of Mercy and Grace. People who really know me and Lau-raine and the Church can truly comment on how hard we have lovingly worked to help and pro-vide for those in need, this has now been decimated by the minority mob along with those wishing to score political points and who have a God-phobia.

“I will close with these words from the Apostle Peter from the Book of

Acts Chapter 5: 25 And someone came and told them, “Look! The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people.” 26 Then the captain with the officers went and brought them, but not by force, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people. 27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the coun-cil. And the high priest questioned them, 28 say-ing, “We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood upon us." 29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. 30 The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hang-ing him on a tree. 31 God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Sav-iour, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 32 And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him. 33 When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them.

“I guess nothing much has changed. I get called a bigot and intolerant?"

THE FERRYHILL Sen-ior Citizens' Annual Trip will take place on Thurs-day 26th July to South Shields.

Coaches will meet in Ferryhill Market Place from 9.30am and will leave for South Shields at 10am.

"Seats don’t need to be booked prior to the trip so if you would like to enjoy a day out at South Shields, please be in Ferryhill Mar-

ket place before 10am to avoid disappointment," said a spokesperson for the Town Council.

The cost for this year's trip is £3 for Senior Citi-zens, £5 for adults and £2 for children under 14.

Coaches will leave South Shields for the return journey to Ferryhill at 5pm and will drop off at various points on the main bus route around town.

SENIOR CITIZENS' TRIP

the majority of people behaved responsibly, but the combination of good weather, alcohol and a fantastic result for Eng-land resulted in a huge increase in calls to us."

Speaking as we went to print on Tuesday evening he continued: “Like the rest of the country, we are delighted with the result and are looking forward to Wednesday’s match as much as everyone else. We will have extra patrols on duty on Wednesday night to keep everyone safe.

“However, we’d urge you all to enjoy the match safely and responsibly. It’s the first time England have reached a World Cup semi-final in 28 years – do you really want to miss the match by ending up in a police cell?”

Police are also urging people to think twice about whether they need

to call 999 or 101, or whether the incident can be dealt with via the Click Before You Call service on the website.

Supt Williamson added: “A number of calls we received on Saturday could have been easily addressed through other channels, rather than by calling 999 or 101.

“Please help our officers to respond to those that urgently need our help, and only call if there is a genuine need for a police response.”

Police, Crime and Vic-tim’s Commissioner, Ron Hogg, said: “It’s great that so many people are able to support a successful England football team this summer, and I wish them all the best in the semi-final.

“I would encourage everyone to enjoy the rest of the World Cup safely and sensibly.”

AS THE World Cup nears its end, police are urging fans to enjoy the remain-ing games safely and responsibly.

Durham Constabulary experienced its busiest day of the year on Sat-urday, as England won a place in the World Cup semi-finals after beating Sweden 2-0.

Throughout the day, the force dealt with 1,418 calls - 390 of which were calls to 999, and 1,028 calls to 101.

Every cell in County Dur-ham and Darlington was full, mostly with people affected by alcohol.

Superintendent Colin Williamson said: “Satur-day was by far our busiest day of the year – it was even busier than the New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, which are usually our most demanding days.

“Thankfully there were no major incidents and

Councillors must pull togetherThe political upheaval concerning Ferryhill Town Council is fuelling rumours that will destroy the same council. No matter what their political persuasion, our councillors must pull together for the sake of the people of Ferryhill, or all is lost.Whatever the political outcome I sincerely hope that there will be no jobs lost and the lads looking after the parks, cemetery etc continue to do their jobs efficiently.

something called ball hockey and told me to give it a go.

“This was back in November 2015 and I have been playing since.”

She plays for the North East Dekstars, who play out of Gateshead and compete in the Northern Conference.

A spokesperson for Ball Hockey UK said: “The game had grown mas-sively in the last ten years, thanks to clubs like the Dekstars and the miracle that is social media.

“There are national championships for men, ladies and juniors with several UK players, male and female, from the North East.”

“The trials for Great Brit-ain took place last year at Skate Central Arena in Sheffield,” adds Alex.

“Coaches used set drills to watch us and see how we perform, what our

skills were and how we would be useful if we were on the team.

“I found out I was on the World Championships team in November.

“I scored our only goal in the tournament and we were ecstatic because we weren’t even expecting a goal.

“Going up against the hockey capitals of the world and not getting beat by too much made us feel like we were the winners of the tournament.

“We also won the fair play award as we’d been supporting all of the other countries as well as our own.

"I have made friends for life and had such an amaz-ing experience which I will never forget. Trials for the senior team are in August and you bet I will be there. Hockey isn’t just a sport it’s a culture and it changes peoples lives."

FERRYHILL BALL Hockey player, Alexandrea West (Alex) starred for the GB Women’s U20 side at the recent World Ball Hockey Championships, held in Nitra, Slovakia last month.

The 19 year-old scored the side’s only goal in the championships, in a fledg-ling sport in the UK which has grown rapidly over the past decade

Ball hockey - also known as street hockey - is simi-lar to its ice counterpart, but without the ice.

Players wear similar pads and helmets but trainers instead of skates and the game does not include checking - the defen-sive move in which body checks are used to block an opponent and which often leads to physical confrontations on the ice.

“My whole family is from an ice hockey back-ground,” explains Alex, “but my brother tried

AFTER 16 months of fundraising, Seconds Out Boxing Academy, based at Ferryhill Sport and Education Centre, has successfully purchased a minibus.

Academy founder, Paul Eddy said: “The vision behind the purchase was all about the memories we could create for the kids who train very hard every week.

“I would like to offer my thanks to all club mem-bers for their continued efforts and would like to say to the parents that your efforts have been unreal and you all should be very proud of what you have done.

“A big thank you also to Frank Bruno, Esham Pick-ering and Tommy Ward for their public training sessions and to the spon-sors of the bus appeal who made it possible.

BOXING CLUB TAKES DELIVERY OF MINIBUS

Seconds Out Boxing Academy took delivery of the minibus which will be used to transport boxers to tournaments.

“Special thanks to Durham Lions for their racenight and huge, huge thanks to Lisa Rutherford.

“Lisa lost her daughter to a suicide bomb at Man-chester Arena last year and due to her loss set up the “Forever Together” trust for Chloe and Liam to support young people in the North East.

“Finally I want to thank, from the bottom of my heart, Dave Westgarth, Micheal Charlton, Micky Hall, Regan Eddy and Thom Marley for what can only be described as an unbreakable bond.

“I would never forget the support I get from the rock that keeps it all together, my wife Nicola Eddy, who puts up with me no matter what and deserves a medal the size of Yorkshire.”

The minibus appeal is now closed.
