Mustang News “Learn, Achieve, Succeed, Contribute”
Ronald Wilson Reagan Middle School 15801 Tanning House Place| Haymarket, VA 20169 571.402.3500| 703.782.1638 (fax)
A Message from the Principal: Congratulations Students, Staff and Parents! We’ve made it through the first semester and we’ve had many wonderful highlights that are sure to be mentioned in this year’s Presidential Yearbook. Don’t miss out on your collectors edition, so place your order now. Our Mustangs did it again! As your proud principal, I am honored to share the
wonderful accomplishments of our talented students. Once again, we’ve had more
than 1000 to make either the Honor Roll (A/B average) or Principal’s Honor Roll (All
A’s). All of these students will receive a congratulatory letter and a magnetic Reagan
seal from the principal. Please be sure to congratulate them and display their magnet
on your vehicle with pride.
As we move into the second half of the year, it’s time to get geared up for the SOLs.
We have several support opportunities in place right now for our students to work on
targeted skills. Please encourage your child to take advantage of these opportunities.
We currently have math supports available before, during and after school. For more
information, please have your child to contact his/her math teacher. Please know all
of these services are optional, but highly encouraged.
A special congratulations goes out our newest published author, our very own, sixth
grade student, Claire Wilson, publishes her first novel. How amazing is that!
Team Washington Student, Claire Wilson, has published her first book, A Billion
Little Things Part One: Mistakes Can Be Deadly, in which the protagonist, Mary
Kodiak is stuck on an island with her entire fifth grade class. This 246 page novel is
full of twists and turns, and is available on Amazon for a mere $10.00. Claire, like
Mark Twain, has decided to use a pen name. So, when searching for this masterpiece,
look under the name Amanda McDermott. Our very own Claire will be providing a
brief seminar discussing her work and will be autographing copies in the library
sometime during the month of March, with a date yet to be confirmed. Please help
celebrate one of our own. Claire, you’re awesome!
Thanks to our wonderful PTSO, every Friday we are able to recognize our RIDER
card recipients by giving out a few small gift cards. At the end of quarter, we
recognized the students earning the most RIDER cards. We are getting geared up for
our 2nd IHOP breakfast. Congratulations to all students earning the RIDER award for
this nine weeks. None of this could be possible without the support of our wonderful
PTSO. Thank you PTSO for your support!
Mustang Pride!

formation will be communicated through school fusion and Black Board Connect
as the course selection dates approach.

your Family" presentation at Reagan Middle School. A parent information ses-
sion will be held on March 2 at 7 p.m. at Reagan Middle School. Individual
classroom lessons that will be co-taught by Mrs. Covell will follow and take place the week before

March 2 at 7 p.m. Internet Safety: Understanding the Risks for Your Family: For Parents Only
The Internet has drastically changed the way that children interact with the world. They have
access to tools which allow them to express their creativity with people from all over the
world. Yet along with offering a fascinating, new way to connect to the world, the Internet also offers
new risks: exposure to inappropriate material, cyberbullying, online predators and revealing too much
personal information.
The Reagan Middle School Administration Invites Special Agent Kristina Eyler to present some very
important facts about internet safety. Please join us on March 2, 2016 at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria and let’s
work together to keep our Mustangs safe!
Light refreshments will be served.
We love our students. However, GAME ON!!!!
Our student athletes are very good. However, we the staff are just a little bit
better. Come watch the Mighty Mustang Staff vs. Student basketball game
from 5-7 p.m. in the gymnasium on March 17. March 31 will be the
reschedule date if the wrestling or basketball season requires it. The staff will be
competing against the Girls and Boys Varsity teams. The girls' game will be held
first and as soon as most of the students can catch their breath, the boys game will
follow.

Helping Families in Any Language
In order to support families who speak all languages other than
English, PWCS will soon have available many important documents in
several languages. The school division is also working on an enhanced
Translation Services webpage that will allow families to complete a
questionnaire and request assistance in their own language. At every
school there will be a visible poster that will allow families to select a
language when they are in need of assistance in their language. Schools
will also have interpretation services available. Currently, the school
division website has an enhanced Google Translate feature that
provides instant translation assistance in dozens of languages. Note
that computer generated translations has its limitations, but this feature
moves us forward in serving the needs of our students in an increasing-
ly diverse community. Please feel free to contact the school if you are
in need of assistance in another language.
Safety Reminders
A change in going home for your student: Please remember to send a note and
have your child to report to office for a special pass to either walk home, go home
with a friend, or ride a different bus. We understand emergencies may come up. If and
when they do, please call our office to speak with an administrator.
Speed limits during this dismissal: Arr ival and dismissal of our students involves
staff assisting with traffic to ensure our student enter and leave the building safely.
Please drive very slowly once you enter the parking lots and remember to move
forward when directed.
Safety drills: we are required to have fire dr ills monthly. When possible, we
work around inclement weather and testing. However, drills are unannounced as we
must have authentic practices. When drills are conducted, ALL students and staff
must exit the building. If there are medical concerns, please make sure our school
nurse has this information on file.
Congratulations Honor Roll Students!
Continue to always do your best and know that your
hard work is appreciated and is your path towards
continued success!

With the two-hour delayed opening on February 9 and the Code Red on February 16, there
are now approximately 4 days remaining before we fall below Virginia-mandated instruc-
tional minimums. This balance already includes the School Board’s calendar change to
close schools on March 1 for the primary election.
The annual food show will be held on March 15 at Patriot High School, with two sessions
– one at 6 p.m. and the second at 7 p.m. Please help select lunch and breakfast items for
next year. You can reserve your seat by calling 703.791.7314.
8th Grade Writing SOL Updates
March 1, Schools Closed, but a Work Day for Some
The recent School Board decision to close schools for the March 1 primary election
means a day off for students, teachers, and many other employees, with no make-up
required. Also SACC and Next Generation extended day programs will be closed. Only
12-month (250 day) employees should report. Those required to work but preferring the
day off may follow normal procedures to make use of appropriate, available leave time.
SACC will be closed.
Congratulations Zoree Jones, Winner of the MLK Oratorical Contest. Thank you to Mr.

For safety and supervision reasons, students must have a pass to
walk or be driven to or from school. The appropriate pass can be
obtained by returning the enclosed permission form. Once a school
staff member has verified the form with a parent, either by phone
or in person, the appropriate pass will be issued to the student.
This form is also available on the school website. Students with-
out the appropriate pass will not be permitted to walk or be driven
home without a parent or guardian coming to the school’s main
office to sign them out.
How does this work? All walkers and car riders are given a lami-
nated pass to attach to their agenda. As they exit the building
through door #2, the staff member in charge will check for the pass
and allow for them to leave.
Driving and Walking to School
Next Generation After-School Program for Middle School Students:
Middle school youth need a safe place to have fun, hang out, and
learn.
Designed to help our working parents and engage our middle school
students, Next Generation is a place for middle-school students to safely
navigate the adolescent years and prepare for success in high school,
college, and beyond. The after-school program runs Monday - Friday
from scheduled school dismissal until 6:30 p.m. This hands-on and
student-centered program offers activities based on student choice and
voice. Next Generation programs strengthen social skills and character, in
a physically and emotionally safe environment. Students in grades six and
seven who have not reached their thirteenth birthday before August 31,
2015 may participate.
Dear Parents, Teachers, and Students,
We are half way thru the current school year and we personally wanted to reach out to all of you and
share that as a PTSO it is a privilege and honor to help support all of YOU! We are so impressed with
all of the students and staff that go the extra mile both academically and by participating in after school
activities both at school and on their own – whether it is sports, dance, music, theatre, science fairs, de-
bate teams… the list goes on. Reagan Mustangs ROCK – and they ROCK because of the great collabo-
ration between the parents, teachers, and students!
As a PTSO, in small ways we have been able to support some of these groups and clubs. In big ways,
we try and hold 3-4 large scale events for the kids to enjoy and participate in. We do all of these things
thru the sale of our spirit wear and membership dues. WE WANT TO DO MORE and WE HAVE
MORE TO DO – but we still need your help! WHAT CAN YOU DO (in your already busy schedule)?
1. I want to encourage all of you that if you are not yet a member of this year’s PTSO, IT’S
NOT TOO LATE…. Cost is only $10.00. Meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday of the
Month for one hour at 6:30 p.m. in the library. Remaining schedule is MAR 9, APR 13,
MAY 11, and JUN 8. If you cannot join us for these meetings – its OKAY, we understand –
but please know that they really are very informative and you definitely get a pulse on what
is happening in and around Reagan.
2. We are in the PRE-Planning/INTEREST Stages of a SPRING EVENT (no date yet) as well
as the 8th Grade Dance – which will be held on FRIDAY, JUN 3. In addition, this year the
school we will be holding a promotion ceremony. It is going to take a lot of hands to make
this happen. I’d like to encourage all of our 6th and 7th grade families to consider volunteer-
ing for this event once we have a date and more concrete info, in way of paying it forward
– so that the 8th grade families have an opportunity to enjoy the full event . Anyone who
thinks they “may” be interested in helping with any of these events – please contact us (info
will be below).
SPRING EVENT: MOVIE NIGHT: Date to BE DETERMINED
8th Grade Dance (Friday, June 3)
Speaking of contact, one of our main goals this year as a PTSO Board was and is to ensure that all par-
ents, teachers, and students have the ability to contact us, ask us questions, or support and have feed-
back given back to them in a timely manner. Our main email account is managed primarily by our Sec-
retary, Mrs. Angie Tarr – as she receives messages she notifies myself and/or our VP, Mrs. Erin
Sedgley. Emails are answered back within 24 hours. Feedback over this has been very positive. In addi-
tion, the PTSO re-activated a Reagan Facebook site. Again, Angie Tarr, primarily manages this ac-
count but members of the executive board have access to this as well. All of us post or answer ques-
tions on this account. With a new website and capabilities being brought on line by the county we may
integrate next year to a new way of communication but until the school year ends and thru the summer
you will be able to contact your board by emailing: [email protected] and not to be cliché but
we encourage you to “LIKE US ON FACEBOOK” @ www.facebook.com/rrms.ptso
Last but not least, I spoke above about how it is such a privilege for all of us to give back to the school,
the kids, teachers and staff…. But that’s not all…. Volunteering at the school this year has been such a

joy for all of us – whether a committee chair or one night parent volunteer to support an event! Mid-
dle School is such a neat and exciting time for kids to really come into one’s own – to see the trans-
formation of some of these students turning into young adults is really the coolest thing ever. With
elections coming up in the next year and all the negative talk about real problems our local govern-
ment and nation faces – I feel certain there is nothing our next generation of kids cannot resolve….
Reagan Kids take to heart the motto, “Learn, Achieve, Succeed, Contribute”!
In the next few months we will be reaching out again to all of you to consider taking on the reins of
next year’s PTSO BOARD! If you have any questions about what we do, time involved, or know
someone who would be a really good fit for a board or committee please contact us. If you have any
ideas on things we can do our offer we welcome your input as well.
Thanks for your time.
Kindest regards,
Desiree Moore

New year, new routines. Do you eat breakfast every day? If not, that’s a daily routine you should start.
Here are some Breakfast Basics brought to you by KidsHealth from Nemours
Why Bother With Breakfast?
Breakfast is a great way to give the body the refueling it needs. Kids who eat breakfast tend to eat
healthier overall and are more likely to participate in physical activities — two great ways to help
maintain a healthy weight.
Skipping breakfast can make kids feel tired, restless, or irritable. In the morning, their bodies need to
refuel for the day ahead after going without food for 8 to 12 hours during sleep. Their mood and energy
can drop by midmorning if they don't eat at least a small morning meal.
Breakfast also can help keep kids' weight in check. Breakfast kick-starts the body's metabolism, the
process by which the body converts the fuel in food to energy. And when the metabolism gets moving,
the body starts burning calories. Also, people who don't eat breakfast often consume more calories
throughout the day and are more likely to be overweight. That's because someone who skips breakfast
is likely to get famished before lunchtime and snack on high-calorie foods or overeat at lunch.
Making Breakfast Happen
It would be great to serve whole-grain waffles, fresh fruit, and low-fat milk each morning. But it can be
Clinic News
difficult to make a healthy breakfast happen when you're rushing to get yourself and the kids ready in the
morning and juggling the general household chaos.
So try these practical suggestions to ensure that — even in a rush — your kids get a good breakfast before
they're out the door:
stock your kitchen with healthy breakfast options
prepare as much as you can the night before (gets dishes and utensils ready, cut up fruit, etc.)
get everyone up 10 minutes earlier
let kids help plan and prepare breakfast
have grab-and-go alternatives (fresh fruit; individual boxes or baggies of whole-grain, low-sugar
cereal; yogurt or smoothies; trail mix) on days when there is little or no time to eat
If kids aren't hungry first thing in the morning, be sure to pack a
breakfast that they can eat a little later on the bus or between clas-
ses. Fresh fruit, cereal, nuts, or half a peanut butter and
banana sandwich are nutritious, easy to make, and easy for kids to
take along.
If kids aren't hungry first thing in the morning, be sure to pack a
breakfast that they can eat a little later on the bus or between
classes. Fresh fruit, cereal, nuts, or half a peanut butter and banana sandwich are nutritious, easy to make, and
easy for kids to take along.
You also may want to check out the breakfasts available at school or daycare. Some offer breakfasts and pro-
vide them for free or at reduced prices for families with limited incomes. If your kids eat breakfast outside
the home, talk with them about how to make healthy selections.
What not to serve for breakfast is important too. Sure, toaster pastries and some breakfast bars are portable,
easy, and appealing to kids. But many have no more nutritional value than a candy bar and are high in sugar
and calories. Read the nutrition labels carefully before you toss these breakfast bars and pastries into your
shopping cart.

Brrrr. It’s getting cold outside.
When the weather is extremely cold, and especially if there are high winds, try to stay indoors. Make any trips
outside as brief as possible, and remember these tips below to protect your health and safety.
Dress Warmly and Stay Dry
Adults and children should wear:
a hat
a scarf or knit mask to cover face and mouth
sleeves that are snug at the wrist
mittens (they are warmer than gloves)
water-resistant coat and boots
several layers of loose-fitting clothing
Be sure the outer layer of your clothing is tightly woven, preferably wind resistant, to reduce
body-heat loss caused by wind. Wool, silk, or polypropylene inner layers of clothing will hold more
body heat than cotton. Stay dry—wet clothing chills the body rapidly. Excess perspiration will
increase heat loss, so remove extra layers of clothing whenever you feel too warm. Also, avoid
getting gasoline or alcohol on your skin while de-icing and fueling your car or using a snow blower.
These materials in contact with the skin greatly increase heat loss from the body. Do not ignore
shivering. It’s an important first sign that the body is losing heat. Persistent shivering is a signal to
return indoors.
