CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME

Welcome to the Royal Wootton Bassett Arts Festival. 2020 will be another momentous year for RWBAF. Our new combined Festival will see Music and Classical Guitar sharing the same weekend at last, we are moving to a new amazing venue and we will be launching a new Dance Section too! All Music will now take place over one weekend. For many years most of Music took place in the summer with Classical Guitar in the autumn. But from 2020 onwards all of our music classes will be on the same musical weekend. This year RWBAF will move venues to The Deanery in Wichelstowe, just 5 miles and a 10 minute drive from Royal Wootton Bassett. We have enjoyed many years at the Royal Wootton Bassett Academy but, in order to secure our venue for the future we have decided to make this move. If you would like to find out more about this wonderful venue follow this link: The Deanery CE Academy.

Following the successful launch of the Musical Theatre classes in

2019 we are now launching a new Dance Section in 2020.

There are new classes in Ballet, Song and Dance, Tap, Modern, Character and much more; plus, you can enter a solo, duo,

trio/quartet or group.

So, whether you are new to the Festival or have been coming back year after year we are looking forward to welcoming you to the Festival in November and hope you enjoy sharing your performances with us and trying out the new Dance classes. The SYLLABUS will be available to download shortly at www.RWBArtsFestival.com. I look forward to meeting you at the Festival,

CHILD PROTECTION AND SAFEGUARDING POLICY The British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech work for amateur festivals everywhere to help create thousands of educational performance opportunities for children and young people each year.

The Federation, and our member Festivals, are committed to ensuring safe environments for children and young people and believe that it is always unacceptable for a child or young person to experience abuse of any kind. We recognise our responsibility to safeguard the welfare of all children and young people, by a commitment to recommend best practice which protects them.

This policy applies to our Board of Trustees, paid staff, Adjudicator members, volunteers, students or anyone working on behalf of the Federation and our member Festivals.

We recognise that:

• the welfare of the child/young person is paramount • all children, regardless of age, disability, gender, racial heritage, religious belief, sexual

orientation or identity, have the right to equal protection from all types of harm or abuse • working in partnership with children, young people, their parents, carers and other

agencies is essential in promoting young people’s welfare.

The purpose of the policy:

• to provide protection for the children and young people who participate in our festivals, including the children of festival members

• to provide staff and volunteers with guidance on procedures they should adopt in the event that they suspect a child or young person may be experiencing, or be at risk of, harm

We will seek to safeguard children and young people by:

• valuing them, listening to and respecting them • adopting child protection guidelines through procedures and safe working practice for

staff and volunteers • recruiting staff and volunteers safely, ensuring all necessary checks are made • sharing information about child protection and safe working practice with children,

parents, staff and volunteers • sharing information about concerns with agencies who need to know, and involving

parents and children appropriately • providing effective management for staff and volunteers through supervision, support

and training.

The Federation will review this policy each year in November in line with Safe Network guidance or sooner in light of any changes in legislation or guidance. All changes will be communicated to our member Festivals in time for the start of the new Festival year.

CREATING SAFER FESTIVALS FOR EVERYONE The Federation and its member Festivals use the following policies and procedures to provide Safer Festivals for everyone: 1. A single, definitive Child Protection Policy adopted by all Federation Festivals. 2. One or more designated Festival Safeguarding Officers (FSO) appointed for each Federation Festival.

Name: Lisa Williams Telephone: -01793 854071 / 07989 834120

3. Best practice advice in the form of Safe Working Practice and Festival Child Protection leaflets, with support and training for all Festival staff and volunteers. Including clear reporting procedures for anyone with a concern about a child.

4. Appropriate recruitment and induction procedures for all new staff and volunteers responsible for

providing safe environments for everyone attending / performing at a Federation Festival. 5. All Festival personnel wear a badge to identify their roles. All teachers/parents/guardians/carers are

asked to report all incidents of any nature to anyone wearing a Festival badge. All reported incidents will be handled in accordance with the Safe Working Practice and Festival Child Protection best practice advice. In addition, we will ensure the availability of a quiet area / room where concerns can be expressed in private.

6. For the duration of a Festival all teachers/parents/guardians/carers are responsible for the continuous

care and supervision of their own children/pupils. If they are unable to attend personally, they must delegate their responsibilities to an identified adult and ensure that their children/pupils are aware of the identity and name of the person responsible for their care. This includes supervision throughout all Festival venues, practice and changing areas that may be provided. The Festival cannot take any responsibility for property left unattended

7. No unauthorised photography, audio or video recording of children and young people is allowed at our

Festivals. Where parents/guardians/carers do not wish photos to be taken at all, then the responsible adult attending should ensure that their child is not included in official photos.

8. Some children and vulnerable adults may have specific needs in order to take part. If this is the case, we

ask the responsible teachers/parents/guardians/carers to contact the Festival Organisers prior to arrival. The Festival actively seeks wherever to meet these needs but must know beforehand in order to prepare support – or to advise that help cannot be provided on this occasion.

9. The Festival’s Child Protection Policy and approach to Creating Safer Festivals for Everyone is published

explicitly in our Syllabus, Programme and Website. By completing and signing the entry form all parents / guardians / carers and teachers of entrants under 18 (or vulnerable adults of any age) confirm that they give (or have obtained) the necessary consents for the entrants to take part in the Festival. Without consent the entry to the Festival cannot be accepted.

SPEECH & DRAMA & MUSICAL THEATRE CHAIR’S WELCOME

A very warm welcome to you all. 2020 is proving to be a most exciting year. The Festival continues to expand! Following the beginning of our Musical Theatre Classes straddling Speech & Drama and Music, we have had some exciting responses from teachers, so I am sure we will be seeing a popular increase in 2020!

We were delighted to have a well-known, real, live POET with us in 2019! Coral Rumble, a notable children’s poet, joined us to celebrate our Tenth Anniversary. It was an exciting day, running workshops, and judging our Poetry Competition. A new publication for young readers coincided with her visit, and there were many book-signings. We were honoured to have her at our Festival, and in celebration Coral has permitted us to use one of her poems for Verse Speaking Class SD1 this year: Feeding the Ducks with Grandad. I am sure this will be a popular and exciting start for our youngest performers, and one they will not forget.

We have a wide range of classes to suit all ages. Please dip in! As our Sight Reading Classes have been popular, we have added a new class this year - Sight Reading for Year 10 and over – OPEN which we hope will gain some notable interest.

Adjudicators with us for the first time this year are Paul Bench, who has worked all over the world adjudicating and examining for LAMDA and Vivienne Redford. Vivienne is also an accomplished examiner of many years and adjudicator who has travelled extensively throughout the UK, Ireland and the Channel Islands, and both are very excited to be with us. Rebecca Thompson and Jenny Thornton are delighted to be returning. Jenny is also a well-known writer and has had several of her play-scripts printed in the LAMDA Acting Anthologies. Rebecca is a voice and presentation skills coach, and apart from teaching, she is also actively involved in theatre in the South West. Do look at their glowing profiles. We are extremely fortunate to have such dedicated and hugely qualified adjudicators sharing in our Festival this year.

Festivals are the shaping of so many young people, not only to share and exhibit their talents, but also to help them grow and gain self-esteem. We hope our Festival will nurture and encourage all to develop their skills and will lead them eventually to a confident future.

At a time when many Festivals are struggling, we consider ourselves fortunate to have such a stimulating and lively Festival. It is expanding in many ways, and not only in Speech and Drama. These are exciting times, giving opportunities to children and adults to perform and receive valuable feedback. We are totally indebted to our wonderful volunteers who come to assist, without whom we could not operate, and our small Committee is truly grateful.

RWBAF aims to promote all “Arts” being taught and performed in Royal Wootton Bassett and surrounding areas. There is something for everyone to demonstrate their skills. We hope you will all enjoy engaging with the spirit of the Festival and will leave enriched by your experience.

I look forward to meeting you at the Festival,

Sandra McDowell Mrs. Sandra McDowell Drama Chair, Royal Wootton Bassett Arts Festival

Vivienne has produced and directed a diverse range of musical and theatrical productions, (including, Moondial, Peter Pan, Antigone, The Dreaming’ by Howard Goodall, Blitz! by Lionel Bart, Hairspray, Skellig and The Chrysalids) and particularly enjoys writing and devising original and creative theatre with her senior students. For the past eighteen years, she has organised and directed a widely acclaimed summer school for students aged 7 to 21, which culminates in a commissioned play written for, and performed by the students who attend. Vivienne is an examiner for the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, a member of the Society of Teachers of Speech and Drama and an Adjudicator member of the British and International Federation of Festivals travelling extensively throughout the UK, Ireland and the Channel Islands. She is a former secretary and now a Vice-President of the Bedfordshire Festival of Music, Speech and Drama which has given her a clear understanding and insight into the work, energy and commitment that Festival organisers, teachers and pupils put into making their Festivals a success. When not working (which is a rare occurrence) Vivienne

MUSIC CHAIR’S WELCOME

2020 is the first year that the whole Royal Wootton Bassett Arts Festival Music Family will be together at the same time. Classical Guitar will join all the other musical disciplines for a wonderful weekend of musical performances on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd November. This year we are introducing new Ukulele and Acoustic Guitar classes for Beginners, Intermediates and Advanced performers as well as Ensemble classes for Ukulele, Acoustic Guitar and Mandolin. 2020 will be the 250th Anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven. RWBAF would like to honour this occasion by introducing a NEW Major Award which will be called the BEETHOVEN ANNIVERSARY AWARD. This will be open to all performers in the Music section that enter 4 separate classes. These classes could be all within one discipline such as Piano or Singing or a combination of different disciplines. All four marks will be added together and the person with the highest mark will be presented with the award. Meanwhile in the vocal classes, remember our Own Choice classes gives you the freedom to share your Songs from Shows and Films, Art Song, Operetta, Songs in a Foreign Language, Opera or whatever takes your fancy. This year sees the introduction of new Mixed Instrument Duet classes. Come together with a friend or relative to combine your musical talents in classes MID1, MID2 and MID3. Across the Festival you will find our ‘Novice’ classes designed to offer those new to performing the opportunity to enjoy the Festival experience in a relaxed atmosphere. At the other end of the scale we are also introducing a ‘Professional’ class aimed particularly at music teachers. As a teacher why not challenge yourself and gain valuable feedback from our seasoned adjudicator – we feel this would be a wonderful class to share with our fellow professionals. Whatever your level of experience, RWBAF has a class which will suit you and I look forward to meeting you there,

Miranda Shirnia Mrs. Miranda Shirnia Music Chair, Royal Wootton Bassett Arts Festival

MUSIC ADJUDICATORS

GARY SIELING - PIANO

Gary was born in Bedfordshire and educated at Dunstable Grammar School. He read for his BMus degree at the University of London, Goldsmiths’ College and while a student played for the debut of the London Cantata Choir with whom he is still associated. He studied organ with Peter Moorse, Nicholas Danby at the Royal College of Music, Dr Peter le Huray at St Catherine’s College Cambridge, and Jane Parker-Smith. He was awarded FRCO in 1981 and MA in Performance from Anglia Ruskin University in 1997, studying organ with Nicholas Kynaston at Caius College Cambridge.

Gary was organist of Dunstable Priory and then Assistant Master of Music at Peterborough Cathedral. During his time there he was Conductor of the Peterborough Philharmonic Society, Director of the St Peter’s Singers, and Founder and Associate Conductor of the City of Peterborough Symphony Orchestra. He also taught organ and piano at Oundle and Stamford Schools. He played for the Cathedral Choir on two tours of America in addition to regular TV and radio broadcasts and recordings.

Now living in Reading, Gary is Associate DoM at St Giles-in-Reading, Director of the Berkshire Baroque Consort and the Founder and Director of the chamber choir ‘FineChants’ which has recently sung at Brussels, Cologne and St Paul’s Cathedrals. He works as a freelance organist, harpsichordist, tutor, conductor, adjudicator, and examiner for the Royal College of Organists. Organ concert venues in this country include St Paul’s, Canterbury and Westminster Cathedrals, King’s College Cambridge and Westminster Abbey. He has made ten international concert tours visiting Denmark, Germany, Italy and USA.

Gary is very popular as a music adjudicator because of his cheerful approach and positive, encouraging comments. He has been asked back many times to a number of Festivals in the UK and abroad. He spent the summers of 2009 and 2011 as the Music Adjudicator to the Sri Lanka Performing Arts Festival.

Gary likes to relax by travelling, exploring old churches, and messing about on the Kennet and Avon canal in his narrowboat. He is therefore able to travel to Festivals on or near the inland waterways system and provide his own accommodation!

SUZANNE HIGGINS - VOICE

After studies in Yorkshire, Liège and Cologne, in which latter cities she joined the opera choruses, Suzanne taught singing in Aachen and at the University of Cologne. Since returning to England she has worked with the BBC singers, London Voices, the Britten Singers, the London Sinfonietta and Classical Productions and has taken operatic roles for London City Opera and London Opera Players. She has performed for Music in Hospitals since 1990. A member of the St. Giles Cripplegate quartet since 1989, Suzanne is a Freeman of the City of London. She currently teaches singing in Hertfordshire, Oxford and London and adjudicates for the British and International Federation of Festivals
