Community Remedy Have your say On Monday 7 July I launched a public consultation asking residents for opinions on a new Community Remedy document that will give victims of crime a greater say in how anti-social behaviour and low level crime is dealt with
The Community Remedy document is a list of actions which the victim may choose for the perpetrator to undertake in consequence of their behaviour or offending As part of the consultation I am asking members of the public just three short questions about the Community Remedy document You can get involved by
Website telephone To provide feedback on my website please visit httpwwwdurham-pccgovukGet-InvolvedPublic-Consultationsaspx or for a hardcopy please contact my office on 03000 264631

PCC discusses internet safety with Year 7 pupils
Internet safety issues were up for discussion when I met with secondary school pupils at Shotton Hall Academy in Peterlee on 17th June along with local PCSO Sharon Bowman
After our visit Shotton Hall Academy added the following article to schools website
Today we welcomed two very important visitors to the academy to talk to our students about how important it is to stay safe on the Internet
Ronald Hogg the Durham Police and Crime Commissioner and Sharon Bowman a Police Community Support Officer spoke to our Year 7 students to open their eyes to the dangers of
the internet Team Potential also got the opportunity to talk to both our special guests as they enjoyed breakfast together
Huge thanks to Ronald and Sharon for giving up their time to come to the academy and hope to see you again soon
Teenager has an unusual escort to his school prom
A proud school teacher from Hummersknott Academy wrote to me earlier this month asking if I could help as Police and Crime Commissioner in arranging an escort for a remarkable young man Kieran Maxwell to his school prom
Kieran unfortunately fell ill at the age of 12 when he was diagnosed with Ewingrsquos Sarcoma a rare form of cancer and has subsequently undergone 3-4 years of intense treatment including an amputation due to the tumours that he has suffered that were untreatable
Kieran had dreamed of joining the police and his teacher asked in the letter if I could arrange a police escort to take him to his prom on Friday 11th
July
My thanks go to the police officers who volunteered their own time out of work to escort Kieran this resulted in a heart-

Increased motorway fines may not be the right answer
The maximum fine for speeding on the motorway is set to be quadrupled to pound10000 a decision which I recently announced to the media may not the best deterrent to tackle speeding
The Government recently announced the increase in fines as part of sweeping reforms to the penalties which can be imposed by magistrates
I believe the greater deterrent is the potential for short-term bans rather than increased fines It is the loss of the right to drive that concerns most motorists Additionally any sanction ought to be linked to speed awareness training Speeding is a very emotive subject something we are working hard to address locally in County Durham and Darlington
Support for Neighbourhood Watch Week
This year the National Neighbourhood amp Home Watch Week focussed on fraud and cybercrime Working with Durham Constabulary I gave my support to the national campaign with key messages being delivered throughout the week
While fraudsters may not have an obvious presence on the streets like burglars or bogus callers neighbours can still help to protect each other from becoming victims of fraud The week was a brilliant opportunity raise awareness helping communities to be more aware of fraud and cybercrime
Neighbourhood Watch schemes bring people together and can make a real contribution to tackling and solving local problems I am pleased to see that more than 1000 Durham residents have recently signed up as new Neighbourhood Watch members after a recent police recruitment drive as part of the lsquoChallenge 1000rsquo and I would encourage more people to get involved For more information call 101 and ask for Tim Thompson on ext 668 2814
New power launched to help save victims of domestic violence
Domestic Violence Protection Orders (DVPOs) provide protection to victims by enabling the police and magistrates to put in place protection in the immediate aftermath of a domestic violence incident
An official launch event was held on 30th June along with the PCCs for Cleveland and Northumbria This is a positive step forward for the protection of victims and an exciting new initiative in tackling domestic abuse Durham Constabulary will have 13 dedicated safeguarding DVPO officers who will work in partnership with the courts and support services to enable us to protect our most vulnerable victims The new powers will also provide victims with some much needed breathing space and additional protection to safeguard themselves from perpetrators of domestic abuse

Ministry of Justice funding secured I am delighted to confirm that I recently secured funding worth pound142000 for four worthwhile projects which support my policing priorities
1Working with people with mental health problems 2Working with victims of domestic violence 3Creating a video link between the force and court rooms 4Establishing a victim interview room in Bishop Auckland Hospital
I thought very carefully about which projects I felt we should seek funding for given the various demands placed upon policing This funding will directly help individuals to cope with either being a victim of crime or improve their quality of life The funding needs to be spent by March 2015 so residents of County Durham and Darlington will benefit from these improvements in the very near future
Rape alert over private hire free-for-all plans Along with my counterparts across the country PCCs nationally have warned that there could be an increased risk of people being raped and sexually assaulted after a night out due to plans to cut red tape for taxi and private hire drivers PCCs are now working together to lobby parliament to remove the dangerous measures from the Deregulation Bill
Our concerns are backed by licensing officials police the taxi trade and organisations that work with victims of rape and sexual assault
The current licensing system in County Durham and Darlington has rigorous controls in place to minimise the risk of any harm caused to individuals and vulnerable people using taxi services I would agree with the concerns that removing the requirement for a person to drive a private hire vehicle without a license would have the potential to expose the public to danger I am committed to working in partnership and ensure we protect our communities and bring any perpetrators who may prey on individuals to justice
Tougher rules welcomed for payday lenders I recently announced in the media that I welcome additional rules which came into force on 1 July which are designed to deter lenders from offering loans to borrowers who cannot afford to repay them over the original term and to protect those who struggle with repayments from incurring spiralling costs
I have previously given my support to local campaigns aimed at encouraging people to turn away from loan sharks and to report the crime if they have been a victim
The new rules which took effect this week provide stricter controls for larger organisations giving additional support to individuals who use their services That being said I am continuing to work with partners to tackle illegal money lending particularly loan sharks who often appear friendly at first but quickly trap their borrowers into spiralling debt
We want our communities to feel safe and confident therefore talking to a credit union is a much better and safer alternative to loan sharks and payday lenders

Neighbour Cleans up her Act was presented at the POP awards with the Chief Constable Mr Barton
The occupant of a property in Chester le Street was involved in incidents of ASB This led to an
increase in police resources attending the address and surrounding area Other persons attending the property were also causing ASB and Noise Nuisance at all times of the day and night affecting the quality of life for local residents As a result of ASB from the address on 15th October 2010 an application for a Section 222 Injunction was granted by the courts which had a Power of Arrest attached to expire 27 March 2012 (Further extension granted to expire on 27 Sept 2012) The occupant ended up with a custodial sentence as they broke the terms of the Injunction on several occasions With intervention from Police Durham County Council and Partnerships the number of incidents dramatically reduced and the problem now solved
Feedback from the local community has been very positive and residents are delighted with the positive outcomes

Peterlee gets World Cup Fever
Officers from Peterlee Neighbourhood Policing Team have been getting in on the excitement created by the World Cup despite the disappointment of Englandrsquos results There was still a lot of interest in the tournament and in particular the
craze for World Cup sticker books
PCSO Andy Gilhooley from the team is a lifelong collector and picked up on the large number of young people talking about stickers and the number of websites being used to arrange to swop stickers The team have been using this excitement to get messages out about internet safety and child sexual exploitation raising the awareness of the ldquoSafeguardingrdquo information on Durham Constabularys website and showed a short video about internet safety with people taking part in a quiz and receiving Panini stickers for those with winning answers
The team arranged a number of events in Peterlee supported by Castledene Shopping Centre where people can come together to swop cards in a safe environment with over 150 people coming to the first event Panini agreed to support the event by providing free cards as well as Walkers who provided crisps to give away at the events SAFC Foundation were also on hand to talk about football courses over the summer
Community engagement with Stanley Neighbourhood Policing Team
Craghead Fun Day Everyone had a great time at the Craghead Fun Day which was held on the 14th June We were dog- chipping and handing out free poo bags whilst handing out literature for the Durham County Council Green Dog Walkers
Scheme which encourages responsible dog ownership We also had a friendly 5 a side competition that was known locally as lsquoKick a Copperrsquo and a Tug o War competition
Mr Kevan Jones MP made an appearance with his lovely Labrador lsquoBiffrsquo and Tweeted a picture of us chipping a dog The free chipping is something we do as volunteers for the dog re-homing charity lsquoStray Aidrsquo
In bloom competition We are also entering our section office for several lsquoin bloomrsquo competitions ndash like lsquoBlooming good funrsquo A great deal of work has been completed by our volunteer Ronnie Allaker and various schools including Tanfield Comp and Greenlands Primary If we win we will get some gardening vouchers so that we can do a similar project at the main Station in Stanley with St Josephs School nearby and possibly The Academy
Making sure the office looks nice instils a sense of pride and feel good factor in the community whilst giving us chance to engage with children at an early age whilst getting our hands dirty

Darlington litter pick helps promote community confidence
On 13th June PCC Ron Hogg took part in a litter pick in Darlington with pupils from Corporation Road Primary School and was joined by police officers from Darlington and Jenny Chapman MP
The initiative is part of a pilot project launched by Durham Constabulary in Darlington and Seaham which aims to get residents more involved in the well-being of their communities
We want to get communities involved in taking greater responsibility for their area and what we have found is that activity such as this helps to increase community confidence The attitude of the children was tremendous their enthusiasm was absolutely fantastic and if we can keep that up it will make the area better for everyone into the future
Deneside Fun Day in Seaham
Officers from Seaham NPT have been working alongside residents in Deneside Seaham with a view to improving relationships with Police and improving where they live
Working alongside Mutual Gain officers from the area we have been working closely with residents on ways to improve the area Focus groups were held with different groups of residents from the area a recurring theme was that they wanted a play park for the children
It was agreed that a disused field would be the location for a community day a litter pick was organised by the residents to ensure the field would be safe The community day was organised with the residents in conjunction with Durham County Councilrsquos Area Action Partnership and was held on 21st June on Ryton Crescent field
Children enjoyed free activities including bouncy castles rodeo bull penalty shoot-out and much more Residents had the chance to talk about their area and how they would like to improve it play parks and football facilities being on most peoples agenda
The community raised over pound750 at the event which will be used for future projects Residents will have a chance to meet up in the next few weeks to discuss future projects A big thank you to all the residents who took part a brilliant day had by all

This year the National Neighbourhood amp Home Watch Week focussed on fraud and cybercrime Working with Durham Constabulary I gave my support to the national campaign with key messages being delivered throughout the week

Peterlee gets World Cup Fever
Officers from Peterlee Neighbourhood Policing Team have been getting in on the excitement created by the World Cup despite the disappointment of Englandrsquos results There was still a lot of interest in the tournament and in particular the

Local policing news
Chester-le-Street officers in Durham Goes POP Awards Officers from Chester Le Street took part in the annual Durham Goes POP Awards Final ldquoCelebrating Effective Practice amp Inspiring Confidence Within Our Communitiesrdquo Nuisance
