From the Desk of Dr. Jane

Every year, the United Nations International Peace Day is held on 21 September, when people around the world express their desire for peace. It is hoped that there will be a ceasefire among warring factions on that day. We have chosen to celebrate Day of Peace during a weekend close to 21 September so that the majority of Roots & Shoots groups, their families and other JGI friends can be involved, I have chosen to have the “Roots & Shoots Day of Peace” take place in late September in support of the United Nation’s peace endeavors.

At this time we “fly” Giant Peace Dove puppets in cities, towns, and villages around the world and make a commitment that we shall work towards a world at peace. Last year, celebrations for peace were held and Giant Peace Doves flew in 113 cities in a total of 35 countries. From Beijing to Amsterdam to New York City to Buenos Aires, Dar Es Salaam to Kathmandu, Giant Peace Doves spread their wings across the globe.

This book, the 2008 Roots & Shoots International Day of Peace Book illustrates how Roots & Shoots members and friends are making peace possible—in themselves, within their communities and around the world! These celebrations are truly important. They bring people of different cultures and religions together in their community; and create a feeling of solidarity among Roots & Shoots around the globe. By flying these doves we also make a commitment to living in better harmony with nature. Congratulations to everyone who took part in the 2008 Roots & Shoots International Day of Peace.

In Peace,

Jane Goodall, PhD, DBEUN Messenger of PeaceFounder, the Jane Goodall Institute

Page 7: Roots & Shoots International Day of Peace 2008 - Book

In 2002, then U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan named Jane Goodall, Ph.D., DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, a United Nations Messenger of Peace. She was reappointed by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2007. As one of only ten United Nations Messengers of Peace, Dr. Jane carries the message that to achieve global peace, we must not only stop fighting each other, but also stop destroying the world.

Dr. Jane created the annual Roots & Shoots International Day of Peace (“Day of Peace”) in 2004 in support of the United Nations International Day of Peace. Each year in late September, Day of Peace is observed when members and friends of Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots from around the world come together to promote peace.

Roots & Shoots members participate in the Day of Peace by planning and implementing peace projects that help make the world a better place for

people, animals and the environment. All over the world, young people craft Giant Peace Dove Puppets from reused materials and fly the Doves in their communities to symbolize their commitment to peace.

Together, Roots & Shoots members and partners are working to promote peace in their own communities and around the globe. For Dr. Jane and Roots & Shoots members and partners, peace is not just about conflict, it’s a way of life. You can create peace in your own backyard, between your neighbors and even within your own family.

By celebrating with Roots & Shoots on Day of Peace, you can make a personal commitment to peace and take action to make the world a better place. Peace is possible!

My Special PlaceBy Noelle S., Roots & Shoots-AustraliaWritten in celebration of Roots & Shoots International Day of Peace

As the sun hits the seaMy place comes alive.I begin to imagineThat the world won’t survive.

Wars, pollution,The amount of trees dying,The suffering of animalsLeaves me crying.

How can I sit here not helping at all,When the world is sending an SOS call?I leap to my feet. I must act fast. If I don’t act now, my place will not last.

I can pick up litter and plant native trees,Be kind to others, and love them with ease.If I lead by example for others to follow,The world will have a better tomorrow.

Building A Giant Peace Dove

Page 88: Roots & Shoots International Day of Peace 2008 - Book

Everyone can celebrate Day of Peace by getting together with your friends and Building a Giant Peace Dove Puppet.

These puppets are made out of reused and recycled materials. When we fly them we symbolize what a world at Peace could look like.

Preparations

(Upper Left) Carefully read through the Roots & Shoots Guide to Building a Giant Peace Dove Puppet. Use these as your guide. Feel free to make adjustments and changes to make your Dove just right.

(Lower Left) Measure and cut your fabric, which is in this case old household bed sheets.

Construction

(Facing Page, Upper Left) Once the fabric is measured, use a sewing machine to stitch it all together.

(Facing Page, Lower Left) Use chicken wire, or a tomato cage to make the frame for the Dove’s head. Use recycled tires to attach a t-tube inside the frame for the pole that will support the Dove’s head.

(Facing Page, Right) Place the head frame inside the fabric.

Page 90: Roots & Shoots International Day of Peace 2008 - Book
Page 91: Roots & Shoots International Day of Peace 2008 - Book

Construction

(Facing Page, Upper Left) Once the head cage is in the fabric, begin painting the eyes using black, blue or any color you like.

(Facing Page, Lower Left) Use yellow paint to color the beak. Once you’re finished painting let the head dry.

(Facing Page, Right) When the head is dry attach the head piece to the body by sewing the bottom of the head to the middle of the fabric for the body.

(Right) When the whole dove is assembled, use long poles made from plastic, or bamboo, or any other safe material and attach the wings and the head to them.

When your Dove is complete—head, body, poles and all stretch those fabric wings and you’re ready to fly.

Gather some of your friends, find a nearby park or open field, and show your commitment to creating a more peaceful place for people, animals and the environment.

When you fly your Dove, make sure you take pictures and share them! You can send them to [email protected].
