Holidays provide us all with a much needed change in routine and an opportunity to recharge. I hope that you have returned refreshed and ready for 2019. It has been lovely to see children walking through the gates each morning with smiles on their faces. It is a credit to our hard working staff that children are eager and happy to return to school. Classes have settled and programs have already commenced - not wasting any time and making the most of every opportunity to maximise leaning. Well done to both students and teachers. This year we welcome some new faces to Rose Bay PS. Please welcome Garance Cheroux, Eleanor Rayner, Emma Salteri and Samantha Abbott to our school. I know you will all make them feel most welcome and part of our community. New staff bring with them different ways of thinking and fresh ideas that invigorate us all. Welcome also to all those families joining us this year, particularly our 108 new kindergarten children and families. Whilst starting school can be both exciting and daunting, you will all create many wonderful memories over the years at our school. I look forward to another great year of learning at Rose Bay. You Can Do It At Rose Bay PS we strive to meet the educational needs of the whole child, not just the academic needs. Many of you would be aware of the wonderful programs on offer-from cyber safety to the creative arts and sport. Our wellbeing program is called “You Can Do It!” This program aims to provide the skills needed by all of us to fully participate in the wider world and thrive. The “You Can Do It!” framework addresses aspects of the psychological functioning of young people that lead to improved learning, behaviour, social and emotional outcomes. Keep an eye out in upcoming newsletters for further information and at-home-teaching tips. Research indicates that the program is most successful in communities where adults are also able to model skills of getting along, persistence, organisation, confidence and resilience, as identified by the program. Did you know all our students can access over 1,500 eBooks selected for Primary school students by downloading the app or reading them via Oliver library in their student portal?

Did you know that all our students can log on to the DET portal and Oliver library by following the below instructions?

1. Google search using key words; DET student portal NSW. 2. To login to the student portal all students must use their DET login.

Please ask your child’s teacher if your child does not know their DET login and password.

3. Click on the Oliver Library icon . 4. Click the icon

Did you know your child’s DET login also gives access to the 2019 NSW Premier Reading challenge launched on Monday 4th March and closes 30th August 2019?

You can access this site by a google search with NSW Premier Reading Challenge or click on https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html The login instructions are on the web page. This is a great way to encourage reading. When searching using Oliver Library in Orbit an icon will come up to indicate it is a title on the challenge list. A great feature to search for recommended books! All Kindergarten students will be participating in the challenge. The books they read during library lessons will be entered for them.

Rose Bay Public School Initiatives 2018

At Rose Bay Public School we are always working behind the scenes to implement projects that go to improving both the physical space and environmental sustainability of the school. Ultimately this helps to improve the wellbeing of children. At this time of year, it is important to look back and acknowledge our achievements.

Bathroom Upgrade Our toilet upgrade looks fantastic! New bright and colourful tiling, new stalls, new sinks and new flooring means the children’s toilets are modern and welcoming – and the kids thoroughly agree!! This was a significant project in terms of cost (over $100,000) and was made possible with contributions from the P&C and Rose Bay PS OOSH.

Seating Have you seen the new seating outside kindergarten rooms? These seats provide a shaded space for eating, a quiet space for children to connect with others during break times, and the flexibility to be used as an outdoor learning area.

New stalls and new floors have made a big impact

Wet Area The improved wet area is a multipurpose space that has been heavily utilised since its construction. Children in adjacent rooms have quick and easy access for a variety of creative learning activities and ready access to water for hand washing. Even a small initiative can have a significant impact on learning and wellbeing of children and teachers.

Air Conditioning We are waiting to hear the outcome of our recent grant submission for the State Government Funded Air Cooling Program. We will keep you posted should we be successful. In the interim we continue to work to provide cooler spaces throughout the school. This year we have installed air conditioning in a further 5 classrooms, ensuring children have the best possible opportunities to learn whilst at our school.

Our Solar Panels Our school hall now hosts solar panels. A successful grant application made this project possible. Not only do these panels assist in reducing the school’s environmental impact and our overall electricity bill, but they are also a valuable teaching resource. The system will help us power our learning facilities with renewable energy; cut 20% off our annual energy bill; produce clean green energy equal to powering 209 school computers each year; and avoid 37 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions - like taking 13 cars off the road each year. Take a look next time you are passing the hall.

Grants Did you know that we have successfully applied for two grants – the Solar in Schools Grant that made our solar installation possible and a $20,000 Community Building Partnership grant that will be used to construct additional playground seating, further improving our playground space. We have also recently applied for a NSW DEC Capital Works Grant which would allow us to undertake a playground improvement program. We eagerly await the outcome. In the meantime we are currently examining options to engage a landscape architect who would work with the school, the children and the community to develop a landscape master plan for our school. Our garden is important to us and we aim to get it right!

Smart Boards Our new smart boards have been installed. Rose Bay Public School has an excellent reputation for its technology programs that enhance learning outcomes for all students. The purchase and installation of these whiteboards was made possible with support from the P&C. Whiteboards promote creativity through design and experimentation, collaboration, communication, critical thinking and engagement.

Bike Racks Our new bike racks are heavily utilised and assist to encourage and promote healthy activity, not just for students, but for the entire family.
