CLUB HISTORYLike many local football clubs, the history of Rossington Main FC has been revised several times in recent years. Originally thought to have been formed in 1926, local knowledge has since revised this date to 1919 when ‘Rossington Colliery’ entered the Sheffield Association League, playing their fixtures on ground at the back of the Colliery offices. A club had competed under the Rossington Colliery name in 1917, but only since 1919 has the club been in continued existence.

The club moved to their current Oxford Street ground in 1921, and just a few years later enjoyed their best ever run in the FA Cup, reaching the 4th Qualifying Round in the 1924-25 season, where they were beaten 3-0 at Lincoln City. The club continued under the name Rossington Colliery for thirty years, enjoying its most successful season at the end of the Second World War when they did the ‘Doncaster Double’, winning both the Doncaster Senior League and Cup in 1944-45. Following the nationalisation of the mines in 1948, the club endured a change of name to Rossington Miners Welfare, and under this moniker they lifted the Doncaster Senior League Premier Division Cup in 1974.

In 1983, now known as Rossington Main, the club became founder members of the Central Midlands League, being promoted to the Premier Division as runners-up in their first season. The following year the club took the top flight by storm, winning the Premier Division title and completing the double with the Premier Division Cup. In 1991, following the erection of floodlights and a new Main Stand at Oxford Street which were christened with a friendly against Leeds United that attracted a crowd of around 1,200, the club made the step up to the Northern Counties East League and have remained in Division One ever since. In 1998, after lengthy negotiations, the club merged with near neighbours Rossington FC.

Formed as Station FC in the 1970s (initially changing in a small building at the pub of the same name for games on the adjacent Tornedale field) they had begun life in local Sunday football, but had progressed rapidly, relocating to Rossington Welfare and joining the Central Midlands League in 1986. Here they excelled early on, lifting nine awards in their first two seasons in the league including the Division One title in 1987-88.

Rossington FC continued to grow operating four teams; a Sunday side and an Under 18s team flanking their 1st and 2nd teams in the Central Midlands League. But, despite growth and development on the field the club

were unable to match the expectations of the Central Midlands League financially, and in 1998 they elected to leave the league; facilitating the merger.

Immediately after the merger Main ran both an over 35s and an under 18s team to much success. The over 35s made good progress in the Wragg Sheffield & Hallamshire League finishing Division 2A Champions in 2001 and Division 1A Runners-up the following year. Whilst the under 18s enjoyed continued success in the Doncaster & District Boys League. The club’s reserves, competing in the Doncaster & District League, have also enjoyed much success since the merger. They achieved a League and Cup Double in 2000, have reached the Cup final on three other occasions in the past decade, and finished as League runners-up just last season.

The early years of the 21st century weren’t as kind on the Rossington Main 1st team, but recently the club has enjoyed a revival of fortunes and reasserted itself at the heart of the community. In 2008 much work was done at Oxford Street to bring the club’s home back up to scratch, a job rewarded as the club hosted Doncaster Rovers,in a pre-season friendly.; the gate receipts from which enabled the club to regain a financially sound footing. Further ground improvements have followed each summer, as the club have looked to provide better facilities for players and supporters alike, most notable of which is the new clubhouse which has enabled the club to bring in much needed revenue. The pride in the club’s off the field set-up continued with the club’s programme picking up awards in both 2011 and 2012 whilst edited by Pete Murden.

Off field progress has been matched on the pitch too, with Main reaching the final of the Wilkinson Sword Trophy in 2011. And in 2011-12 the club enjoyed its best ever season in the Northern Counties East League, breaking club goalscoring and points records to finish seventh, despite losing 11 members of the 1st team squad along the way.

Rossington Main now operates two sides on a Saturday. The aims of the club are to provide a unified approach to football in the village so that there is a natural progression in the development of the game. The club strives to sustain competition at the highest possible and affordable level, to continue to provide excellent facilities for both players and spectators, to give opportunity for local players to progress, to reward loyalty and cater for the progression of football in the community of Rossington.

Good afternoon and thank you for choosing to come down to Oxford Street and support your local team for today’s NCEL Division One match with Selby Town. All at Rossington Main would like to bid a warm welcome the players, supporters and committee of the Robins on their first visit to us in some years.

Mid November seems far too early to be putting up Christmas decorations let alone talking about ‘six-pointers’. However, it is worth noting that next weekend’s trip to Appleby Frodingham will mark the halfway point in our Division One league season, and so with Main currently struggling at the wrong end of the division points need to be picked up wherever possible. As such, it is hard to look at today’s home game against the league’s bottom club as being anything other than a must-win fixture for us.

Those who were here on Tuesday night will have seen another frustrating defeat for Rossington who were certainly not three goals the worse of our opponents Bottesford Town. Had Main managed to take some of the chances created in the first half then it could have been a very different game. Hopefully that bit of luck we’ve been lacking will finally befall us this afternoon.

Tuesday night was also the first time I’ve managed to make it down to Oxford Street from my North Yorkshire exile since taking over programme duties, so it was nice to receive so many positive comments about Main Issue. I hope this latest copy lives up to your increasing expectations.

Enjoy the Game. Up the Main!Glen Wilson

Teamsheets for today’s match are available shortly before kick-off from the Main Stand at a nominal fee of 20p. Please try and have the correct change.

ON THIS DAY

2010 // NCEL DIVISION ONESHIREBROOK TOWN 1-2 ROSSINGTON MAIN

A great, and somewhat surprise away win for the Main who had won just one from eleven matches going into this game at Langwith Road. Jason Stokes opened the scoring s he put Main ahead midway through the half, but the game would be all

square before the break as Michael Lyall equalised for Shirebrook inside ten minutes. A second half goal from skipper Michael ‘Chips’ MacDonald would be enough to win the game for Main though in front of a crowd of 58.

A week after their first meeting with the newly formed Scarborough club at Oxford Street, Main travelled to the coast for the return fixture. Though Main held out until the 50th

minute the superiority of their hosts eventually shone through as they ran in four second half goals in front of 493 fans at Bridlington’s Queensway Stadium.

A goal heavy November in 2009 saw thirty goals scored in Main’s seven games, with this home win over Barton Town Old Boys coming just three days after a pulsating 4-4 draw at Bottesford Town. Main went ahead through Jason Stokes on twenty-two minutes and added to their lead

just six minutes late as Jake Vernon ensured a 2-0 scoreline at the break. Continuing where they left off in the second half Stokes grabbed a second on 64 minutes to wrap up the result and send the majority of the 80 strong crowd home from Oxford Street happy.

At home for the third Saturday in a row the pre-merger Rossington FC cantered to a 5-1 win over Slack & Parr in front of a crowd of 100 on the Welfare field. Star of the show for Rossington was Nigel Feirn who opened the scoring after quarter of

TODAY’S VISITORS

Selby Town were formed in 1919, adopting the nickname “The Robins” from the start. The first senior club in the town, a year later, in 1920, they became founder members of The Yorkshire League and are the only club to have played all 62 seasons of that League’s existence.

The team’s golden era was the 1930s and 1950s when winning trophies became a bit of a habit. The 1930s saw The Robins win the Yorkshire League three times, The West Riding Trophy three times and The League Cup as well. In the 1950s the club won the Yorkshire League on a further two occasions, triumphed in the League Cup twice and reached the first round of the F.A.Cup four times. In 1954 he Robins also recorded the club’s highest ever attendance, as 7,000 saw an FA Cup 1st round tie with Bradford Park Avenue.

The Robins moved across town from their original home at The Bowling Green to their current Flaxley Road ground on Richard Street, which was purpose built in the early 50s. It is hoped that the club will in the future be moving to a brand new Conference standard stadium on East Common Lane next to Selby College.

The club’s record goalscorer is Graham Shepherd who notched up 158 goals between 1963 and 1982.

In the modern era one of Selby Towns’ most successful seasons came in 1996 when they won the NCEL Division One title and also progressed to the 4th round of the FA Vase. .A few years later, under the guidance of former Player Bob Lyon the club flourished

A WARM WELCOME TO SELBY TOWNonce more, winning the Presidents Cup, Barkston Ash Cup and The Vets over 40’s all in 2001.

Season 2004/05 saw the first team finish runners up in the NCEL Premier Division and the Under 19’s runners up in the Youth Alliance league. In 2009 the first team were Runners up in the Presidents Cup and semi-finalists in the League Cup.

After a few upheavals in the past two seasons, the club has seen four managers in 24 months as they try to solidify the club after the departure of long standing manager Lyons. At the start of the 2011-12 season Leon Sewell was appointed as manager, but after a dismal run of results he was asked to leave in September 2011, and Dave Heard was appointed. He managed to win his first game in charge as the Robins went through to the first round of the FA Vase with a 2-1 victory against Winterton Rangers. However, Heard too soon departed and Graham Hodder took the reigns, but was unable to prevent relegation from the top flight.

Following relegation Hodder also stepped down, and after a number of interviews the board appointed Phil Jones as manager ahead of the 2012-13 season with local man Nick Emery as his assistant. With Town bottom of the table going into November Jones resigned as manager after defeat to Grimsby Borough and at the time of print Selby were still searching for their fifth manager in 28 months.

LEAGUE NEWS

Steve Adams is the new man in the hot seat at NCEL Premier Division side Winterton Rangers. The ex-Maltby Main manager took over the reigns at West Street following the resignation of Lee Danysz, who stepped down last Tuesday, citing family reasons. The club have gone on record to publically thank Danysz for all his efforts since joining them in the summer.

With senior players Leigh Herrick and Mark McDonagh taking charge of team affairs for Winterton’s North Lincolnshire derby against Barton Town Old Boys last Saturday, which Rangers lost 3-0, Adam’s first game in charge of Rangers came against the team he left in the summer, Maltby Main on Tuesday night, but it was his ex-employers who triumphed, Main winning 2-1.

BOROUGH ATTENDANCES REVISED

SELBY CONSIDER APPLICATIONS AS PHIL JONES FLIES ROBINS’ NEST

In Tuesday night’s edition of the Main Issue we mentioned Grimsby Borough’s surprise inclusion as one of six NCEL clubs amongst the 250 top supported non-league sides in England and Wales according to the website Non League Matters.

Since that issue went to print the North Lincolnshire club’s crowd figures appear to have been significantly revised with as many as 100 shaved of some previously declared gates. It must be a very reflective fence they have around the ground at Bradley Road.

Today’s opponents Selby Town have had a difficult week after manager Phil Jones left the club in the wake of last Saturday’s defeat to Grimsby Borough. The 2-1 home loss was the Robins’ eighth consecutive league game without a win, a run of form which has seen them rooted to the foot of the table.

Officials at the Rigid Group Stadium placed on record their appreciation for all of Jones’ efforts, wishing him well for the future.

Following Jones departure Selby were pleasingly surprised by the number of applications received for the vacant post, and elected to close the vacancy early as they considered the nine submissions they had received. At the time of Main Issue going to print Selby had yet to announce their new boss, so feel free to participate in your own game of Guess Who behind the Away dugout at Oxford Street this afternoon.

MAIN IN ACTION

A frustrating trip across South Yorkshire for the Main as they went down 3-1 to Worsborough Bridge Athletic in tricky conditions. Athletic’s Park Road pitch had been under water the previous weekend and was only passed fit in a pre-match inspection, with much sand having been applied to the surface to counter the water damage. The result was a bobbly surface and a game that Rossington struggled to settle into.

Going down the slope in the first half the Main looked bright early on, but it was the home side who went ahead just eleven minutes in. Luke Atkinson breaking into the penalty area only to be tripped by a Main defender and the referee pointed to the spot. Liam McFayden converting the penalty to give Athletic a 1-0 lead.

Within a couple of minutes Rossington were back level though as they took advantage of a lack of concentration in the home defence, A break down the right saw the ball fall to Jonathan Mirfin and his low shot beat the home keeper to level the scores. The rest of the half was to prove in the main uneventful, and it remained 1-1 right through to the break.

The second half began as the first had finished, as a scrappy affair

bogged down in midfield with few notable opportunities on goal. With twenty minutes to go the home side shuffled their pack and introduced the pacey Lee Anthony on the right. The changes would pay dividends relatively quickly as Athletic won a corner on the right. The delivery found Lee Garside in enough space to place a powerful header beyond Lee Appleby and put the home side back in front.

Within a few minutes that lead was increased as Rossington lost their shape and composure trying to chase the game. Atkinson won a free-kick on the left and from the delivery Garside was again free to plant another header into the Main net to make it 3-1.

That’s how things remained until the final whistle with Main struggling to create clear chances and falling to another frustrating defeat.

MAIN IN ACTION

A disappointing night at Oxford Street for Rossington Main as they found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline which somewhat flattered the visitors. Bottesford were certainly quick and effective going forward, but were far from resolute in all areas of the field, and had Rossington taken their own first half chances then the scoreline could, and should, have been much different.

As has been a worrying characteristic of late Main started sluggishly and it was the visitors who had the better of the opening exchanges; Bottesford going ahead after just nine minutes. Having thwarted one ball into the box Rossington failed to regain their shape and when the ball came in from the right again The Poachers had two men over with Danny Boulton meeting the cross to head home the opening goal.

After spending the opening quarter of an hour on the back foot Main steadily began to assert themselves on the game and had the better of the match’s second quarter. Indeed Rossington should have been level as they showed some neat approach play following a corner; Shaun Pendleton getting round the back of Bottesford on the right to fire a low ball across goal. Unfortunately, with the goal begging Adam Wisdom lost the ball beneath his feet, and despite the best efforts of Nathan Fraser arriving late it fell the wrong side of the post.

Moments later Wisdom would have another great chance to level the

game, but again his touch let him down; in behind the Bottesford back-line Wisdom hesitated expecting a linesman’s flag, and when none came his heavy touch allowed the keeper to collect. Rossington’s inability to take their chances would be punished ten minutes before the break as Martin Pembleton doubled the visitors’ lead; his low shot from outside the area going in off the inside of the post.

Throughout the second half Main would struggle to get themselves into the match and on the hour mark fell even further behind as Bottesford broke from defence. Scott Wilby picked the ball way out on the left and carried it all the way to the edge of the box before hitting a firm shot beyond Lee Appleby for 3-0.

Rossington had glimpses of goal late on; a Nathan Fraser shot flew just wide, whilst the visitors’ keeper was also tested on one occasion, but their luck in front of goal remains non existent and Bottesford were able to see out the victory without too much concern.

MAIN NEWSROSSINGTON MAIN GET FIRST CLASS BOOST

Despite the 3-0 defeat, Tuesday night’s match with Bottesford Town did bring some reason to cheer for the Main as they were given a welcome financial boost by First Group.

The transport and travel firm have a charity and sponsorship fund for worthy causes within the community, and with the support of Pete Mair, a bid from Rossington Main proved successful.

First have very kindly awarded £1,000 to Rossington Main to go towards the improvement of facilities here at Oxford Street.

The club and the committee at Rossington Main are hugely thankful to Pete and First Group for their generosity.

PENDLETON MOVES ON DOWN UNDERThe good news above is tempered with some disappointment for the club this week as defender Shaun Pendleton is set to play his last game for the Main today.

‘Pendo’ has been a valuable member of the team, not only this season but in previous campaigns as well.An excellent defensive footballer and more than capable of performing in midfield as well, he has also proved a great leader too having taken over the captain’s armband during Dave Holvey’s absence through injury.

Shaun leaves the club to move to Australia, and all at the club wish him well with his move down under. He will of course always be welcome back at Oxford Street in the future.

IN RESERVE

The second team continued their good form in the knock out competitions they progressed to the 3rd round of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Rosehill Press Challenge Cup.

Caribbean Sports of the Sheffield County Senior League were the visitors to Oxford Street for this second round tie last Saturday. The visitors were an unknown quantity to the Main, and their late arrival for the fixture only served to further the mystery of the opponents.

With Scott Spencer and Niall Doyle doing the Reserves proud in the 1st team squad of late and James Batchelor unavailable, Rhys Brailey wore the armband for the first time. Ryan Shelton started his first game of the season up top with Eric McMillan. Young Josh Bathgate started wide left and Tom Harte stepped into central midfield. The Main also welcomed the return of Dan Elcoat from injury.

The Main’s defence were particularly faultless in this win, Will Rowley, Jonathan Cook, Dean Jones and Daniel Green all putting in excellent performances to ensure a clean sheet.

The first half was quite an even affair, with both teams taking time to measure each other up. The closest either side came to scoring was a fantastic volley by Bathgate for the Main which was well saved by the visitors’ keeper. At the other end Dan

Lodge went untroubled for the first forty-five minutes.

The second half proved to be more open, and the Main took full advantage. A smart move down the right including Jones, ended with a Harte cross that was headed home by Dave McGee to put Rossington ahead.

The second goal came not long after when 16 year old Bathgate knocked a superb pass into the path of Shelton, who quickly latched onto it and smartly finished past the onrushing keeper to wrap up the victory.

Despite moving their best player from centre back to centre forward in the latter stages of the game, Caribbean Sports never came close to scoring as the Main’s back line remaining organised and concentrated to secure a 2-0 win and a place in the hat for round three.

FOOTBALL’S FAULTS CONTINUING MAIN ISSUE’S LOOK AT FOOTBALL’S UGLY SIDE

NO. 4. ‘CLEM’ FROM THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE SHOWEach and every Saturday, from August through to May, a nation waits nervously. All of us on edge, uneasy, wary at the prospect that this time it could be us. This Saturday could be the day that he strikes our town. We cannot avoid him, we cannot prevent him, we can only hope that ultimately he is more scared than us, and that if we don’t move he will not attack us. The threat is very real. And that reality is that one day, whether we like it or not, ‘Clem’ will turn in our town.

He will come bounding over with his over-familiar music teacher mateyness, popping up out of nowehere to deliver a piece to camera as if he’s just escaped from the hand of Matthew Corbett. He will quiz staff and fans and bemused players with nonsensical questioning and a fixed grin, like a mauve jumper clad Jim Henson creation that had gone sentient. Clem is always looking for an angle, he is a snooker player making a safety shot whilst dressed as a pantomime horse. Out of place and of concern.

The main problem with ‘Clem’ is that he is the sort of man who you suspect facilitated his own nickname, to the point that I don’t even know what his actual name is. The enthusiasm he displays toward those he interviews is

too often mis-placed, meaning it comes across as the sort of faux-jocularity displayed by someone you vaguely know as they lead up to asking for a favour or reimbursement of that tenner they once leant you; “Here he is… Gaffer, the Gaffer, eh? Look at you, check the suit out. How you settling in? Yeah… hey, look… mate… you couldn’t give us a hand shifting this wardrobe could you?”

In Clem lies the crux of the failings of football on television, in that he endeavours so earnestly to please it ultimately disappoints. Football coverage increasingly and cringingly tries to tap into some marketing perceived version of supporters and their ‘banter ’; jokes about players with tashes and words like ‘tekkers’ and ‘worldy’ This is Clem’s fuel.

Perhaps Clem’s cheery inside look at teams would be ideal for a Football League magazine show, but on a highlights programme, at midnight, when you just want to see your team’s goals and get off to bed, it just grates. To all intents and purposes Clem is The Texan from Joseph Heller ’s Catch-22, a man so happy and good-natured that ultimately no-one can stand him.

MEET THE MAIN MENSteve Lodge (Manager)Steve took over the reigns for the end of the 2010/11 season, leading the club to the Wilkinson Sword Trophy. Last season, Steve’s first full season in charge, was also successful as the first team broke a number of club records to achieve their best NCEL finish. A firm believer in club spirit, which is why most players and officials at the club are local.

Ian Wilson (Assistant Manager)A former Wales youth and amateur international Ian also does an excellent job as club groundsman amongst other roles. Previously in charge of Rossington FC, he took that club from local Sunday football to the top flight of the Central Midlands League

Lee ApplebyNow in his 7th season at the Main, making him one of the top appearance makers in recent years Lee was instrumental in our record breaking season last year with some outstanding performances and 12 clean sheets. Dedicated, honest and hardworking as well as agile, quick and boasting superb handling Lee is one of the best keepers the NCEL has to offer.

Jordan WildeyYoung Jordan will provide competition for the number one shirt this year after some impressive displays in tough games for both 1st and 2nd teams last season where he performed maturely and competently. He is a fantastic shot stopper, agile and very confident.

Bradley BillamFlying full back Brad continues to grow at left back; combining athleticism, confidence and consistency with a willingness to work forwards and backwards to become a valuable member of the Main squad. His attacking prowess was clear to see last year as he was credited with 8 assists.

Dan ElcoatPrimarily a central defender, Dan can play anywhere across the back four and also in

central midfield. He is strong in the air and tenacious in the tackle, boasting good communication skills and a strong desire to play.

Chris HansonChris joined the Main late last season from Yorkshire Main, playing a versatile role in the Rossington defence. Chris is calm in possession and is a good reader of the game.

Tom HarteVery good on the ball and well organised Tom came back to football last year after some time away from the game. He played with the Reserves last season but has shown during pre-season that he is capable of becoming a 1st team player.

David Holvey2011/12 Manager’s Player of the Year; Club Captain Dave lead by example last year and his never say die attitude and loyalty to the club make him an invaluable asset. A great leader and robust defender Dave is also capable of pin-point long range passes that turn defence quickly into attack.

Dean JonesDean can play in any position across the back four, as he has done for the Reserves. Another player to return to the game after some time away, Dean is a good footballer and very good in the air.

Will Rowley2011/12 Reserves Players’ Player of the Year. Long-time Main man Will is an old school central defender who provided some excellent displays last season. Solid in the air, well-timed in the tackle and a threat at set pieces he is reliable and extremely valuable for both sides.

Richard SpearsVery hard working, committed and energetic, Richard played an important role in the club’s strong 2011/12 campaign. Richard will no doubt look to continue working hard to cement his place in the team.

SPECTATOR NOTICEThe committee, officials and all volunteers involved at Rossington Main have worked hard in recent years to establish a positive reputation for the club in both the local community and the wider footballing fraternity. We are rightly proud that this club is appreciated as one which upholds the true values of grassroots community football, and that Oxford Street is seen as a welcoming and friendly ground to visit. We ask that you help us to maintain this reputation during your time with us at the ground, ensuring that all present have a positive experience, regardless of the match result, and leave more than happy to visit us at Oxford Street again. Football is, after all, a game to be enjoyed by players, spectators and officials alike.
