Modi Enterprises began as a small family run business started by a simple, kind hearted man Ram Baksh Modi.

The reigns of this business fell into the hands of Mr. Chiranji Lal Modi, after the death of Ram Baksh Modi in 1857.

Under his able leadership the family soon started to arrange for supplies for the British cantonment from Kanpur to Peshawar. He started his career as a commission agent of food grains in Patiala and in 1894 he bought the very mill that he regularly supplied wheat too.

Mr. Chiranji Lal Modi was not only selected as the honorary magistrate but also the City Father of Patiala.

On August 09, 1902 he was blessed with his first son Gujar Mal Modi in Kanaur.

In 1920, at the age of 18, Gujar Mal Modi left school, continuing his education through private coaching. He became actively involved in the family business, learning from practical experience. From 1920 up till his demise in 1975 he revolutionized the Indian economy and industrial space.

Gujar Mal Modi was a renowned industrialist and philan-thropist, who co-established the Modi Group of companies and the industrial city of Modinagar in 1933, along with his brother Kedar Nath Modi. Gujar Mal Modi was a natural when it came to enterprise, voluntarily taking the lead in business initiatives and working tirelessly towards realis-ing them. A sugar mill in Modinagar marked the beginning of the Modi Group conglomerate, which later diversified into varied fields. Gujar Mal Modi established schools and colleges at his birthplace, Mahendragarh, in Patiala and in Modinagar. He also contributed a lot in the field of higher education by giving grants to established institutions such as Banaras Hindu University, and different colleges in Meerut and other places.

Gujar Mal Modi’s long innings was marked with far too many achievements, awards and honours. Besides, he held key positions and memberships in a number of prestigious organisations. The year 1968 proved to be the most momentous though. Not only had he been elevated

to the post of president of FICCI that year, the Union Government, in recognition of his contributions towards India’s industrial growth and public welfare, decided to confer the Padma Bhushan on him. His spirit, vision, foresight and drive were hailed as reasons for the transformation of Begumabad into an industrial township that boasted scores of factories, schools, colleges, medical facilities, residential quarters and places of worship. In addition, his efforts towards rehabilitation of displaced persons (during the Partition) at the nearby Govind Puri Colony were lauded.

1933Birth ofModinagar

He discoverd a sleepy village called Begumabad, 50km from Delhi and set up a sugar mill on 100 bighas (62 acres) of land with machinery from England. This was the birth of Modinagar.

He established cooperative societies that set up basic infrastructure, roads, water supply & medical facilities to meet the needs of society. Shri Modi also set up Modi Industries in different spheres such as washing soaps, toilet soaps, biscuits, confectionary oil, textiles and other essentials.

India became independent and a republic. In the following years, Shri Modi’s industrial zeal and vigour was doubled.

Shri Modi’s first endeavor to commemorate freedom was to set up a textile mill. The mill till date is considered to be the largest running mill in the country.

Shri Modi established a new colony called Govindpur, for the refugees from Pakistan in Modinagar in an effort to help them in rehabilitation and set up cottage industries for their benefit. He established a lantern factory to bring light to the villagesof India and help children study.

The title of ‘Rai Bahadur’ was conferred. The citation recognized his valuable contribution to society, commerce and industry. He also constructed several schools, colleges for women across UP, a women’s hospital, a Sanskrit school at Haridwar, workers quarters and a dispensary.

Shri Modi along with the Tatas and the Birlas, lobbied against the socialist leanings and unfair taxes that were levied. He also set up an oxygen gas plant,a tubewell company, an arc electrodes factory, a cotton delinating factory at Modinagar and a flour mill in Delhi.

1976A lasting legacy

On 22nd January 1976, Shri Modi left us. As per his wishes, the Laxmi Narayan temple in Modinagar became his final resting place. His funeral was attended by over 1 lakh people. It was a remarkable show of the love he commanded among common people. Shri Modi was survived by his wife, Smt. Dayawati Modi and 11 children (five sons and 6 daughters). Later, in 1994 the temple also became the final resting place of his beloved wife.

Shri Modi was not just a visionary, but also a pioneer in reforms that brought imperative social change. He played a vital role in the abolishment of sati, the encouragemt of widow remarriage and the reformation of dowry system.

Shri Modi held many important posts during his period. Apart from being the President of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), he was also the President of National Productivity Council.

Modipon was set up in collaboration with an American company, Rohm & Hass, long before alliances became a corporate buzzword. It thus established a wave of global collaborations in the years to come and became the hallmark of alliances for the corporate fraternity in India.

The prestigious Padma Bhushan was conferred on Shri Modi on 16th April, 1968 by the President of India, Dr. Zakir Hussain. The citation recognized his moving spirit in the fields of industry, social service, education & his singular contribution to the development of an integrated industrial township.

In Modipuram, another model township founded by Shri Modi near Meerut, was set up. It was an automobile tyre and tube factory (inaugurated by Shri Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed,the then President of India),in technical collaboration with Continental Gummi Werke A.G. Hannover, West Germany.

1975Birth ofModipuram

Shri Modi offered round-the-year employment to the harijan workers at his

factories and released them from bondage.

A pious man, he believed all religions were one and supported holy men

from all religions in renovating ruined places of worship.

His dying wish was to build a world class hospital which offered the best medical

care in India. It was out of that vision, that on his death anniversary 22 January 2013,

the Saket City Hospital was established.

In 1986, he set up the country’s first One Million Tons/PA capacity cement plant in Madhya Pradesh in collaboration with Blue Circle of UK. Thereafter, in 1990 he set up a large capacity diesel engine manufacturing company in collaboration with Mirrlees Blackstone of UK at Aurangabad, which has now merged with MAN Diesel & Turbo of Germany.

His accomplishments have been recognized by Central as well as State Governments. He is a member of Governing Body of the SIOS. This is evident from the fact that he was nominated by the Government to serve as a member of various committees.

He created a landmark in the history of Corporate India by rehabilitating MRL in 2008, which was closed in 2001 and declared sick in 2004.

With over 25 years of experience in the travel industry, Ritika possesses an in-depth understanding of the travel agency and airline landscape in India. She has hands-on knowledge of agency operations, finance, sales and marketing. Having worked with British Airways and KLM, Ritika started her own corporate travel agency, MOD Travel in the early nineties.

In 2000, Mrs. Modi started the “The Geographical Company” – an outbound tours division under an Israeli joint venture. Later in 2002, she launched UNIGLOBE Travel in India. In her current role as Regional President, UNIGLOBE Travel South Asia, Ritika heads the largest single brand travel franchise network in the South Asia region.

She leads a team of industry specialists and is responsible for strategic network development and provides a comprehensive business-building system to ensure UNIGLOBE Travel agencies remain competitive and successful. In her leadership, UNIGLOBE, in India, has grown to a size of 60 full service, travel management locations with an annualized turnover of over INR 3500 Crores.

In November 2004, Mrs. Modi launched the inbound tours division which operates under the brand name of ‘Unlimited India – The Tour Company’.

Ritika, a well-known figure in the travel industry and also supports a number of social causes leading a variety of projects involving child education and environment protection. Her latest philanthropic venture being Magnify, an NGO setup to magnify the power of education provided to children affected by economic or social factors, by training teachers with international standards for holistic development of children. Other initiatives include, a non-profit organization focused on counseling women and supporting them to pursue a career in travel.

With a capital investment of Rs 300 million, the company was incorporated in November 2012 and has its registered office in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. It is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and has the capacity to produce 4000 metric tons of resin-coated sand per month. The plant has the largest production capacity in India. Planning to further invest in the education sector by way of acquisition as well as setting up new schools, the group is looking to upgrade K-12 schools to the international level, expanding the reach of quality education to children in the upcoming Tier-II cities.

The Group has seized great potential in mechanised hollow brick technology, especially in view of the ban imposed by the regulatory authority with respect to pollution and emissions,

having initiated dialogue with the world leader in this space.

Also, the Group has recently entered a joint venture agreement with Marco Aldany, to establish a hair salon chain in collaboration with the latter, with the project set to commence operations by end of 2017.
