Franklin Delano Roosevelt Born into a wealthy, educated family Attended Harvard law Served as assistant secretary of the Navy In the early 1920’s Franklin was stricken with polio In 1928, elected governor of New York In 1933, Roosevelt was elected President of the United States, defeating President Herbert Hoover

Adolf Hitler Son of an Austrian customs official Hitler dropped out of school at age 14 Served in World War 1, winning the Iron Cross Hitler created the National Socialist Party On January 30, 1933 Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany

Roosevelt’s New Deal New Deal was the name that Roosevelt gave to complex package of economic programs he initiated Consisted of initiatives to decrease unemployment rates to strengthen the economy The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 was the last major program launched, which set maximum hours

and minimum wages for most categories of workers. Also forbade labor by children under sixteen Provisions applied only to workers engaged directly in interstate commerce

Roosevelt also set up the Agricultural Adjustment Act Law seeking to eliminate surplus from farm production and maintain crop prices

Farm Security Administration A new deal agency established in 1937 that offered loans to farm tenants and laborers Regulated the wages and hours of migrant workers Built model migrant camps and health clinics

Hitler’s new Germany When the Nazis came to power the most pressing issue was an unemployment rate of close to 30% Kraft Durch Freude(Strength through joy)

Founded in 1933 KDF helped finance workers vacations and provided other cultural benefits Part of the reason the people of Germany loved Hitler and the Third Reich

Hitler’s plan included the construction of dozens of dams, autobahns, railroads, and other civil works German leaders wanted war and used the economy to make war possible Germany became prosperous

Full employment Increased output Great economic expansion

This economical outburst resulted in a full strength Nazi Army which strived for world domination
