THE THISTLE
NEWSLETTER 2013-2014
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – GREG MANION – 519-787-0587
Comrades it has been a very difficult first year of office with the loss of two great executive members,
Comrades Barney Beirnes & Les Willis. Your executive has done a fantastic job in picking up from where these
two fine gentleman left off.
The membership for our branch has stayed strong and it is very encouraging to see the folks who have
volunteered their time helping with some Catering Events, Weekly Sandwiches, Wing Nights and Sunday
Morning Breakfasts. I would like to list names however I don’t want to insult someone by missing anyone. The
effort of this group of people has created some positive revenues for the branch and I look forward to working
with them over the years to come.
Our Ladies Auxiliary has been a strong supporter of the Branch and with their generous donation last year we
now have two quality deep fryers in the kitchen that will also help us with earning more revenue at Branch
Special Events. We are very fortunate to have the LA as many Branches have seen their LA disband.
One thing that I would like to remind all members is that we have to stay positive and be opened minded
enough to accept change in how we do things. Our Legion Mission Statement “To serve veterans and their
dependents, to promote Remembrance, and to act in the service of Canada and its communities” has not
changed and will remain what we stand for.
I need to remind members that it’s NOT the President or the Executive that make all the decisions on how the
Branch will run. Our job is to advise and protect the Branch. It is YOU the members of this Branch that tell us
if a recommendation made by the Executive can be carried out. We need a strong voice from our members at
the monthly General Meetings. Please make an effort to attend these meetings.
Please feel free to contact me or any member of the Executive if you have a concern or an idea that will help
improve the Branch. We are a very strong and proud Branch and it’s a real pleasure representing you as the
Branch President.

I am privileged to serve as Chaplain for the Royal Canadian Legion, Fergus Branch 275. I offer my
participation at such occasions as the observation of Remembrance Day on November 11th
at the Cenotaph, and
Decoration Day at Belsyde Cemetery the second Sunday in June.
I am available for events requiring the services of a Chaplain, particularly for Memorial Services offered
through the Branch, when requested to do so by any family member of a fallen Comrade. I am an Anglican
priest with the Diocese of Niagara, I recently celebrated the 21st anniversary of my ordination, and look
forward to working with you. I can be contacted through the Branch Services Officer, Mervin Fisher, or by
phoning the Branch.
*************************************
DECORATION DAY
Decoration Day was on Sunday, June 9th
, 2013 at Belsyde Cemetery. Members of the
Royal Canadian Legion and community joined together for a service to give recognition and to honour those
who fought in the wars throughout Canadian history and also to honour and remember emergency service
workers, those who volunteered and gave the supreme sacrifice to their community, and to remember their
loved ones.
The Legion Colour Party formed at 1:45 p.m. just outside Belsyde Cemetery and was escorted by the Fergus
Pipe Band. President Greg Manion, Past President Ray Pearse and Mayor Joanne Ross-Zuj officiated at the
service which commenced at 2:00 p.m. Members of the Legion and the community participated in honouring
and showing their respect. After the service flowers were available to place on the graves of their loved ones.
We gratefully thank the members of the Legion and community who attended to celebrate this inspiring tribute.
DECORATION DAY next year – SUNDAY, JUNE 8th
, 2014 please plan to attend. (Please bring a lawn chair)

QUEEN ELIZABETH II DIAMOND JUBILEE
On Tuesday, October 9th
, 2012, the Branch had a presentation ceremony attended by Hon. Michael Chong, PC,
MP and Ted Arnott, MPP. Three of our members were presented with the Diamond Jubilee Medal – Byron
Beirnes, Ray Pearse and Jamie Hiller for their contributions to our local community.
5
LADIES AUXILIARY REPORT – CHRISTINE EVANS, President
It has been another busy year for the Ladies Auxiliary as we continue to support the community, Legion and its
members through various activities. Since last September, we have enjoyed putting on our Legion Week
Luncheon, Christmas Bazaar, Special Bingos (Legion Week/Christmas), and participating in Legion Breakfasts.
Our luncheon committee has prepared the Remembrance Day lunch, special requests catering (i.e. touring
groups) and funeral gatherings - where their support is very much appreciated by the families.
As an organization, we have also taken time to celebrate. This past year we held our Christmas Volunteers
dinner (thank you members, for cooking), a Night at the Races, and our annual last meeting of the season with
an informal BBQ format.
We always have a lot of fun as a team, not only when celebrating but when we are volunteering. We have many
years of delivering dedicated service and in order to continue, we need to expand our pool of participants. So
come on out, have a good time while being part of one of our many committees or event teams and bring a
friend!
In addition, we are looking for new ideas. If you have a good idea for a fundraiser or an event, or how to do
things, bring them to a meeting or send me an email ([email protected]). All ideas are welcome!
Finally, I would like to congratulate Pat Brawley on receiving her 50 Year Service pin at our December dinner.
Pat is now serving as our 1st Vice President; however, she has held all roles on our executive including
President, Past President and Membership. Pat's many years of dedication are very much appreciated and we
value her leadership and contribution not only to the Ladies Auxiliary but the Legion as a whole.
YOUTH EDUCATION – Fred Hiller – 519-843-2343
The choir from St. Joseph Catholic School sang “We’ll Never Forget” at the Remembrance Day Service at the
Fergus Cenotaph and the choir from Victoria Public School sang the same song at the Branch Remembrance
Dinner. We were privileged to have the author and composer of “We’ll Never Forget” as our guest speaker at
the Remembrance Dinner. The choirs were an addition to both these services and we thank all involved for
their dedication and time.
The response to our 2012 poster, essay and poem Remembrance Contest was very rewarding.

We thank all the students for their efforts; they have shown their thoughts and we hope they will again
participate in the 2013 Remembrance Contest. We thank the school staff for their time and effort in assisting
with the program. In September I will be visiting each school with the information regarding entering the 2013
Remembrance Contest. If any student wishes to enter and their school is not participating in the contest they
can contact me individually.

VETERANS SERVICES – MERVIN FISHER – 519-787-5111
A reminder to all veterans – the rules for receiving assistance from V.A.C. and the V.I.P. change yearly,
everyone should check to see if they qualify.
The Legion representative, Randy Groundwater, will be available on Tuesday, October 1st at Branch 275.
Please notify me if you wish to see Mr. Groundwater so I can schedule an appointment for you to see him.
60th
Anniversary of the Korean War Armistice - 26 nations took part in the three-year war before a
peace pact was signed on July 27, 1953. More than 26,000 Canadians were sent to fight in Korea. Veterans
Affairs Canada said 516 of them died. Canadians who fought in the war served their country with distinction.
The Legislature has created a Korean War Veterans Day to be held each year on July 27th
.
70th
Anniversary of D-DAY is June 6th
, 2014.- A day to remember – It will be a very memorable
occasion to all Veterans, especially those who landed on Juno Beach and some of those veterans will be
returning to pay their respects to those comrades left behind.
A MOMENT IN TIME//JULY 26, 1936
Vimy Memorial is Unveiled - More than 6,000 Canadian veterans made the trek back to Vimy Ridge in
northern France, where they had fought one of the most defining battles of the First World War – and in their
young nation’s history. On a sunny July day nearly 20 years after the successful assault on the heavily fortified
German bluff, more than 100,000 people gathered on its highest point to witness the unveiling of Canada’s
largest overseas monument – though it rested on Canadian soil, given as thanks from France. “It was ‘over
there’ that Canadian armies fought and died. It is ‘over there’ that their final monument must stand,” King
Edward VIII intoned. Sculptor Walter Allward laboured for 11 years to build the memorial, carving into the
limestone the names of the 11,285 Canadian soldiers killed in France whose final resting places were unknown.
PROPERTY REPORT – Tom Semanyk – 519-843-1432
In the past year there have been many improvements to the building:
- Banquet Hall doors to the outside have been replaced
- Kitchen door to the outside has been replaced
- Awnings on the front of the building were in need of replacement and this has been done
- Two new deep fryers were installed in the kitchen and the range hood fire system was upgraded with
assistance from the Ladies Auxiliary for which we thank them
- Eaves troughs on the patio were upgraded to prevent water running down the outside walls and entering
the building
Over the past year many small repairs have been made to lighting, plumbing and coolers and repairs to the beer
tapping system. Overall the building is in very good shape and we will strive to maintain it to the high standard
we all expect.
HONOURS & AWARDS & BURSARY – Jim Darlington - 519-767-2110
Service pins for members with 20 years or more service will be presented at the Remembrance Day
banquet to eligible recipients in attendance; 5, 10 and 15 year service pins, as well as those not
presented at the banquet, will be available for bar pickup. Alternate arrangements can be made by
contacting me at above number.
Please contact me if there are questions concerning bursary applications. Application forms are available
at the bar.

SICK & VISITING – Beckie Mason – 519-831-3904
I along with Branch representatives visit veterans and members confined to area senior residences and nursing
homes during the Christmas season. “Thinking of You” and “Get Well” cards are sent to members and
“Sympathy” cards are sent to family members. If you know of a member who is not well please advise me as
every effort is made not to miss anyone. I enjoy being your representative and look forward to serving you.
PUBLIC RELATIONS REPORT – Brian Bielby - 519-843-5662
It has been a very busy year for Public Relations at the branch. One of the highlights was working with the
different chairs to achieve their project goals. The role of the PRO, along with assisting these chair people, is to
promote the purposes of the Royal Canadian Legion
We have a very strong alliance with the Wellington Advertiser and over the past year have had great coverage
of many of our events, thanks to the help of Sherry Clarke. Sarah McGoldrick has done an excellent job in
maintaining our Web Site. We have had several pictures in the Legion Magazine, which promotes our efforts
throughout Canada. Please, when you are finished with your Legion Magazine, take your copy to your next
medical, dental, or other appointment and leave it with the other magazines in the waiting room.
I would like to point out that all members of this branch are part of the Public Relations committee and we need
you to be the ambassadors of the branch and the Royal Canadian Legion to promote what we are about, and the
great contribution we make within our local community.
TRAINING REPORT – Brian Bielby – 519-843-5662
Most of our executive has attended seminars regarding their specific chairs, where a lot of valuable legion
material was gathered. It is essential to the continued growth of our branch that we continue to attend these
training sessions. This year several of your executive attended the “Legion University” training sessions, I must
thank those individuals for demonstrating their commitment to the Royal Canadian Legion. The information we
all received has already proven to be valuable in the operation of the Fergus Legion. We have held several
Smart Serve programs, catering to our own members as well as other community organizations.
ALL the seminars and conferences are open to ALL legion members. It would be great for anyone interested in
the operation of the legion to participate in some of these sessions. I would like to thank our executive for their
continued attendance at the seminars and conferences. This has been noted several times by Zone and District
officers.
HALL RENTAL AND CATERING REPORT – Brian Bielby - 519-843-5662
It is vital to the survival of the Fergus Legion that we have a thriving hall rental year. Please promote the use of
the Fergus Legion hall for any functions that you may be involved with, or know of. I would like to thank
Karen Small for the effort that she has put in to our hall rentals, Alma Baking & Catering continue to be our
primary caterer - the service and quality they provide, at a very reasonable price, is an asset to the Legion.
Please remember that the use of the Club Room on Friday and Saturday evenings is available to members at no
cost. It is an ideal low cost venue for groups of up to 75 people.
With the poor economy, the drinking and driving laws, and the overall change in event planning, we are
noticing less bookings and smaller numbers of guests. We have to make more money on the sale of food, and
we are always looking for people to take on this challenging role. A big thanks to Maria and Alex George for
stepping up to the plate with sandwiches and the funeral lunches.
8
POPPY REPORT – RAY PEARSE – 519-843-5297 The Poppy Campaign in 2012 was again very successful with almost $22,000.00 being donated by the citizens
of Fergus. The Army Cadets and the Air Cadets did a great job of canvassing during the Campaign and
assisting with the Remembrance Day Dinner. The following received donations from the 2012 Poppy Fund:
Air Cadets $750.00 Legion Bursary Fund $2,500.00
Army Cadets $750.00 Charitable Foundation $2,500.00
Navy Cadets $750.00 Homeless Veterans Fund $1,500.00
Our 2013 Annual Poppy Campaign will commence on Friday, October
25th and will run until Sunday, November 10
th. We will be looking for
many volunteers so if you can spare some of your time please let me
know. We ask all members who are able to give two (2) hours of their
time to canvass. Please contact – Ray Pearse – 519-843-5297.
CANTEEN REPORT – Greg Manion - 519-0587
Comrades your Club Room Bar is still providing great customer service due to the hard work of our Bar
Stewards, Karen, Marilyn, Heather, Terry and Merv. We have a committee in place that has been looking at
revamping the appearance of the Club Room. They will be presenting their recommendations to your Executive
this fall. If we feel that the upgrades enhance the Club Room the presentation will be made to our members at a
General Meeting this fall. We are conducting monthly inventory counts and are finding the results are in line.
Please remember the Club Room is available for members to use at no cost for small private functions or you
can rent the Banquet Hall at member’s rate. I would like to thank the members who have taken the Smart Serve
course and volunteer to work the bar in the Banquet Hall.
NEVADA REPORT – Ray Pearse – 519-843-5297
The Legion Nevada Committee and the Branch Executive have been busy again this year as many organizations
have requested our financial assistance. It is our appreciation that many of these organizations have participated
in the Legion Sunday Morning Breakfasts.
