CREDITS & SOURCES

NOTESFor nearly two centuries, there was no contact between the forces of the United Federation of Planets and those of theRomulan Star Empire. As a result, information about Romulan vessels is sparse at best. However, it is clear thatRomulan vessel classifications are extremely complex, and seem to be based upon whichever shipyard constructedthe vessel. The common “V” nomenclature refers to the starstation Vascalanam which serves as the Romulan ImperialNavy’s headquarters as well as its primary construction yard. I.R.C. is “Imperial Romulan Cruiser” and I.R.W. is “ImperialRomulan Warbird.” The rare R.F.T. is “Romulan Free Trader,” a ship ostensibly independent of the Romulan military orgovernment. Some smaller vessels appear to serve in this loose association of merchants, while others are clearlymilitary in nature.

It has been suggested that Romulan spies managed to retrieve information on Federation starships. This theory wasaugmented by the discovery that Romulans are an off-shoot of the Vulcan race, and that they had indeed infiltrated intoFederation society. However, while similar in design to starships of the United Federation of Planets, Romulan vesselscould not match their Federation counterparts in speed and weaponry. Until 2269, their engines were simple impulse, capable of faster-than-light but at nowhere near the velocities the Federation warp drive could produce. Their weapon ofchoice, the plasma bolt, though capable of pursuing a target at high speed, had a limited range. Their primary successin technology has been the development of their cloaking technology which allows their starships to become invisible. While means have been developed to track cloaked vessels, those means are no way totally successful. The KlingonD-7 battlecruiser as well as the D-7C k’t’inga battlecruiser are also used by the Romulan Star Empire as the result of analliance between the two empires in 2268. The Klingons received cloaking technology from the Romulans, and theRomulans received advanced starship engineering from the Klingons. In 2278, it was determined that Romulans haddeveloped singularity-drives and singularity-powered starships. Thus equipped, newer Romulan vessels are morethan a match in terms of speed to their Federation counterparts. Like their Klingon counterparts, Romulan vessels arecontinually testing Federation defenses, testing their newest cloaking devices while probing for an opportunity to strikea devastating blow. Virtually all Romulan vessels are capable of landing on the surfaceof any given planet. This isbecause they did not develop transporter technology on their own, and are believed to have stolen that technologyfrom the Federation some time after 2266.

The Romulans, also a war-like race, are:more organized and logical than the Klingons. They pride themselves on their

intellect, but avoid considering themselves clever, despite the fact their forces seem to concentrate on subterfuge, secrecy and setting traps for unsuspecting starships. Romulan starships are manned by experienced crews consistingof both men and women, in virtually equal numbers. All Romulan children (males and females) are expected to servea tour of duty in their military. As a result, it can be expected to find a female commander aboard one of their starships.Romulan society is devoted to service to the Empire and the Praetor. Romulans consider themselves superior to theother sentient races throughout their region of the galaxy, including Klingons and Humankind.

CRUISERS

This class of vessel was the first detected by the Federation duringthe incursion of 2266. With its plasma torpedoes and cloakingdevice, a single ship of this type destroyed several Federationoutposts and nearly destroyed a Constitution-class heavy cruiserin combat. Starship captains must not make the mistake ofassuming an easy victory against a lesser opponent. Romulans

are excellent tacticians.

STATIONS & MISCELLANEOUS CRAFT

Containers are unmanned cargo pods that are carried bytransports. Transports are capable of carrying up to 6containers at a time, but each container carried reduces thevessel’s maximum possible speed.

Illustrated here is a standardconfiguration of a transport with twocontainers. The surface of the “wings”of the transport is lined with tractor fieldgenerators.
