Our Happy DayPresident Sioux assisted by District Governor and President Elect Bill Marles happily inducted Cathy Chong, Lara Winsor and Michael Dodd into our club and all were heartily received and given a resounding applause.

Members will be interested to know that Cathy is married to Richard Chong. She is President of the China Welfare Services of SA, lives in Kensington and is a Management Consultant.

Lara Winsor has previously spoken to our club on the appreciation of wine, she then moved to Tasmania. Fortunately for us she has returned to SA and joined our club. Lara is now involved in the Hospitality Industry at a Cellar Door Business in Hahndorf and lives in Colonel Light Gardens.

Michael Dodd is a Company Director and has also been a guest speaker at our club. He is Managing Director of his business Next Generation HQ Pty.

Michael has transferred to our club from Salisbury Rotary where he has been a member since April 2011. He lives at Woodville South and as you will note in another article in the Bulletin he has already well and truly served the club.

All three new members indicated how pleased they were to be members of Rotary.

What’s coming up?

Meeting 2392, 18 April

Speaker: Matthew Carey, CEO, Rajani Vasan

Review John Madigan

In her introduction Rajani indicated Matthew was a very important and much liked member of the Blind Sporting Council staff. She also said her role in the organisation was to create awareness as it was the only sporting organisation involving the blind.

Matthew who has been totally blind since birth is 35, incredibly resilient, and the son of retired Glenelg football champion Peter Cary. He lives at Glenelg.

He is very independent and travels to and from work on public transport and receives little assistance in his paid employment.

A most interesting statement from him was ‘sport is a luxury and is everything’.

Previous speakers

His father was determined that Matthew would be involved in sport. At Townsend House he was a keen participant in physical education, ran 5 km on a treadmill and at the age of seven he went to the Sydney Games where he won six medals including three gold. He also won 10 medals at the Pan Pacific Games and a further nine including gold at other games. He’s also participated in Blind Cricket at a state level.

He was moved when he told how blind children needed schooling and sport, and sadly how a friend prematurely died as her friends could not afford to support her.

Matthew Carey has a brilliant knowledge of sport. Even as a young child he was a regular on talk back radio. He is an excellent speaker and had a very pertinent message: Blind and vision impaired people need support.

His presentation was received with a standing ovation.

Speaker Matthew Carey CEO Rajani Vasan and President Sioux.

The District donated $162,000 in 2010/11, $126,000 in 2011/12 and only $45,900 as at 22 April for 2012/13.

He also encouraged Alumni representatives Catherine, Ashleigh and John to research names of past club representatives to District Projects in preparation for our 50th Birthday Celebration in January 2014.

By PE Bill Marles

Some rather tight planning was needed for our Club to step in and help out Arthritis SA at the ABC Gardener’s Market (formerly Carpark Capers).

Arthritis SA were the chosen charity to benefit from the Autumn 2013 expo.

There were around 120 stall holders, including Adelaide West’s BBQ. Most stocked a range of plants, ornaments and garden related products.

Gates opened to stall holders at 6 am. Our BBQ kicked off at 7 am to serve bacon and egg muffins to the stallholders for brekky. Then we moved on to sausages as the morning moved on … but the most popular all day was easily the muffins! A lesson for the future we think.

The public invaded at 8.30 am with a huge rush. The place was packed and our BBQ had a line-up 20 long.

A huge effort by all. John Madign, Ashleigh Lorraine and Bill Marles pulled together the supplies and hired the Rotary Club of Elizabeth’s wonderful BBQ.

They were eagerly assisted on the day by Ian Lumsden; Peter & Jill Thompson; Kevin Hollister (Adelaide East); Judy Tink (Bill’s mother-in-law); Eileen Fagioli (expert server; very likely new Club member and likely incoming Treasurer), plus Michelle & Brittany Tink.

Last but most certainly not least a superb effort on the BBQ by Michael Dodd, our new member transferring in from Salisbury Club who cooked his heart out all morning until we wrapped up about noon! (Michael said he came with Sausage Sizzle ‘references’ up front – and now we can see why!).

A big thanks to Kym @ 5EBI for the use of his huge refrigerators to keep everything fresh and chill the drinks. (Sorry Kym for the stink of onions. We’re told that will fade over the next 12 months! Promise.)

Much praise was received from our customers ... so we must thank Slape & Sons @ Newton for the gorgeous Snags & Bacon (with so much flavour and so little fat) ... not to mention the great price to support Rotary.

Certainly, all of us manning the BBQ on the day had a ball. Don’t think anyone had even five minutes for a sit-down.

ABC Gardener’s Market BBQSaturday, 13 April 2013

Eileen Fagioli, Kevin Hollister and John Madigan serving the hungry crowd.

Peter & Jill Thompson could barely keep up feeding the BBQ team with the next batch of supplies.

A huge crowd turned out to the ABC Autumn Gardener’s market. In excess of 7,000 people we heard.

Soren Aabyl Kieke Gaard (1813 – 1855)

We’re pleased to report that the ABC gave the Arthritis SA team a 10 / 10 score for the magnificent organisation of the day.

We hear that the best organising effort from past charities at this event raised around $11,500. Arthritis SA cleared over $16,000!!! Magnificent. Our BBQ contributed a little over $1,000 to this tally.

Thank you to all who assisted this fun day at short notice.

As you can see, the BBQ plate was FULL not stop from 7 am to noon.
