"WE WON LAST WEEKEND, BUT THERE’S A VULNERABILITY TO THAT – WE CAN’T BE COMPLACENT BECAUSE WE’RE PLAYING AT HOME."

M A T C H P R E V I E W W I T H R O S E L E E J E N C K E

ON THE ROUND FOUR VICTORY OVER THE SWIFTS It always felt like we were in control. There were times in the first, second and third quarters that we could of pulled away, but we didn’t and that’s a credit to the Swifts. They work hard and keep you honest. For us it’s about pushing on when the opportunity arises and extending a lead earlier. In saying that, our third quarter was very good – we had a run of 9 unanswered goals with some great cohesion and variety in our play.

ON THE COHESION SINCE THE ARRIVAL OF ERIN BURGER Erin adds a lot of experience having played many games internationally for South Africa. She’s also got really good decision making skills on court which enhances our attack. A further understanding will come the more she plays with us, but she already adds great value. It’s important for us that we have great flexibility in being able to play either Erin, Caity or Jemma depending on who we need out on court.

ON THE CHALLENGE POSED BY MELBOURNE VIXENS It’s round five and the importance of this game for us is being able to back up a win at home the previous week. The Vixens won last weekend, we’re level pegging with them in the ladder and we understand there’s nothing much between us. It’ll be a really close game. We won last weekend, but there’s a vulnerability to that – we can’t be complacent

because we’re playing at home. We’ll do our homework and be really thorough in our game plan. The Vixens are a well drilled team. The don’t waste the ball much and they’re really disciplined, so we need to be just as disciplined with our ball use when we play against them.

ON THE LIGHTNING V COLLINGWOOD CLASH AFTER THE FIREBIRDS MATCH I’ll be watching with interest. It’s significant for Collingwood in that they’re playing against a top four team. They’re not in the top four and they’ll be wanting another big-name scalp. They’ll be looking to make a big statement this week coming up here and looking to back up a big win last week.

CAITLYN NEVINSW I T HQ&A

YOU’RE A FORMER MELBOURNE VIXEN BUT HAVE CALLED QUEENSLAND HOME SINCE JOINING THE CLUB FOR THE 2015 SEASON. DO YOU NOW CONSIDER YOURSELF A QUEENSLANDER? I’m Queensland through and through. Vixens provided me with my first opportunity at the elite level which I’m extremely grateful for, but I’m complete immersed in the Firebirds club and culture. I’m really happy and settled here. I have a lot of family down south, but (my husband) Sam and I have bought a home in Brisbane and we’re definitely settled. I think Brisbane and Queensland are now home.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE FIREBIRDS PROGRESSION THUS FAR IN 2017? I feel like we’ve been building over the course of every game we’ve played. We’ve had dramatic improvement from round one to now. The Vixens are a quality side as well and that’s the beauty of Suncorp Super Netball – every team is extremely tough. If we don’t put our best performance out there, we could easily be beaten. Our fourth quarter performances over the past few games have been exceptional, so we’re keen to continue that but work on adding consistency through the other three quarters.

THE FIREBIRDS SIT EVEN WITH THE VIXENS ON POINTS. HOW WILL THE TEAM APPROACH TONIGHT’S GAME? The Vixens don’t throw many balls away, so we need to make sure we make the most of any intercept or turnover we get. It’s going to be a really tough game. They’ve got a bit of flair up front with Kumwenda and Tegan Caldwell. They’re a young playing group that have been together for a couple of seasons – you can see their connections have built nicely. They play a really tough one-on-one defence game. They’ll work us right up to the final whistle and we’ll prepare accordingly.

HOW HAVE YOU ENJOYED MOVING BACK INTO WING ATTACK SINCE THE ARRIVAL OF ERIN BURGER? I definitely feel more settled through wing attack – it’s definitely familiar lining up next to Gretel on that transverse line. Erin has just slotted in brilliantly. She’s adding her own creative flair to our front end and we had some beautiful passages of play last weekend – the best we’ve had so far. If we can keep building we’ll be a strong force to match.

ON THE EXCITEMENT AROUND NETBALL DOUBLE HEADERS THIS SEASON A lot of girls will stay around and check out the Collingwood v Lightning game. The competition is so close. The top four is changing week in, week out and this match will be a cracker.

Premiership contenders are beginning to emerge as Suncorp Super Netball ended its fifth week of competition.

On Friday, the Firebirds beat a stubborn New South Wales Swifts side 62-53 in Brisbane to cement a spot in the top four. In a replay of the 2016 grand final, the Swifts proved game throughout and only trailed by one goal at three quarter time before Queensland showed their class to steamroll home by 9.

In Melbourne, the Vixens demolished West Coast Fever 56-44 to leave the Perth outfit winless after four games. Led valiantly by wing attack Liz Watson and dynamic defensive duo Emily Mannix and Jo Weston, the home side didn’t lose a term and posted a big 17-11 fourth quarter stand to leave the Fever reeling.

Sunshine Coast suffered their first loss of the season at USC Stadium on Saturday, going down to ladder-leaders Giants Netball 55-54 in a thriller. The Lightning held a four-goal lead at half-time off the back of spectacular 22 from 22 shooting from Diamonds star Caitlin Bassett, but a 16-11 third quarter fightback from the Giants set the stage for a tense finale. The orange and charcoal held their nerve to see out the game by a single goal and extend their record to 4-0.

Collingwood Magpies continued their climb up the ladder by defeating Adelaide Thunderbirds 64-45 at Hisense Arena. The Diamond-studded side will take a lot of confidence from a victory which saw them up by 19 goals at three quarter time before Adelaide stemmed the tide in the fourth to prevent a further blowout.
