My dear fellow Rotarians:

A famous movie scene from “City Slickers” has the hero explaining the secret of life to a visiting novice. “It’s just one thing,” says the hero. “What one thing?” asks the novice. “That’s for you to figure out,” says the hero.

Rotary’s “one thing” is polio eradication.

Thanks to the ingenuity of a group of Philippine-based Rotarians in 1979, Rotary International accepted the challenge of eliminating polio from the planet by the year 2000. That target date has come and gone, but as the current campaign slogan goes, we are “this close” to success. A disease that once paralyzed and killed up to half a million people per year is “this close” to being eradicated.

Consistent with Rotary’s philosophy of serving as a rallying and focal point to help solve major community issues, we offered funding and other encouragement to the World Health Organization to press for victory. The result was The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, formed in 1988. Under this Initiative, governments and cooperat-ing agencies have come together to fight this debilitating disease.

Of the eight billion dollars invested in this battle to date, one billion has come di-rectly through the Rotary Foundation. Untold numbers of Rotarians have volunteered their time for the twice-a-year immunization exercises which are massive country-wide undertakings. (Rotary has only recently attempted to monetize the contributions of its volunteers: once completed, this will substantially increase the organization’s invest-ment in a polio-free world.)

As a result, effective the latest reports only Chad and Nigeria in Africa, Pakistan, and Afghanistan have had cases of polio this year, with Nigeria in the unfortunate lead thanks to its difficult internal situation.

Normally, Thailand’s ‘National Immunization Days’ (NID) occur in December and January. This year, reportedly dictated by drug supply issues, the dates have been moved forward, with the first of the two days occurring on 28 October, in conjunction with a “Run to End Polio 2012” fun event at Lumpini Park.

After Polio has been eradicated, what will be Rotary’s new “one thing?” I have heard suggestions from fellow District Governors that we should tackle AIDS next. Others have said that we should focus on clean drinking water for all. Rotary International has said that the decision will be made only after the world is officially and finally polio free.

Whatever our great organization decides to concentrate on, you can be certain that it will be a stepping stone to Rotary’s ultimate goal of world understanding, coop-eration, and peace.

Vocational Service Vocational Service is one of Rotary’s Avenues of Service. Vocational Service calls every Rotarian to: • aspire to high ethical standards in

their occupation; • recognize the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and; • contribute their vocational talents to

the problems and needs of society.

Classification When professionals join a Rotary club, they do so as a representative of their classification – their particular business or profession. Rotarians have the dual responsibility of representing their vocation within the club and exemplifying the ideals of Rotary within the workplace.

Vocational Services in Action – Ideas from Around the World Each October, Rotarians are encouraged to focus on Vocational Service, one of the five Avenues of Service. Rotary International collected model vocational service project submissions from district governors. Here are a few examples:

• The Rotary Club of San Diego, California, USA, has held Camp Enterprise since 1976, helping to teach about 80 high school students about free enterprise and the benefits of being an entrepreneur. The students come from all area high schools and have different social, ethnic, and financial backgrounds.

• The Rotary Club of Krasnodar, Russian Federation, developed the My Professional Future Project for orphans ages 14-16, which includes educational seminars on personal motivation, communica-tion, careers and labor, and preparing for the future. Rotarians organize trips to area businesses, and the orphans visit factories for workshops. “This project is a great example of vocational service because Rotarians share their profes-

sional knowledge with local children who have the wrong perception of life and don’t realize their abilities and potential,” says Nadezhda Papp, past governor of District 2220.

• Members of the Rotary Club of Bern, Switzerland, provide a two-week voca-tional internship for economically and socially disadvantaged youth from Gustav-Heinemann Comprehensive School in Essen, Germany. Students intern at lo-cal businesses in Switzerland and learn how to market themselves. The Rotary

Club of Essen-Baldeney nominates the students, and the Bern club provides fi-nancial support. “I am glad to know that I was able to get along with people in a foreign country and that I can be self-dependent,” says former intern Katarina Kanakusen. “I learned so much in the two weeks I was in Switzerland.”

JoB shADoWinG voCATionAl serviCe in ACTion

For the past three years, the Rotary Club of Minneapolis South, Minnesota, USA, has been helping young adults with learning and behavioral disabilities to explore careers that interest them.

The club collaborates with the Minne-apolis South Workforce Center and seven special education high schools on a job-shadowing day twice a year. More than 30 students and young adults ages 18-21 are matched with employees in areas such as nursing, public safety, data entry, and housekeeping.

Sandra Schley, past governor of District 5950, says vocational programs such as

job shadowing are vital, especially given the 70 percent unemployment rate among people with disabilities in the United States.

“This project is one critical way that young adults with disabilities learn that they are expected to work and become independently functioning and contributing members of their community,” says Schley. “Most important, these students begin to see real possibilities for themselves.”

The club provides transportation and food for the participants. Club members also talk about their own career paths before the young adults head to their job-shadow assignments.

“This is a great vocational project be-cause it is a local collaboration between businesses, development agencies, and the school system,” says Ellie Emanuel, club vocational service committee chair. “We’re encouraging these youths to make connections with the community.”

Club members also visit schools to help struggling students improve their grades through tutoring and mentoring.

ดฉนชอ ภรดา อศวสาธตพร เปนลกสาวของนายกมล อศวสาธตพร สมาชกสโมสรโรตารกรงเทพ นบตงแตทคณพอเขารวมสโมสรโรตาร ทานท�าใหดฉนเปนสวนหนงของงานสโมสรดวย ดฉนเคยเขารวมกจกรรมของสโมสรโรตาร ทจดโดย สโมสรโรตารกรงเทพ นบครงไมถวน ดวยความเชอมนในค�าขวญของสโมสรโรตารเปนอยางยงทวา “การเหนแกผอนมากกวาตนเอง”

ในชวงปดเทอมภาคฤดรอนป พ.ศ, 2553 ดฉนและเพอนๆ ไดรวมตวกนเดนทางไปทจงหวดนครสวรรคดวยความชวยเหลอของสโมสร โดยทงหมดนเกดจากการทคณพอของดฉนแนะน�าใหดฉนไดรจกกบคณพรวรนทร พาณชยวรนนท ผชวยผอ�านวยการเขต ซงไดพบกนครงแรกเมอ 2 ปกอน ทจงหวดนครสวรรค โดยเราไดตกลงกนวาจะจดคายภาษาองกฤษส�าหรบเดกๆ เปนเวลา 1 สปดาห

โรงเรยนแรกทพวกเราเดนทางไป คอ โรงเรยนทาสง เมอพวกเราเดนทางไปถงทนน พวกเราไดรบการตอนรบจากนกเรยนประมาณ 120 คน พวกเขาทกทายเราดวยความยนดและรอยยมทอบอนและยนด

สงแรกทพวกเราท�าคอแบงนกเรยนออกเปน 4 กลม แตละกลมจะตองตงชอกลมเชยร พวกเดกๆ มความคดสรางสรรคกนอยางมาก กลมของดฉนใชชอกลมวา Stitch ถงแมวาพวกเขาทงหมดจะตงชอกลมและเชยรไดเปนอยางด แตพวกเราตองตดสนและประกาศกลมทชนะและมอบขนมอรอยๆ เปนรางวล

หลงจากนนพวกเราแนะน�าเกมสทตองใชความสามคคเปนอยางมาก ในขณะทพวกเรา

วนถดมาเราไดเดนทางไปทโรงเรยนอนบาลเพอชวยเหลอเดกดอยโอกาสทมพอมาประกอบอาชพอสระเกบขยะขาย โดยเดกๆมอายตงแต 2-4 ป เดกๆ มความกระตอรอรนกนอยางมาก ท�าใหเราแทบตามกนไมทน ครงนเราไดเตรยมอาหารกลางวนส�าหรบเดกเปนขาวผดไข ไกทอดและไสกรอกทอด เดกๆ ชอบไกทอดมาก ซงพวกเขาไมคอยมโอกาสไดกนอาหารดๆ เทาไหรนก เรามความสขกนมากทไดเหนเดกเพลดเพลนไปกบอาหารกลางวน นอกจากนเรายงแจกไอศกรมเปนการตบทายอาหารทสดวเศษของพวกเขา

กจกรรมการเดนทางครงนนบไดวาเปนสงทดทสดทเราไดมโอกาสสนกสนานไปกบเดกๆ ทกครงทเรากลบไปจงหวดนครสวรรค เดกมกจะมสงใหมๆ มามอบใหเราเสมอ ซงตองมครงตอไปอยางแนนอน

Go district, and every day for one week we would teach the kids English and have fun activities planned for them. Incidentally DG Chairat Prasertlum visited Rotary Club of Tah Ta Go during we were there, we then had the opportunity to present to him what we did and had dinner with him together with all other club members. Since the first trip was a great success, we decided to do it again!

On July 24’12, my friends and I (nine of us in total) took off to Nakorn Sawan with the goal in mind to help teach the kids some English and most importantly, to have fun. This was a reminiscing trip for me because it reminded me of our previous trip.

My name is Phurida Asavasatitporn and I am the daughter of Rotary Club of Bangkok’s Kamol Asavasatitporn. Ever since my father got involved with Rotary, he also made me a part of the club. I have been to numerous events held by Rotary Club of Bangkok and I strongly believe in the Rotary’s motto of “service above self.” During the summer in 2010, I gathered a group of my friends and arranged a trip to Nakorn Sawan through the help of the club. This all began when my father introduced me to Khun Pornwarin Panitwaranun, As-sistant District Governor. I first met her two years ago at Nakorn Sawan where we agreed to arrange an English Camp for kids there for a week. We gathered kids from schools all over the area of Tah Ta

The first school we visited was the school of Tar Soong. When we got there we were welcomed by about 120 kids; they greeted us with warm pleasant smiles. The first thing that we did was dividing the kids into four separate groups. Each group had to come up with a team name and a cheer. The kids were extremely crea-tive; my team name was called ‘Stitch. ’ Although they were all good cheers and names, we declared one team the winner and granted them a prize of delicious good-ies. After that we introduced a game that required a great amount of teamwork, the kids were each given a straw and we lined them up. A rubber band was put onto the straw of the first person of each line; the

kids had to pass the rubber band to the end of the line only using the straw. That wasn’t all, we then played some songs together on the guitar and a game called pass the powder the around. This game involved sitting in a circle and passing a bottle of powder around, when the music stops the person holding the powder gets to put the powder on a friend’s face. All the kids loved that game the most. Lastly, we spoke a little bit of English with the kids, just to teach them a couple of new words, and also left them a collection of English books for their new library.

The next day, we visited a kindergarten for the less fortunate kids that were the

sons and daughters of trash collectors. There were about a hundred 2-4 year olds. The kids were so energetic that we could not keep up with them. We brought over lunch for the kids, it was egg fried rice, fried chicken and sausage. The kids loved the fried chicken; it wasn’t often that these kids get to eat good food. We were happy to see the kids really enjoyed lunch; we ended their wonderful meal with some ice-cream afterwards as well.

This trip overall was one of the best so far, we had so much fun with the kids. Every time we go back to Nakorn Sawan the kids always have something new to offer us. There will definitely be a next time!

The most valuable resource available to Rotary International and clubs around the world is “members.” If a club is strong in members, then it can undertake all kinds of activities. Unfortunately, it is clear that if numbers are too low, a club may be limited in the activities it can plan and complete.
