WATER, SANITATION AND HYGIENE

WASH

WELCOMEWelcome to the 4th annual Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) Symposium presented by Rotary Districts 5440, 5450 and 9212! We are delighted that you chose to spend the day with us, and trust that both your participation and contribution will serve to further the cause for safe water and adequate sanitation worldwide. As we endeavor to tackle this global initiative, we have called upon some of the WASH sectors best and brightest to lead us through a discussion of the strategies that will equip us to pursue actionable and sustainable solutions to empower a new generation of advocates.

This year the symposium focuses on a new Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) strategy as developed by the Rotary Vocational Training Team (VTT) from our two districts and District 9212 in East Africa. The strategy emphasizes training youth in WASH skills and providing WASH in schools for real, lasting generational change. The symposium will equip WASH advocates worldwide to develop and expand successful programs.

The new WASH strategy introduces important concepts including clean drinking water sufficient for students and faculty, ecological toilets, a place for menstrual hygiene, hand washing facilities and hygiene education. Schools practicing “holistic” WASH will use water and waste products as fertilizer to grow crops for school use and to generate income. “Model” schools serve as examples of best practices to the wider community and to other schools. Training of primary and secondary school leavers as WASH professionals and technicians and in entrepreneurial skills is a key element of the strategy to increase employment opportunities for youth and to serve communities.

The strategy focuses on children and youth as agents for generational change in knowledge, attitudes and practices through schools, technical training institutions and universities. It brings the latest and best practices for future Rotary initiatives in the WASH sector. It provides an operational framework and a blueprint for action by WASH Advocates worldwide.

Today’s session will be fast-paced, informative and highly interactive. Our collective strategy will take future WASH initiatives to a new level by turning projects into powerful programs and creating vehicles for youth employment. It’s called Holistic WASH: Transforming a Generation.

So fasten your seatbelts and get ready for a wild ride!
