FEBRUARY 6, 2011 – FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Dear Friends, In his book Past, Present & Future, author Isaac Asimov referred to the marvelous work of Anton Van Leeuwenhoek. In the 1670s, the Dutch draper indulged in his hobby of painstakingly grinding perfect little lenses which he used to magnify everyday objects. He peered through those lenses constantly and drew pictures of what he saw. On occasion he would even look through his lenses at water drawn from ditches. In 1677, Leeuwenhoek discovered small living creatures, too small to see without magnification, swimming about in the ditch water. He uncovered a whole unsuspected world of micro-life. In 1683, he discovered the world of bacteria. Two hundred years later, in the 1860s, the French chemist Louis Pasteur relied upon the previous discoveries of van Leeuwenhoek to show that these micro-organisms were the cause of infectious disease. It was with that “germ theory” of disease that physicians became, for the first time, true healers and began to cure sickness. The death rate dropped, and in the last century, over much of the world, the life expectancy was increased from thirty-five to seventy. Because a Dutch draper took the time to pursue knowledge, a world was changed. For some, the quest for knowledge is an easy endeavor, depending upon the topic. Interest seems to be one of the factors which makes a difference. For others, interest may help, but the search can still be tedious. In the years in which I have been a priest, I have encountered quite a few folks who are really well versed in their own particular fields or hobbies, but have precious little knowledge about the foundations of their faith. What is even more interesting to me is that a significant number of those who do lack that knowledge really aren’t concerned about it. The result can be that extremely bright people may hold rather simplistic notions of God’s activity in our lives and world; notions which can be passed on to children and others. Just as we scour journals and the internet for more and more knowledge to enable us to deal with the complexities of life, is it not equally important for us to advance continually in our understanding of divine dimension? Sometimes I sense that persons identify faith with a warm feeling and think knowledge is antithetical to faith. Thus, understanding the experience of faith does not have merit for them. It seems to me that faith is intimately connected with truth. The experience may provide us with an understanding of God, but the experience cannot be interpreted in isolation. Faith gains a richness when it is viewed in the context of tradition or the reflections and study of others who have preceded us. Truth offers a grounding which is lasting when the warm feeling fades. Just as science builds upon the past, so too does our understanding of God. I wonder sometimes if we could not appreciate our faith much more if we sought to understand it even as much as we do health or financial issues that affect us. Have a great week everyone! Love Fr. Dave

FEBRUARY 6, 2011 – FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The readings today focus on how the children of the King are to show to the world who their Father is by acting like him. This, in fact, is the best way to accomplish the “New Evangelization,” the re-announcement of the Gospel in places where, though it was once accepted, it has been eclipsed by secularism. When that happens, as Pope Benedict has said, we lose a proper understanding of the meaning of the most basic human experiences, like birth and death. Isaiah speaks about sheltering the oppressed and providing for the afflicted. Children in the womb are more oppressed in our day than any other segment of the population. The prophet’s words, applied in our day, call us to pro-life action. Isaiah also points out that this must begin with our own flesh and blood. “Do not turn your back on your own.” These are powerful words for our culture: parents, do not turn your back on the child you have conceived! Grandparents, do not turn your back on your daughter’s unborn child. Speak up for that life, and intervene to help both your daughter and her child! Some mistakenly think that the fact that the child in the womb is “their own” is precisely what gives them the “right to choose” to kill the child by abortion. But Isaiah’s words declare the opposite: when one is your own flesh and blood, your obligations to that person increase, and you are all the more obliged to do them good. Only when God’s people are actively and generously living as the “People of Life” can the words of today’s readings be fulfilled.

ABOUT LITURGY

Use of candles at Mass: The liturgical requirement for the use of candles at Mass simply states that at least two lit candles should be on or next to the altar and even four or six may be used (especially at festival times) and these may be the candles carried in procession (GIRM, no. 117). The origin of lit candles, of course, was functional: before the time of electricity, candles were necessary even in daytime because the churches tended to be rather dark. Now candles are no longer functional but symbolic; they remind us of Christ, the Light of the world; in the context of Sunday’s gospel they also remind us that we are to be light that shines in the darkness.
