RSM ADVANTAGE
A HOLISTIC APPROACH
As a pioneer in leadership education, we’ve designed our curriculum around a holistic approach to management that we call Personal Leadership Development (PLD). It’s a big idea, but a simple approach. At RSM we believe that by incorporating leadership ideas and best practices into everything you do during your EMBA, you add a powerful dimension to your future as a leader in the professional world.
Leading knowledgeOur expert academics and professional coaches have their finger on the pulse of the latest knowledge and best practices coming from researchers all over the world. You’ll have access to all of it during your Executive MBA through the PLD, and by learning from the experts here at RSM in Rotterdam.
Leading in actionWe believe in 'leadership in action' at RSM. Throughout the EMBA programme, you will come to know your true strengths using custom assessment tools, personal reflection and 360-degree feedback sessions with your team of fellow EMBA participants. Then you will apply your managerial acumen and judgment through active lessons such as in-class exercises, simulations, group work, peer reviews and coaching opportunities.
Leading support – personally and professionallyWith our open and collaborative culture, you work one-to-one with faculty, staff and peers who can support you throughout the programme. And we mean it. If you need extra support in any way, you always have access to personal coaching and mentorship.
“ Because of PLD, I’ve started to noticepositive changes when approaching
situations at home and at work. It’s making me a more effective leader which is the point of being here.”
Sergey Angelov, RussianExecutive MBA'17Managing director, Gazprom Sakhalin Holdings B.V.

CLASS OF 2017
A transformational experience
At RSM, we believe in experiential learning to be part of your transformational experience. That is why we constantly create new electives that provide you with experiences to hone your leadership skills. Our Catalunya Leadership Journey is one example of this. In the Spanish landscape, you will develop into a more authentic and successful leader while you have time and space to explore who you are, what you value, and why you value this. Another example is a leadership retreat in South Africa aiming to renew leadership through mindfulness, storytelling and silence. It takes place in the Bergplaas nature reserve, owned by Princess Irene of the Netherlands. The beauty and isolation allows you to slow down and think about what type of leader you would like to be.
PERSONAL COACHING
The Executive MBA programme requires you to thoroughly examine the drivers of your own behaviour. Discovering new things about yourself or realising where your blind spots are can at times be overwhelming. For this reason, we offer personal coaching to help you reflect and better understand your relationship with yourself and others. Working closely with a professional certified coach will give you the opportunity to discover and clarify what you want to achieve. You'll go deeper into self-discovery that elicits your own, creative solutions and strategies, while identifying ways to break through the things that are preventing you from moving forward. It also builds on your strengths and helps you unlock your potential to maximise performance. Our coaches hold the belief that you have the answers to your own problems within you, and are trained to support you on this path of discovery.
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
8
HIGHLIGHTS
Practical application of your new knowledge is a key factor in RSM’s EMBA programme. During the in-company project you apply the theories and critically assess the models that you learned in the first year of your EMBA. The six-month project, which you will complete at the same time as your other EMBA studies, takes place between March and August of the second study year and gives you the opportunity to focus on a real, concrete management challenge within your own organisation. This allows you to demonstrate your new abilities to identify the challenge, draw clear conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations. The project adds outstanding value for you and your employer, and provides an opportunity to leverage your MBA skills within other functional areas of your organisation.
IN-COMPANY PROJECT
EMBA EXCHANGE
You can also apply for a short exchange as part of the Executive MBA. This optional exchange takes place at other leading global business schools and allows you to add an even broader international experience to your EMBA programme. The exchange locations and formats differ per year.
9
An important feature of the Executive MBA are the international study tours. In each year of the programme you will have the opportunity to spend one week expanding your understanding of business in a significantly different socio-economic and cultural environment. Complex issues surrounding business with and within emerging economies are the focus of the international study tours. You'll also get the chance to experience business abroad first-hand. A typical week abroad consists of lectures, in-class discussions, and visits to local enterprises to gain an in-depth view of the local business and social culture. In the first year of your programme you will travel to a pre-determined destination with your EMBA cohort. In your second year, students from all MBA cohorts can choose from various destinations to enrich and diversify your learning experience. Typical places include China, the USA, Germany, South Africa, Latin America and the UK. We review and add locations each year. For all study tour destinations, travel costs are not included in the MBA tuition fee.

From improved performance in your organisation to long-term recognition as someone with ambition and advanced knowledge, you can expect to reap the benefits of your RSM EMBA for the rest of your career. An EMBA does not only change other people’s perception of you, it changes how you see yourself. Almost all of our EMBA alumni say that they achieved a sense of personal and professional empowerment after the programme, a deeper awareness of business opportunities, and a real sense of how those opportunities can be taken.
Career support Your motivation for embarking on your EMBA has been well researched and thought through, but there are more challenges ahead. For example, experiences in the EMBA programme could cause you to rethink your future. To assist
you with your progress and decision-making, RSM offers you one-to-one advice from one of our experienced career coaching professionals. By exploring your past experience and reflecting on your skills, goals and dreams, we will guide you through the changes you want to make. We will also advise you on how to improve and make use of your and our network, both socially and professionally, to support you in making the most of your talents and competences.
Global corporate networkAs an RSM EMBA participant, your corporate network will grow to comprise the international and talented peers you meet in the programme. The intensity of the EMBA experience cultivates strong bonds and lifelong networks. New connections will also be formed with executives from the companies that support RSM in multiple endeavours and
events. By the time you graduate from the programme, your personal contacts will span continents, generations, and industries.
Alumni networkUpon graduation from the programme, you will join RSM’s alumni network, which includes alumni from all of RSM's degree programmes, consisting of more than 30,000 professionals across more than 100 countries. Annual class reunions, regional chapters, discussion panels, conferences, and social events such as sailing regattas are just examples of the many activities that take place within this growing community – and guarantee your continued access to an increasingly international corporate network. The RSM alumni network also brings opportunities for lifelong learning and professional development throughout your career.
IMPROVING YOUR FUTURE CAREER

EMPLOYER BENEFITS
Your company is a direct beneficiary of the RSM EMBA. Expect to bring renewed energy and the latest strategic ideas and cutting-edge knowledge into your role – to be shared with and to inspire others within your organisation. RSM's EMBA connects your company to a worldwide resource of experts, institutes, and other firms. You will enjoy a swift and tangible return on investment via the programme’s applied in-company project.
Return on investment for your companyAbout 40 per cent of our current EMBA participants receive some form of company sponsorship. In return for financial sponsorship, participants usually agree to stay with their companies for a specified period of time. Most sponsored participants sign loyalty agreements lasting between one and four years after completion of the programme. Our research shows that most companies feel they have received a full return on their investment a mere six months after their employee commences the programme, thanks to their candidate’s improved performance and expanded networks.
Supporting high potentials There are many ways a company can sponsor its high-potential employees. The most obvious is through the financing of tuition fees and expenses, which are both tax deductible. Companies also lend support by providing participants with scope to apply new ideas within. While our schedule is designed to minimise time away from the office, an important resource a company can offer an EMBA participant is time. For support in requesting company sponsorship go to: www.rsm.nl/embabusinesscase
“As a medical doctor, joining the EMBA programme is a big challenge and a wonderful experience at the same time. The learning curve is steep due to the way the
programme is taught, mingling key fundamental business knowledge with practical examples and very interactive lessons in class. Also the diversity of the professional and cultural backgrounds of the (inter)national students is an enriching experience. The obtained knowledge applies for commercial purposes and non-profit organisations alike, and is therefore essential for the challenges that the medical field is confronted with. For me, the EMBA is a life-shifting event that has given me a different perspective in many ways.”
Alain Kummer, DutchExecutive MBA'16Medical specialist, St. Antonius Hospital
“The Executive MBA at RSM is an enriching and challenging experience with sustainability at its core. Through the programme and study tours, my
perspectives and impact have widened. The personal learning elements have created the cornerstones of my ‘toolbox’ – a set of skills, business knowledge, engaging network and
responsible way of thinking that I now apply directly in practice. It creates value in my work as well as in preparing for the future growth and
development of my company. The added value of the EMBA is in gaining the ability and mindset to think and act as a leader. My fellow students and I together are being refined into the leaders that we will become.”
Morgan de Koning – Ward, Canadian Executive MBA‘16
Owner, Maison Morgan-Zara

RETURN ON INVESTMENT

“The Executive MBA programme at RSM is a multi-dimensional journey, which will shift one’s understanding on business, people and organisations. The programme
enables accelerated personal and professional growth by employing a comprehensive curriculum of activities focused on business content knowledge, professional networking and self-development. Its varied learning methods, which include classwork, individual and team assignments and international study trips, provide an excellent opportunity to gain understanding of the main challenges faced by contemporary managers. Also, the international mix of students and faculty exposes participants directly to the globalised environment in which business is conducted nowadays. All in all, I find the programme of exceptional value to anyone who wants to be among the business leaders of tomorrow.”
Kaloyan Marinov, BulgarianExecutive MBA’17Business manager, ING Bank N.V.
“Participating in the Executive MBA at RSM provides several returns. The knowledge you gain in all domains of business is highly valuable for
making you a well-rounded person. And courses on HR, organisational behaviour and leadership give you insights into the human side of business and most importantly into yourself. You get to know yourself better, what drives you, and why you do the things you
do. But the most important benefit the EMBA programme provides you with is getting exposed to your fellow classmates. They are from different educational backgrounds and cultures allowing you to learn from the different viewpoints they provide, which makes you grow as a person.”
Ivo van den Berg, DutchExecutive MBA'17
Teamleader business intelligence, DSW Zorgverzekeraar
“Ever since I joined the EMBA at RSM, my life has really changed. I got a great job at Alibaba and I made a lot of friends from the study. The
experience is far above my expectations. The programme has helped me gain invaluable knowledge in various business and leadership areas. I have learned how important
time management during the EMBA is, because of our busy schedules and deadlines. My classmates and I have created a large network of professionals who help each other identify new business opportunities, which is unique. For me this study is the best investment I have ever made so far and I will definitely recommend it to everyone.”
Celine Xu, DutchExecutive MBA'17
business development manager, Alibaba Group
“The business knowledge and toolkit I have obtained because of the EMBA are important to me, but the
people I have met and the insight into the world I have received are the most important to me. RSM's Executive MBA has far exceeded my expectations; it has opened my eyes to the things which seemed invisible before and has enabled me to experience many new things. The programme has provided me with new career perspectives and inspired me to be a better leader of today and tomorrow.”
Jevgenia Miskins, EstonianExecutive MBA’17HR manager, Eastman Chemical
“At RSM, we develop business leaders with international careers who carry their innovative mindset into a sustainable future for all thanks to our highly ranked education programmes, which are based on the latest academic research. Our world-class faculty members, active alumni network and corporate partners ensure that our education is based on a source of impactful knowledge and skills that address specific managerial challenges. As dean of RSM, I'm committed to executing this strategy by using the principles of servant leadership, rallying support throughout the school, and inspiring and motivating people.”
Steef van de Velde, dean, professor of operations management and technology, RSM
“I build on the work that’s already been done in the core strategy course where they teach a lot of techniques and the very core of strategy. What I try to do with my course is built on that foundation, and help people think strategically as a way of life; to think about strategy at a personal level, to think about the strategy of countries, and to think about the strategy of companies.”
Nick Binedell, visiting professor of strategic leadership, University of Pretoria’s Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS)
“In an increasingly interconnected world, variety and diversity are growing exponentially and so are differences in views and interests. Leadership in this new era focuses less on function and process, and more on inspiring people to bring the best of their diversity together and to create valuable results. At RSM, we focus on these inspirational and motivational skills so you learn how to effectively lead and co-lead others, and experience being comfortable with being uncomfortable in challenging situations. Your impact will be a transformative leap in the way business is done.”
Eric Waarts, dean of degree programmes, professor of marketing, RSM
ORGANISATIONAL LEADERSHIP

LEADERSHIP AT RSM
“Studying marketing and brand strategy has never been so important or exciting. First, the recent financial crisis has laid bare the short-termism of aligning performance indicators and managerial incentives along purely financial lines. Marketing should thus champion a renewed focus within companies on creating satisfied customers. Second, the field of marketing is currently in flux. A number of technological, social and economic trends are contributing to render old paradigms obsolete. I love debating with our EMBA students about the future of brand management.”
Stefano Puntoni, professor of marketing, RSM
RSM Discovery,our online research platform.

15
“Sustainability goes beyond a purely economic understanding of business, and instead explores how businesses can create value in a social, ecological and economical way. In a world that faces numerous grand challenges such as climate change and social inequality, it is exciting and inspiring to conceive of businesses as part of the solution to these challenges. Whether it is through a social enterprise or by being an industry leader, companies can (and should) be a force for positive change. I love the – at times heated – discussions on sustainability I have with EMBA students. In my sustainability course, I try to push students to consider their own values as well as the values of the companies they are or will be working for, and to challenge them to take a stand. The EMBAs’ work experience and their diverse backgrounds add significantly to the debate, making the class insightful and fun for both the students and myself.”
Mirjam Werner, assistant professor in business-society management, RSM
