Newspaper Assignment Teacher Hints

I find it is helpful to brainstorm some of the major events of the play in order

to get some students get started. This is a great opportunity to review the

themes, characters, and smaller events of the play.

I find I get better results from the students if they “report” on one event—for

example an article on Mercutio’s death is going to be more captivating than an

article that tries to summarize the entire story.

Encourage the students to think like a reporter from the time period. What

slant or bias would they bring to their reporting? Who do the townspeople

support—the Capulets or the Montegues?

If you and your students have access to MS Publisher there are many different

templates they can use to create a digital version and I’ve included 3 editable

MS Word templates.

Extension Ideas

Have students complete additional pages of the newspaper. They could

interview people to see what they think of the two families, write about the

play from a fashion perspective, present some aspects as if they were writing a

sports article…

Have students work in partners or a small group to create an entire

newspaper—they could decide what articles they would each write and then

work together to compile one newspaper with multiple pages.

Encourage students to use “Shakespearean” language and phrases.

Have fun!

What Do I Need To Do?

The Town Crier

You are the a newspaper reporter who has been following the recent

events between the Capulets and the Montagues. You’ve decided to

do a newspaper feature and will dedicate the entire front page of the

paper to the conflict.

Your newspaper MUST have the following:

A title banner with the creative name of your paper, the

date, the price etc.

A main article that fully covers the details of the event.

Make sure you have paragraphs.

An advertisement with prices and items appropriate to the

time period. (Ex. There were no mp3 players back then…)

At least one small article to fill in the empty space.

A picture with a caption. (Can be hand-drawn or from the

internet)

Look at a modern day newspaper for formatting ideas.

Helpful Hints

Remember, newspapers are written in 3rd Person - don’t use “I” or “me” except

when directly quoting someone.

Newspapers answer the questions—who, what, where, when and why??

Why not interview a minor character to get their perspective?

What do you think the Nurse would say if given the chance?

Who will your newspaper blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet?

What extra features might your newspaper offer??

Newspapers articles work best if they focus on one specific event rather than try to

summarize the entire play.

Newspaper articles are always well edited for spelling and grammar mistakes.
