G’ulah: Redemption

They went forth from Egypt on a single nightbut next time the miracle will be different.

Once two Sages were walking very early in the valleyand they saw the light of the morning star. Said oneto the other, “This is how the redemption will be.The dawn breaks with a single ray of light and bit bybit the sky is illumined, until morning comes and thedarkness is gone. So the redemption will occur littleby little, growing steadily and gradually until theworld is full of light.”

Do not wait for a miracle or the sudden transformationof the world. Bring the day closer, step by step, withevery act of courage, of kindness, of healing and repair.Do not be discouraged by the darkness. Lift up everyspark you can and watch the horizon for the coming ofdawn. Look closely! It has already begun.

On Rosh HaShanah this is written; on the Fast of Yom Kippur this is sealed:How many will pass away from this world, how many will be born into it; who will live and who will die;who will reach the ripeness of age, who will be taken before their time; who by fire and who by water; who by war and who by beast;(who by famine and who by drought;) who by earthquake and who by plague; (who by strangling and who by stoning;) who will rest and who will wander; who will be tranquil and who will be troubled; who will be calm and who tormented; who will live in poverty and who in prosperity; who will be humbled and who exalted—But through repentance, prayer and righteous deeds we can transcend the harshness of thedecree.

Anthem - Cantor Rachel Rhodes“Given”

Music: Dan Nichols and EighteenLyrics: Dan Nichols and Cantor Ellen Dreskin

T’filat HaLeiv: Prayer of the Heart

Communal prayer: Is it better to ask “Give us peace”with cries of woe, or to ask calmly, quietly? But if we ask calmly, God will thinkwe don’t really need peace and quiet.

— Yehuda Amichai

I, may I rest in peace — I, who am still living, say,May I have peace in the rest of my life.I want peace right now while I’m still alive.I don’t want to wait like that pious man who wished for one legof the golden chair of Paradise, I want a four-legged chairright here, a plain wooden chair. I want the rest of my peace now.I have lived out my life in wars of every kind: battles withoutand within, close combat, face-to-face, the faces alwaysmy own, my lover-face, my enemy-face.Wars with the old weapons — sticks and stones, blunt axe, words, dull ripping knife, love and hate, and wars with newfangled weapons — machine gun, missile, words, land mines exploding, love and hate.I don’t want to fulfill my parents’ prophecy that life is war.I want peace with all my body and all my soul.Rest me in peace.

— Yehuda Amichai

II. Zichronot: Remembrance

God, remember us—not only our mistakesbut our good intentionsand our tender hearts.

Remember our ancestorswho for thousands of yearshave asked forgivenesswith the wail of the ram's horn.

Today again we open ourselvesto the calls of the shofarreminding us sleepers, awake! We remember what matters most in our lives.

Help us shed old memorieswhich no longer serve us.Help us insteadto always remember You.

Shofarot: Revelation

The shofar reminds usof the ram in the thicket.Where are we, too, ensnared? Can our song set us free?

The sound of the shofarshatters our complacency. It wails with our griefand stutters with our inadequacy.

The shofar calls us to teshuvah. The shofar cries outI was whole, I was broken,I will be whole again.

Make shofars of us, God!Breathe through us: make of usresonating chambersfor Your love.

Kaddish Yatom: Mourner’s Kaddish

On this day, we prayed to God zochreinu, remember. Remember us and inscribe us once again for another year in the Book of Life. Now, we too are asked to zachor — remember— calling to mind all those people who filled the pages of our lives with joy and meaning who supported us, uplifted us and loved us. This is our moment of memory, as we prepare to recite kaddish yatom, our mourners’ prayer, each one of us calls to mind those whom we have loved and lost, those whom we miss on this and all special days. We close our eyes and picture their faces, recall their touch, their hug. Open our hearts with gratitude for all they gave to us.
