LAST WEEK – POLICING LOCALLY Sgt Len Van Andel told us about his life as a member of Victoria Police over some 25 years. Although Len began his career at Russell Street Police Station, he moved through various roles, including Detective appointments, before being posted to Gisborne as Sergeant in Charge. Len has found a satisfying role at Gisborne and enjoys the community’s support and respect.

LEUKAEMIA LUNCH On Sunday, 18th September, a gathering of 60 plus descended on Pat and Jacek’s home for the purpose of raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation.
Four “perfects” were attained; perfect location, perfect ambience, perfect friends, and perfect weather.
Mien Hosts, Pat and Jacek, were outstanding in their preparations and made all welcome. There is a possibility should there be a successful matching grant from the Pratt Foundation, a sum, in excess, of $4,000 will be realised. A final total will be forthcoming soon.
Some of the guests included Joanne Duncan MP, PDG Judy Nettleton and A.G. Gabrielle Morgan.
Congratulations to PP Pat and PP Jacek for a fantastic day.
President Robert’s Message Further to the article about the Leukaemia Lunch, I give my personal thanks to those “backroom” helpers without which it would not have been such a successful day.
Thanks goes to PP Michael Wiedermann, Frances and Peter Wearne, and Kay Jones who labored all afternoon feeding us and quenching our thirsts.
Last week’s meeting gave the members a chance to say hello to PP Pat and Phil’s guests, Brian & Hydie
Rice and Lorelly Harman.

MAXIMS from SAM RIGGIO Everyone is faced with hurdles in their life; if you give up at the first hurdle you will get nowhere; but if you take one hurdle at a time, you will be able to achieve anything.
STEPS TO ENERGY EFFICIENCY 5. Shorten showers to less than 5 minutes.
WISDOM? He who laughs last, thinks slowest.
THANK YOU FROM M.S. Jeremy Wright, Executive Director of MS Research Australia, has written to Jacek, viz: … “With the combination of your generous support, and the terrific research now underway (and with the efforts from our very busy MSRA team), great outcomes are possible - like the recent news of Australia’s role in a major genetic discovery.”
“This research is an enormous step towards the understanding of MS!!” For more information: Visit http://www.mstrials.org.au

ORGAN DONATION – MORE NEEDED Federal MP Donna Petrovich, commenting on the Inquiry into Organ donation, is encouraging people to discuss organ donation with their loved ones.
Reports from the Organ & Tissue Authority, A,.M.A., Transplant Australia, and Kidney Health Australia, indicate that there are credible waiting times for people needing donations.
Although last year Australia had the highest donation and transplant outcomes recorded, the O&TA said that there was a lot more work to be done yet.
