ROW: GarageBand 101Once on the iDisk, you will see folders marked for each group, and each school.

Friday, September 24th, each school will upload a 30-second drum track to their own folder on the iDisk. Hereʼs how to do that.

Step 1: When you open GarageBand, choose “Loops”.

Save the file as noted in the Project Journal. (i.e. Canada_092410)

Figuring Out time: The time button has little arrows pointing up and down. If you push those buttons it will toggle between time/ measures/ key/ chords.

You are looking for “time”... you want your song to be 30 seconds. (Thatʼs approximately 15-16 measures.)

Step 2: Now comes the fun part! Right now, you have an empty band! You will need to “audition” your drummers to see which one you like! Hereʼs the great thing about these band members- 1) They are ALWAYS on time! 2) They ALWAYS play in the pitch

and tempo that you want!

BUT- They donʼt always play well together! Thatʼs where your ear comes in!

Choose your drummer. There are many drummers you can choose from (if you have not already downloaded the complete GarageBand loops from Apple, do that now! Itʼs a big download, so donʼt do it while students are waiting to use the program!) You will need to download all the free loops, as when you get a track from another country, if you have not downloaded the tracks, you will not be able to listen to them.

ROW: GarageBand 101Simply drag and drop your selected drummer to the top of your page.

To make the drummer play for a longer period of time, place your cursor on the top right corner of the blue loop and it will turn into a circular arrow. This will allow you to drag the drummer out and play the loop as many times as youʼd like.

NOTE: You do not have to have 30-seconds of the same exact sound. Play with different drummers.

Have you noticed that the top line is blue and the bottom line is green?

Blue is a studio musician that has come into the studio and is playing live!

Green is a synthesizer musician. The BEAUTY of the green instruments is that you can read the musical notation. You can also drag and drop the actual musical notes to change their pitch. I would NOT suggest that, however, for this project - as it will change the pitch of your loop.

ROW: GarageBand 101After you have selected your drummer, and like the sound/s, make sure you SAVE!

The Project Journal has your exact name you should save it under. Place it in YOUR file on the iDisk.

Each week, you will check with the Project Journal to see what tracks you are picking up. Letʼs revisit the Canada tracks. On October 1, Canada will pick up the file on the iDisk from St Stephen school in MI, USA (StS_MI_USA_092410). They will add the bass guitar to that file and RENAME it as StS_MI_USA_100110. Then PLACE IT BACK IN THE “USA_MI_St Stephen” file!

The file ALWAYS goes back in the original folder of the creator of the drums.
