Community water fluoridation is beneficial to oral health.
Rosa Martinez
Benefits of natural water fluoridation were noticed in 1930 by Dr. Frederick Mckay.
In 1945, Grand Rapids, Michigan became the first city in the world to fluoridate its drinking water.
After the15 yr. study the results had proved that fluoride hardened tooth enamel making teeth less susceptible to decay.
What is fluoride?Fluoride is the ionic form of the element
fluorine.Fluoride is the 13th most abundant element
on the earth’s crust, and widely distributed in nature.
Fluoride is added to drinking water because :It reduces the prevalence of tooth decay in
local populations.Fluoride is added to the water in
communities who wish to fluoridate. It is only added where the content of fluoride is less than the recommended amount of 0.7 to 1.2 ppm.
This concentration provides the optimal health benefit, to protect from adverse effects.
Fluoride vs. no Fluoride
Facts on fluorideFruits, vegetable, and cereals have small
amounts of fluorideSea foods and tea leaves have rich amounts
of fluoride.Fluoride hardens tooth enamel by converting
HYDROXYAPATITE CRYSTALS to FLUORAPATITE.
Fluorapatite is less vulnerable to damage from plaque acids.
Teeth are less prone to cavities, providing a healthy and beautiful smile.
SourcesChief source of fluoride: water, topical agents.Small amounts: fresh fruits, eggs, and
Vegetables. Rich amounts: sea foods,And tea leaves.

Dental fluorosis?Dental fluorosis is caused by the
inappropriate use of fluoride.Fluorosis is a defect of tooth enamel caused
by fluoride’s interference with tooth-forming cells.
Mild dental fluorosis Severe dental fluorosis
Mild Fluorosis Severe Fluorosis
The American Dental Association recommends water fluoridation of community water supplies because it is safe, effective and necessary in preventing tooth decay.
Water fluoridation is one of the most effective public measure for the prevention of dental carries. Everyone can take advantage of this benefit from the convenience of their own home by simply choosing to drink and cook with fluoridated tap water.
