Rotary Leadership Institute, District 5060
North District Leadership Team
Kathy Butler, RLI Trainer
Kathy joined the RLI Training Team in 2010.
She has been a member of the Rotary Club of Kelowna since 1994
and has provided leadership as the club president (2003-04) and as
a director on the Rotary Club of Kelowna Foundation.
She is presently the GSE District 5060 Chair and has served as the
Team Leader for the district’s GSE Team to Australia in 2009. She
also serves as a Board member for Rotaplast Canada.
Kathy has been recognized for her leadership with a Rotary
Vocational Service Award.
Kathy is currently the Director of Advancement, Okanagan College; Executive Director,
Okanagan College Foundation (9 years); Past Executive Director, Kelowna General Hospital
Foundation (17 years); and Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) since 1993.
Catherine Comben, RLI Trainer
Catherine received her RLI Faculty Training in early 2010 and
immediately joined the RLI Training Team
She joined the Rotary Club of Kelowna in 1997. She has served as
a club director since 2004 and has provided leadership as the club
president in 2009-10. She is currently the president of the Pleasantvale
Homes Society, a project of the Rotary Club of Kelowna since 1955.
Catherine is very active as an advocate, volunteer and leader in many
community organizations and beyond her community. She has been
awarded numerous awards for her civic and voluntary services and
leadership. She has attained a level of PHF+4 and is also a member of the Bequest Society of the
Rotary Foundation.
Following her early retirement from BCTel, (Telus) after more than 26 years, she has now
pursued a new career in financial services, achieving her Mutual Funds license in 1999 and her
Level 2 Life Insurance license in 2001. She is now a Branch Manager for Investia, part of the
Industrial Alliance Group of Companies, and is also the President of CVC Financial Services
Ltd.
Bruce Falkins, RLI Trainer
Bruce was one of the originally trained RLI facilitators in District
5060 back in 2008. Since then, he has facilitated in all of RLI sessions
Held north of the border.
He has been a member of the Rotary Club of Kelowna Sunrise since
1998 where he has provided leadership as a director on the executive
for many years, and as the club’s Centennial President in 2004-05.
Bruce assumed the position of Assistant District Governor in January
2010 for Area 4 in District 5060, a position he held until June, 2012.
He also serves as a Visioning Facilitator within the district. During the fall of 2012, Bruce was
selected as the District Governor Nominee for 2014-15.
Bruce is a Paul Harris Fellow +8, and a member of the Paul Harris Society and the Bequest
Society.
Bruce received the Rotary Club of Kelowna Sunrise Rotarian of the Year Award in 2000-01, the
Dale Frandsen Award in 2007-08, and the Rotary Foundation District Service Award in 2009.
Since 1997, Bruce has owned and operated his own Promotional Advertising business in
Kelowna.
Jane Fletcher, RLI Trainer
Jane participated in the RLI program in February of 2009 and one year
later in February of 2010 she attained her RLI Trainer’s Certificate.
Jane is a member of the Rotary Club of Kelowna Sunrise, having joined
the club in 2005. Since that time, she has provided club leadership as a
director (2006-11), as the club’s Webmaster/Club Communication
Committee chair (2009-11), as a Speakers/Classification Sub-committee
chair (2006-08), as the club’s bulletin editor (2006-12), and on various
projects and fundraisers committees, including the club’s famed auction.
She was awarded by the Rotary Club of Kelowna Sunrise Rotarian of the
Year Award in 2008 and is a Paul Harris Fellow.
Jane continues to volunteer and provide leadership to other non-profit Okanagan organizations. She was
awarded with Kelowna’s Woman of the Year in 2007.
Jane enjoyed her career with BC Tel/TELUS for 25 years, Capri Insurance for 1.5 years,
Prospera Credit Union for 1.5 years and with the CNIB for 3 years. She has been at UBC's
Okanagan campus in the Faculty of Management since June 2010.
Tony French, RLI Co-Coordinator and Trainer
Tony has been part of the RLI faculty since RLI was introduced to District
5060 in 2008. He has served as registrar, venue and operations manager,
trainer, and has arranged two faculty training courses. Currently, he is
serving as the RLI Co-coordinator with Ed Kolybaba, primarily focused
on coordinating RLI programs in Areas 4 and 5.
Tony has had broad experience as a Rotarian since 1995; presently a
member of the Rotary Club of Kelowna. His Rotary experience includes
club director in all avenues of service, club Secretary, President of
the Rotary Club of Kelowna (2008-09), and project leader for Matching
Grant projects in Belize and Ethiopia.
Beyond his club, Tony led a successful polio fundraising campaign with the clubs in the Central
Okanagan serving as the Coordinator of the Polio Fundraising Campaign from 2002-06. He also
served as the Area 4 Rotary Foundation Coordinator (2005-08) and Assistant Governor for Area
4 (2008-10).
Tony has been awarded the Four Avenues of Service Citation (2000), a Rotary Foundation
District Service Award (2005), and a RI Significant Achievement Award (2011). Tony is a
Rotary Foundation supporter as a PHF+4 donor, Benefactor and BEQ+2.
Tony is a retired Chemical Engineer and senior executive in the Canadian forest industry.
Sherry Gilroy, RLI Trainer
Sherry received her RLI training in March, 2011 and her training as a
RLI Trainer in the spring of 2012.
She has been a member of Shuswap Rotary in Salmon Arm since 2009
and a member of the Tri-club Public Relations Committee. She assumed
the role of President for her club for the 2012-13 Rotary year.
Sherry is fairly new to the Shuswap Area arriving in 2008 after retiring
from Education in 2003. In her “former life,” she spent her spare time
working with Guiding and Scouting, both as a leader and a trainer.
While working in the School System, and following her retirement, Sherry was a business
partner and trainer in a First Aid and Supply company. She received many high honors and
awards from Scouting and Guiding but really enjoyed her Wilderness First Aid Training courses
where she loved bringing her outdoor experiences into the first aid aspect.
Derek Hall, RLI Trainer
Derek Hall was born, raised and educated in British Columbia. His
father was an RCMP officer, so the family endured frequent transfers
to numerous towns and cities around the province.
Following his graduation and a brief stint in the army, he began what
would become a 30 year career in finance and banking that saw him
posted to numerous locations around BC as well as a five year posting
to South East Asia (Singapore, Malaysia & Hong Kong). While in
Malaysia, he was General Manager of a joint venture finance company
with branch offices in eleven Malaysian States and two offices in the
Sultanate of Brunei. The last 10 years of Derek's banking career were
as Manager of the Vernon BC Main Branch.
After taking early retirement from the Bank, Derek joined the local Hospital Foundation as
Executive Director where he served for nine years until retiring again, at age 58 in 2006.
Derek has served as a City Councilor and has held directorships on numerous community
organizations. In his retirement, he is Chair of the Employment Insurance Board of Referees, a
member of the local Property Assessment Review Panel and a lay member of the College of
Chiropractors of BC.
Derek has been a Rotarian since 1990 (Vernon Club). He is a Paul Harris Fellow, two times Past
President and was District Secretary in 1998-99. In 2011, he lead the GSE Team to Bangladesh
and was appointed Assistant Governor for Area 3 in the Spring of 2011. He has a keen interest
in philanthropy and international service. Derek accepted responsibilities as an RLI trainer
following a trainer’s workshop during the spring of 2012.
Derek is married to Donna and has one Daughter Jessica who has just completed her Masters
Degree in War Studies through the Royal Military College. Derek and Donna enjoy travel,
gardening, history and community service.
Gavin Hall, RLI Trainer
After having graduated from the D5060 RLI program offered in October
and November of 2009, Gavin then graduated from the Trainer’s program
held in February of 2010.
Gavin is a member of the Rotary Club of Armstrong (founded 1979).
He has been a member with club since 1995 and has served as president
of his club twice, and as club secretary for two Rotary years. Gavin will
be serving as the Director of Membership for his club in 2012-13.
Gavin taught English with the Calgary Public School Board from
1971-1978 and then went into residential home building and contractual
construction work. He retired from construction in 2006.
Garry Hollingshead, RLI Trainer
Garry is one of the original Rotarians from District 5060 to be trained as
a RLI instructor. Since that time, he has provided leadership and worked
as a trainer in all of the programs offered in the district since 2008.
Garry has been a Rotarian since 1988 with three different clubs
(Yellowknife, NT; Prince George-Nechako, BC; and Summerland, BC.)
Since becoming a member of the Summerland club, Garry has served as
secretary, director and president (2002-03). He has served the district for
three years as Assistant Governor for Area 5 (2005-08), chair of the
World Community Service Committee and as the District Governor’s Special Representative for
the formation of the Rotary Club of West Kelowna Daybreak. In June of 2010, Garry
participated in a Rotaplast program in Venezuela.
Garry was awarded the Rotary Foundation District Service Award in 2006. Garry is a multiple
Paul Harris Fellow, Bequest Society member and Major Donor.
Garry holds a PhD in civil engineering and prior to retirement worked with the Royal Canadian
Engineers (4 years), Royal Military College (7 years) and as an engineering consultant
throughout western and northern Canada.
Sue Harvey, RLI Trainer
Sue graduated from the RLI program in February of 2009 and then
followed up with additional training in 2010 to enable her to qualify
as a RLI trainer.
Sue enjoyed a lengthy and rewarding career as an educator prior to
becoming a Rotarian and member of the Penticton-Okanagan Rotary
Club in 2004. Since joining the club, Sue has served the club as youth
exchange counselor, Foundation director, president and secretary. Sue
is also the Group Study Exchange coordinator for Area 5. She recently
held a membership with the Planning Committee for the 2012 District
5060 Conference.
Ron Hooper, RLI Trainer and Venue Facility Manager
Ron participated in the RLI program in October 2011 and attained his
RLI Trainer’s Certificate in March of 2012. He has become a strong
advocate for the RLI program and its importance in building the capacity
of Rotarians. Ron continues to serve as Venue Facility Manager for
RLI programs held in Salmon Arm.
Ron is a member of the Rotary Club of Salmon Arm Daybreak, having
joined in 2010. He is currently Club President-Elect and Co-chair of the
Club Service Committee. Ron is a past President of the Rotary Club of
Jasper.
Ron has enjoyed a fulfilling career with Parks Canada, having served as
Superintendent of Jasper, Pacific Rim and Gwaii Haanas National Parks. He is currently
involved in planning alpine ski areas.
Dennis Jacobsen, RLI Trainer and Venue Facility
Manager
Dennis finished his RLI training in the fall of 2009 and RLI Faculty
training in early 2010. He was Registrar for the RLI program when it was
offered in Penticton and presently serves as the Venue Facility Manager
for Area 5.
He joined the Penticton-Okanagan Rotary Club in 2005, primarily
because he was asked by a business associate. He immediately became
involved on the executive and provided publicity and website
development for the club. He was also the president of the club during
the 2009/2010 year.
At the district level, Dennis serves on the District 5060 Website
Committee, is the current ShelterBox ambassador for Area 5 and has helped to organize the Polio
5060 Campaign in October 2010. He is a member of the Paul Harris Society.
His other day job is being the CEO of Windward Software Inc. which creates and sells software
to over 35 countries from Penticton.
Marie Kolenosky, RLI Trainer
Marie shares that she “made one of the best decisions’ in her life in 2004
when she became a Rotarian.” “I simply do not know a better way to
positively impact my community and the world community,” added
Marie.
Over the years as a member of the Rotary Club of Salmon Arm Daybreak,
she has chaired the Community Service and Membership committees, and
the RYLA and Lobster Fest committees. She is currently the chair of her
club’s Membership Committee and she serves as a representative on the
District 5060 Membership Committee. In 2007-08, she had the pleasure
of being her club’s President. She is a PHF+1 donor (2012); and is pretty proud of this.
As a March 2012 graduate of the RLI Trainer’s program, she is looking forward to helping new
and experienced Rotarians learn about our great organization. “Through RLI, we will build
ourselves and others as leaders; and we can positively affect first our own lives and then the lives
of others,” noted Marie.
Marie is a Registered Nurse and Certified Nutritionist by profession. She points out that she is
rather addicted to golf, watching hockey and curling and enjoying fast cars.
Marjolein Lloyd, RLI Trainer and Marketing Manager
Marjolein participated in the district’s RLI program offered in
November of 2008, and then graduated from the RLI Training
program in February of 2010. As of 2012, Marjolein has assumed the
new position of Marketing Manager with the D5060 North RLI Training
Team.
Marjolein has been a member of the Rotary Club of Westbank since
2000. Over the past eleven years, she has been the Rotary Youth
Exchange Chair, Director of the Club Service Committee (2003-04),
Director of Club Service Projects (2008-09), Club President (2009-10),
and Club Administration Chair (2011-12). Marjolein has been a key leader over the past four
years in the planning and funding of a major Rotary Spray Park for West Kelowna at a cost of
over $260,000 which was completed in September 2011.
Marjolein is currently the Regional Ambassador for ShelterBox Canada.
Marjolein is the mother of 2 boys aged 8 and 11, is a piano teacher, and also works for a local
magazine publisher.
Reg Lucas, RLI Trainer
Reg is a member of the Rotary Club of Kamloops Aurora Centennial. In
March of 2012, he joined the D5060 North Rotary Leadership Institute
Training Team.
Reg has been married for 51 years and he and his wife have three grown
children, a daughter and two sons, along with six grandchildren.
Reg worked in the Insurance industry for approximately 35 years. He
and his wife purchased a hardware store in the East Kootenays of British
Columbia in 1977 and operated it until 1987. They returned to Kamloops
in 1987 and Reg went back into the insurance industry as an insurance
broker. In 1989, he started to teach insurance courses at the University of the College of the
Cariboo and continued to do so until he retired in 1999.
Reg’s service career started in Chilliwack in 1969 when he joined the Kinsmen Club. He
continued with Kinsmen until his move to the East Kootenays in 1977. He then joined Rotary in
1978 in Invermere, B.C. While a member of the Rotary club there, he served in several positions
on the Executive, including President.
As a member of the Rotary Club of Kamloops Aurora Centennial, Reg has served as its President
and he has been actively involved with the local Interact and Rotaract clubs. He has also served
as the District Representative for Interact and Rotaract. Reg’s hobbies include woodworking, skiing, hiking and cycling.
Sean McKenna, RLI Trainer
Sean graduated from RLI in the fall of 2011, and then joined the RLI
Training Team in 2012.
He has been a member of the Rotary Club of Kamloops Daybreak since
2001and has provided leadership as the club president (2008-09) and as a
director on the Rotary Club of Kamloops Daybreak Board for the past
eight years. He is currently the club’s webmaster and Director of
Communications.
This is his first opportunity to serve at the District level since retiring
from his business in 2011. Sean is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, a
Benefactor and a member of the Paul Harris Society.
He has travelled and participated in international projects and a Polio Immunization day in India.
Sean is a founding Board Director of Developing World Connections, a facilitator of volunteer
projects around the world.
Sean retired from Operations and Executive Management in the private sector (27yrs) and in
Healthcare (VGH and LGH 7yrs).
Jim Nielson, RLI Trainer
Vern joined the District 5060 RLI Training Team in March of 2012.
He has been very involved at his club level as a director since 2006, the
founder of Rotary Ski to Tee, and the Rotary Air Show. He was president
of the Rotary club of Kelowna in 2010-11 and assumes Assistant
Governor role of Area 4 for 2012-13 year. Additionally, Vern has been
serving as the Chair of the District 5060 Friendship Committee.
During his year as President, the Rotary club of Kelowna won seven
district awards for large clubs and a Significant Achievement Award
from Rotary International.
Personally, he has won numerous awards for his involvement in both business and not for profit
organizations including the “Okanagan Science and Technology Community Leadership Award
2009”, and the Fred Macklin Memorial award “Kelowna’s Man of the Year 2010”.
Vern has been a senior executive and entrepreneur in packaged goods, real estate, high tech and
other industries. His experience spans roles at General Foods to being CEO of multiple
successful ventures.
Jacqueline Nind, RLI Trainer
Jacqueline has been a member of the Rotary Club of Merritt since
December 2009. Since joining the club she has served as Social
Director (2010-11) and will take on the responsibility of President in
2012-13.
Prior to joining the Merritt Club, Jacqueline was charter member of the
Rotary Club of Delta, but shortly after became a member of the Rotary
Club of Richmond Sunset. While with the Richmond Sunset club from
2000-2009, she held several directorships and was president in 2005-
06. She chaired several successful fundraisers over her years with the
Richmond club was involved with the GSE teams.
Jacqueline has two strong beliefs; there is no “I” in “we” and to give back to your community
both locally and internationally is the only way to go.
Jacqueline attained a RLI Facilitator Training Certificate in March of 2012.
She is an avid supporter of the Foundation and is a PHF+2 donor.
Jacqueline’s chosen profession was interior design which she did for well over 20 years. She also
taught interior design through continuing education in the lower mainland for three years. She is
now looking to get back into the workforce in a different field.
Carole Paradis, RLI Program Team Leader and Venue
Facility Manager
Carole has served as a Rotarian since 1992, when she became a member of
the Rotary Club of Kelowna Morningside. While with the club, she served
on all positions of the club’s Executive, except as treasurer. This included
assuming the role of club president in 1996-97.
Carole’s passion for Rotary has extended into the district where she has
provided leadership as the District Chair (2003-05) and District Co-chair
(2005-12) for the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, Events Coordinator for
RYE (2006-11), District Secretary (2008-09), and member of the District
2005 Conference Planning Committee (Kelowna). She has hosted 17 youth exchange students
from 15 different countries and has been the district’s Youth Exchange Representative at two
Rotary International Conventions, Salt Lake City in 2005 and New Orleans in 2011.
Carole is married to Paul and is a PHF+1 donor.
Carole graduated from the Rotary Leadership Institute program in April of 2011 and assumed
responsibility as RLI Program Team Leader for Areas 4 and 5 of D5060, along with RLI Venue
Facility Manager for Area 4 of the District.
Murli Pendharkar, RLI Trainer
Murli received his RLI Faculty training in 2008 and since then has
continued to be active in providing RLI training to Rotarians from
District 5060.
Murli has been an active member of Rotary Club of Kelowna since
October 1978. He has provided club leadership in the following
positions: Director of the International Service Committee (2007-08),
Chair of the World Community Service Committee, and Chair of the
Rotary Youth Exchange Committee.
Murli has served as the Chair of the D5060 World Community Service Committee and as a
member of the D5060 Youth Exchange Committee. As the Area 4 WCS Chair he was successful
in guiding the implementation of a US$375,000 Area 4 3H Water Sewer Project in Amreli, India.
Murli has been recognized for his commitment to Rotary and for his leadership with the Rotary
Club of Kelowna Rotarian of the Year Award (1986-87), Rotary Club of Kelowna Ray Corner
For Outstanding New Rotarian Award (1997), District Rotarian of the Year Award (2002-03) RI
“Service Above Self” Award
Murli is a supporter of the Rotary Foundation and has attained a multiple PHF level.
Barb Penner, RLI Trainer
Barb attained her certificate as a RLI Faculty member during a RLI
trainer’s program in February of 2010.
She has been a Rotarian since 2004 when she was inducted into the
membership of the Rotary Club of Kelowna Sunrise. She has served
as a director of the club for four years (2006-08, 2009-10 and 2011-12),
and as chair of the World Community Service Chair for 5 years. She
will be assuming the position of President of the Rotary Club of
Kelowna Sunrise for the 2013-14 Rotary Year. She has visited
Rotary projects in Ethiopia and has a keen interest in bringing
Micro Credit to the area of Debra Birhan and Aliyu Amba. Barb has attained a level of PHF+4
and is a member of the Paul Harris Society.
In her work life, Barb works for program and policy development with Community Living BC
where her most recent work has been around increasing employment opportunities for people
with a developmental disability.
Jim Piderman, RLI Trainer
Jim has been a Rotarian since 1995 and a Toastmaster for seven years. He
enjoys mentoring and has expressed that passion many times in Rotary
and Toastmasters, both with individuals as well as by frequent attendance
at newly chartered Rotary and Rotaract clubs. He has shared his
presentation ideas in the past two years with several presentations classes
and clubs at Thompson Rivers University.
While not currently singing with the Kamloops Barbershop Chorus, he
did so for twenty years. This provided him with many opportunities
to develop his leadership and presentation skills.
Jim is currently the District 5060 Coordinator for the Rotary Information Course (RIC) and the
President of his Toastmasters Club. He has worked closely with the District RYLA program,
serving with its committee since 2008 and acting as its Registrar for the past two years.
Jim is a member of the Rotary Club of Kamloops West and a Rotary Leadership Institute
graduate (2011). He participated in the RLI Trainer’s Course in Kamloops in March of 2012.
Jim is looking forward to facilitating learning among the district Rotarians and enhancing his
own knowledge through the RLI program.
Barry Reid, RLI Registrar
Barry completed the Rotary Leadership Institute course in Penticton in
2011 and joined the RLI team in 2012 as the D5060 RLI Registrar.
He is an active member of the Rotary Club of Penticton Okanagan,
joining in 2007 after his daughter was selected to participate in the
Rotary International Student Exchange. Barry has held several club
positions including club President (2011-12).
Barry enjoyed a thirty-four year career in the parks, recreation, and
tourism industry with the cities of Maple Ridge and Penticton. Since
retiring in 2009, he has provided consulting services as a Senior
Associate with PERC (Professional Environmental Recreation Consultants) and as an
independent contractor.
Isabel Reinertson, RLI Trainer
Isabel joined the District 5060 RLI Facilitating Team in March of
2012 after completing the facilitation training.
She has been a member of the Rotary Club of Salmon Arm since
2000, serving as club director for two years, and president twice of the
club. At the district level, she has served as the Assistant Governor
for Area 2. She is a District 5060 facilitator for Club Visioning and is
a PHF+1 donor.
Isabel has served as a volunteer on several national equestrian
organizations, most recently as Chair of Para-Equestrian Canada, from
which she received a special recognition award. She is a Dressage judge and competitor, but
most of Isabel's community volunteerism has been accomplished through her Rotary club.
She is a retired teacher following a 33-year career spanning grades 2 to 12, plus special training
in counseling and librarianship in three British Columbia school districts.
Renee Roberge, RLI Trainer
Renee graduated from the RLI program during the fall of 2011, and
then joined the RLI Facilitating Team in March 2012 following
participation in the Training Program.
She has been a member of the Rotary Club of Salmon Arm Daybreak
since 2002 and since then has held positions as Foundation Chair and
President. She is currently Club’s Secretary.
As an avid supporter of the Foundation and the work that it does
throughout the world, Renee travelled with a team of Rotarians from
District 5060 to India in 2005 to participate in National Immunization
Day in Agra, and is currently the Alumni Chair for the District
Foundation Committee. She received the Rotary Foundation District Service Award in 2006 for
her active service. She is a multiple PHF and Benefactor.
Renee works as a Manager of Community Integrated Health Services for the North Okanagan
(Shuswap/Revelstoke) with the Interior Health Authority.
Arjun Singh, RLI Trainer and Program Team Leader
Arjun joined the Rotary Club of Kamloops in 2000. He is a third
generation Rotarian and has served his club as club Secretary and
Public Relations Director.
Arjun graduated from the Rotary Leadership Institute program during
the fall of 2011 and then followed up with participation in a RLI
Training Workshop which enabled him to then assume the role of a
RLI Trainer in District 5060. Arjun also volunteered to serve as the
Program Team Leader for Areas 1-3 of the district.
Arjun works as a property manager and currently serves on Kamloops
City Council. He has a MA in Professional Communication and a Certificate in Dialogue,
Deliberation, and Public Engagement
Al Strachan, RLI Trainer
Al’s interest in facilitating learning for Rotarians was extended when
he took an interest in serving as a trainer with the Rotary Leadership
Institute. He attained his RLI Training Certificate in 2008 and
provided instruction at all of the Institutes offered by the District 5060
North RLI Trainers.
Al has been a Rotarian since 1989, first with the Rotary Club of Nelson
in District 5080 where he served as club president in 1999-2000.
While in District 5080, Al was the co-chair of the 2002 District
Conference and he provided instruction at the 2004 Pacific NWPETS
training session in Seattle.
Upon joining the Rotary Club of Kelowna in 2005, Al continued providing club leadership by
serving as a director for four years (2006-10) and by chairing the Fundraising Committee (2006-
08) and the Membership Committee (2008-10).
Al has been involved in Area 4 leadership as the Area 4 and 5 Public Relations Representative
on the District 5060 Public Relations Committee. He also continued to serve as a facilitator at
Pacific NWPETS in Seattle in 2011 and 2012.
Al’s leadership and commitment was recognized in 2009 when he was awarded the club’s Hass
Houssain Memorial Service Award for outstanding service, commitment and dedication to
Rotary. Al has achieved a PHF+3 level and benefactor status with the Rotary Foundation.
After a career with the provincial government, Al has established a reputable business as a
Labour Relations Consultant.
Kent Wong, RLI Trainer and Venue Facility Manager
Kent graduated from the Rotary Leadership Institute program during the
fall of 2011 and then received RLI Training in 2012 to enable him to
become part of the Training Team. Kent also accepted the role of
Venue Facility Manager for the RLI programs that will be held in the
future in Kamloops.
He joined the Rotary Club of Kamloops Daybreak in 1997 with the
classification of Photographer and immediately became the Club's
Historian. Becoming a Club Board member and Director assuming the
Foundation Portfolio in 2005, he became Daybreak's 25th president in
2010-11. He has been the Club's Sergeant-at-Arms for a few years and
currently is the Club's weekly bulletin Editor. He is a Paul Harris Fellow +3 donor.
Kent is active in the community as a longtime member of the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce
(since 1985 serving as its Goodwill Ambassador) and member of the Canadian Home Builders
Association-Central Interior Branch (2007). He was chair of the Kamloops Heritage Commission
for nine years and sat on the Board of Directors for two years on the provincial BC Heritage
Trust. He is a past president of the Professional Photographers of Canada, BC Region, and
currently sits on that Board as the Salon Liaison Portfolio Chair.
Kent owns and operates Kent Wong Photography in Kamloops, a successful commercial/portrait
studio. He travels across Canada instructing other professional photographers on sales and
marketing and can be found teaching all aspects of photography in BC to amateurs and fellow
pros alike. He also teaches ballroom dancing and promotes a healthier way to cook and eat
through the use of Saladmaster cookware.
Kent has his B.Sc. in Vertebrate Physiology and Neuropsychology from UVic. and his Master of
Photographic Arts in the Professional Photographers of Canada. He is a Fellow of the
Professional Photographers of Canada, BC Region. He enjoys cooking, music, reading fiction,
tennis, badminton, kayaking, ballroom dancing and being involved with people.
Ed Kolybaba, RLI Co-Coordinator and Trainer
He has been involved with Rotary since 1995, first with the
RC/Weyburn in District 5550 as a director and vice-president, then with
with the RC/Westbank in District 5060 from 2000-2011 and recently
with the RC of Kelowna Sunrise.
While with the Westbank club, Ed served as a director for 7 years (2000-
03) and (2006-10) chairing all of the service committees of the club at
one time or the other, and as the Centennial Club President (2004-05).
He also edited and published the District Award winning club newsletter,
the Westbank Rotary Times (2000-11) and served as the club’s
webmaster (2003-11). Ed assumed responsibility as the planner and primary contact with the
club’s humanitarian projects in India and Ethiopia.
Although his tenure with the RC/Kelowna Sunrise is short, Ed has taken on the responsibility of
club webmaster and as a member of the Foundation and International Service Committees.
At the Area 4 level, Ed has served on the Ambassadorial Scholarship, Rotary Centennial and the
Group Study Exchange Committees and has assisted with Area Rotary Foundation events and
firesides.
Ed has taken on more responsibility at the district level and beyond by serving as a coordinator
and trainer with the RLI program since 2008, as member of the District Grants Sub-Committee,
first as a member (2007-09) and then as the chair (2009-13), and as a District Humanitarian
Competitive Grant Planning Team Member (Ethiopia). Ed served as an instructor Pacific
NWPETS training in Seattle in 2011 and will do so again in 2013. In 2012, Ed provided
leadership as the GSE Team Leader to District 4600 in Brazil.
Ed has received the Rotary Club of Westbank’s Rotarian of the Year Award in 2000-01, 2001-
02, and 2003-04, The Rotary Foundation District Service Award (2010-11) and an Honorary
Merit Award from the RC of Volta Redonda, District 4600 in Brazil (2012). He has attained a
PHF+3, is a TRF benefactor and a member of the Bequest Society.
Ed retired in 1999 from senior education administration in the role of Director of Education, and
a second time in 2010 from part time work as a Faculty Advisor with the Faculty of Education of
the University of British Columbia Okanagan.
