She and her husband, Merlyn shared a married life for 56 years. Together they raised four children, making the Valan farm in rural Moorhead their home base. Their hearts were as wide as their door, welcoming all who loved to visit. Her ability to stand on her head well into her 70’s with her grandkids set her in a league of her own!

Her true calling was to her family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They loved her and she dearly loved them. She prayed for them and cheered them on. She always forgave them and accepted them for who they were. Although Alzheimer’s disease gradually took her mind, the family knows they remained in her heart. Their memories of her many kindnesses sustained them through her years of illness.

Shirlee leaves behind her children, Kitty (Tom) Muench, Buena Vista, CO; Reverend Matthew (Kathy) Valan, rural Moorhead, MN; Cordee Tungseth, Shakopee, MN; 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Norma Davis, Ottertail Lake, MN.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Merlyn; daughter, Elizabeth Anne; granddaughter, Katie Anne Valan; son-in-law, Steve Tungseth; and sister, Dee Henderson.

The family extends heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff at Immanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota for their loving care of Shirlee during her last years.

Cards may be sent to the Valans 4994 110th Avenue South, Moorhead, MN 56560. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Hoff Lutheran Church or as people wish.
