Ignition Interestingly or is it coincidence, since my mutterings about the state of our roads last month there has been some action. Two sections of road either side of the Waitati turn-off have been resurfaced with chip seal. A start, but there’s still a long way to go. And would you believe it, we were back in the City of Sails for our sons weeding in early February when I spied the same Rover SD1 and its elderly driver I reported seeing cruising on a motorway in December, this time they were plyng the street of downtown Pukekohe - there are no immediate plans to return to Auckland but I won-der what the odds would be for a third sighting ? We planned to be in and around Auckland for a week leading up to our son’s wed-ding. To fill in the days between time we agreed we would go for a road trip around the East Cape. At this stage we were accompanied by one of our daughters and had arranged to meet our other daughter in Gisborne 3 days later. To tackle the journey we hired a Holden Captiva which was an interesting adventure in itself a story for another day. It was a leisurely road trip with two overnight stops one at Tirau and the other at Lake Waika-remoana which was at the end of New Zealand’s windiest gravel road through what used to be Te Urewera National Park . Our third day on the road was Waitangi Day meaning our options of finding somewhere for a good coffee were limited unfortu-nately that just happened to be Wairoa but fortunately we did find one café open. On our way through to Gisborne we passed a sign saying Young Nicks Head which had contact detail to access the walking track out to the end of the headland. This was a relatively simple process and well worth the effort but the walk itself does require a reasonable level of fitness. Next morning after walking out to Young Nick’s Head we returned to downtown Gisborne awaiting the arrival of our daughter there was plenty of time for a coffee and shopping for some last minute weeding accessories. With our second daughter on board we left Gisborne and continued on our journey back to Auckland with overnight stay at Tolaga Bay, a visit out to East Cape lighthouse and a final night in Ohope then onto Auckland for the wedding. This was our third visit to these parts and like many other places here in New Zealand its another beautiful part of our country and well worth going out of your way to visit. Safe Motoring - Alan

The Captiva played its part providing roomy comfort for the four of us and performed well even the fuel consumption wasn’t too bad but it did had some irritating habits, like thinking for itself and an array of unpleasant buzzers and beepers. The most irri-tating thing was the doors. If you took the ‘key’ with you the doors would automati-cally lock within seconds of getting out. There was hardly time to get from the driv-er’s door to the rear hatch before that locked. Too bad if you just wanted your jacket or were carrying a heavy load you had to either fish around for it in your pocket or wait for the person with the key to unlock it. The most useful advantage of this sys-tem I see would be if you had Alzheimer’s or you regularly forgot to lock your doors. One daughter took umbrage as I complained about how stupid that it was, she told me to get a life as these were all useful things to make life better – I don’t think so.

At Mosgiel RSA at 7.00p.m.

Present: Bill & Gaynor Falconer, Bill Olsen, John Moore, Joe Smith, Elea-nore Clark, Rebecca Fox & Ray Pilley, Alan Matchett, Norman Sparrow. Apologies: Carleen Sparrow, Bernie & Steph Halford, Jenny & Kevin Phil-lips, Ross & Veneta Allan

Minutes of the previous meeting held on the 20th of February 2018 as de-tailed in the newsletter circulated passed as a true and correct record. Moved, Ray. Seconded, Bill. Carried

Matters Arising: If we want to put a feature in Classic Car Magazine we need to supply them a profile and photos. “Club Corner” is a one page club profile published in their magazine. Rebecca Fox has offered her Journalist skills to write a pro-file for us. Alan will send a copy of his ARCC AGM report to Rebecca to use as a guide for her draft profile.

Club advertising was discussed and the following items were considered. Car windscreen banners (we already have two), number plate surrounds, wide brimmed hats and business cards. It was decided to get costs for wind-screen banners and business cards and discuss again at our next meeting.

Storage of club information and documents (excluding Library books) was discussed again Alan, Ray and Norman to meet in April to go through the many boxes and catalogue what we have so a decision on what to do with it can be made. Alan will contact Jan Smith to see what she has stored at her home.

Norman reported on the Best of British rally on March 11. There will be two runs, one short and one long. This year funds raised will be given to Chat Bus. Club volunteers to help out at the start and there was a request to use our gazebos. The rally leaves from the Dunedin Ice Stadium carpark from 9am. Destination is Outram Reserve.

To purchase alcohol at meetings held at the Mosgiel Memorial RSA, their rules require a member of our club to be a member of the RSA or an affiliat-ed club. It was suggested that our club pay for our President to be a member to help us meet the RSA rules. It was also decided that the RSA membership should be an agenda item at our next AGM. Moved Ray, Seconded Bill; that our club pay the $55.00 membership fee for this year. Carried

Alan read out his club report for the 2018 ARCC AGM. The report covered our many highlights from the last year. A copy of Alan’s report will be pub-lished in our newsletter.

Meeting closed at 8.10p.m. Next meeting Tuesday the 3rd of April.

Hello there,

Firstly, a big thank-you to everyone who travelled to Outram on Sunday and made our event a success. An especially big thanks to the folk that came from Invercargill, Waimate, Central and North Otago. We hope you enjoyed the day. Following months of planning it was certainly gratifying to see such a great turn-out (110 cars) and sunny weather – phew! Also thanks to our lone motorcyclist this year – we were expecting more bikes but possibly a case of quality over quantity?? We hope to see more of you next time.

As we are still receiving some sponsorship and awaiting some bills, so it is too early to announce the sum total of funds raised for ChatBus.

However it is looking like a healthy amount so thank-you very much for your sup-port.

The Prize list is attached. Congratulations to all winners, and for those who had left before the announcement of prizes, I will be sending your certificates out to you soon.We have posted photographs on our Facebook page, and please send in your own pictures if you wish them to be posted also.We value your feed-back so feel free to make any suggestions to help make the next event even better.

Looking forward to next year – circle the second Sunday in March 2019 in your dia-ries.

ROVER CAR CLUB OF OTAGO ACTIVITY REPORT MARCH 2017 -FEBRUARY 2018

The Rover Car Club of Otago has had another successful year holding on to a steady membership over the 12 month period. Members come from a widespread area across Otago and Southland from Palmerston to the north, Invercargill in the south and in-land to Winton, Dipton and Cromwell and many places in between with longstanding club members now living in Auckland and Kaikohe. In 2017 it was unfortunate that no members were able to attend the 2017 ARCC Ral-ly in Hawkes Bay, however for the 2018 rally in Methven has attracted registrations from several club members. The Club has held 11 monthly meetings (1st Tuesday of each month) with participa-tion from our members travelling from as far away as Invercargill on occasion but on a regular basis from Balclutha / Kaitangata and elsewhere in the greater Dunedin area. Club events and activities have been well supported throughout the year; Best of British on March 2017 sponsored by the local Jaguar club was supported by our club the club and members Norman and Carleen Sparrow’ s sparkling red P6B took the prize for the Best of Marque There were 75 cars on display and $1,400 was raised for the Taieri Beach School. The Memorial Run (a celebration of members past) on May 14 2017, started with a visit to the Otago Museum’s Planetarium then an afternoons driving tour across the Taieri plain, over the coastal hills to Brighton then back to Dunedin to Steph and Bernie Halford’s for a potluck tea, prize giving and a few drinks, The AGM was held on July 22nd with a club subsidised dinner. During the formal part of the evening our long time president Jeff Sparrow retired as did our secretary Jan Smith. Alan Matchett was voted into the President position but unfortunately there were no takers for a permanent secretary’s position but offers of ad-hoc help were received and noted. In September the Club celebrated the 50 anniversary of the introduction of the Rover V8 during the Auto-Spectacular car show at the Edgar Stadium. There were five V8 rovers on display (filling our allocated space), representing the different eras, P5B, P6B series 1, P6B series 2, an SD1 and a Landrover Discovery with a supporting display of information panels and examples of the very first and last v8 production engines. The annual Nove Rove on the 4th /5th attracted 20 members and 10 cars. The group started in Dunedin travelling to Palmerston and through to the Strath Taieri. There were stop-overs at the Macraes gold mine the Naseby Motor Museum and the Oteake Conservation Park for lunch. All vehicles made the long steep climb over the spec-tacular Dansy’s Pass road, down into the Waitaki Valley following the Waitaki River up to our overnight stop at Otematata. On Sunday it was a relatively early start to get to Benmore Dam by 9.00am for a guided tour then it was a leisurely but unfortunate-ly for some not an entirely trouble free trip home. In January 2018 the Club started the year off with a members barbeque at Kaka Point at the invitation of members Bill and Gaynor Falconer and the first monthly meeting for the year was held on February 20th. Alan Matchett President
