Not So Deep Thoughts for the Day The things that come to those who wait maybe the things left by

those who got there first.

A fine is a tax for doing wrong. A tax is a fine for doing well.

When you go into court you are putting yourself in the hands of

bright until you hear them speak.

It is hard to understand how a cemetery raised its burial cost,

and blamed it on the cost of living.

It is said that if you line up all the cars in the world end to end,

someone would be stupid enough to try and overtake them.

Program: Guest Speaker—Dr. Sharon Fitzgerald—Aspree Project (Regional Mgr)

Aspirin—Reducing Events in the Elderly:

Aspirin was identified by the Egyptians and Romans (Willowbark). Bayer worked on

Willowbark in the 1800’s and mixed it with other substances—used for temporary pain

relief.

Aspirin reduces the risk of further (secondary) events. Do not know if it will stop a first

event but it is likely. Older people benefit most from aspirin use.

50% of babies born today could expect to live to 104! Cardiovascular, dementia and

cancer (Colon/Rectal) can be aided by aspirin as it prevents clots and thins the blood. (a

big help in stroke control), and prevents brain damage. It is also likely that it helps in

the prevention of Alzheimer's

The negatives: Can be a problem with bruising, bleeding, stomach ulcers. Do the bene-

fits outweigh the risks? That is the subject of the trial which will take the next five

years.

The researchers will speak with the local GP and determine participants; some will have

aspirin and some a placebo. There are medical checks. They are hoping for 19,000 par-

ticipants—12,500 in Australia and 6,500 in the USA. There are exclusions. If a partici-

pant has an event in the course of the 5-year trial they confer with the GP and participant

and determine what to do. There are a variety of centres. So far, 4,442 participants have

volunteered. There is a website for information.

A number of questions followed. Level of daily intake of aspirin is 100 mg. (Normal

dosage for headache is 300mg).

President Enid—thanked all concerned & again reminded members there would be

No formal meeting next week. There being no housekeeping duties President Enid then

closed the meeting

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Hi Everyone:

In the mail this week was an invitation from The Mayor Cr Sue

McMillan and Mr Greg Hyams inviting the President and members

to attend the 2011 Mayoral Ball to be held on Friday, 11th Novem-

ber 2011 at 7.00 pm. I’m aware that some club members have received a per-

sonal invitation but if you’d like to attend as part of the FTG Rotary Club could

you please let me know so that a table can be arranged.

November seems to be a very busy month:

1st November is the Melbourne Cup.

5th November RC of Croydon have the New Melbourne Jazz Band per-

forming at the Ringwood Arts Centre (see opposite page);

Also on 5th Mountain District Learning Centre (people who publish the

Ferntree Gully News) are also running the Ferntree Gully Discovery Day

And then we have the Mayoral Ball on 11th.

On 27th is the Foothills Fun Run;

Later in the month CFA UFTG are celebrating their Annual Dinner /

Awards Night.

All this—followed closely by the start of ―The Silly Season‖. We all know how

hectic that’s going to be. Better start storing those reserves now!

As there is no formal meeting on 24th October there may not be much to report

next week. If I can find something worth publishing I might send out an abbre-

viated version of the Bulletin, otherwise please note there’ll be no Bulletin is-

sued on 31st October.

Hope you all back a winner in the Cup!
