dylan Thomas’ rich and poetic masterpiece paints a unique picture of the sleeping and waking desires of the eccentric community of llareggub.

Moving from the wonderfully vivid dream world of the sleepers’ minds, through to the cacophony of waking life in the village, we are led by the mysterious narrator through the darker desires of the town’s inhabitants. He unearths the terrifying nightmares and private tragedy behind the town’s respectable veneer, but the inhabitants of llareggub have a lust for life that fills their world with humour and hope.

Young Welsh director, Adele Thomas, brings together an ensemble of Welsh actors to reinvent this touchingly comic riot of a play presenting humanity in all its mad glory.

JUST BETWEEN OURSELvES

PRIvATE FEARS IN PUBLIC PLACES

MAN OF THE MOMENT

Dennis is trying to sell his wife Vera’s car. the engine’s not been turned over in a while and the door is stuck, but it’s a good little motor all the same and if it’s not used soon, it might break down altogether. Reluctant buyer neil and his even more reluctant wife Pam are proving tricky to convince. Meanwhile, Vera dutifully shuttles cups of tea to the garage, in a bid to avoid the relentless finger-pointing of Dennis’ overbearing mother. told over four birthdays, this brilliantly observed black comedy reveals the hairline cracks in two suburban marriages. often shocking and agonisingly hilarious, Just Between Ourselves confirmed Ayckbourn as a serious comic writer of the highest order. this play is directed by Mark Rosenblatt, who recently directed Ayckbourn’s Snake In The Grass at the Matrix theatre in los Angeles and was last at Royal & Derngate to direct A Passionate Woman in 2002.

MAN OF THe MOMeNT

Vic Parks has it all – a villa in Spain, a trophy wife and a swimming pool to die for. After years of celebrity, Vic’s about to come face to face with the man who made it all possible, and this time it will be captured on camera. Who is the real Vic and will the television director get the dramatic reunion she is banking on?

taking a dive into the vacuous world of celebrity culture and reality tV, Man Of The Moment is arguably even more relevant today than when first written. A biting satire on the state of the nation, this darkly comic story explores how we create heroes and villains and what happens to the little guy caught in the middle.

Four whalers find themselves trapped in the belly of a whale. As they ponder the irony of their fate they recount a story of Moby Dick, sparkling with their own fantastical flourishes. the novel’s epic examination of good, evil, fate and obsession is lost on them. And then, mysteriously, found on them again.

Will Ahab’s thirst for revenge be unhinged by the well-meaning but staggeringly inept attentions of his crew? now that he has found true love, is ishmael still fated to be the sole survivor of the Pequod? What does a cannibal harpoonist from Bavaria eat?

Will the cameo appearance by legendary screen actor Awesome Whales scupper everything? And how do you make a whale throw up?

Following the huge success of Cooped in 2007, Spymonkey returns with this whale of a show, co-produced by Royal & Derngate.

Robert is about to start a new life across the ocean, whilst brother Andy is looking forward to settling on the family farm. But the realisation that they love the same woman results in them swapping lives as fate takes hold of the Mayo family.

A powerful story of youthful dreams crashing into reality and the human spirit being tested almost beyond endurance, this is the play that formulated Eugene O’Neill’s tragic vision of America.

Heavenly has almost everything a young woman could desire but one spring is forced to decide between her handsome but wild lover Dick, and the respectable and sensitive Arthur. Her actions will have consequences for both her debt ridden family and other young people in the town, as they are all caught up in a storm that threatens to tear their lives apart.

Many of the preoccupations of Tennessee Williams’ classic plays are found in this extraordinary tale of young people struggling to reconcile the expectations of society and their volatile passions.

Creative Projects for schools, colleges and universities are a vital part of the theatre’s identity and are at the heart of all our work.

All year round, Royal & Derngate works closely with schools and colleges from across northamptonshire and neighbouring Counties to create a wide-ranging programme exploring subjects relevant to the English, Drama, Dance, Music and Art & Design curriculums.

We also provide accompanying projects for our shows, many of which are free, and details of which can be found in our Creative Projects newsletter. if you would like to receive additional copies of this brochure, would like more details about our Creative Project work or would like to discuss ideas for developing tailor-made projects with your institution, then please contact our Creative Projects Manager, Alex Soulsby, on 0160 627566 or email [email protected]

Royal & Derngate provide creative opportunities for 2 – 25 year olds across the County. As well as our 10 regular Youth theatre groups, we deliver a diverse range of projects enabling young people to engage with theatre making.

one of our most recent projects involved 30 young people creating an online graphic novel. Working closely with actors, directors, photographers, digital artists, graphic designers and a music producer, the project challenged the media’s depiction of teenage crime, focusing on themes of public fear and mistrust.

the end result was a new website that was launched at the Roadmender earlier this year. it can be found at www.hypercomproject.com

We run a number of groups and projects for members of the local community working with at least 400 adults from northamptonshire every month. our Community Actors group and Community Choir offer a variety of performance opportunities both within the theatre and other local venues, whilst The Play’s The Thing group provides a diverse programme of plays for those with a passion for discussing theatre.

We have also begun a series of master classes with professional writers in collaboration with theatre Writing Partnership, to which anyone is welcome.

For more information on our groups and Creative Projects, contact the Arts team on 0160 655757 or email [email protected]
