It is to be presented on Saturday, 21st January. Think I will have to buy a bigger Akubra hat!!”

David Groves apologized that while he was away Katie Shiels our Exchange Student who had been in France, arrived home on Sunday without any fanfare. He will arrange to have her report on her exchange at a suitable time.

**** **** **** ****

David Groves then shared some time of his recent trip to Europe and his visit to two of ex Exchange Students, first to Maxime Servias in Belgium who took him to France. While in Belgium David and Alison visited Nathan parent’s who don’t live very far from Maxime.

They then ventured into Hungary and had a wonderful time becoming reacquainted with Robi Scholl. Robi showed how cold it was by holding a piece of frozen water in his hands.

Thanks Dave for updating us on two of our exchange students.

**** **** **** **** (Editor:) The picture on the left is of Ken Evans, with Chris Johnston before the meeting. Ken through his involvement with D.I.K. often sends computer “bits and pieces” to Chris at Earnshaw College where he and his team operate Computers 4Learning.

Fraser McGregor introduced our Guest speaker Chris Johnson: “Chris was born in the occasionally sunny Tasmania. He

is married with four children, 9 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild, and currently lives at Taigum, one of the northern suburbs of Brisbane.

Chris left school having completed year 12, he spent 12 months in civilian employment, before enlisting in the Army in the Corps of Royal Australian Infantry.

He served in most states, served overseas on active service, and after 24½ years was medically discharged in 2001.

After discharge, because he was interested in IT, he completed Certificate 3 and partially completed Certificate 4. In about 2003, he joined Computers 4Kids as a volunteer. After a few years Chris took over the leadership from Mr Harry Peek, and became the Chairman, and leading technician.

In 2013 a review of their operations was undertaken and, amongst other things, the new working name of Computers4Learning was adopted to better reflect the broader range of eligible recipients.

C4L, formerly C4K, grew out of Rotary’s DIK program. Chris is the general manager. To tell us more about this organisation, please welcome Chris Johnston.” Chris began, “Computers 4 Learning, previously known as Computers 4 Kids, was set-up in 1999, as a non-profit organisation under the auspices of Rotary’s Donations In Kind (DIK) Project.

It’s mission was to supply refurbished computers to disadvantaged children. It has since broadened the criteria to include persons of all ages who are disadvantaged by not having access to a computer, hence the adoption of the new, all-encompassing working name Computers 4 Learning.

Computers 4 Learning is a Licensed Microsoft Registered Computer Refurbisher and can therefore legally install Microsoft licensed products on the computers.

The Computers and Laptops come with Windows 7 and Office 10 installed and are for distribution locally as well as overseas through charity organizations such as Rotary, St Vincent’s de Paul and the Rotary Organization Donations In Kind.

About 500 computers are being refurbished and distributed annually by our team of volunteers. Please remember us when it is time to upgrade your computers and donate them to a worthy cause Computers 4 Learning.

Chris went on to assure everyone of their Free data erasure service comes with a Blancco100% guarantee for computer, one of the world’s leading companies who handle this service.

The quote of the night came when a slide on his Power point presentation displayed this: “None of our volunteers are paid, not because they are worthless but because they are priceless.”

Chairman Fraser MacGregor thanked Chris for his presentation and presented him with our usual Certificate of Appreciation. Many questions were asked and well answered about the programme.

President Mike also added his thanks and appreciation and closed the meeting with the singing of the National Anthem at 8.10 p.m.

Two weeks into the second half of the Rotary year and we are already active in the Community. Last weekend and this one coming sees the Jolly Old Fellow departing his position on the rooftops for another Christmas season. Thank you to all those involved in taking Santa down - please remember to do this activity safely.

The end of the month sees one of our biggest annual projects - Australia Day Breakfast. All hands on deck required as we cook and serve close to 5000 sausages in one morning. Set up is the day prior.

As a thank you to members and partners for their efforts over the last 6 months, there will be a fellowship evening in lieu of the regular Club meeting on Wednesday 25th. This will take place in the tent once set up. All members and partners are welcome. Bring drinks and a chair along. A meal will be available, as per our regular meetings. Dave Warren will give a few more details, but numbers will be essential for catering.

The paperwork has now been submitted, and it is hoped that soon we will be able to officially welcome as members our friends from Honiara Rotary Club. We have also had a few other enquiries from our website so we shall see what develops from there.

I can see that these last six months will fly past very quickly.

Yours in Rotary Michael
