Status of Sri Lanka Regarding Climatic Change Issues

• Sri Lanka is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world tothe effects of climate change, which poses a significant risk to theeconomic development of the country.

• Germanwatch, publishing the 2019 Long-Term Climate Risk Index has revealed this information at the climate summit held in Poland on December 5.

“Sri Lanka has topped the ranking of climate changevulnerable countries. Sri Lanka has ranked second becauseof the series of extreme weather events – like the powerfulstorms that caused heavy rainfall especially in theSouthwest, that resulted in floods and landslides; and onthe other hand, the continued drought in the Northern andNorth central part of the country which occurredthroughout four consecutive years.”

Key performance Indicator (KPI) of the Strategic plan for 2019 to 2023

❑ Waste Management Index (WMI)

WMI indicates the amount of waste properly managed out of the total waste collection in percentage wise. WMI can be calculated by the formula given below and WMI is a percentage relevant to the respective year.
