Parent Tip Sheet (PDF): A tip sheet for parents to help them talk to their teens about the potential health risks of e-cigarettes.
Results from the 2016 Minnesota Student Survey (MSS) revealed a decline in use of conventional tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, little cigars, and chewing tobacco among ninth and eleventh grade students. In 2016, 8.4 percent of 11th grade students smoked
cigarettes in the past 30 days, down 31 percent from 12.2 percent in 2013. These are the lowest levels of teen smoking ever reported on the survey. However, use of electronic cigarettes by young people has emerged as a major health concern. Among 11th grade students, 17.1 percent reported using electronic cigarettes or vaping devices in the past 30 days, twice as many as those who smoked regular cigarettes. View all MSS data regarding youth tobacco use on the MN Department of Health Factsheet. Visit the MN Department of Health web page to learn more about the MSS survey, and to view additional data reports regarding Minnesota’s youth. With most student data kept or able to be put into their Google Apps for Education @isd728.org accounts, students can export their data directly from Google Apps with Google Takeout (https://ww.google.com/settings/takeout). RHS has a new tool to help students explore college and career options.
The Minnesota Career Information System (MCIS) is an Internet-based system that combines a wealth of career, educational and labor market information into one comprehensive, easy-to-use exploration tool. With MCIS, students and clients can:
Learn about over 520 occupations Develop a personal portfolio and personal learning plan Research colleges, universities and career schools Find scholarships and financial aid Improve job search skills and create a resume Students set up accounts and took an interest inventory on 2/17. The website is https://mncis.intocareers.org. A link to the website and log in information is posted under the “RHS Counseling and Guidance” course on Schoology. This is a great resource to explore college and career possibilities with your student. Please contact Jacy Shrestha, Counselor and College and Career Specialist, with any questions.
