MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C.- Some

of the books on the Commandants reading list are fictional

accounts, some summon true tales and histories of battles

past, and others read as textbooks, teaching of leadership,

doctrine of war and the culture and philosophy of the war

fighter. They differ in theme and length, but all the books in

the list hold important lessons for every Marine.

The Commandants reading list is a staple in the Marine

Corps since 1988 and its format and some of its content

    changed in January.

Books on the list were listed by rank in years past. Now,

in addition to ranks, books are listed by categories such as

leadership, aviation, counterinsurgency, and culture studies,

along with a section called the Commandants Choice, an

all-hands category. Maj. Marc R. Daigler, the executive of-

ficer of Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps

Installations East, said the change allows Marines to learn

about issues and concerns relevant to the Marine Corps

    current operational environment.

The reading program is important because it allows Ma-

rines to grow and develop their knowledge regarding mat-

ters of warfare and culture, said Daigler. We owe it to

ourselves, to the Marines we lead and to our nation to be

knowledgeable about the world in which we have to oper-

ate. We also owe it to ourselves to learn as much as possible

about those who came before us in history - we can learn

    from their successes and mistakes.

Books on the list offer more than doctrine, they can also

be entertaining as well as insightful.

Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein is an excellent

and entertaining story, which also makes some very salient

points about service to ones country and ones society, said

Daigler, adding it is his favorite book on the reading list.

It is also a good story of the protagonists professional

development from a recruit, to a junior soldier, to an NCO,

and eventually to an officer. The books author served in the

Navy for a few years, and one can tell he knows how the

    military works.

Books like Starship Troopers do not look at the past

when they offer Marines tales of combat, but instead to the

future, where characters must battle arachnid creatures on

faraway planets while wearing powered armor.

One book on the list, recommended for privates through

corporals, offers guidance to the answer of an age-old Ma-

rine Corps question, What would Chesty Puller do? The

biography of Lieutenant General Lewis Burwell Chesty

Puller, Marine! Life of Chesty Puller, shows Marines as-

pects of Pullers life, important decisions he made and how

his service left a permanent positive mark in the Corps

    past, present and future.

I gained something from each and every book I read

from the list, said Daigler. By reading and learning about

the experiences of others, it helps me to gain knowledge

I may not be able to get through my own personal expe-

rience. Reading the books enhances a Marines knowledge

and understanding of our profession and of our world. By

expanding our knowledge, we put more tools in our mental

toolbox with which to handle the situations we may face in

the future. We also come to a better understanding of our-

selves and our role in world events.

The books on the list have much to offer Marines wheth-

er they look into the past or the future, or give explanations

into the language and tempo of todays Marine Corps.

    dants Reading List visit http:www.guides.grc.usmcu.edu/

    Lance Cpl. Jackeline Perez Rivera

    Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune

Changes to reading list offer new options

Since the tablet boom in 2009, the concept of being

able to have a hand-held computer that could perform all

of the tasks of a laptop, has been an ever evolving and

    improving endeavor.

Following along with the new technology trend, the

on-base library located on Marine Corps Air Station New

River, received funding to begin a new program to allow

for Marines aboard the air station to check out e-readers

loaded with all of the books on the Commandants read-

    ing list.

Marine Corps Air Station New River Station Library

began circulating Nook Color e-reader devices in Janu-

ary of 2012, said Linda Bryan, library director. We have

pretty much any book our readers have requested.

This includes 50 Shades of Grey for those who are

reading and immediately think of the series.

The procedures for a Marine to check out one of the

Nook devices is as easy as bringing a military ID and re-

ceiving a library card. The Marine or family member has

21 days to enjoy the tablet before returning it to the library.

The library on the air station is the first in the Marine

Corps to have the e-readers available for check out, and as

the program expands and continues to do well, other bases

across the department of defense want to get in on the e-

    reader action.

We received calls all across the Department of De-

fense, including Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and

Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, said Bryan.

The person who checks out an e-reader is not allowed

to alter or download any new software to the tablets in

order to keep the gadgets from becoming vulnerable to

    malicious malware.

Marines who lose or damage the equipment signed out

to them will have to replace it and at over 300 dollars its

not cheap to replace the e-readers, so Marines are encour-

aged to take great care when handing them, said library

    technician Lori Bradford.

The e-readers also offer a large collection of childrens

stories for parents and their children to expand interest in

    reading.

Bryan said they only expect for the program to grow as

the word spreads and popularity of the e-readers contin-

    ues to increase.

We are a small library so we need to say current, said

Bryan. Since we have experience with the program, I can

only see us getting more and more equipment and growing

to offer more to everyone on base.

    Using trigger locks

    or placing a chain lock

    through the action can ren-

der the gun useless and also

    help deter thieves.

    As for mass shootings

    at schools and other public

    locations, security guards at

    every school can save lives

by ending a spree on their

    own terms without waiting

for killer to end it, accord-

    ing to LaPierre.

    The only thing that

stops a bad guy with a gun

is a good guy with a gun,

    said LaPierre.

    One example is the San

    Antonio Theater shooting

    days after the Sandy Hook

    shooting, where an off-du-

    ty police officer working as

    security shot and stopped

    the shooter before anyone

    was killed, according to

    media.

    Some school districts,

    including Harrold Indepen-

    dent School District in Tex-

    as, allow teachers to bring

    guns to the classroom, ac-

    cording to HISD Superin-

    tendant David Thweatt.

    With proper care of re-

    sponsible gun owners and

    a responsible government

    that guards our childrens

    schools and other places a

    spree killer might erupt, we

can see a less bloody coun-
