Teeth and Technology

Problem:

In Nicaragua there are 0.4 dentists for every 10,000 people - most people go to the dentist only when they have an abscessed tooth to have it pulled. Preventative dental care such as cleaning and sealing children's teeth to prevent cavities is almost unknown. Good oral hygiene is a simple way to improve overall health and prolong life.

Proposal:

Work together with local schools, feeding centers and an existing dental clinic to update and expand the dental equipment and technology

Train and deploy dental health educators to provide comprehensive screening and preventive services

Create a self-sustaining dental treatment facility offering comprehensive dental care for children in conjunction with an annual dental mission trip, to reduce or eliminate dental disease in the impoverished child population in Ciudad Sandino.

Festival of Sandinense Pride:

Problem:

Ciudad Sandino is lacking in recreational activities and up until now has not had a municipal festival that attracts tourists from other cities to enjoy sandinense culture and provide economic opportunity for local entrepreneurs. The image that Ciudad Sandino has at a national level is negative, and many of its own citizens aren’t familiar with the positive aspects of the city. Ciudad Sandino is known for excellence in:

• Dance troops

• Marching bands

• Sports teams

• Students

• Musicians and poets

• Culinary Arts

Potable Water:

Problem:

In the two rural communities of Trinidad Central & Cuajachillo No. 2, a combined population of 2,550 people lack sufficient access to potable water for their domestic and agricultural use and must travel several miles on dirt roads to obtain the water they need.

Collecting water daily, by horse or ox cart, becomes a major chore which severely limits their economic prosperity .

The situations in which both communities live is precarious. The wells that are being used by residents and two local primary schools are contaminated with bacteria and fecal coliforms.

The lack of water is making homes less than hygienic and forcing families to live in unsanitary situations. Bringing water to their homes in barrels is inefficient and contributing to the spread of water-related illnesses.

Potable Water:

Background Work:

Since 2013 the RCCS has been working with committed project partners to bring this project to fruition:

• In 2013 RCCS and the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise held focus group meetings to determine the communities most pressing needs, and potable water was the number one priority

• In 2015 RCCS delivered a ceramic water filter into each household in both communities to ensure clean drinking water while the larger project is carried out

• The Municipality of Ciudad Sandino has drilled a high capacity well and built storage tanks totaling 72,000 gallons

Sewage System

Problem:

In the barrio of Nueva Vida, a neighborhood formed after Hurricane Mitch, 1,100 houses remain unconnected to the sewage system.

On average 5 people use each outhouse, many are full and there is no yard space to dig new outhouses.

Some homes have no outhouse and people are forced to defecate in open air, which spreads disease and endangers public health.

In Nueva Vida, 16,000 people are affected by gray water (used wash water), which runs through the streets breeding mosquitos which carry dengue, zika, malaria and chikungunya.

Page 22: Rotary Club of Ciudad Sandinorotaryciudadsandino.org/RCCS-projects.pdf · NicaPhoto, Nagarote

TITLE | 22

Sewage System:

Proposal:

To connect Nueva Vida to Ciudad Sandino’s existing sewage system. One section of houses is connected, but the majority are not because they are located in an area that drains away from the sewage treatment plant, thus requiring a technical study and design.

Progress:

The 35 members of the Nueva Vida Rotary Community Corps held a series of focus groups to find out what the community’s biggest problems are.

Based on the results from those focus groups, the RCC carried out a door-to-door survey which showed the problems most affecting the community are gray water and sewage.

Preschool Playground:

Problem:

Play are as and playground equipment for preschool children within the municipality of Ciudad Sandino are inadequate and in sometimes dangerous condition. Use of inappropriate materials has caused accidents and injuries to students at the Los Cumiches Prechool, making it impossible for children to play there.

Proposal:

As play at this age is especially important for motor skill and social development in children, it is necessariy for them to have a safe are a in which to play and playground equipment in good shape, resulting in a place where they can share and play together wit hthe rest of the students.

To make this possible, it’s necessary to uninstall the deteriorated metal structures and install new, modern toys which inspire creativity and play in the preschoolers.

Traditional Culinary Arts:

Problem: Nicaragua is known for its rich culture around food, but this is being threatened by new generations losing the habit of making and eating Nicaraguan dishes and instead eating fast food and junk food. The old recipes are being lost.

Proposal:

Support the rescue of Nicaraguan culinary arts through identifying families that over the years have continued making these products and who can be a source of motivation and instruction for younger generations as well as foreigners visiting the municipality

Create traditional Nicaraguan culinary workshops in order to organize, train, and equip these families to offer not just a product, but cooking classes emphasizing food’s cultural value, passing this knowledge on to future generations

To improve families’ quality of life with new alternatives for economic development.

TITLE | 28

Rural Ecotourism:

Problem: The rural areas of Ciudad Sandino are plagued by deforestation because cutting down trees and selling them for firewood is one of the few ways people in the countryside can make money for their families. Additionally, many of the rural traditions are being lost as much of the population migrates to the cities where more work opportunities exist.

Those who live in the urban part of Ciudad Sandino have not been to the rural area of their own municipality and many have not seen the diverse flora and fauna of their own community, much less the traditions of rural life and agricultural work.

Proposal:

To work together with the rural communities of Ciudad Sandino and its Municipality to develop ecotourism in the rural areas of Ciudad Sandino.

To develop, over time, an integral ecotourism program aimed at local, regional, national and international tourists.

Page 29: Rotary Club of Ciudad Sandinorotaryciudadsandino.org/RCCS-projects.pdf · NicaPhoto, Nagarote

TITLE | 29

Rural Ecotourism:

Proposal: These activities will attract tourists who will bring with them a source of income for the rural areas of the municipality. The possibility of having an income through showing off the rich flora and fauna of the region will create an alternative to selling firewood and deforestation, and will stimulate reforestation and the nurture of the environment, which will have a positive effect for the whole community. Background:

This project is being developed in several phases:

Phase I (In process thanks to funding from the Rotary Club of Sevierville, TN, USA): Selection of a core group from rural villages to participate in a Pilot Project. Take them to other sites where rural communities have managed to develop sustainable ecotourism while at the same time being caretakers of the environment. Examples of such places include the Wild Reserve Chocoyero/El Brujo in Ticuantepe, El Tisey in Estelí and reforestation projects in the neighboring municipality of Mateare in the village of San Andrés de la Palanca. Two people will be trained as tour guides. A trail will be developed for tourists and publicity will be done within the municipality and among known networks as a pilot project.

Page 30: Rotary Club of Ciudad Sandinorotaryciudadsandino.org/RCCS-projects.pdf · NicaPhoto, Nagarote

TITLE | 30

Rural Ecotourism:

Proposal: Phase II: Offer participants recompense for reforestation, care of the baby trees, plants, and animals on their farms. Develop two options of tourist activities in the area in addition to the hiking trail. Develop another hiking trail. Train four additional guides. Expand publicity nationally and internationally. Estimated Cost of Phase II: $4,500

Phase III: Meet goals of reforestation and care for the environment. Continue expanding types of available tourist activities including an option for a 3-day package, learning and hiking from one village to the next, staying with families in each village. This phase will include financing for families to add rooms in their homes to accommodate overnight visitors and financing to continue reforesting and caring for the environment. There will be an evaluation of the Project by the communities during each Phase.

Estimated Cost of Phase III: $5,00o

Sponsorship Opportunities:

Problem:

Raising money in our impoverished community is a difficult task, and since many of our own members work for low pay employed in social services, we are not an affluent Club. We feel that participating in national and regional Rotary conferences is important networking for our Club, and we are strongly committed to fomenting youth leadership in our community.

Proposal: We seek sponsorship from other Rotary Clubs for these activities:

District 4240 RYLA Cost: $250 pp

Youth Leadership Academy Cost: $50 pp

District Conference Cost: $400 pp

Uniting Americas Project Fair Cost (2018 in Belize): 1-2 members @ $750 pp/$150 Stand
