Not so long ago, a major world wide effort to wipe out polio ensured that several billions of dollars were applied to that task. Major contributions were made by philanthropic organisations, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In order to make things happen on such a large scale, the programs must be supported by Rotary Clubs, large and small, in every corner of the globe. Proof in this principle is clearly demonstrated by the success of the Polio Plus campaign. Rotary Foundation is contributed to by almost every club in the world, and this fund is the driving force in making a success of International projects which help to save millions of lives. There is such an enormous amount of work to be done, and it is fair to say that we will not see an end to extreme need during the life span of our current membership. Our club can continue to more than pull it’s weight! Our fundraising capabilities have been strong for many years, and they will continue to be strong, as long as our members continue to develop and improve our regular fundraising events, and to contribute new ideas each year. Bulletin Each year the Rotary Club of Mitcham provides a substantial financial contribution to international projects.

Not so long ago, a major world wide effort to wipe out polio ensured that several billions of dollars were applied to that task. Major contributions were made by philanthropic organisations, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Good afternoon, Welcome to our meeting today, and special thanks to the direc-tors who arrived earlier for our board meeting. I am looking for-ward to some interesting discussions on the future plans of our club at this morning’s meeting. Last Saturday was the last day of gift wrapping at Myers For-est hill by members of our club. With the gold coin donation we almost made $200.00

Thank you to Fred Wiffrie and my friend Estelle Marl who also participated. I spent my time doing all 3 shifts 11.00 to 4.00 with half an hour off last Sunday. After we wrapped gifts, we gave the green Farmers Market book market to people, so as a PR excise it was great and we had lots of fun. The Whitehorse Farmers Market is this Sunday, I hope you all can be there to get some great fresh produce. I attended at the Club Presidents training event on Friday night and caught up with many of the District Club Presidents. It was great to compare notes and to discuss our work. Many thanks to David Ayliffe for also attending. I have received Christmas Cake and Puddings order forms. Please just give me the names and con-tact details of all those regular supporters so I can follow them up . The price of Christmas Cakes and Puddings has gone up after 6 years to $14.95 each. This is an exceptionally good source of funding for our vital community service programs. We sold over $2,000.00 worth of Cakes and Puddings last year, but our club needs to beat that record this year. Every member can help, please make an effort to help us complete our distribution list without delay.

On Sunday Sept 2 I attended the church service at St Luke’s Anglican Church Vermont.

Sunday September 2 celebrates the 100th birthday of St Luke’s Anglican Church Vermont of which Mitcham Rotary’s Richard Temby is the Reverend! (100 years since the dedication of Pioneer Church on the corner of Mitcham and Canterbury Roads.) Archbishop Philip Freier spoke on this occasion..

Sunday October 27 will conclude the Centennial celebrations and the speaker will be regional Bishop, Stephen Hale. Shaz

Description of Rotary

Rotary is an organisation of Business and Professional persons, united world wide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in all the world.

www.d9810.rotary.org.au

The concept of ROMAC was born in March 1985 when Barrie Cooper, Past President of the Rotary Club of Kangaroo Flat, a suburb of Bendigo in Rotary District 9800, visited Labassa, Fiji, with a group of Australian Surgeons. ROMAC is now in its 19th year of operations. Rotarians volunteer their time and expertise to run this Rotary program that encompasses all the Districts of Australia and New Zealand. Assisted by 68 eminent Australian surgeons who generously respond to requests for assistance, this humanitarian program has provided over 300 children from 21 developing countries with urgent medical treatment that has given them new hope.

It soon became apparent that these were children living in developing countries who, because of their medical condition, could not be helped by their own or visiting surgeons. ROMAC refers to these children as the "Forgotten Children" of this world. Their appearances have been disfigured by accident and or congenital condition and as such they are often kept hidden from society. ROMAC has successfully transformed these young lives by exposing them to Australia's most eminent Surgeons who generously provide their skills. In excess of sixty eight of Australia's finest surgeons gladly respond to ROMAC's call on behalf of the central focus of this great humanitarian project "THE FORGOTTEN CHILDREN". Over 300 children from 19 neighbouring countries have returned home to live fulfilled and meaningful lives ... thank you Australia. In 1991 the six Bendigo clubs combined to expand this project assisting a further two children. In July 1994 District Governor David Rosback declared ROMAC a District 9800 project, this was quickly followed by Rotary District's 9780 and 9790 forming their own District committees. ROMAC was recognised by Rotary International as a Multi District Committee covering all of the Districts of Australia and New Zealand. Currently all of the 23 Australian Districts and the 6 Districts of New Zealand are involved in the programme. Representatives from each District meet monthly to plan and implement a five year strategy plan. Clubs from all over Australia have become financial supporters and requests have been received from Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Bangladesh, Vanuatu, Tonga, Indonesia, Kirabas, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Solomons, Timor, Sri Lanka, Philippines, PNG, Fiji, China and Russia to assist children in desperate need. Over three hundred and sixty (360) children have now had their lives transformed by successful major and intricate surgery. 220 operations have been performed in Australia. The types of cases have varied and include herniated brains, severe burn contractures, bladders on the outside of bodies and other complicated congenital deformities.

This is the Leadership Team of St Luke’s Anglican Church in Vermont. Known as The V Team, and led by our very own Rev. Richard Temby, these dedicated members ensure that the organisation achieves its mission in the community, in the best possible way. ST LUKE’s celebrates its 100th anniversary in Mitcham this year. The old timber church is preserved on the site, having been moved sideways to make way for the big church which you see every time you drive south on Mitcham Road, and East along Canterbury Road in Vermont. Reverend Richard traverses the Parish on a souped up motorized bicycle, weather permitting, while Oscar the dog minds the office.

EXERCISE FOR PEOPLE OVER 50

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 5-lb potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato sacks. Then try 50-lb potato sacks and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level.) After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each of the sacks.

(Don’t blame me for this one, Richard Temby submitted it)
