SENIOR PRIZEGIVING
Yesterday Thursday 2 November, we held our Senior Academic Prizegiving in
the D C Price Auditorium. The evening was very enjoyable and a proud occasion
for us to celebrate the academic successes of our Senior Students. Thank you
to our guest speaker, Tony Renshaw, who was our Year 9 Dean and has retired
after 28 years of service to RLHS. Tony was also HOH Tikitapu, an avid
supporter of Education Outside the Classroom Programmes and was our main
announcer at all Lakes High sporting events. Also, a big thank you to the Mayor,
Steve Chadwick for supporting and attending our prizegiving. We also thank our
special guest, Jackie Woodland, Ngati Whakaue Endownment Trust Education
Advisor who attends and supports our prizegiving every year. A massive thank
you to all staff who organized this event and worked so hard to make it a
success. I am delighted and honoured to announce and congratulate our 2017
Top Scholars and all of our prize winners:

DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S HILLARY AWARD
Over the past weekend, Melissa Weinberg, Megan
McLeod, Lily Gordon, Nic Battersby, Sam Pinckney
and Clay Fookes went out to the Lower Kaimais to
complete their Bronze Qualifying Journey. The
conditions were very challenging and the students
coped extremely well despite the steep slippery
terrain and pouring rain. They completed all the
assessments easily in their navigation, team work
and bush craft skills, camping remotely with no huts
or facilities. A really huge thank you to Mr. Weinberg
and Mr. Riddell for coming along for the weekend
and supporting Gerry Purcell and the students in
their tramp. We couldn't
have done it without you!
Congratulations to
the students
involved, well done
to all of you!

MOUNTAIN BIKING NEWS BY
Dylan Walton
Whaka 100 Race Report by Dylan Walton
After a narrow 2nd place (by only 10 minutes!) in last years Whaka 100 teams race, some of my riding mates and myself wanted that top step of the podium this year! Our team assessed our skill areas once the course map was released and we decided which sections each team member would ride. Our first rider, from JPC had a great start and at the end of his stage, we had a comfortable lead over the other 7 teams. I took the second stage and maintained our strong position throughout the challenging hill climbs and technical descents. After an unforgettable week away at the
Hillary Outdoors course, I was physically drained and certainly felt the steeper climbs in the race. Our 3rd and 4th team members, from Auckland also put in solid efforts. We were proud to finish in 1st place, 1 hour and 4 minutes ahead of the second placed team! Caitlin Dalziel also competed in the Whaka 25, which is a 25km race over steep and technical terrain. Caitlin finished 1st in junior girls and 1st overall female.
2W Race Report by Dylan Walton
Another weekend, another race. Saturday 28th October was the first round of the 2017-2018 Giant 2W Gravity Enduro here in Rotorua. Enduro racing is a lot of fun, as you have to complete either 4 stages in 4 hours, or 6 stages in 6 hours, and return to the start/finish line within the time limits, or be given a penalty. My first 2 stages went well, despite the rain and mud. On my 3rd stage, I called out to pass a rider, just as he fell off. I jumped off my bike, and pulled his bike off the track and off him. The next rider down went and alerted the marshal (one of the Lakes High team who were assisting that day). The medics were called for and I stayed with the badly injured rider
until he was taken away on a stretcher. This delay meant I had to have an averaged time for this stage, but seeing
SPORTS AT RLHS
From our Coaches & Managers
as I had won all the other stages in my age category, I was awarded the overall win for my age, along with getting second place overall in the four stage. I can’t wait for the next round in December. Caitlin Dalziel has been maintaining her winning form after the Whaka 25 and competed in the 6 stage, unshuttled Gravity 2W Enduro event. Caitlin finished 1st in the junior girls category and 6th overall female.
TERM 4
To All Seniors –
Best of luck for your NCEA Exams over the next few
weeks!!! Study hard!!

Last week the Trade Academy
Students with Teacher Martin
Godfrey and Careers Staff enjoyed
an end of year visit to Huka Prawn
Park to view this popular Tourism
Industry and have a spot of Prawn
Fishing!!! The prawns were not
easy to catch and took a bit of skill!
However, careers staff were happy
with their catch! Students had
mixed luck but some did catch and
cook their prawns.

RED STAG TIMBER – WAIPA MILL - ROTORUA
THINKING ABOUT LEAVING SCHOOL?
WE HAVE TRAINEE ROLES NOW AVAILABLE! Located 5 minutes south of Rotorua CBD, Red Stag Timber is an
industry leader when it comes to producing quality timber products. The Company operates New Zealand’s largest
sawmill, and is a well-established and successful business. We have invested heavily over the past 10yrs, with a
new modern Sawmill recently commissioned, and further expansion of our Secondary Processing operations
underway. We are seeking keen school leavers who are eager to learn more about the timber industry and progress
through a timber industry qualification. Our training policy includes a 2 year bond from the completion of the
qualification, so a long-term commitment is sought to match these opportunities.
2018 Red Stag Cadets - The Red Stag Cadet programme involves 12 months of rotational duties to learn broader
aspects of timber processing. This is followed by an agreed training pathway to achieve a L4 Timber Industry
qualification. Work duties during the rotation will include timber handling, recording, wrapping, strapping and the
safe operation of machinery at various work stations. Commencing in January 2018, hours of work are Monday to
Thursday 5.00am – 3.40pm with occasional overtime on a Friday if required.
Timber Machinist & Remanufacturing Apprentices. The Timber Machinist and Remanufacturing apprenticeship
pathways lead to a Level 4 industry trade qualification over 3 years in either Timber Machining or Finger Jointing.
This option would suit those who are mechanically minded, with a particular interest in wood manufacturing. Our
apprentices will also work on various shifts including Afternoon Shift and Weekend Shift. Flexibility with work
days/hours will therefore be required. We are looking to start our new Trainees as soon as possible, with interviews
held in November.
Summer R&D Assistant (Fixed Term) We also have a fixed term dayshift role available over summer working with
our Research & Development team. Duties will involve handling and testing timber, basic reporting and keeping
data records. This role will be starting early December and run through to end January, working Monday to Friday
8hrs/day. Our preferred candidates for the above opportunities will have achieved a minimum L2 NCEA pass
including Maths and English and a related Technical subject. They will also have a reliable attendance record,
excellent communication skills and be physically fit to meet the demands of the role. Confident computer skills
would be an advantage. Full pre-employment medical examination and drug screening applies.
Application forms are available here: http://www.redstagtimber.co.nz/people/careers/
Applications including a brief CV, NCEA record of learning and most recent school attendance record should be
received by 4.00pm Friday 10th November 2017 via email to Maureen Smith, HR/HS Advisor

TERTIARY LOANS AND ALLOWANCES
Sign up for information - registration page Last year we launched our "Sign up for info" form on the StudyLink website. We wanted to make it easy for high-school students to register for regular updates from us on things like when to apply and what documents to send us. It was a great success with nearly 2,000 students registering. This year's form is now up and running. There's a link on the StudyLink homepage and it takes seconds to complete.
We would really appreciate your support again this year in encouraging your Year 13 students
to register. Sign up for information
Students should also check out StudyLink's website to think about what it will cost to
live and study. The tools and calculators will help them get a picture of the financial choices they
will face and how they will manage as they move into tertiary study
