Romila Thapar is Professor Emerita at the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. In 2008, she was awarded the John W. Kluge Prize in the Human Sciences for lifetime achievement in the humanistic and social sciences. She is the recipient of Honorary Doctorates from the University of Oxford, Edinburgh University, the University of Chicago, the University of Calcutta, Peradeniya University (Sri Lanka) and SNDT Women‘s University (Mumbai). In this lecture, Romila Thapar discusses broader themes related to the colonial period and the nationalist reaction in India. Thapar will address the gradual change in the study of ancient Indian history from a topic of Indology to an aspect of social science.
