PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

F ellow Rotarians, how time flies! We are now into the second month of RY2017-18. The first month was so eventful. At the end

of June and during July the Club visited our sister clubs—the Rotary Clubs of Songkhla, Manda-luyong, Singapore-West and Dhonburi. We were happy, went in great numbers and had a great time. A special “Thank You” to PP Alex Chang and his family for holding the Club’s flag at RC Dhonburi. Then on 15th July we had our own Installation of the President and the Board of Directors. This time our sister clubs visited in great numbers, 30 of them. The transport logistics worked like clock work and members helmed by PP Gary Lim, PP Richard Liew and PE Heng CT and their committee worked overtime with quiet efficiency. No one was missing or got lost! Even Datin Esther (Dato Hoo Teong’s Ann) chipped in. We not only fetched them to and fro the airport but also treated them to breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Fellowship Dinner which took place a day before our Installation was a joyous occasion for renewal of friendship. Our 51st Installation was a grand, formal and pres-tigious event. Thanks to PE Heng CT and his hard-working committee everything went on fine; and to cap it all we were within budget. Rtn Tenny Lee led in the entertainment and this amateur singer who sang like a professional showcased the talents we have in the Club. IPP Sandy was regal and the ba-ton was passed by her to me in great fashion fol-lowed by the introduction of the Board of Directors RY2017-18. On Sunday 23rd July, we had a successful visit to the Jenjarom Old Folks Home by more than 20 Pudu Rotarians, their families, Rotaractors and friends. The old folks were happy to see us and we handed a cheque of RM3,000 representing our contribution for half year to help out the Home, to Mr Tia, the chief caretaker. Thank you Community Service Director Rtn Robert Tan. dishes and had good fellowship. In the meantime, please be aware of the Notice of Payment sent by the Treasurer some time back. Please make payment if you haven’t. Early payment is much appreciated as the Club has to make pay-ments to RI, the District and cover other expenses. Thank you in advance. We will be having a few inductions soon; so do keep posted and help to welcome our latest additions and friends. Best Regards.

T he new Council of Legislation (COL) changes to the Rules are penned down on page 15 for reading and digestion by all members, espe-cially the Board of Directors.

RI has made Rotary membership so easy that there’s little excuse not to be able to attract new members. Really? Unfortunately, it is still hard to bring in new dedicated members for the following reasons, I think:

From experience, the young people that came for-ward in the past soon left after one or two years. The usual excuse is “pressure of work” building their career.

Maybe some left because they got “burnt out” due to too much work in Rotary—too many committee meetings, project / events meetings.

It’s definitely costing them time and money.

And membership is still expensive considering the economic situation obtaining.

It is also not well understood what “corporate” and “senior exempt” members mean in the context of the Club image and contributions to society. (Perhaps the Membership Seminar his coming 20 Aug at Holiday Place will enlighten us.)

Meantime please ponder on this burning question. How could one get burnt out? Again, I think:

The “exempt members” category is causing the problem. For a Club like Pudu (with more than half its members being past presidents or many in the exempt category,) having eight Interact clubs, five sister clubs and one Rotaract, there’s really not enough manpower to do the project works, to attend to the Interactors and obligations to sister clubs.

The perception of exempt members is that they are not obligated to do anything other than pay their dues or be “cheque-book” Rotarians when ap-proached. They have done their part and now they want to relax.

What’s the solution?

As seniors or past presidents, if they are allowed to remain members because they qualify under this category of “exempt” — although with a tendency of not to be properly active, but still like to be Ro-tarians (albeit RINOs) — then they should be made “honorary or corporate members.”

This category should be abolished.

SPEAKER’S CV

OUR 51st PRESIDENT……… …is Rotarian Jeffery Yap who lives by the motto “Do Good to Others.” Thus beneath this man is a man who likes to help others especially the disad-vantaged. Quietly he has helped raise funds for char-ity organizations and contributed efforts to improve schools’ facilities. He has a warm heart for animals too and currently he dotes on his Siberian husky which he takes for walks everyday. Jeffery is married to lovely Ann Catherine and they have a pretty daughter Karmern. He had his early education in the suburb of Kuala Lumpur. Jeffery is in the oil distribution business and has an interest in a company that does energy saving on air-con and refrigerator. Together with Catherine they promote the Malaysia My Second Home programme to foreigners. Jeffery likes to keep healthy and is careful in his food intake and exercise. He loves durian, rambutan and all sort of fruits. He likes to travel and has visit-ed many countries. He watches action movies and listen to motivational speeches. Reading is one of his main loves and he has taken into reading the bi-ble! He dislikes unfriendly people especially the in-sincere ones. Jeffery’s first taste of Rotary was in the RC Bukit Bintang where he was the Treasurer. Subsequently he joined Pudu and held many senior positions such as Club, Community and Youth Service Director, Vice President and President Elect. As President he hopes to promote his 3 Visions of friendship and fellowship, carrying out beneficial projects and in-spiring youth leadership. He lives by the philosophy of “Do good and help others.” His favorite quote is “Everyday is a new life for a wise man as he only lives once.” If you want to know more about this quote you can easily approach him and ask him. He will be glad to explain it to you over coffee or beer and a smile! Get to know Jeffery by talking to him! Introduction by PDG Dr Paul Lee

SPEAKER’S TEXT

As I have said at the Club Assembly, we will support the RI theme of “Rotary: Making a Difference” and also provide support to the District as much as we can. Clubwise, I have told you my vision for the club during the year. Let me reiterate:

Vision 1 : to create better fellowship amongst our fellow Rotarians, Rotarian families, associates & friends of rotary

Vision 2: to carry out meaningful projects to help the community while enjoying Ro-tary and having fun

Vision 3: to help youths like our Rotarac-tors and Interactors to be effective leaders.

To meet our objectives and the vision the Board & I have planned a number of pro-jects. Briefly:

In Club Service we will carry out a number of fellowship projects eg visit to the Jenjarom old folks home and visits to our sister clubs. We will strive to be a computer savvy club and will use the computer to monitor our progress. In Vocational Service we will upgrade the computer room of the San Peng Tamil school to enable the teachers to teach in a modern method. We will upgrade the 3 science labor-atories of the SMK Dato Onn to enable stu-dents to learn science effectively. We will also be promoting the 4–Way Test to encour-age good corporate practices. In Community Service, hard working Rtn Robert Tan had already got cracking; and the upgrade of the 3 science laboratory at SMK Dato Onn is his baby. We will carry on our good work at the Jenjarom old folks home with our biannual visits. And not forgetting our PRCCF presentation at around January 2018. We will also be doing a clean water project.

International Service will be busy first by visiting our sister clubs; and hosting them when they visit us especially for our Installa-tion. The tri-club project is managed by RC Dhonburi and they will give us the details lat-er. In Youth Service, we had successfully com-pleted the Interact Leadership Training and Motivation Camp (ILTMC) and our annual hi-tea between the Rotarian and Teacher Advi-sors. We will monitor the progress of the In-teractors and the Rotaractors. As we know all these need funds. I am pleased to say we have funds from our capital-ised funds to help out. Still we need to raise some more funds and in this respect VP Pat-rick Lee is very busy planning the most appro-priate fund raising project. Probably we will be having another premier show. One other aspect I wish to point out is Mem-bership Development. It is our Club’s duty to increase our numbers by at least nett 10% and I call upon all members to help put in some effort. During the year, some of us will have disa-greements and arguments. Lets us not be per-sonal about it, as all of us bring forward our points for the sake of the good of the Club. So far if I had offended anyone, in particular some past presidents, I wish to apologize and seek your forgiveness. As you know every-one have their own strengths and weaknesses and I am not excluded. My English is not good and sometimes I cannot express myself clearly. Finally I hope the Club will enjoy the year and all of us can become good friends!!! Thank you

Jeffrey Yap

DISTRICT NEWS

I would like to take this opportunity to re-mind all Rotarians, especially those holding a position in Rotary, to register and get ac-quainted with Rotary Club Central for that is the way forward for all future dealings in Ro-tary. The Rotary.org website has been re-freshed and the Rotary Foundation grant application process has been made simple for your easy usage. We want to achieve a 100% registration rate in MY Rotary. The increase in the number of Rotaract clubs in our District augurs well for the fu-ture leaders in our District. We must engage these young leaders in all our projects and activities and continue to develop knowl-edgeable leaders for generations to come. Only then will they feel a sense of belonging and remain in the Rotary family. The Organ Donation Awareness team is working very hard to ensure that our aware-ness campaign will be a successful one by the end of this Rotary year. You will be hearing from us very soon. We Rotarians work and see differently: Our multidisciplinary perspective helps us see challenges in unique ways. We think differently: We apply leadership and expertise to social issues – and find unique solutions. We act responsibly: Our passion and perse-verance create lasting change.

We make a difference at home and around the world: Our members can be found in your community and across the globe. That’s the theme for this Rotary year – ROTARY: MAK-ING A DIFFERENCE. So , let’s make that difference.

Dr Manohur Kurup District Governor 2017/18.

Dear Fellow Rotarians, This new Rotary year began with the handover of the Governor’s jewel from IPDG Darul Ab-dullah to me on 30th June 2017. The event was hosted by the Rotary Club of Bandar Sun-way and was witnessed by Rotarians from clubs all across the Klang Valley, my friends and my family members. Several Rotarians and friends even stayed on past midnight to welcome me as the new District Governor on the 1st of July. I was very touched by the kind gesture. In Rotary, no one can hold on to the leader-ship seat no matter how good one is or how difficult it may be to vacate that seat at the end of the term. Yes, it is only for one short year. Hence, my dear Assistant Governors, District Officers and Presidents, we as a team have to execute our plans immediately as we only have 365 days to do so. The biggest problem in our District is that of membership. More than 25% of the clubs have a membership of less than 20 members. We must attempt to arrest this problem which has been constantly plaguing the clubs. All Rotarians, with the support of their Assistant Governors and Club Presidents, have an obli-gation to address this issue. I sincerely hope that all Presidents will recognize this as a problem and genuinely strive to have at least 20 members at any one time. With the right numbers, the clubs will be able to function more effectively to serve the community. One of the areas in membership that we have failed at is that of attracting Bumiputera mem-bers. This year, we have appointed Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Kg Baru City Center to attract and engage them in Rotary. We, at the District, will give them all the necessary aid to accomplish their mission. We have the dy-namic Past Presidents Natasha and Qamilee-ta who are enthusiastic about Rotary and they will spearhead this Bumiputera membership attraction program. Their first promotion will be at the Raya Get-together on 15th July 2017. I sincerely hope that many Rotarians will attend and support this event.

So, what are we going to do about it. The old meth-ods didn’t work. How about trying out a completely different method, viz: 1. Membership Chair to be upgraded to Director,

as recommended by RI under CLP, and empha-sised at every District Training Assembly.

2. Research the number of students, Interactors,

Rotaractors, GSE, IYE and Peace scholars that have benefitted from our Rotary largesse.

3. Compile the number of scholarship awardees

over past years. Any of them joined Rotary? 4 Try out a few of the above 100 ways — the

ones marked in red.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

A MAN SEES THINGS DIFFERENTLY THAN A WOMAN DOES! For all men and women who remember the past: How different we are! A wife was curious when she found an old negative in a drawer, so she had it made into a print. She was pleasantly surprised to see that it was of her at a much younger, slim-mer time. It was taken many years ago on one of her first dates with her hus-band.

When she showed him the photo, his face lit up. "Wow! Look at that!", he said with appreciation. "THAT’S MY OLD FORD!!!”
