Stewardship Report as of September 2, 2018
Cindy
As Christians in the modern era, the question we need to be asking ourselves is: Do you want to have any spiritual children and grandchildren in our faith? If you answered yes to this question, then we must get serious about our Christian faith formation, because Christian formation begins with us. And we need to get very serious about our own discipleship if we expect our children to have our faith. But, guess what? That does not happen overnight. It takes effort and commitment on our part. What is alarming is how seriously other religions like Islam are. No effort is made to dumb down the Islamic faith to make it quick and easy in order to accommodate adherents’ busy life-styles. Instead, you see an insistence on rigor and great commitment to every facet of their beliefs. Islam offers a very substantial alternative vision of God and how He communi-cates with us. Muslims are serious about their faith, and they are not for sale (no compro-mise) to the culture. They are committed to teaching their youth their vision of reality, and Muslim kids know their faith.
What is more, adult Muslims are not only commit-ted to teaching their faith to their kids, they are just as committed to living out their faith and thus providing the proper environment to surround and nurture their kids in their faith, a critical component of faith formation that we are woefully lacking. For instance, we say prayer is important, and it absolutely is. But, Islamic kids, along with everyone in their faith, pray five times per day, while we are lucky if we and our kids pray once or twice per day and maybe at meals. Would it surprise you to know that early Christians prayed eight times per day? The question we need to be asking ourselves is this: Will our children and grandchildren be able to withstand the challenge to faith that is coming, or will they simply abandon Christian faith and maybe even convert, e.g., to Islam, a cult, or even a gang? Let us not kid ourselves. A serious approach to discipleship will take serious devotion on our part and a substantial amount of time. Gone are the days when a workshop and a six-week course are all it takes to become a vital disciple of Jesus
Christ, if in fact that was ever accurate. Despite the fact we all want that quick fix, we need to remember that it took the Apostles three intense years as disciples of Christ, in His very presence, just to get started. What makes us think we can become disciples with anything less? This is what Foundational Discipleship is all about. It is a serious effort to form real disciples at a time when authentic discipleship is most need-ed. The fall class is almost full, but there are a few places left. So, sign up today, at the office or using the online form from our website. Once the class begins, you will not be able to begin Foundational Discipleship until next fall. Let’s make a difference not only with our children and grandchildren, but with the world. Signup today. Faithfully,
