Health Risks of Nicotine for Youth: A Minnesota Department of Health advisory informing health care professionals and parents of the public health risks of nicotine exposure.

E-Cigarette Use Poses Health Threat to Youth and Youth Adults: Report from the Surgeon General that comprehensively reviews the public health issue of electronic cigarettes and its impact on young people. The Web site also offers tools for parents and a public service announcement.

Know the Risks: E-cigarettes and Youth: A new Web site for parents and others who care about young people that provides facts about the dangers of nicotine e-cigarette use.

Parent Tip Sheet (PDF): A tip sheet for parents to help them talk to their teens about the potential health risks of e-cigarettes.

Results from the 2016 Minnesota Student Survey (MSS) revealed a decline in use of conventional tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, little cigars, and chewing tobacco among ninth and eleventh grade students. In 2016, 8.4 percent of 11th grade students smoked

cigarettes in the past 30 days, down 31 percent from 12.2 percent in 2013. These are the lowest levels of teen smoking ever reported on the survey. However, use of electronic cigarettes by young people has emerged as a major health concern. Among 11th grade students, 17.1 percent reported using electronic cigarettes or vaping devices in the past 30 days, twice as many as those who smoked regular cigarettes. View all MSS data regarding youth tobacco use on the MN Department of Health Factsheet.
