THE

THOUGHT OF THE MONTHMAKE YOUR OW N PROPHECIES

HE present is themost transient ofthe three actual

and imaginedstates of our con-sciousness. Thischanging presentis ever adding tothe growing past,and the  future  isa shadow cast byit. The indistinct-ness of the future,to our minds, con-

fers upon it a vastness and a realism itdoes not actually possess. Since thepast can only be revered or despised,

and the present is constantly waning,men are ever drawn to the future. It issomething yet unrealized,  and in astrange sort of way men hope to per-ceive it from afar. Thus they seek tochoose from it, in advance, what theywant, and discard what they do notlike, as a housewife selecting fruit in amarket place.

The more unstable and shifting arethe present times and circumstances, themore men scramble to find some landingplace in the future. Men cannot per-ceive as an actuality what as yet has no

substance. Rather than admit, however,that the stuff of which the future ismade is in each moment of the present,they think the vision they need is pos-sessed by a chosen few. In their search,they turn to the vagaries of all kinds ofmethods of prognostication, over whichseers and prophets preside, often infalse majesty. That some of these prog-nosticators are amazing in the accuracy

of their predictions is not so much evi-dence of a specially endowed faculty orsystem to pierce the veil of tomorrow,

as it is a tribute to their keen analysis of today.  For analogy, the man who.upon studying a barometer, announcesthe coming of a storm tomorrow, hasn’thad a vision of the future, rather he hasbecome aware of a cause existing in thepresent. Most men trample beneaththeir feet on earth those substantialsigns of future events, for which theystretch their necks to scan the heavens.

The greatest prophet of all is the pre-vailing times.  If you would know whatthe tomorrow should and will  bringforth, reverse your point of observation,place self   in the indeterminate future,then look back upon the present. So letus assume this position and lookingupon the things about which we arefamiliar, let us do a kind of realistic pre-dicting,  for out of the present arisesthose needs which shape the future.

 As a guide for our observation, let usdivide our lives into four general spheresof activity. For practical purposes, weshall say there are thespiritual, political and social, educational,  and economic. There are many who disclaim and who

would protest an inclusion of their livesin any spiritual sphere. However, I be-lieve our definition of this sphere willbe allinclusive enough for their views.The spiritual, as we use it here, consistsof a discernment of a moral order, or aninner influence upon our character. Mendefine these tendencies as either: (a)The fiat of a personalized being: (b) Amanifestation of the higher order of

self; and (c) The more complex con-figurations of their beings, about whichthey resort to speculation.

Upon these broad definitions of thespiritual impulses, we find establishedtoday, first, orthodox religion.  It con-

tends that its interpretations are unaf-fected by human opinion or thought,and that they are, in fact, the absolutefiats of God. It further holds that allnonconformers  are heretics and anticredists. Some are often restrainedfrom a "devout” massacre of their op-ponents only by the latter’s superiornumber and strong organization underthe banner of liberty. Concomitant withthis orthodox religion is the everincreasing number who proclaim thatthe moral sense is an amorphous God orDivine Mind dwelling within man.

They further believe that an apprecia-tion of it is quite relative to one’s under-standing, requiring the development ofpersonal consciousness. This mystical conception, irreconcilable with orthodoxreligion, often unfortunately produces asmugness  among its adherents. Thatgroup who look upon spiritual ideals asgrowing out of obscure  sensations ofthe body compose the disciples of theschools and substance of psychology,and methods of physical philosophy.

What then does the future hold for  religion?  We predict a mysticalpanthe 

ism as the religion of tomorrow. Thecentral doctrine of this religion will bethat a Universal Intelligence as a seriesor concatenations of causes, creativeand perfect  in its whole, pervadeseverywhere and everything. Though itbe absolutely impersonal,  it provides inits perfection for a faculty in manthrough which he can draw upon it toprevent and remove any discordancewithin himself or the spheres of hislife’s activities. The creed of this re-ligion will expound that all things in es-sence will be united with man, and of

him, and he of all else. It will not alonebe a faith in the brotherhood of man,but a brotherhood of being.  It will alsoproclaim that man can be no closer tothis Universal Mind than what he cancome to self.  It will further teach thatif he finds himself in the shadows, itwill not be because he has been for-saken, is being punished, or must be re-deemed, but that intentionally or inad-

 vertently he has turned from the inner  light.  There will not be churches, buta church.  There will not be sects, butdegrees and grades of comprehension.From one to another will man advanceas he proves himself   competent. Nomen will have absolute comprehensionof this Universal Mind, for they wouldhave to be aware of all of those thingswhich it comprises. Likewise, therefore,no man will have a wrong conception ofit, for each state of consciousness willbe related to the individual's personalattainment.

 As to the next sphere, the funda-mental ailments of our present interna-tional political order are all too appar-ent. It is from a dispassionate survey ofthem we can realize the need andpredict the eventual remedy. Basically by na-ture and physiological structure, all hu-

manity is united as a species. The vari-ations of human conduct and the specialadjustments to social conditions shouldnot permit one body of men to band to-gether or organize as a political group,so as to exclude or to compel others toadopt their standards of living andform of Government. Such conduct inthe future will be considered striking atthe basic natural unity   of humanity.Thus the multiplicity of social states,countries, or nations will cease to be.With their disappearance will go thoseconflicts and misunderstandings which

are engendered by unnecessary rivalryfor supremacy and domination. Theworld will be redivided, not into politi-cal districts or states, but into  zones. Each zone will be determined by thephysical aspects of certain areas, thatis, its natural or geographical environ-ment and prevailing social and intel-lectual level of the populace. The zone,for example, of what is now Sekondi,Gold Coast, South Africa, will have nolower or higher status in this new poli-tical order than the present AtlanticSeaboard of the United States.

The people of each zone will be vest-ed with the right to elect a representa-tive who by examination proves  histhorough comprehension of the condi-tions of his zone and its people. Theserepresentatives will form a world con-gress, orCouncil.  This congress will inturn elect, for prescribed terms, theexecutive officers of the one United World State.  This world congress will

adopt a constitution which shall consistof such articles as will be for the preser- vation and furtherance of humanity’s in-alienable rights, which, of course, willnot conflict with the inherent differencesof the peoples of the various zones.There will be the further adoption of

laws for each zone, particularly to theirneeds as foreseen and recommended bytheir respective representatives, andconsistent with the spirit and purpose ofthe World Constitution.

The world population will be per-mitted to freely   migrate from zone tozone, as the temperaments, social in-clinations, and intellectual interests andpursuits of the people move them. Poli-tically, wherever they reside, they willbe taken and accepted as equal citizensof the United World State.  This willresult in a continual shifting of theworld population, as we now know it,but with one important difference;whereas now we have large congrega-tions of the people in various sections ofthe respective nations, in the futureWorld State, men and women will havethe whole earth as their stage and home,if they so desire, without the presentpolitical and national restrictions oftheir movements.

 As for the social  sphere, we predictthat the future society will decree thatsince theearth is a habitat of humanity,it also is the common property   of allmen. No man or group of men will bepermitted to lay claim to priority owner-ship of its rich and important areas orresources. Men will be allowed to oc-cupy a limited extent of land for homesites, for cultivation and for industrialor manufacturing production and cul-tural pursuits. No one will be able tooccupy land to the point of exclusivecontrol or monopoly of any natural re-sources, or so as to interfere with therights of others to also enjoy and oc-cupy land. Men will retain their posses-sory right  and control of those things

which they create from mind, or pro-duce, or derive from their personal laborand efforts, the restriction being thatthey do not conflict with the wealth andnatural resources which are and remainthe heritage of all humanity.

The system of jurisprudence will be-come completely reorganized, rathertranscend the present obnoxious imper-

fections. Judges of the Civil and Crim-inal courts of zones will be selected byexamination and unquestionable  quali-fications. Such qualifications will notmerely include a knowledge of the sci-ence and philosophy of law, but as wellas intellectual breadth, which comes

from a freedom from any allegianceswhich might bias a decision. Juries willlikewise be accepted by examination.The fallacy of the traditional belief oftheir peership will be abolished. Menmust see clearly eye for eye, before theyare qualified to think or judge alike.The prospective jurors' education, ex-perience, and ability to comprehend thesubject matter of the case will be de-termined in advance—assuring greaterequity to all litigants. Further improve-ment in the system of jurisprudence willbe the compulsory filing of a bond by a

plaintiff when he institutes an action.This bond, in a substantial amount willbe forfeited if certain required factualmatter has not been acquired in advanceof the filing of the suit as evidence ofthe plaintiff’s good faith. This willeliminate the legal extortion now inpractice, whereby suits are filed con-taining charges not possible of proof,under the sanction of the “informationand belief’’ clause, and for the sole pur-pose of attempting to coerce the defend-ant to settle outside of court to preventcontinued adverse publicity. Further

elaboration along this line of improve-ment will result in compelling suitswhich have once been filed to bebrought to trial, unless a judiciary bodydecides that a very good and sufficient reason  for not doing so has been estab-lished. This will discourage actionswhich are now filed solely for intimida-tion without merit and without the in-tent to bring them to trial.

The entire theory of what constitutesthe “freedom’’ of the press and its agen-cies will be revised. The present per-fidious freedom of the press will be re-stricted insofar as it amounts to anabuse, or is conceived as a mandate toexploit the reputations of peoples andinstitutions to advance its circulationfor pecuniary interests. The socalledfree speech of the press will be furthercurtailed where under the guise of stat-ing factual matters, unwarranted inuendoes are added, expressing the bias ofthe press, and given as “opinion” or

“news comments.” This reformation ofthe American Press, in particular, willbegin within the next decade.

The World State  will provide andmaintain community hospitals, sanitar-iums, and clinics for the care of the sickand injured. These hospitals will beprovided with capable staffs of physi-cians and technicians. Taxation will beadequate to meet the expense.  Physi-cians of all approved schools of thera-peutics will be paid by the state andtheir entire professional services will beabsorbed by the state. A graduatedscale of salaries will be paid them in ac-cordance with their experience andability.  Periodic tests of their efficiencywill be made, compelling them to keepabreast of the latest findings of theirparticular system or school of thera-

peutics. Genius or outstanding ability inthe healing professions, where one iscapable of contributing particularly tothe advancement of human welfare andthe alleviation of suffering and the com-batting of disease will be compensatedfor by bonuses and appointments tospecial research staffs of the WorldState. Every citizen will enjoy thesehealth benefits and guarantees, just ashe now does elementary public schooleducation in the United States, withoutdirect cost or expense to him.

In the sphere of education,  we willnot see the cessation of private univer-sities or colleges. Public universitiesand colleges will, however, be in-creased throughout the World State,for which no fees for attendance willbe required of the student. Strict entryexaminations, a rigid curriculum andstudy requirements will eliminate over-crowding in the fields of specialization.The World State Council or Congresswill compel vocational analysis,  whichwill be a highly developed and depend-able science, instead of the maladroitsystem now in use. No individual will

be permitted to study for a profession,who is not intellectually or tempera-mentally suited to it. To prevent over-crowding and consequent corruption,for which certain of our professions to-day are noted, quotas will be placedupon all professions in each of the zonesof the World State. Educational andvocational councils will continually de-

 velop and formulate new professions to

compensate for the control and restric-tion of others. Personal failures  in so-ciety will be reduced by the ingeniusmethod of free analysis of the psycho-logical disposition, inclinations andaptitudes of the person, which will re-

sult in “finding him,” when he cannotfind himself. When the cause of the in-dividual’s failure is found to be patho-logical, treatment will be conferred uponhim at the expense of the state, to con-

 vert him into an asset rather than a so-cial liability.

Forscience, we predict that the astro-nomical scale of distances will becomecompletely revolutionized, revealing er-rors in our present theory as glaring asthose in the long since abandonedPtolemaic cosmogony. The great tele-scopes with their costly, stupendous

lenses now used in astronomical ob-servations will come to appear as crudeinstruments, particularly because theentire principle upon which they areconstructed will be discarded. The mag-nification of objects by the use oflenses in astronomical telescopes in thegreat observatories will give way toa startling device employing electro-magnetic principles. This device willelectrically polarize wave bands of light,so that they have an electrical propertyand can thus be magnified as tremend-ously as we now amplify the electrical

impulses produced by sound wavesthrough presentday instruments. Vaststellar spaces will be reduced to thecapacity of human perception—a uni-

 verse now undreamed of, in compari-son to what we now can visually per-ceive will be disclosed to the knowledgeof man.

There will be instruments developedwhich will discover for man anothernatural, yet an almost dormant facultywhich will cause him to enjoy a percep-tion of existence not now imagined pos-sible for the human consciousness. This

new faculty of perception will revealintelligences existing elsewhere in the universe, which now we have no meansof discerning. If this seems fantastic,conceive our present human race with-out the faculty of hearing trying to be-come cognizant of a reality which wouldexist only as sound. Suddenly givenhearing, would not their realization  ofthe new realities be startling to them?

Our present method of obtainingenergy by the process of combustionor the transmuting of a bulk materialinto another manifestation will be-come obsolete. Man will not continuewith the masses of oil and coal as fuelto produce energy, but will have har-

nessed the energy in its formative oratomic state, with which he is now ex-perimenting, using the initial Cosmicenergy rather than that which escapesthrough combustion as we now know it.This, of course, will eliminate many ofthe present problems of which fuel isthe principal cause.

We predict that personal transporta-tion will not need to increase vastly be-

 yond what is now the maximum speedof air travel. A greater speed of per-sonal transportation will come to berivalled by a method which even in pre-diction appears weird.  A place or des-tination will become possible of projec-tion to man, instead of man being trans-ported to it. The combination of thephysical aspects of a place or its en-

 vironment will be so projected as to en-gender in man's consciousness thesame sensations which arise from thoseperceptual qualities when he experienceswhat he actually looks upon or hears inhis immediate surroundings. In otherwords man will be put en rapport witha place in space, without moving from his armchair . He will enjoy as complete

emotional and psychic response to theprojected impressions he receives as ifhis immediate surroundings had beentransformed into them. Not just one ortwo of his objective senses will be en-gaged, but all may be simultaneously, orat least the number necessary for thecomplete realization of the place orthing. This will not be done in a psy-chical or Divine sense, but by the meansof employing material instruments ofscience. What we now experience asradio and added to it what the imagina-tion can conceive as accurate color

television pictures can only provide uswith a very crude idea of this futuremiracle we now predict.

In the economic  sphere, we predictunemployment held at a constant pro-portionately low level. This will be ef-fected principally by the fact that menwill be able to gravitate to work of theirown ability and experience, anywhere

throughout the World State.  Men willnot be huddled behind nationalistic bar-riers or frontiers as now, if some plightbefall a particular zone or region inwhich they live. We further predict thatprices will be graduated to meet thepurchasing capacity of the peoples of

each zone of the World State. This willbe accomplished in the following man-ner. The people of a more affluent zonewill proportionately pay more for thesame commodities. The greater differ-ence as profit will be used to make upthe variation in increased productioncost of the same articles in different sec-tions of the World State. Consequent-ly, the average production cost of acommodity, taking into consideration itscost wherever it is produced, will be theone that will be established, eliminating the possibility that a producer whose

costs, because of matters beyond hiscontrol, would not, as now, be able tocompete with his product.

Working conditions will be establish-ed by a council of the World State,upon the recommendations of the rep-resentatives of the peoples of each zone,these recommendations to be foundedupon the varying conditions of the topo-graphy and geographical factors andtemperaments of the peoples of eachzone. There will be no limit placed uponthe personal acquisition of wealth; there

will be, however, a supervision of itscontrol and the manner of its applica-tion. Wealth, as we have heretoforepredicted, will be prohibited from pur-chasing the control of sources of natur-al resources, large tracts of land, andfrom holding in any manner what theWorld State and its citizenry need. Thepower of wealth will consist only in itsbeing put into circulation again throughproper and permitted purchases.

Begin today; look around you at the

world, and then with your impressionsand experiences in mind, resort to in-troversion. Look inwardly upon themirror of your own mind and see if youdo not find reflected there, from yourexperiences, the vision of tomorrow.  Be

 your own prophet — make your own prophecies.

HEOLOGIANSand philosophershave for centuriesattempted to con-strue positiveproofs for theexistence of a Su-preme Being, butonly four or fivesuch argumentshave receivedwide acceptance,and there is hard-ly a layman who

will not accept them as logical in reas-oning and true in conclusion. Even achild will advance the existence of God

by pointing to a tree and asking whomit was that created it. That would bethe argument from causality, or causeand effect; for if there is a cause, theremust be an effect, and vice versa. Andthe arguments from history and revela-tion, from teleology, and from univer-sal arrangement and order, are equallycogent and comprehensible. The reasonfor this wide acceptance lies in one fact:these proofs appeal to man’s experienceand reason combined. Each of them isestablished on the basis of objectivefacts with which man is familiar through

experience, for they point to the evi-dence and reason to the conclusion onthe basis of the evidence.

However, there is one argumentwhich has neither wide acquaintancenor has it wide acceptance in the circleswhere it has been introduced. Somehave regarded it as utterly absurd, andothers have rejected it merely becauseit is unintelligible to them. It is cen-

turies old and it has been heatedly de-bated in Scholastic spheres ever since Augustine introduced it. Yet, as an ex-periment in mental gymnastics, it hasfew equals; and, as an example of whatmen have attempted to do to establishpositive proof of a Supreme Being’sexistence, there is no argument to ex-ceed its brilliance, subtlety of thoughtand approach, and amazing appeal tothe mind alone. It is an excellent illus-tration of Aristotelian thinking, for it iswholly metaphysical in both attack andconclusion.

The “Argument” follows:(1) While it may appear arbitrary to

begin with definitions, the definitions

given are those necessary to an under-standing of the argument, and they areimplied not only in Scholastic philoso-phy but in many philosophic workswhenever the terms are employed.

Being—that which either exists or isapt to exist.

Existence—the actual presence of athing in the physical order.

(2) Since the argument is construedto establish the existence of a SupremeBeing, there is nothing more inevitablehere than a clarification of what a Su-preme Being is. A definition purports to

distinguish a subject from every othersubject, and it cannot be denied that thedefinition of a Supreme Being given inthis argument does not fulfill that quali-fication. A Supreme Being is an un-created and uncreatable subject. Thereis only one subject of which man wouldacknowledge such attributes, and thatsubject is God. If God were creatable,then the creature who was His creator

would be more powerful than He, andHe would not be God. If the SupremeBeing were uncreated. He would notexist, the reader will reason. But if theSupreme Being were created, then, aswas stated, He would not be God andHe would not be Supreme. For that

reason God has been termed eternal,and uncreated, and uncreatable.(3) Form the idea of an uncreated

and uncreatable being in your mind. Itis most essential to the argument’s clar-ity that this idea be firmly establishedin the mind before proceeding to thenext step.

(4) By forming this idea of a beingin your mind you have in mind an ob-

 ject which either exists or is apt to exist,for that is what a being is.

(5) With this idea of a being inmind, therefore, one note in your mindwith respect to this being is the note of 

existence, for an idea of a being in yourmind necessarily predicates the exist-ence of an idea of that being in yourmind. The moment the idea of a beingenters your mind you have conceived ofa thing which either exists or is apt toexist.

(6) But the being under discussionhere is either creatable or not creatable.That which is apt to exist is creatable,but the being aforementioned is notcreatable. Therefore it is not apt toexist.

(7) Yet it is a being.(8) Not being apt to exist, it must

exist. Since the being must be either ofthese two classifications, and since it isnot of the class “apt to exist" becauseit is not creatable, then it must belongto the class “existence."

(9)  Ergo, an uncreated and uncre-atable Being exists. That Being is God.

Many of the articles written by our late Imperator, Dr. H. Spencer Lewis, are asdeathless as time. OME years ago,

the subject of per-sonal magnetismwas given consid-erable thought andattention. Maga-zines and news-papers speculatedupon the subject,with various arti-cles, by variouswriters; manybooks and pam-phlets were put on

the market, claiming to deal with the

subject in a learned way, and instructthe aspiring student in its laws andprinciples.

Little understood, and seeming to re-fer to some strange quality, possessedby a “chosen” few, and mysterious inits potent ability to influence and attractothers who came within range of itssubtle power, personal magnetism be-came the tool of the charlatan, and theenvy of all who failed in life’s struggles.

Some of the more advanced thought

writers and lecturers claimed to know,and teach, the secret of the manner ofhow this silent Niagara of Power couldbe used to bring prosperity, health, andhappiness, but what little they did knowabout it was quickly realized, withoutrevealing any real laws and principles,and the seeker was left to deciphermany strange terms and phrases, andpractice foolish mental exercises; whichleft him stranded with blasted hopes.

But, in spite of the fact that verylittle was known of personal magnetismin those days, there is such a subtle

force radiating from the human body.This force may be truly termed “Per-sonal Magnetism,” because the modernmystic, in his scientific laboratory, hasproven that there is a magnetic fieldsurrounding the body, and that it existswithin the body and emanates there-from. It is in the human body becauseof the law which reveals itself in theexamination and study of any physical

mass which contains a magnetic qual-ity, or magnetism.

It is a wellknown fact, and proventhrough scientific experiments, that ablind person, walking along the street,or moving about in his home, does notdepend solely upon his touch to guide

him when approaching a wall, or otherobstacle, and he will also keenly ap-preciate the fact when in the presenceof another. It has been found, and sci-entifically proven, that the magneticaura extends so far in front of theirphysical bodies, that the blind, whosedelicate senses are strongly developed,can actually feel their magnetic aurastouching an obstacle long before theyreach and contact that obstacle withtheir physical bodies and senses. Deli-cate instruments have shown that theaura, emanating from the human body,

extends as far as ten feet and radiatesat least five feet in all directions. Just think of it from each human be-

ing there emanates radiations of a cer-tain force or energy, which extends atleast five feet, and as much as ten feetfrom the body. The question to be con-sidered is: “What is this aura, how doesit manifest, attract, repulse, and howmay it be controlled?” Before we mayanswer this question, it is necessary thatwe know something of the magneticfield in all things. Therefore, let ustake the electron—that as yet invisible

particle which science tells us composesthe atom, but of which they know solittle, and may only speculate upon, sofar as they have gone. The mystic,however, in his laboratory, has gonefarther than outside science and knowsa few things regarding the electron.

Let us say, then, that an electron isthe smallest particle entering into thecomposition of matter; in the electronwe find that there are dual forces atwork, and these forces are the positiveand negative forces, the same as in anycreative cell. Now the vibrations which

emanate from any mass of matter, con- vey the quality of radiation accordingto the nature of the predominating forcewithin the mass. Thus, whatever qual-ity is sent out from the mass, eitherpositive or negative, that quality be-comes what is known as “polarity” andthe mass is said to be of a positivepolarity or of a negative polarity. Now,any mass of matter radiates either a

positive or negative force and thus isone or the other of the two polarities.The vibrations emanating from matterare positive or negative vibrations andare governed in their polarity by thegoverning nature, or quality, of theforces within the combined electrons

which make up the atoms in any massof gross matter. Thus, do we see thatthe positive or negative forces within theelectrons are not equal, but that one orthe other predominates and determinesthe polarity. And so, the vibrations,emanating from any form of matter,have a magnetic influence upon all otherforms of matter, and will be attractedto, or repulsed by other matter, in ac-cordance with the law of polarities, thepositive attracting the negative and re-pulsing the positive and vice versa.

In the ordinary horseshoe, or other

permanent magnet, we also find a goodillustration of the attractive force, ormagnetism which emanates from the vi-brations of a piece of iron. Extendingfrom such magnets, for a short distance,is that field or area wherein magneticattraction will occur. You have probablytried experiments with magnets yourselfand have seen how the magnet willcause a needle or other pieces of iron, orsteel, to jump up and become attachedto one of the poles of the magnet assoon as the magnet is brought nearenough to the needle to affect it with

the magnetic aura; as soon as the needleenters the zone, or field of attraction, itcannot resist the force and will immedi-ately be attracted to the magnet's poleand remain there until pulled away.

Now the magnetism which emanatesfrom the human body is truly magneticin the same sense as is the magnetism ofthe ordinary magnet, but the term“magnetism” as applied to the humanbody, is used in connection with physi-cal forces or energies within the bodythat are dual, in nature, consisting ofthe two opposites of energy, or vitalism,

blended by their attraction for eachother. This energy, or vitalism, or mag-netism, surrounds the human body be-cause it emanates from the two oppositeenergies in the human body and thusderives its essence. And so, the vitalforce, that is to say, the life force, whichis associated with, and controlled by themind of the soul in man, blends with thephysical, material, bodily energies to

create this magnetic aura, and this aurais of a positive or negative polarity, ac-cording to the nature of the predomi-nating polarity causing its makeup.Thus is a person said to be positive ornegative.

Under certain circumstances, the auramay be perceived with the naked eye.Those who see it most readily are clair-

 voyants, but when certain physical con-ditions are brought into use, eitherthrough natural or scientific causes orconditions, most anyone may perceivethe human aura. Thus it is that "per-sonal magnetism” is no longer the un-seen, mysterious force — the intangiblething it was some years ago, for it maynow be seen, measured, felt, deflected,reflected, weighed, neutralized, increas-ed, decreased, and otherwise affected

mechanically and by use of the humanWill. And here we come to find is the great

secret which so many teachers and in- vestigators failed to discover, in theearlier days of the history of "personalmagnetism.” It is that the HUMANWILL — that strange, directive, con-trolling, determining power — alwaysat the command of the human intellect—CAN ACTUALLY—not theoretically—CONTROL AND EFFECT THERADIATING VIBRATIONS CALL-ED PERSONAL MAGNETISM.

What then is this personal magne-tism? It must be associated directlywith, or be under the supervision of themind, or intellect. It must also be asso-ciated with the vital energy of the hu-man body, for we find the magneticradiations from the human body (theaura) affected by the standard orstrength of the vital force in the body,fluctuating and vascillating as the vital-ity of the body changes.

In simple words, we must look to themind, which is an attribute of the soul,for the secret of and key to personal

magnetism, because the mind and vitallife force are related, and life is underthe direct control of the mind, so far as"life” itself, and not the body, isconcerned.

 And how does the aura of a personlook, when seen under proper condi-tions? The aura RADIATES and mani-fests in color vibrations. IE you couldsee the emanations of the vibrationsconstituting the aura surrounding the

human body, you would see variouscolors, in different shades and blends,each one of which signifies a certainphysical or mental condition ar ex-pressed inwardly and reflected outward-ly, and this reflection, reflecting out-

wardly through vibrations, form theaura, and this aura is really the outerexpression of the personality of thesoul’s develeopment, making up what iscommonly termed "personality.”

 And there you have it: A MagneticPersonality, or Personal Magnetism.

Let us now make an examination andanalysis of magnetic personality, so thatwe may arrive at a conclusion regard-ing the gualities, conditions, or natureof it. If we can note any distinctionfrom such observation, or comparison,let us do so, and analyze it thoroughly.

The first observation we make is tobe found in the child. Why is it thatchildren are so wonderfully attractive toevery human being? What qualities orexpressions do we find in the child?Upon going into these questions wefind: a, simplicity; b, innocence; c, pur-ity of mind; d, sincerity; e, enthusiasm;f, trust; g, absolute faith; h, apprecia-tion; i, imagination; j, lack of doubt;k, joyousness of living; 1, vitality; m,ready forgiveness; n, love of all things.

Now then: If the mind directly affects,or controls, the vital life force, and the

magnetic aura, what do you supposewould be the nature, or expression of achild possessing the qualities namedabove? And nearly every child betweenthe age of two and six possesses all ofthem. Can you not see then the causefor the attraction of all kinds of peopleto the personality of the child? Therewe find certain states of CONSCIOUS-NESS which produce definite effects sofar as the auras are concerned. This isso because the child has not as yet con-tacted the world sufficiently to affect itsoutlook upon life and things, in general.

 As the child grows older, it contactsmore and more of world life and condi-tions with the effect that it grows ac-customed to conventionalities, and opin-ions, and so forth. Such things as theseaffect the simple childconsciousness andchanges it; doubt creeps in, worry be-gins to make itself felt; fear of certainpeople and things is brought about, andin view of all this, the child no longerexpresses in and through simplicity of

mind, but is influenced and affected byits surroundings.

Let us refer to another type. Thereare many people who are very beautifulin features, but whose personality, ormagnetism, is limited, or lacking, so tospeak. D. W. Griffith, the motion pic-

ture director, stated in an interview thatthe manner in which he chose people forhis stars, on the screen, was by lookingfor the inner light of the applicant. Bythis he meant that he looked for acertain expression, or manifestation,of personality which indicated that,through experience, development or unfoldment, a real soul personality wasexpressing before him; this he calledthe inner light, and it is his supremetest to determine whether or not theapplicant would be able to fill the part.

Let us now consider two distinct anddifferent types of personality. In thefirst we will say the person possessesgreat energy and this means health,strength, power, enthusiasm, activity,and love of life. He desires nothing buthappiness out of life and strives to doeverything that will make for a con-tinued existence of happiness. By think-ing properly he raises his degree ofmagnetism in positive polarity and thusradiates a powerful positive aura. Ifsuch a person were to stand ten or fif-teen feet away from you, you would beunconsciously impelled to turn aroundand notice him. His radiant magneticaura, or soul vibrations, would attract

 you strongly. You would, perhaps,mentally tell yourself that here was aman who was “big."

On the other hand, we will take aman who is weak, physically and men-tally. Not so much so as to be a mentaldefective, but just enough as to causehim to lack ambition, enthusiasm, activ-ity, health, strength, and desire to makeof himself the highest possible type ofman. Here, then, would we find a manunnoticed; a man whose aura would bebut very faint and extending not more

than a few inches from his body. Hewould be a man who did very little ofhis own thinking, holding thoughts ofhatred and revenge against those whoprevented him from carrying out hiswill, or who opposed his views; hewould be a man bound down by thechains of bigotry, and one who wouldbe very hard to acknowledge he was

wrong in a thing, even though the mostpositive proof was brought to bear uponthat view. Such a man would radiatean aura of a negative polarity so weakas to almost be absolutely neutral. Hewould have very few real friends, ifany, and would amount to a burden

upon his own family.Make note of the difference betweenthese two types and therein you willfind the secret, the secret of the state ofconsciousness that causes us to possessthe personal magnetim we have beenseeking all the time. Remember that itis the soul and mind, or consciousnessof man that ULTIMATELY determinesthe quality of his aura and magneticattraction.

If everyone’s soul were permitted,from childhood, to give its expression ofperfection in all thought and activity,

then each of us would be expressing thehighest possible form of magnetic at-traction. Why? Because MAN ISLIKE A SUN, and man, naturally,should be living perfectly—should be aliving fire, or force of sunshine andLove. Why then is he not magnetic?Simply because man, as a rule, is farbelow the normal standard of what manshould be. His life and thinking andexpression is ABNORMAL, because heis lacking in those vital elements ofsoul, and consciousness, which go tomake a perfect life, and radiate the ac-tivities of love and happiness. Wherelove is lacking in the heart of a humanbeing, everything vital to life is lacking, just as the plant could not exist were itnot nourished by the loving power ofthe sun’s rays.

Man's soul WANTS to express itsDivine qualities on earth, and thesequalities may be summed up in oneword—LOVE. The complete love ofthe soul, which brings out all its beauty,perfection, wisdom, and glory, makesman what his God intended he shouldbe—the Image of Himself. Man. withhis finite, objective, limited, understand-

ing, has divided the quality of DivineLove into words, ideas, and fancies, butfor all of that, the Divinity of Love re-mains unchanged and will express itselfwhenever man allows his objective selfto be put aside and thus cannot inter-fere with the Divine expression. Whatman calls kindness, patience, sincerity,truth, humility, goodness, sympathy,

understanding, appreciation, recognitionand forgiveness, are but phases of   theone and the same thing called DivineLove.

Can it be possible for one to change

his polarity From negative to positiveand thus acquire a strong, attractive,personal magnetism? Yes, certainly!One has but to polarize himself to thepositive force by raising his conscious-ness through thoughts of love and allthat is contained and meant by thatword—to live in peace with himself andthe world about him, to do his levelbest to be a credit to the world, to en-deavor to be above such petty things ashatred, jealousy, vanity, conceit, and toallow the Divine Love within him to ex-press outwardly. It is the easiest thingin the world to do this if you will butmake the conscious effort to do it andcontinue to do it in spite of the first fewfailures. We have all become enslavedby wrong thinking, and we must breakthe chains that bind us by changing theprocess of thinking and raising ourthoughts to higher and more idealthings.

 And so, if you wish to live the radiantlife—full of vitality (activity, joy, andlove), you must first remove from yourconsciousness all forms of destructivethinking and allow your soul, your realself, to express its perfection and reflect 

its magnetic strength and power. Thenwill others recognize and appreciate youfor you will become a power in theworld for the betterment of all human-ity and to the glory of God.

It is well known to the mystics thatGod has given man all the strength andpower to help himself toward higherthings. Certainly this is true, and everyperson on earth who is in possession ofordinary mental ability can clothe him-self with a radiant, magnetic personal-ity. You have the power to do this, but

 you must make the effort to do it. Justas the electric dynamo is capable of pro-ducing the power to create light, andpower, but cannot do this until it hasreceived the driving power to set it inmotion, so you, too, possess the abilityto raise yourself and become whatever

 you will, but not until you set that pow-er in motion and make the conscious ef-fort to keep it going.

God cannot and will not help anyone

who will not make the conscious effortto help himself. But, when you do makethe effort and are doing your level best—and remember that your “best” isbetter than you have ever done — thenwill help be given you to continue alongthe path, for with the effort and con-tinued effort you make, your soul willgradually be freed from the shacklesthat now bind it to the false conceptionsand begin to express freely and perfect-ly, drawing from the infinite source ofpower for all it needs and requires tokeep going, producing and creating thepower you require. May you make theeffort and reap the reward of DivineLove which brings to the soul PeaceProfound.

WHO WAS NOSTRADAMUS?

Science has never discovered new laws. However, each hour its ardent workers bring forth new demonstrations of the eternal Cosm ic principles. Many of these daily scientific discoveries are but confirmations of secret doctrines expounded for centuries by the Rosicrucians and other mystery schools— at a time when popular acceptance of them was impossible. “Far from being absurd, these arelegitimate questions for the layman toask. Dr. William S. McEllroy, dean of

Pitt’s Medical School, shows no impa-tience despite the number of times hehas answered them since the announce-ment of Mrs. Scaife’s gift in January.

 New Substances

“ ‘The atom smasher,’ he says, ‘is anew instrument that breaks down par-ticles of matter and in so doing, createsa new substance with remarkable prop-erties, and almost unlimited opportuni-ties for medical research. The cyclotronmay have even greater possibilities thanthe Xray tube that was first developed

about 40 years ago!“The cyclotron serves medical re-search in two ways, he explains.

“ ‘Large quantities of the new sub-stance can be used for the treatment ofdisease. Then, small quantities canserve as methods of investigation. Theycan be “tagged,” so to speak, markedand identified and so, used as traces inbody processes. This, in itself, is one ofthe most striking developments in mod-ern science. It is possible through theperfection of a new instrument calledthe Geiger Muller counter.

“ ‘Through the “counter” one can tellwhen any phosphorous compound reach-es the teeth, the bones, the hair, or anyother part of the body,’ he explains.‘One is thus able to observe the part theatoms play in the complicated labora-tory called the human body and inhealth as well as in disease.’

“The new cyclotron can also be ap-plied to research in physics and in

chemistry. Dr. Elmer Hutchisson, headof Pitt’s Physics Department, believes ithas almost unlimited scope in his field.He says:

“ ‘Ever since Pierre and Marie Curiediscovered radium, scientists have beentrying to bring its radioactivity under

control. Intense light and heat andstrong magnetic and electric fields, pow-erful acids and alkalis were tried. Andall to no avail. The radium tricked mer-rily on emitting its ionizing particles, nofaster and no slower.

Deep In Atom

“ ‘Out of the experiments, however,one fact became evident. The radio-activity of an element is not a surfaceeffect that can be easily changed but adisintegration that takes place deepdown in the interior of the atom. It

soon became clear that the radioactivityof an atom was to produce particlesmoving so fast that a collision wouldcause, literally, an atomic smashup.’

“That is exactly what the cyclotrondoes. Since the atom is so small that ittakes two million of them to cover thediameter of the dot of the letter ‘i\ the job of building a machine to breakatoms seemed as fantastic as the al-chemists’ attempt to manufacture gold.But science’s patient methods found theway.

“The cyclotron already has proven of

great value in the study of chemistry,according to Dr. Charles Glen King,Professor of Chemistry at Pitt. He says:

“ ‘Chemistry will gain immeasurablyas a science by advances being made indetailed  knowledge concerning atomicstructure because such information pro- vides the fundamental basis for un-

derstanding and predicting chemicalchanges. Even freshman and sopho-more courses are taught more effectivelywhen based on modern theories ofatomic structure.’

“Nearly every branch of the sciencehas already profited by the use of radio-

active elements, Dr. King says, and this,despite the fact that they are too newfor full realization of their use.

Wins Nobel Prize

“The cyclotron was developed at theUniversity of California by Dr. E. O.Lawrence, winner of the Nobel Prize inPhysics in 1939. Another type of atomsmasher, not a cyclotron, was producedby Robert J. Van de Graaff and reachedits maximum in one built in the Westinghouse Research Laboratories underthe direction of Dr. Edward U. Condon,advisory professor of physics at Pitt.

“The cyclotron employs a giant elec-tro magnet. The one to be installedhere will weigh seventy tons in iron and30,000 pounds in copper. Between itstwo poles is a vacuum chamber. A short-wave radio transmitter applied to thechamber will make the ions or chargedatoms spin as if hit by millions of volts.

“The ions spiral and acquire speed.Thus the name cyclotron. They travelin circular paths or cycles.

“The new machine will be installedunder the direction of Dr. Alexander J. Allen, associate professor of physics at

the university. To protect its operatorsand those in the vicinty, it will be buriedfive feet in the ground. Before it willstand a wall of water four feet thick, forthe powerful giant can be destructive aswell as beneficial.

“But the cyclotron undeniably makesfor better living.”

Respected Members and Friends:Medieval religious fanatics slew her-

etics by  fire,  to elude the maxim:“Ecclesia non novit sanguinem;” forburning a man, they said, does not shed his blood.

 Also in the design of an old tapestry,we are told, William the Conqueror isrepresented with amace in his hand, forthe purpose that when hedispatched hisantagonist he might not spill blood, butonly break his bones! Today in ourTwentieth Century, still more refined and genteel ways have been developedfor scourging a victim, without breakinghis bones or shedding his blood. At-tempts may be made to tear his reputa-tion to shreds, to denude him of hischaracter, and to expose him to publicridicule and contempt. These moderninstruments of torture are not the rack or the stake, but mendacious, calumniousstatements clothed and permitted in the verbiage of a legal complaint — whichmay be filed against anyone.

Within the last three weeks, I haveexperienced the effect of one of theseinstruments. I have become the inno-cent victim of a vile attack, as a lawsuit,not alone upon my integrity and mymorals, but also upon my lineal ancestry.The absolutely false allegations, notalone by their wording, tend to blackenmy character, but by implication, theRosicrucian Order and my family aswell. The suit was filed by a youngwoman who herself admits she was forsometime an inmate of a CaliforniaState

institution for the insane. Toward her,we of course must extend sympathy,not ill feeling. To the best of my knowl-edge, I met this young woman once  inmy life, at a five-minute formal  inter-

 view, during the 1934 Rosicrucian Con- vention—an interview similar to thatwhich it is our custom to give to allConvention visitors and delegates. Sub-sequently, she began a series of irration-al correspondence to myself and others.In the Fall of 1934 she threatened,through a Los Angeles attorney, an ac-tion somewhat similar to the one she re-cently filed, which allegations wereequally devoid of fact or truth. My at-torney, Mr. C. C. Cottrell, likewise theattorney for AMORC, and a member ofa prominent legal firm, wrote her inreply, through her attorney, in Novem-ber, 1934, as follows:

“We are at a loss to understand thebasis of this demand upon the part of Jeannette Young. Mr. Lewis has neverat any time accompanied the young ladyany place, has never written her anypersonal letters, has never sent her anygifts and has not, either in letters or inconversation, ever discussed any mattersof a personal nature with her. All cor-

respondence that he has had with herhas been in his official capacity as Su-preme Secretary of the RosicrucianOrder. Any information you may havecontrary to what is stated in this lettermust either be the figment of someone’simagination or a deliberately built upplot to collect money.

“You may inform her, therefore, thatMr. Lewis will uncompromisingly resist

any attempt to extort money from himand will take steps to protect his goodname and standing from an unwarrant-ed attack of this nature."

Nothing further was heard of the young woman until I was informed that

she had been committed, not  to aprivate institution, but a state, a public institution for the mentally afflicted.Exactly on what grounds, or why shewas committed, I was not aware, norwas it any concern of mine. About four years ago, she was evidently released,for she began a periodic harassment ofmyself, by letters in which she again in-dulged fanciful and imagined wrongs.She finally has induced certain Los Angeles attorneys to file the presentsuit, which complaint is a congeries ofscurrilous prevarications. The preposter-

ous sum of damages asked would causea question to arise as to the motive ofthe action.

The following is an example of thefalsity of the charges, to quote from oneof the allegations from the complaint onfile: “. . . . that the defendant, RalphMaxwell Lewis, left the State of Cali-fornia on or about the first day of Feb-ruary, 1935, and resided in the State ofNew York, and did not return to theState of California until on or about the25th day of December, 1940." It is a

 verifiable and simply known fact to

thousands of Rosicrucians and otherpersons that not only has my residencebeen established all of the aforesaid years in California, but that I have beenactually residing  in California duringthe period mentioned. Several thousandsof Rosicrucian members during these

 years have heard me speak from theplatform of our Francis Bacon Audi-torium here in Rosicrucian Park, in San Jose at annual Rosicrucian Cenventions. An equal number have met me at otherperiods of the same years in California.

Perhaps one of the most malicious

charges is that which impugns my race—in which the unfortunate young wom-an claims that she "discovered" that Iwas not of the Caucasian race. Theterm Caucasian today has more of aphilogical than an ethnological meaning.In other words, the term is generallyapplied by scholars to the languagesused on the Caucasian Isthmus. Modernanthropologists consider the Caucasiansto include the whites  of Europe, the

brown races of Asia, North Africa, and Australia, and some of the blackest ofthe African tribes; consequently, inpresentday scientific circles, Caucasianhas no reference to color, but rather tothe type and kind of hair.  However, 

among laymen and the general public,the term Caucasian is so taken and ac-cepted as to mean the white race. Therefore, the accusation that I am notof the white race would besmirch mylineal ancestry, not because of color, butby implying racial mixture, a charge ob- viously damaging to anyone’s socialstatus.

This and each of the allegations willnot only be categorically denied by me,but will be proven to be false, for I shallvigorously  oppose this attack, until I amfully vindicated through the channels

of the courts of the land, if need be.The complaint further charges that I,as Imperator, with certain agents and/ orofficers of the Rosicrucian Order, con-spired to have a "perjured affidavit"filed, committing this young woman tothe State institution. I have not met,nor do I know the party who was in-strumental in filing the original com-plaint, which resulted in this youngwoman’s being committed to a State mental institution, after due order  by aCourt of law of Los Angeles, California.However, a startling revelation  is the

fact that after being confined in theCalifornia State Institution at Norwalkfor several days, during the latter partof December 1934, she was released bya Court Order, for the purpose of re-ceiving a jury trial as to her sanity.Then this young woman, who nowclaims in her complaint to have been atall times sane, rational, and of normalmind, in a prepared and personally  signed  statement, waived her furtherright to demand a jury trial, and still,most amazing, further stated: ". . . . amsatisfied to go to a state hospital andhave my case finally decided by the staffthere.” Is it not strange that a personwho considered herself normal  wouldwaive her right to a jury trial as to hersanity, and ask to be recommitted  to astate hospital for the insane? personally signed request by this youngwoman, filed one day later than theabove, and addressed to the  Lunacy  Commission,  stating: “I request that Ibe returned to the Norwalk State Hos-pital today on my original commitment.”I leave it to the intelligence of my read-

ers to decide if it does not seem very  strange for one who now claims, throughattorneys, to have been wrongly incar-cerated in a mental institution—an in-stitution of the state and not a privatehospital—when given an opportunity ofa jury trial as to her sanity, to waive that right  and voluntarily ask to be recommitted.  Do ordinary men andwomen ask to be committed to mentalinstitutions?

These documents published else-where in this issue, are photostaticcopies of originals on file in the officialrecords of the County Clerk of theCounty of Los Angeles, and may be seen or inspected there — they are theproperty and record of the County. Youwill observe that each document bearsthe date of filing, the county clerk'sname, and the signature of his deputy.In addition, document Number Onebears the signature of a witness, at thetime of its signing. Other evidence,equally effective, is at our disposal forthe defense of the reputation of our  beloved Order and of myself, if andwhen this matter shall come to Court.

Why the tremendous publicity which it has received?   First, it is a tribute tothe extent to which AMORC is knownand the reputation it has  always en- joyed throughout North and South America. That a watch dog will bite isno news. That a good man is imbuedwith virtues is also no news. Let thewatch dog lick an intruder’s hand, orthe good man display an unknown

 vice, and such a contrariety is news.  AMORC’s high moral and ethical prin-ciples, not alone expounded in its teach-ings and literature, but exemplified inthe lives of thousands of its membersand its officers, is generally known.Such is not news.  Any acts which con-firm such principles of conduct havelittle or no news value. Let the Orderor its officers be accused, charged withthat which is contrary  to its stated pur-poses and customary activities, and you have sensational news.

The second reason for the publicityis the vaunted  freedom of the press. The press is free to publish any chargewhich is legally filed as a complaintagainst anyone. It is not obliged towait until the conclusion of a trial.It is not obliged to investigate, inorder to determine whether the chargesmay possibly be filed merely to createadverse publicity.  It is not obliged todetermine whether the charges contain-ed  one iota of fact or truth. It is noteven obliged to interview the one ac-cused,  to gain his statements or wordof defense. You will recall that not onesingle statement of mine appeared inmost all of the news articles appertain-ing to the suit—why? Because the newswire services took the charges verbatim,as they appeared in the complaint filed,without troubling  to interview me, or

even to obtain a defense statement fromme. The freedom  of the press relievesthem from the responsibility of a libel action, when the charges are containedin a legal complaint filed, and whichcomplaint may be filed against anyone— even you. This same freedom permitsthe press to publish a story in a wide-spread manner, no matter how damagingit may be, without concern for the ef-fect it my produce upon the reputationof an individual or an organization, if itis taken from a complaint, and a one-sided story   at that, if it so desires, as

was this one. AMORC never has, andnever wall resort to the unsatisfactory,sordid, lurid, and sensational method oftrying its cases or seeking to make itsdefense by resorting to newspapercanards.  We still cling to the belief, asan organization and as individuals, thatsuch freedom which the press of Ameri-ca enjoys should not be at the expenseof justice and fair play, which are asmuch American virtues and rights asfreedom.

Fortunately the courts of law of ourgreat nation and the intelligent populacehave advanced beyond the medievalprecept and practice that “he whostands accused is guilty.” The latter, asdo the men and women of our belovedOrder (who, by the hundreds, are writ-ing, telephoning, and telegraphing wordsof confidence and loyalty) await a de-fense, and hold no one guilty who hasnot been so proven after a fair trial. personally shall not evade what furtherassaults may be attempted on my char-acter because of the prominence of myoffice or this display of righteous in-dignation. I have assumed the mantleof Imperator, and I shall not desecrate

it by monetary settlement,  or any formof compromise with injustice.Those who believe that in this ill

fated hour, a devastating blow has beenstruck from which AMORC may notrecover, are short on memory of pastevents. Time after time the RosicrucianOrder, AMORC, and its personnel hereand abroad, have withstood assaultscalculated or conceived to be devasta-ting. Those who rejoice in destructionor wish for the cessation of our activi-ties fail to rightly evaluate certain hu-man qualities out of which the fabric of

the Rosicrucian Order is woven. Trueloyalty, sympathetic understanding, andsacrifice  for a cause, are elements ofcharacter not shattered by unfair blows.Rather, agitation stirs deeply the poolsof emotion in which they germinate,and they rise like intoxicating vapors tostimulate the human consciousness tothat keener sensitivity from whichcomes the needed perception of right-eousness. Thus the spirit of justice isalways strongest when injustice is in

evidence. The virtue of courage standsmost revealed where the greatest dan-ger prevails. The determination of Rosicrucians has always been united by theexternal pressure of adversity. Thefacts of profane history and the ar-

chives of the Order attest to that.I am eternally grateful for the faithRosicrucian members and friends of theOrder have expressed in me. I shalladvise each of you as to the eventualoutcome, the vindication which shall be mine and which shall be supported withirrefutable evidence. It has been deemedby powers beyond our full cognizance,apparently, that I shall be honored withpersecution and vilification, which wasthe lot of our late Imperator, Dr. H.Spencer Lewis, and that great assemblyof exponents of Rosicrucianism before

him, each of whom has subsequentlycome to be endeared to the vast Rosi-crucian membership and to humanity.There is a scale of Cosmic justice whichtime tends and which outweighs anynumber of the machinations, plots, andschemes of men.

USIC, the unworded language, has had so many varied definitions: theemotion of numbers—the architecture of sound—emotion and beauty ex-pressed in essence—love in search of a word—at least, Music is of Love,and is a vibration that can arouse an inner stirring in the meanest.

Music consists of vibration in air, in orderly  waves. That distinguishesit from the chaotic clang.

The musical note is a tonic with certain overtones, leaving out, not al-lowing or causing extraneous soundvibrations to exist in its field. Its quality ofrestraint is the cause of its harmoniousness, and of its ability to blend variouslywith others of its kind. It is important for all of us to learn that art, since to makethe best use of the infinity of possibility within us, we must be able to leave out ofour actions that which is best lacking, in keeping with the instance.

Love is even so; with infinity within itself, but manifesting only that which isbest manifested.

 An Etiology of Imponderable ForcesBy Car l  Tho mas

E would have you

recognize, withoutfurther attempt toadduce logicalproof, that theforce that germi-nates a seed plant-ed in the earth,and the force thatkeeps the earth inits orbit, and theforce that makes aman love a woman,all are only differ-

ent manifestations—of one identical, im-ponderable Force. This Force is thedynamic, galvanic inner nature, the cen-ter and circumference, the beginningand the end, of every separate thing,and of the universe as a whole. It isperceivable in every blind act of nature,and in every deliberative, discriminativeact of man; and the great distinguishingdifference between the two is this dis-criminatory action. Too often we re-fuse to avail ourselves of this great gift,and fall to the level of the animal king-dom where purely vegetative existenceprevails.

 At first glance it would seem that the

First Force is electrical in nature. Askalmost any man to name the only abso-lute force and he will at once say elec-tricity. Every form of materiality isknown to possess an electromagneticfield. Every time we move, or eventhink, a certain amount of electricity inone form or another is utilized or ex-pended. Thought, or rather the fact of 

thought, has been discovered to be a

definite, measurable thing of an electri-cal nature manifesting in what is calledthe Bergen rhythm. This rhythm is adetectable cyclic electrical current thatis shown to become stronger or weakerwith the intensity or lack of intensity ofthought being generated by the subjectbeing tested. All of the chemical changesthat occur within the body are accom-panied by a discharge of electrical ener-gy. An ordinary galvanometer will de-tect an electrical current in any form ofplant or mineral life; even the earth it-self has been shown to be a giganticmagnet. Every atom is nothing morethan a unit of electricty. Every form ofmatter tends naturally to some finerphase of matter; thus, in spite of any-thing we can do to the contrary, ice hasa tendency to become water, water hasa tendency to become steam, and steampasses through four refining steps till itreaches that absolute force we callelectricity.

We might ask here if this electricityreally is the irreducible Force. If this istrue, all matter and all sentient beingmust exist in and through it; and we,that is, the KnowingSelf, must possess

and perceive it. And if this force is notto be a mere shadow, it must not becapable of being referred to some Forcewhich does not have a relative existence,but which is independent of all otherforce.

If electricity is a shadow, it must beexplained through a consideration oftime and space; conversely, if electricity

is the absolute force that is sometimesclaimed for it, it is not dependent upontime and space, cannot be referred totime and space, nor be explained throughthe laws of time and space. In otherwords, if electricity is force as Force, 

it is a feature of every known thing orcondition, and is provable just as read-ily, whether we reason inductively ordeductively. But electricity occupies theunique position of partaking of both ofthese conditions. All of the forms ofelectricity that come with our range ofperception are perceived only throughtime and space. On the other hand, allof the forms of electricity only prove anunderlying relation of all things; that is,all things contain something we call elec-tricity which is not exhaustively knowable, which is not completely explain-

able by reference to something else,something which if we attempt to definelucidly our definition reaches the pointwhere it is no longer completely lucid.The fact that electricity is an unknownquantity, if that fact is considered alone,would lead us to say that it is the abso-lute Force we are searching for. But anetiology of physics and electricity re-duces all things to blind, materialisticmechanism, which denies certain basicfacts that we cannot fail to take intoconsideration. It denies the undeniablefact of a vital Creative Force, which is

manifest in all things. A Creative Forcemust be an Intelligent Creative Force ifit is truly creative, for the fact of crea-tion itself directly implies the fact of in-telligence. Wherever one can point outan example of creation there is alwaysdiscernable an accompanying GuidingHand. And an etiology that reduces allthings to electricity in the guise of posi-tion, form, or motion does not admit ofsuch a thing as intelligence.

Intelligent Creative Force adequatelyovercomes the anomalies of electricityand fulfills our conditions for an abso-lute force. Every individual cell ofmatter displays a conscious intelligence.There are apparent exceptions to this,for intelligent action implies beneficentaction, and there are many things thatare not beneficent in any sense of theword. What of the men being blown tobits this very moment? What of thosesuffering from disease of one sort or an-other? What of the vast destructionwrought by such things as floods? These

apparent exceptions are only apparent.Dynamite is a result of Intelligent Crea-tive Force, but war and all it impliescannot be blamed on dynamite. Diseaseis a result of interference with the Crea-tive Force, not an example or exception

of Creative Force. And if man had notremoved the trees from the land, placedthere by the action of an IntelligentCreative Force, the floods would neverhave happened. All of the manifesta-tions of Creative Force work in thesame way every time; that is, CreativeForce is objectively perceived and cata-logued as natural law, which is an inerrant proposition. So long as this Forceis allowed to operate unhindered, in aperfectly smooth manner, there is mademanifest a peaceful, concordant, har-monious condition. But if this Force is

opposed or disrupted a destructivecourse will be taken, until the CreativeForce ceases to be interrupted. Wehave all seen how a tiny seedling sprout-ing from a crack in a huge rock will intime split the rock; however, as soon asthe seedling reaches its full growth, oras soon as the manifestation of CreativeForce in the seedling reaches the pointwhere it is no longer opposed by therock, the destruction of the rock stops,and the scales of rock that have beenbroken off from the larger mass have inthe meantime been washed down into

the valley where the Intelligent CreativeForce has transformed them into rich,fertile soil. All of the apparent differ-ences of force that we perceive aroundus are due to an insight into and dis-criminated interpretation of some givenforce and its relation to all other inter-pretations of force.

If Creative Force is the absolute forcethat we say it is, it transcends the lawsof time and space. *“The phenomena ofpolarization show that light is a trans- verse wave. But while light and thealternating current are waves, they are

not wave motions. They arise as proper-ties of an energy field in space. Ob-

 viously, then, by carrying the explana-tion of light and electromagetic wavesback to the energy field we have carriedit back as far as possible." in matter; in other words, this energyfield is shown to be an immaterial thingbecause it exists outside of the laws oftime and space, and what is the differ-ence whether we name it an energyfield, an Intelligent Creative Force, orGod? All ancient and modern records

agree that the Creative Force antedatesall other things, and in fact all otherthings originate in it. From it arises life,mind, all the senses, ether, air, fire,water, earth. The fact that KnowingSelf confirms these records is significantindeed, for the KnowingSelf is a directextension of the Creative Force. An-other significant factor is that the nearerwe approach to an exhaustive explana-tion or investigation of the CreativeForce, the more subjective or abstractour explanation becomes; that is, themore there is in our investigation of

Creative Force that lacks objective con-tent or perception in terms of mass,time, and space, the clearer and moresufficing our investigation becomes. Forif Creative Force is inexplicable fromsome other thing, it is clearly more near-ly a pure subjective force than a pureobjective force.

The findings of geology and ethnol-ogy indicate beyond a doubt that anorderly plan of evolution is beingworked out under the direction of theIntelligent Creative Force. As has al-ready been pointed out, it is not pos-

sible for us to become directly awareof the Creative Force. This Force as-sumes certain forms within certain per-ceivable, measurable limits that we callnatural law. Each individual person-ality interprets these forms according tothe content of the memory storehouseof the KnowingSelf gained through ex-perience, direct and abstract observa-tion. and the idiosyncracies of the physi-cal body, and thus there is brought intoexistence the phenomenal world. Itmakes no difference whether an inter-pretation is the correct one, or whetherwe deny the correct interpretation of aforce and accept a false one as beingcorrect, the correct interpretation willcontinue to exist. In the words of thewell known example; we have learnedthat an object projected into the airwill return to the earth, and if we tossa stone into the air and fail to removeourselves from beneath it, no amount ofwilling against the law of gravity will

prevent us from being struck by thestone.

The laws of the Creative Force, inboth the objective and the subjectivemanifestations, manifest as a rhythmiccycle of one sort or another. We canall see this action in certain forms of

plant life, in which a strong surge ofCreative Force vitalizes the plant everyspring, causing a fresh wave or cycle ofthe orderly plan to be instituted. By onemeans or another we can definitely chartthese cycles in all phenomenal life, par-ticularly those cycles that most directlyaffect the human race; and by conform-ing our acts to those cycles we can livein much greater harmony and happinessthan when we live by some hitormisssystem.

The most noticeable and most strong-ly felt cycle, in a worldwide sense, is

one having a length of 11.2 years; thatis, every 11.2 years the orderly evolu-tion of mankind reaches a peak or crisisby reason of a revitalizing surge of Cre-ative Energy. It is known that the lastsuch peak occurred about September 15,1929, and the date for the last one be-hind that would be about July 1, 1918. You will notice that the most momen-tous crisis of each of these cvcles oc-curred just after those dates. This canbe carried back indefinitely and it willhold true for each cycle. Figuring fromthe known length of this cycle, and the

known time of the last peak, the datesfor the next two peaks are December 15,1940, and March 1, 1952. From theway things are going at the time of thiswriting (August, 1940) it would seemthat a crisis of some kind, of a world-wide nature, should be reached by nextspring (1941). Because it has beennoticed that there is a sort of delayedaction in this cycle (the factors ofhuman will and other impinging cycleswould account for this) and because ofall the foregoing, we can safely say thata decisive, definite crisis of presentworld trends will occur during the firstfew days of 1941, or shortly thereafter,and that a momentous world crisis ofsome sort will occur during the summerof 1952 or shortly thereafter, and et cetera into a distant future.

It would be silly to attempt to predictthe nature of the crisis of 1952. To say

A REASON TO BELIEVE

Q U E S T I O Nwhich comes tothe mind of everyhuman being earlyin life, and whichis maintainedthroughout life, isthe simple interro-gation, “Why?” Itseems to be a trait,not only of the hu-man being, but of

many forms ofanimal life, towant to determine the why or cause ofthings. This trait is particularly out-standing in most human beings, andprobably many forms of advancement infields of science and sociology whichhave benefited man have been due tothis question. A human race devoid ofcuriosity or a desire to know the reason

for things would be a static form of so-ciety, a society where progress andchange were unknown.

Possibly in these troubled days somemay reflect that it would be a relief ifman did live under such conditionswhere he accepted without question hisenvironment and destiny, where heworked as best he might with the helpof his natural instincts and left little tobe acquired by his experience with en-

 vironment. Such arguments as to the

 value of ignorance rather than knowl-edge may sound reasonable, but becauseman is what he is they are not plausibleand they just will not work. It is as use-less for us to contemplate what manmight be as it is to try to find squarecorners on a perfect sphere. What manis is the problem that faces the individ-ual and the group, not what he couldhave been or might have been.

Because of man’s traits being as theyare, man does not readily accept a thingwithout a reason. He is prone to analyzeanything that may not on its face becompletely acceptable to him. This isparticularly true when his mode of lifeis involved. When one is asked to

change habits and opinions, the immedi-ate query is, why? It is necessary, ac-cording to all laws of salesmanship andadvertising, to convince the individual ofthe reason why he should accept or be-lieve in something that is being present-ed. In a book upon religious psycholo-gy, Dr. Dresser said, “Early Christian-ity was not a question of reason for be-lieving, but of realities believed in.” Agreat deal is contained in these fewwords, and the statement might equallyapply not only to Christianity but to allgreat religions, all great systems of

teaching and philosophy which havecontributed to the betterment of man-kind. The author of these words wishesto emphasize that those who acceptedthe example and principles of Christianty as taught by Christ Himself did nothave to be convinced of a reason fortheir faith or for their belief, but onlyneeded to have brought before them therealities which were existent, and whichwhen once perceived and understoodwere beyond the necessity of explanation.

Examples are given in religious writ-ings, in the New Testament, and other-wise of those who questioned religiousleaders and masters. Some of thesequestions led to speculation, to compari-son of philosophies, to a considerationof ideologies that were prevalent at thetime. Others simply requested informa-tion to fill a need, such as the exampleof the Samaritan woman at the well.The first were not always convinced;the second needed little to convincethem. They only needed their cares andtroubles laid aside in order that a peaceof mind might exist instead.

The further civilization has advancedfrom fundamental principles, the more it

has had to elaborate these fundamentalprinciples in order to bring about, con-sciously or unconsciously, in the mindsof those it attempted to influence, the

 value that existed in these principles orteachings. Religions of various de-nominations, sects and creeds have soelaborated their systems of worship thatto many participants the realities of the

needs that could be filled by the actualunderstanding of the fundamentalstaught are unknown. This is not acriticism of ritual or of beautiful edi-fices erected by those who wish to wor-ship in an environment most conducivefor that purpose. There is no reason

why the reality of the need that a formof teaching can fill cannot go hand inhand with its development through theages and with its elaboration to fill theaesthetic needs in man’s daily life.

 A reason for believing in anythingcan usually be judged in terms of itsutility. We are practicalminded today,and we want results for all expenditureswhich we make, whether these be interms of money, time or energy, or acombination of all. The results we seekmay only be in momentary contentment,or they may be in terms of living toward

the acquisition of true happiness. Butwhatever may be the purpose, we mustfirst have faith in that to which we setourselves, because not all can be knownwithout experience. We must have faithenough in a thing, due to its evident

 value or due to the recommendation ofsomeone in whom we trust, to go aheadwithout hesitation. Knowledge and ex-perience consecutively follow faith, eachmore or less supplanting faith. Experi-ence is the final criterion for judging theutility of anything we seek.

Today all men seek explanation of

what is occurring about them and withinthem. A great deal of energy is usednot only in seeking an explanation ofour immediate environment, but in rush-ing home to the radio or newspaper toseek the latest news in order to sum upin our own minds the present happen-ings in view of our understanding of thepast, and thereby seek to interpret thefuture. While few will admit it, in thesedays we have all become prophets. Weare all attempting to explain the future. As I write these words, there has justoccurred an incident of international im-

portance, and while attending a lunch-eon of a group of businessmen of thiscity, I heard numerous individuals ex-press their opinion as to the cause andprobable result of this happening. Withdue respect to their judgment, I couldnot help but think that probably all werewrong. No one knows what the conse-quences will be.

The fault of this lack of orientationto the present and the future is due notonly to our inability to interpret thepresent events in terms of the past, butinstead to our failure to consider orig-inal causes. Man will never find the ex-planation of all events outside himself. Just as the reason for believing in any-thing is answered within man, so withinhim lies the explanation of much thatgoes on outside him. If we seek thetruth we must seek it at its source, be-cause regardless of our religious con-

 victions we must acknowledge thatCosmic law, God, truth and love areterms applied to the same thing. Weknow soul is dependent for its existenceupon this very cause, and we know it isresident within us, and that there andthere alone is the answer to many of

our perplexities.While man is placed in this world tocope with his environment, it is also for

the purpose of understanding himself.Therefore, instead of giving all our timeand efforts toward finding the reasonfor all things outside us, since we willby the necessity of our daily life con-tinue to give most of our time to the ob-

 jective world, let us determine to atleast give a few minutes each day to an-other phase of our existence. The pur-pose of these comments is to encourage you to participate in the activities of theCathedral of the Soul, which was estab-lished to give all who desired help inusing the possibilities that lie withinthem for constructive purposes. The existence of discrimina-tory action must be taken into account.The fact that the human race is not farremoved from the cave man age, and thefact that we are free agents and maydecide to do this instead of that, leadsus to adopt a physical course of actioninstead of a mental course of action inmost instances. However, 1952 might

see humanity step across a thresholdinto a new world of cooperative effortleading to a hastened, less retarded de-

 velopment of the orderly plan of evolu-tion of the Intelligent Creative Force.

However, it is entirely in your hands. It is up to you, not your neighbor.  Youmust understand that the tensions thathave been building up within you duringthe past few months are an indicationof the upsurge of Creative Force of the

present cycle, and, understanding that,work off your tension by harmonizingwith the Intelligent Creative Force insome constructive, creative effort. Thenext time someone growls at you, in-stead of growling back at him, realizethat a lack of knowledge on his part isthe underlying cause. Try a helpful,friendly attitude, and watch the almostmiraculous results.

We can look back across the agesand see how man evolved from thesimple amoebic existence through theprimitive stages of human life to wherewe stand today. We can look aheadthrough the eyes of those at the fore ofthe advancing human wave to the daywhen we will cast aside selfish, ambi-tious motives and in the light of com-plete understanding travel on to bound-less ranges of unimagined Light, Life,and Love.

 AMORC is quitewell aware of thatinternational  fed-eration of arcane,initiatique, andmystical Ordersand societies hav-ing authentic  his-tory, and whichbears the titleFederation Uni

 verselle des Ordres et Societes Initiatiques, the initialsof which give us the abbreviated form

of F. U. D. O. S. I. The plan for thisfederation was conceived, as we haveexplained at other times, in 1908. Pre-liminary congresses were held in Europein the years 1921, 1927, and 1931. Dur-ing the summer of 1934, the ultimate or-ganization meeting was held in Brus-sels, Belgium. Dr. H. Spencer Lewis,then Imperator of AMORC, represent-ed the only American Rosicrucian so-ciety or Order at the conclave. Onlysuch mystical, philosophical, and occultorganizations which had establishedhistorical backgrounds were invited and

permitted to affiliate with the federation.The first public declaration in Ameri-ca of the establishment of the federa-tion and its name and initials, F. U. D.O. S. I., was made in the November,1934, issue of “The Rosicrucian Digest.”FIVE YEARS LATER, in fact in theSpring of 1939, the protagonist of apurported small Rosicrucian group hav-

ing its quarters on a farm in EasternUnited States went to Paris, and upon

his return, stated that he had partici-pated in the formation of what he styledan international confederation of Rosi- crucians.  Subsequent correspondencewhich we had with the European Rosi-crucian dignitaries of the RoseCroixand officers of the F. U. D. O. S. I.,copies of which are now in our files,brought forth the statement from themthat if such a confederation was formedin 1939, it had no connection with theauthentic federation, or F. U. D. O. S. I.and was not approved by the arcane so-cieties, and consequently in every re-

spect must be clandestine. This thenwas DISCOVERY NUMBER ONE.DISCOVERY NUMBER T WO

was that this individual has since form-ed or had formed, or participated in theformation of an organization which heterms “Universal Federation of Initia-tique Orders, Fraternities, and Socie-ties.” Here, then, is a daring and mostflagrant copying, not only in spirit butalmost in identical words and title, ofthe original F. U. D. O. S. I. The ob-

 vious similarity could only be intendedto cause confusion. It is, of course, a

kind of flattery, this imitation, but onethat no one ever welcomes.DISCOVERY NUMBER THREE,

which knowledge has been in our pos-session now for several weeks, is that inMarch of this year, this selfstyledGrand Master of a purported Rosicru-cian Fraternity visited several countriesof South America, principally Chile,

where the publisher of an astrologicalalmanac and other literature has becomehis deputy. This deputy has issued andis circulating what is claimed to be asecond Fama Fraternitatis.  Another

amazing fact is that actually a secondFama was previously issued by   AMORC, in other words, in September,1930, under the authority of the lateDr. H. Spencer Lewis, as Imperator, inassociation with the RoseCroix ofEurope. So consequently, eleven years after AMORC  this protagonist trailsalong in his imitative style.

His deputy in Chile has also en- velopes which bear the stamped phrase,“Fraternidad RosaCruz en la Americadel Sur,” literally translated, meaningRosicrucian Fraternity in South Ameri-ca. Since AMORC has for years, underthe authority and charter of the RoseCroix of Europe, been assigned the jur-isdiction of South America for extend-ing the authentic Rosicrucian activities,this sudden issuance of literature pur-porting to come from a RosicrucianFraternity of South America might con-

fuse the several thousand  Spanish-speaking AMORC members in Centraland South America. This, then, is justanother attempt at copying AMORCactivity.

We take this opportunity—and this is our purpose in bringing this to your  attention  — to warn that unless theinitials A. M. O. R. C. are found in anyliterature or announcements issued asRosicrucian or purporting to come froma federation of Rosicrucian or arcanemetaphysical societies, that such haveno connection with the International Congress of the Rosicrucian Order, andare not recognized by the EuropeanFederation or the F. U. D. O. S. I. Re-member, then, the initials A. M. O. R. C.are the key to the authenticity of the

literature, advertisements, announce-ments, booklets, or pamphlets whichmay come to your attention.

Perhaps those who imitate that which AMORC has created or represents orhas put into effect for   years, are un-aware of the maxim, "He who copies islimited to the mind of another."

THE QUEST OF COSMIC CONSCIOUSNESS

HERE are twostandard books onthis subject whichall students areadvised to becomefamiliar with. Onebook, entitled The Quest  o/ Cosmic Consciousness,  isby the wellknownEnglish writer,Paul Brunton. Thesecond book is acareful analysis of

exactly what is meant by the state ofconsciousness known as Cosmic Con-sciousness, and a study of many of thegreat men and women known to havemanifested Cosmic  Consciousness intheir lives and works. The title is Cos-mic Consciousness, and the author wasa physician. Dr. Bucke.

 All evolution is an expansion of con-sciousness. It is said that, in the min-eral, consciousness is in a trance state.In the plant, consciousness is in thestate of deep sleep. In the animal, con-sciousness awakes. In man, conscious-

ness becomes selfconsciousness. Evo-lution does not stop with the state ofsimple selfconsciousness of the averagehuman being. From being consciousonly of himself man rises to the state ofidentifying his consciousness with thatof every living thing on earth. This isconsciousness universalized. This isCosmic Consciousness, or illumination.

This is the consciousness of the man inharmony with the divine currents ofthought which he expresses in works ofgenius.

 A man in harmony with cosmicthought currents is aware of the divineinspiration pouring through him, andhe is able to speak with authority. Theprophets, for example, speak emphat-ically in the name of God. Jesus spokewith authority. The most outstandinginstances of Cosmic Consciousness arethe geniuses who express divine in-spiration in their great works of art

and music, in their philosophies, poetry,and plays. Cosmic Consciousness is nota mere word. It is an actual experi-ence and a degree of understanding.

He who has been through this won-derful experience lives his life on aloftier plane, lives in the light of spir-itual ideals, and sees life from a universal

 viewpoint. He no longer sees life onlyfrom the viewpoint of his own needs,interests, and experiences. The greatavatars of the world certainly experi-enced Cosmic Consciousness: Zoro-aster, Gautama the Buddha, Confucius,

Mohammed, and Moses. The great phi-losophers of Greece, such as Socrates,Plato, and Aristotle, had reached thisdegree of unfoldment. Cosmic Con-sciousness was the source of Leonardoda Vinci’s magnificent paintings, the

 Mono Lisa and the Last Supper.  It wasafter attaining illumination that SirFrancis Bacon was enabled to write that

immortal series of plays, embracing soextraordinary a range of living charac-ters, replete with the most inspired po-etry in the English language. In Mac-beth.  for example, there is complete un-derstanding of the stages of that vill-

ain’s deterioration. In Hamlet, the soulsof Gertrude, the Queen; Claudius, theKing; Polonius, the Councillor; Ophelia,his daughter; and Horatio, Hamlet'sbosom friend, are presented with equal vividness. They are living, human be-ings with such frailties as flesh is heirto. They are not merely types. Norare they submerged in the backgroundbecause of the principal figure, Hamlet,the melancholy Dane. The men andwomen of the various plays are as re-nowned and as real as if they were his-torical personages. Contrast, for ex-ample, the characters in the novels ofCharles Dickens, who is considered offirst rank in English literature. Hismost striking personalities are men, par-ticularly those of the lower classes, orunfortunate men. In A Tale of Two Cities,  for example, Sidney Carton, thedrunken lawyer, and Dr. Manette, thepathetic prisoner of the Bastille, are farmore vivid and effective than CharlesDarnay, presumably the main character.His heroines are all cut after the samepattern, young, exactly 17, pretty, and

with no more definiteness of characterthan wooden dolls.Cosmic Consciousness manifests clear-

ly in the poetry of Walt Whitman. Noother poet has been dominated so com-pletely by the theme of oneness withall that lives and the miracle of even theleast of creation.

"I believe a leaf of grass is no less perfectthat the journey work of the stars . . .

"And a mouse is miracle enough to staggersextillions of infidels.”

I embody all presences outlaw’d or suffering,

See myself in prison shaped like another man,And feel the dull unintermitted pain.

For me the keepers of convicts shoulder theircarbines and keep watch;

It is I let out in the morning, and barr’d atnight.

Not a mutineer walks handcuff’d to jail, but Iam not handcuff'd to him and walk by hisside;

* * *

Not a youngster is taken for larceny, but I goup, too, and am tried and sentenced. . . .

Not a cholera patient lies at the last gasp, butI also lie at the last gasp; . . .

Askers embody themselves in one, and I amembodied in them;

I project my hat, sit shame-faced, and beg.*

Let me quote a few verses from theprophet Jeremiah, Chapter 9 (verses 23and 24):

sense of identification with eternal val-ues that the prophet Jeremiah expressedand that enabled him without a feelingof outrage in us to declare, “Thus saiththe Eternal”—are evidences of CosmicConsciousness. Some have but a touchas Ralph Waldo Emerson, for all hisintellectual understanding and beauty ofstyle. The man who wrote the remark-able essays of Compensation  and The OverSoul was never able to manifestthese qualities in his personal life. Inhis personal life he was the recluse andscholar. Some have entered into the full

glory of identification with the divinein life and of understanding and com-passion with all that lives. Such werethe great Avatars of all ages. Such werethe great geniuses, the flower of thehuman race. Nor did these illuminedsouls express their genius in philosophyor religion or poetry or art alone. Somemanifested their genius in mighty worksof architecture, some in stupendousfeats of engineering, some in remarkablecodes of law, some in supreme states-manship. And some were the inspired

teachers.He who has experienced illuminationhas one disire: to bring the vision thathas transformed his life to his fellowmen still struggling in the valley. Heclothes this vision in the form native tohis genius. He gives as an offering oflove and joyous selfexpression to theworld the fruit that Cosmic Conscious-ness ripened, that never would have ap

peared but for the illumination. Thepoet scribbles his uninspired verse. Thenillumination comes and he writes hismasterpiece. The playwright follows allthe rules of his craft. Yet, the play isdead. It awakens not an answeringemotion. Then illumination comes, and

his plays live and stir every soul thatsees them. The thinker speaks, but noone heeds. Then illumination comes.With master hand he plays upon thehearts of men. He stirs their emotions,kindles thoughts of fire, and becomesthe father of a great movement or a newreligion or a school of thought. CosmicConsciousness gives him appeal to everyhuman heart. He understands humanbeings; he expresses them; he elevatesthem.

Cosmic Consciousness is superior tomind, no matter how brilliant. Through

the rational mind you can realize thefact of Cosmic Consciousness and itsdesirability and its beauty. You maydetermine to lead the life that will findits culmination in illumination. The ra-tional mind, however, may not lead youinto the Promised Land. Like Moses itleads you through the wilderness to the very edge of the River Jordan. Then thelotus blossom flowers, and the GoldenHeart appears.

There are several aspects to CosmicConsciousness. First, there is illumina-tion, which is a realization of the GodWithin, a feeling of oneness with the

divine. Then there is the realization ofthe divine in everything, the immananceof God. Finally, there is the feeling ofidentification with all that lives, withevery human being, with every beastand bird and stone. With the realiza-tion of the divine in everything, comesthe realization that nothing is dead.

 As there is a center in the nervoussystem for each psychic power, so isthere an actual organ through whichillumination manifests, and that organ islocated in the heart. Let him who isperfectly sure of his strength of mind

and will work at the opening of thepsychic centers. My personal opinion isthat it is better for the untried and soli-tary student to gain his soul powersgradually through the experiences oflife. The student who is working alonedoes not know whether his practice iscorrect or not. He does not know whenhe is straining himself. If he gets into

trouble, in all probability there will beno one for him to turn to for aid or foradvice. No one will even understand just what is wrong. Then is he truly indanger of becoming bewildered and dis-couraged. Acquiring psychic powers islike acquiring skill in playing an instru-

ment, in swimming, in learning a foreignlanguage. For most people whatever isgained alone is imperfect. The greatestgenius in music needs the instruction ofan expert. Technique requires trainingand mastery.

When the student is ready, theMaster appears. There is much that thestudent can do to prepare himself. Norare psychic powers necessary for the ex-perience of illumination or for discipleship. Each student has a major task indisciplining his own nature and in teach-ing himself to feel a universal brotherand in training himself for useful serv-ice in the world. Illumination is the markof a ripe soul. Through illumination thesoul is enabled to express its genius. Toachieve illumination, then, work steadilyat the task that is nearest and dearestto you. Love makes for identification.Love opens up the channels of inspira-tion. Love makes you receptive to everynew thought and idea. Love annihilatestime and space. Love makes concentra-tion easy.

Through love of your task you willachieve the maximum that can be achieved at your degree of soul develop-ment. As a student of the Ancient Wis-dom you naturally select a task in har-mony with divine purposes. As a busi-ness man you conduct your affairs inthe light of mystic principles. As amother you manage your home andraise your children in the light of the Ancient Wisdom. As an artist youpaint pictures that teach people to seeGod in man and nature. As a musician

 your aim is to inspire and to uplift. As a composer your aim is to catch thedivine harmonies, to help people through

 your music to become one with all that

lives that people may become refined,gentle, compassionate, and composed. As a teacher you emphasize those as-pects of your subject that are vital froma mystic viewpoint and you minimizethose aspects that are useless from themystic viewpoint. Everyone may not beabsolutely free to do exactly as he wish-es. Much can be accomplished, how-

ever, merely by a shift in emphasis, bywise omissions, and by a change ofspirit. Then in the course of time theopportunity comes to do a litte more.Where you feel that very little can bedone, you can be a silent witness of thetruth within you by your conduct. Oneof our members was very much sur-prised when a friend said to her sud-denly, “It is quite evident that you areliving according to standards differentfrom ours. What is it?’’

People who have known you will beaware of all the little ways in which youhave changed. They may even be in-spired by your example to learn more ofthe mystic life. At least they will learnsomething of it and respect it if not ad-mire it. Some, of course, may become

hostile. Two types of people becomehostile: first is the sensual type. Theyare wedded to their appetites. Thistype says, “I’d rather die than give upmy favorite dishes. What is left in life?”The second type is the intellectual. Theintellectual is hemmed in by the limita-tions of the rational mind. He is a slaveto a method known as scientific method.What can be readily grasped by thescientific mind and what cannot be eas-ily demonstrated by the scientific tech-nique he refuses to believe can be pos-sible. He has not yet reached the limits

of his powers and methods. The greatintellectual or the great scientist hasreached the point where he is awarethat pioneering is necessary in frontierprojects. He is no longer so sure ofwhat the reason can explain and whatscientific method can demonstrate. Heis, therefore, ready to advance in humil-ity. A man like Dr. Arthur H. Comp-ton. the Nobel prizewinner in physicsand head of the Department of Physicsin the University of Chicago, is readyto admit divine principles and is readyto admit the limitations of physical sci-ence. Not so theaverage intellectual orscientist. He scoffs because he is actual-ly unable to realize spiritual experiences.He refuses to consider an idea until ithas the stamp of authority. Therefore,when you discover the rank materialistor sensualist or atheist, do not arguewith him. He may awaken some day,but his awakening will not be due toargument; it may be due to a shatter-ing life experience.

There is no nobler task than the fash-

ioning of a soul. There is no nobler giftthan a beautiful soul. Then, brothersand sisters, let us all join in the glorioustask of fashioning our souls so that wemay become ready channels for Cosmictasks. All good and useful work is theMaster’s work. Be the bearer of lightwherever you are—in your home, in

 your church, in your community, wher-ever you perform your daily tasks. Let

 your life be sanctified by your sublimegoal. Let every thought, every word,every motion, every act, no matter howhumble, be inspired by the light ofTruth, by your great purpose. Thebeautiful thing is that through living thelife of love and of service, all qualitiesare eventually added to one. The lifenecessary to achieve even a partial il-

lumination, for example, helps one to be-come intuitive. Meditation, dramatiza-tion, and identification — the methodshelpful in developing the intuition arealso helpful in leading to illumination.

The shortest road is that of devotion,utter love and devotion to a great causethat is in harmony with the great cause,or to the great cause itself. Forget thepersonal benefits, forget the personalgoal, forget the psychic powers. Thinkonly of this beautiful cause—helping thehuman race to evolve. Is there a greatercause to which a man can dedicate his

life, his powers, his thoughts, and hisaspirations? Think not of the millionsunillumined. Think rather that from onelight many lights may be kindled. Howmany causes began with a small, ardentgroup, and today they sweep the worldwhether for evil or for good. Hithertothe illumined souls have been few andstill are comparatively few. We are stillin the Kali Yuga, the Age of Iron. Weare still in a cycle of materialism. Wehave spade work to do. We have tokeep the wavering and the doubtfulfrom falling completely a prey to the

 vicious ideas circulating through thecountry and through the world. Wemust reach all who are ready for lightand the truth. We must train them alsoto be inspired workers. We must unitethe workers throughout the world. Wemust bear witness to the philosophyfirmly opposed to the atheism, the ma-terialism, and the narrow intellectualismof the age. We accept the moral law asthe foundation of the universe. We ac-cept the divine Architect of the universe.

The Key to Meditation

HERE is a way to

read, to meditate,to speak or towrite which fewseem to be able touse. Many meditate in an en-tanglement ofthoughts and prin-ciples which soonlead to confusion;but those who aresuccessful havelearned that the

right way to meditate is first to let the

force of the soul make its way into ourthinking. When we have made thisprovision and are in an exalted stateof mind, then we will benefit most fromour meditation, for our intuition is atwork and inspiration is sure to come toour assistance. We are thus partly ob- jective and partly subjective. So, whenwe wish to meditate—or to read, tospeak and write on spiritual matters—we must first make ourselves receptiveto inspiration or higher guidance; en-gaging our thoughts in the process, butwithout hampering the incoming flow

of inspiration.Most people never meditate. Theythink they do so, but their conclusions seem always wrong. Why? I believeit is merely because they are only usingthe objective mind which is very liableto err in its judgment. When we readour lessons, we must have this elevationof spirit to benefit most from them.

When we meditate, it is a necessity to

have it. When we want to impart truthto another, we must have the light of itin ourselves, for we do not give whatwe have not. And when we write, it isimperative to be receptive to inspiration,if we are going to be original and en-lightening, for inspiration is always newand revealing.

How can humanity have access to thetruth which lies behind the surface ofthings, be happy and peaceful again ifit lacks this efficacy, which will adjusteverything and redeem everyone? Iwould emphasize that this is the  first step and all else is to be done startingfrom there.

We have an example of this in ourinstructions. We are taught first howto awaken the Inner Self, then we aregiven the keys to a basic understand-ing of the mysteries of life, so that ourawakened insight may show us the truthwhich our mere study of its principlescannot reveal in all its radiance andsplendor. Theories may remain lifelesswords. So again, we should be moreinterested in calling into action our inner

Master than in filling our heads withtheories and being assailed at everymoment with armies of doubts and sus-picions. Yes, this is the first step of all.The key which opens the door not onlyto the unfathomable depths of Cosmicwisdom but also to lasting happiness,profound peace and supreme achieve-ment.
