We live in a home that has rulesabout soccer goals in the dining room and overuses
adages like “You can never have too many hugs and
kisses.” A bookshelf I originally designed with
stylistic precision has become a place to store mot-
ley rock collections, artwork and broken toys my
son Luc cannot forego.
When we’re trying to get off to school, there is
a mad departure. I return to a quiet house,
the light casting gorgeous spotlights on the
furniture, and I pounce on the day’s deadlines. I
miss Luc immediately.
I am loyal to my bank despite competitors that
entice with better rates and hours because the
friendly teller knows that strawberry is Luc’s
favorite lollipop. Luc insists on eating his breakfast
from a chipped ironstone bowl printed with farm
scenes, while I am partial to a granny teaspoon
for all my meals because the tablespoon could do
double duty as a gardening shovel.
We choose imperfection over what is touted as
better, shinier or newer. There is a comfort in
blemished things that have become the corner-
stones of our daily life. In our home, my designer’s
eye may have lost ground to my heart, but the
sense I have that I’m walking into and living in a
comfortable home has never been stronger.

Birthday Wishes
Share with us!
MY DAUGHTER’S 21ST BIRTHDAY WAS THEMED AS A SHABBY ROMANTIC PROMPARTY. I did not buy any décor but searched my home for items I had previouslybought from various yard sales. The tablecloth is the back of a quilt with some ruffledcurtains placed on top. I used lace curtains and vintage dresses as a backdrop andcrafted a birthday banner from leftover scrapbook paper. I made some of the treats too, including the cupcakes and cameo candies. Though it took various trips up and downthe back steps carrying everything, it was well worth it. My daughter loved theparty so much—it was her favorite one!

Banish fears of using color, and wash your walls with a happyhue. This pale pink perfectly complements the light-hued bedding, a pairing that enlivens the room with feminine cheerand color without overwhelming the eye. The headboard, upholstered in a comfortable yellow fabric, creates just the rightamount of separation so that both the wall color and bedding canbe appreciated.
Patterns and soft linens are the basics of any well-made bed. This floral bedding is broken up by a white blanket, whichkeeps the space feeling bright rather than overwhelmed byflorals. The layers of linens are also practical for the slow shiftfrom cool summer nights to crisp autumn evenings.
These handy surfaces keep journals, eyeglasses and morewithin arm’s reach, but practical can certainly be pretty too.Add personality and a dose of color by setting a uniquenightstand by your bed. This detailed piece dons a high-glosswhite that reflects light and adds a subtle touch of vintagestyle. Look for a unique table at your local flea market orantiques shop.
Whether a large window fills the room with sunshine or lampsare used to supplement natural light, the way a bedroom is lit cangreatly affect its overall feel. This cheerfully bright room featuressconces on either side of the bed that supplement natural light.By mounting lights with adjustable arms you can control just howmuch light falls where, ideal for casting the perfect light over bedtime reading.
Create the feel of a garden-inspired escape with hints of floralsin bedding and artwork, but never underestimate the impact of a few real blooms. These fresh hues, soft textures and casualstyling create an aesthetic that invites complete relaxation.

THE DAYS OF OUTDOOR LIVINGbegin to come to a close in September, when the air turnscooler and the sun sets earlier. It isa good time to begin featheringthe nest, fluffing the pillows andmaking home a bit cozier. Create astate of blissful relaxation perfectfor fall with simple updates thatwill pamper all five senses.
Lighting is key in setting the rightmood. A soft, warm light can createa calm atmosphere and encouragerelaxation. A simple way to warmthe lights is to re-cover an existinglampshade with a piece of vintagelace. You can easily attach the lacewith a few cleverly placed straightpins. Another quick and easy wayto add romantic ambiance is tolight a few candles. Dress jar can-dles with a piece of ribbon orscrap of lace, but be sure the fabriccannot come into contact withthe flame.
The sense of smell is one of the mostthought provoking of the senses. Alight, pleasing fragrance can evokehappy memories and foster a sooth-ing environment. Scent the air inyour home with a store-bought orhomemade potpourri. You can addessential oils to refresh potpourri orembellish it with dried flowers, fruitsand spices. Select dried goods fortheir scents as well as their colors tocoordinate with your home.

Next time you are ready for a cup of hot tea, make it more than a quick break. Instead, createtime for tea. Sometimes you just need to go theextra step to turn an ordinary moment into amini celebration. Spruce up a plain cup of teawith a cinnamon stick and orange rind, and then add a slice of your favorite sweet treat onthe side. Now that quick cup of tea is a more enjoyable teatime.

As the air grows cooler, it is time to digout a few blankets. There is nothingbetter than snuggling into a soft blan-ket that smells as good as it feels. Takethe time to fluff blankets in the dryerwith a few fragrant dryer sheets. Onceblankets are refolded and stacked, tuckscented sachets between the layers. You can also hang bundles of driedflowers, like lavender, in your linen clos-ets. It is said that lavender promotesrestful sleep and good dreams!
Once the lighting is dimmed, the air isfresh, your tea has filled you and theblankets are fluffed, all that is left is toslip into a dream state on the notes of aserene lullaby. Sounds or songs arehelpful in creating a pleasant and restful ambiance. Surround yourselfwith soft melodic tunes or gentle nature sounds, and be prepared for theultimate in leisure and relaxation.

Bath Time Make your own spa-worthy salts.
Ingredients:• 1 cup Epsom salts• ¼ cup sea salts• 3 Tablespoons baking soda• 1 Tablespoon finely ground regular oatmeal• 3 teaspoons brown sugar• 1 teaspoon cinnamon• ½ teaspoon ground ginger• ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
Directions:1. Combine all ingredients.2. Stir until well blended, making sure to break up
any clumps of brown sugar.3. Store in a clean, dry container with a tight-
fitting lid.4. Add 2 Tablespoons of the bath salts to a
warm tub of water and enjoy!
1. Follow the bath salts recipe. Mix together the salts, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger and cloves.
2. Add 1 cup of oil of your preference, such as baby, olive, almond or jojoba oil.
3. Add 5 drops of an essential oil, such as almond or lavender.
4. Add dried lavender and orange peels that have been finely chopped or ground.
5. Mix well and store in an airtight container.
Body scrubs work best on dry skin. Shake well before each use, as the salts tend to settle on thebottom. Exfoliate dry skin by rubbing a generousspoonful of the mixture onto feet, heels, knees andelbows. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.
• Do not use this on your neck, face or on sensitiveskin. Spices can be irritating to sensitive skin.
• The salt scrub mixture can leave surfaces such astubs and showers slippery. Be sure to clean all surfaces well after each use.

DIRECTIONS:
{1} Prepare a good-sized work area, such as a table.
{2} Unfurl the blinds and decide how many slats will actuallybe displayed and need covering. For a smaller window asshown, I needed to cover 21 slats and then shortened theblinds following the manufacturer’s guidelines.
{3} For each slat, you will need to cut three pieces of paper towork around the cording: two pieces for each end and one forthe center. Measure the lengths and widths needed for thesethree strips, and know that slight adjustments and trimmingmay be needed.
{4} There will be quite a bit of cutting, so decide on the bestmethod for you. I have a guillotine-style paper cutter, so Itrimmed sections of wallpaper small enough to cut on my pa-per cutter. You can also use a rotary cutter or a long ruler andmatte knife, or draw lines and trim carefully with a sharp scis-sors. I recommend cutting all of your pieces at once. Example:20 slats will need 20 center strips and 40 end strips.
{5} Position the paper on each slat one piece at a time and affixwith glue. Press firmly and allow the glue to set before hangingthe blinds.
{6} Enjoy your one-of-a-kind window treatment!

WHEN DECORATING MY HOME, I PRIDE MYSELF ON USING unusual vintage objects.I’m always on the hunt for something thatspeaks to me, even though it might mean Ineed to rearrange a vignette or say goodbye tosomething I already own.
This piece, however, will always remain withme. A friend, Sue, and I spotted the cabinet exactly as pictured, and it was on sale for halfprice! Though it was still pretty pricey, my friendsaid to me, “If you don’t buy it, I will!” Naturally, Ihad to own it, and since she didn’t have roomfor it, there was no need to negotiate.
The cabinet measures 80 inches wide by 68inches high, and it is plenty deep and roomyenough to store everything for all my entertain-ing needs. It holds four sets of dishes, vintageteacups, adorable mismatched dessert plates, platters, goblets, glasses and even tall Christmasdécor. Who wouldn’t love this amazing andpractical piece of furniture?

A beautifully designed home requiresimagination, personal style and a keeneye for the unexpected. This is the design foundation for homeownersGina Dadian-Peck and her husband,Gary, from Boulder City, Nevada, whoturned their desert cottage into a com-fortable and glamorous oasis. Gina and Gary have redefined shabbystyle by coupling salvage-yard cast-offsand industrial elements in unpredictableways. “I am a flea-market junkie,” Ginasays. “My husband and I travel frequentlyto large flea markets in California to findchippy, vintage goodies. Five years ago, Mika and
Paula Makipelto set out to find a piece
of land where they could build a dream
home for their family. With visions of
perfection and a baby on the way, their
plans changed when they stumbled
across a pre-existing home. “We had
long dreamt of building our own house,
but we realized that building a house
with small children around would be
too demanding,” Paula says.
Settling In The house was available for the family
to move in on the same day their son
Nooa was due. Mika and Paula packed
up the furniture from their previous
home and attempted to settle in to the
new space. Moving from a two-
bedroom apartment into a 1,830-
square-foot home, the couple felt the
new home seemed slightly empty, so
they began hunting for suitable second-
hand furnishings.
All of the walls, along with the
fireplace, were painted white. This
whitewashed look made the family feel
at home in a casual and bright environ-
ment. “White is compatible with
“Baking is the thing that I do with mychildren. The kids have their own hobbies,
but baking is what brings us together.”
Dough TherapyBaking brings this family
together, creating memories in a well-utilized space.
Cinnamon rolls, chocolate cakes, meringues and savory pies bring the
family together many times throughoutthe week. “Baking sweet buns involves
some kind of magic; I think of it asdough therapy,” Paula says.
The children use the dining table astheir personal baking station, whichhelps the family to maximize their
kitchen space. Paula hangs their smallaprons partly as décor and partly forfunctionality on display nearby. Thechildren can easily grab their aprons
when needed, and when not in use, theaprons lend their pastel hues to the
home’s color palette.

everything—styles, patterns and furni-
ture. We chose white for the solid wood
kitchen cabinets and the staircase, too,”
Paula says. Small changes turned a not-
so-perfect house into the home the
family had longed for. “Looking back,
we know we made the right decision
when we chose to move in here instead
of building a dream house. We’ve been
able to enjoy spending time with our
children,” Paula says.
Finding Their Style“At first I decorated the house in a
rustic romantic style. Everything was
white and romantic with frills and lace,”
Paula says. A year ago she decided to try
something new, incorporating more
pastel colors into her design for a look
that would elicit an upbeat feel.
“Many of our furnishings were bought
at flea markets. Such good buys are fun
to redo in your own way—with
turquoise paint, for example,” Paula says.
While white still prevails, Paula has
introduced just a few other colors
through accents and limited wallpaper.
“It seems that I have almost uncon-
sciously joined the white with pink,
purple, turquoise, mint and pale blue.”
Handcrafted accents, including
custom-made streamers and blankets
from a friend, fill the home and help to
bring in subtle doses of color. “I’ve been

they’re all over the house. The colors

style of Rie Elise Larsen and Bungalow.”
Adding Personality Paula has learned that personalizing
her home doesn’t necessarily mean
renovation. She customizes rooms with
textiles, dishes and cushions. By switch-
ing out accent pieces and fabrics, Paula
is able to continuously update the
personality of her home.
Aside from these easy switches,
bargain hunting also helps her add
personality and update her home. “I’m
just wild about flea markets; in fact, I
try to pop into nearby ones after work
to check out the selection. These days I
am collecting tins, wood baskets and
vintage Arabia cups. I never walk away
from a rag rug. If I see one, it always
comes along,” Paula says.
“Sometimes I find great stuff for the
kids, too. My best flea-market treasures
include a plant poster—I was dreaming
about it for a long time—and a china
cabinet for our living room. My favorites
are the pastel GreenGate dishes and toys
collected for the children.”
While her renovation-free projects
have helped to make their house a
home, Paula is not without plans for

more structural improvements. “I still
dream about a wooden floor painted
white. To be honest … I have many
other home improvement dreams too:
changing the kitchen countertops,
renovating the sauna, building a glass
veranda and a greenhouse as well as a
gazebo,” she says. Her inspiration for
these projects is more than aesthetics.
Paula hopes to complete these projects
to create more space for family activities.

Selina and her graphicdesigner husband, Dave, rent
this one-bedroom flat in the center of Surbiton,
Greater London. They have lived in the flat for
two years and love that they are in a good area
for commuting into London and have the
Thames River at the end of their street.
Living RoomI like to create personal spaces where
collectibles and personal bits are on display. In
our living room, vintage lace tablecloths from
my wedding reception are reused as pretty sofa
covers. I have simply folded and wrapped the
tablecloths over the sofa base and around the
seat cushions and used out-of-sight gaffer tape
to secure them in place. This is not a durable
cover, but it is easy to take off to wash, and you
can change the style of the sofa easily by trying
this with different fabrics. Sometimes I use a
patchwork of floral fabrics for a fun look. I have
made most of the pillows on the sofa using vin-
tage fabrics and my trusty sewing machine.
The print above the couch was a wedding
present from my sister, and I have draped
Cable & Cotton string lights over it. My love
of vintage fabrics continues: I have reused
secondhand floral curtains on both windows.
Using two pairs of different prints adds to the
style. Who says all curtains in the same room
have to match? I bought the leather poufs in
Morocco, and they are perfect for putting
our feet up and as extra seating when we
have guests.
Dining TableAbove our table is a display of vintage china
on a plate rack made by my dad. I have also put
up some framed prints from Bold & Nobel,
Keep Calm Gallery and Kiss Her. I like display-
ing flowers in a collection of vases, and here I
have used some vintage china jugs to display a
mix of flowers, including my favorites, David
Austin Roses.

Vintage ChinaFor years I’ve been a collector of vintage
china and now have a large collection of
plates and teacups that I regularly use.
I also reuse some pieces, like the pretty
floral plate that sits on my dressing table to
store my jewels, a mini-saucer that doubles
as my soap dish in the bathroom and cake
plates that act as risers for plant pots.
My teacups have various uses too. I like
to eat my breakfast porridge from one, and
serve nuts and olives in others when we
have guests over. Plus, they are the perfect
size for serving two scoops of ice cream! I
also use them as vases, placing a single
flower in each cup.
Craft TableNot everyone is lucky enough to have a
separate craft space or sewing room,
including me. The dining table doubles as
my crafting studio when I’m working on a
project, such as sewing pillows for my sofa,
making mini-buntings or creating props
for my styling work and photo shoots. I try
to keep my craft supplies organized in
various old tins and jars, so they are easy
to get out when I’m in a creative mode.
I buy china second-hand from thrift
shops or markets andhave a rule not to pay
more than $5 for apiece, unless I simply
can’t resist!
RH-1409-56-67-SelinaLake.qxp 7/7/14 10:41 PM Page 61
Office Space Working as an interior stylist on a free-
lance basis means I split my time between
being on photo shoots, shopping for props,
attending meetings and working from
home. My desk is situated in our open-plan
living room and kitchen area and is next to
the double doors, which open out onto our
garden. I found the little table I use as my
desk at a flea market. The chair is an origi-
nal Ercol chair, which I bought from a thrift
shop for a mere $7—a total bargain!
My office space needs to be practical, so I
opted for a white metal filing cabinet from
Ikea to house press releases, catalogs and
brochures. I store leftover wallpaper rolls
and giftwrap in an old bucket next to my
desk, and I repurposed a kitchen towel
holder as storage for my selection of tapes.
Above my desk I have displayed one of my
favorite vintage plates as well as prints by
Clare Owen, which are taped on the wall,
and a framed floral print by Fifi Mandirac.
The star light is from Ikea, and the tissue
paper pompom and lantern were decora-
tions at my wedding.
BedroomI like dressing our bed with mix-and-
match floral print pillowcases; these are
from Rosehip and have a lovely handmade
crochet edging. I use a white duvet cover so
the pillows and cushions stand out, and I
layer the bottom of the bed with knitted
blankets and vintage eiderdowns.
If I chip a favorite mug, I can’t bringmyself to throw it away, so I give it a newuse. I have reused a polka-dot lavender mugas a penholder on my desk.

fenced-in garden with this flat, com-
plete with a lawn and patio. I bought
the French metal table and chairs set

cloth using my vintage fabric. In the
summer, I hang bunting made from
hankies across the walls and arrange
flowers in a mix of jugs and recycled
jam jars on the table.
Dave and I are both keen cyclists. I recently bought this beautiful vintage-style Beg Bike, which I
love riding into town to do some shopping.

Florals &Fabrics
Learn about Selina’s collection of bloom-covered fabrics, both
old and new.
I’m a huge fan of florals, from freshly cutblooms to old, botanical rose prints—Ilove them all. For me, mismatched floralfabrics are pure delight.
BUYING OLD & NEW:I enjoy buying fabrics and comfortersfrom different eras at fairs and markets.New fabrics can be just as good, andFancy Moon has a large range of floraldesigns. New fabrics are good for largerprojects such as curtains and bedspreads, since you are able to buy in yards. I’m afan of Liberty as well as Grand RevivalDesigns by Tanya Whelan.
FINDING USES:I like to sew my own mismatched napkinsfrom off-cuts and smaller swatches. Withlarger pieces I make cushions and teatowels, back cupboards, or use them astablecloths. Some fabrics I buy I can’t bringmyself to cut up to remake something, soI fold them neatly and display them in apile on top of my filing cabinet.

out. Pipe 3 concentric rows of frosting,
pivoting the cupcake with your fingers
as necessary.
3. (optional) To attach the ring, use a
toothpick to press the piece of extra rib-
bon into the center of the cupcake.
These cupcakes are a sweet addition to any party. Attach the engage-ment ring favors for a bridal shower. For amore general gathering of friends, simplypipe a rose to create a cupcake that looksas good as it tastes.
The Pink Rose cupcakes were provided by Paris in a Cup Tea Salon, andthe dish was made by the Italian CeramicsCompany, Portofino, Italy.
Directions:1. Cut and bake French poodle-shaped
cookies and allow them to cool.
2. Frost them with a pink or white
icing glaze and allow an hour for dry-
ing. Place a #1 decorating tip on a
pastry bag, and fill the bag with glaze.
3. Make some squiggles with the icing
to form the poodle’s ears and fur.
4. Top with the white sanding sugar,
and place the bow on the ear while the
glaze is still wet. Allow the glaze to dry
for an hour.
5. Attach an edible eye with a dot of
the glaze, and use a small paintbrush
or toothpick to paint the nose with
black food coloring.

Finger SandwichesThe vintage-style finger sandwiches are
displayed on Rosanna’s Rococo cake
plate. My grandmother’s pink head vase
filled with roses makes the perfect center-
piece for the setting.
Freeze the bread before cutting
out shapes with cookie cutters and
adding your fillings. Once the bread de-
frosts it is very difficult to spread fillings,
especially onto the narrow ring pieces.
Heart Sandwiches
You will need:• Heart cookie cutters, one large and
one small
• Bread
• Butter
• Filling
Directions:1. Use the larger cutter to create two
hearts out of the frozen bread, also cut-
ting a smaller heart out of the top piece
of bread. Butter the inside of both slices
before placing your filling on the larger,
bottom slice of bread and adding the
top of the sandwich.
Wedding Bells
You will need:• Bell cookie cutter
• Bread
• Butter
• Soft cream cheese
• Thinly sliced cucumbers
• Parsley
• Pastry bag
• #104 decorating tip
Directions:1. Prepare the cucumbers and fill the
pastry bag with soft cream cheese
in advance.
2. Cut out two bells for each sandwich
and butter the inside of each piece be-
fore spreading a layer of softened cheese
on the bottom slice.
3. Top with thinly sliced cucumbers and
place the second piece of bread on top.
Using a #104 tip, pipe rows of cream-
cheese ruffles on top of the bell and
garnish with a small piece of parsley
as shown.
The wedding bell cutter is perfect
for a bridal shower, especially with
this piping technique reminiscent of the
popular honeycomb bells of the 1950s.
Double Rings
You will need:• Two round cookie cutters, large
and small
• White and wheat bread
• Butter
• Soft filling, such as cucumber or
raspberry jam
Directions:1. Use the larger cutter to cut four circles
out of frozen bread, two from each type
of bread. Use the smaller cutter to cut
out the middles, leaving rings.
2. When you have four rings, spread
butter on the inside of each piece and
carefully spread your filling on one ring
from each type of bread.
3. Combine the two types of bread into
a single ring; then cut a straight line
through one set of rings. To form
double rings, twist the cut ring to attach
through the center of the other ring.
Finger sandwiches can be made in
advance and stored in the
refrigerator. To keep them moist and
fresh, place a slightly dampened tea
towel over the sandwich.

Kymberley Fraser was not new to the
world of home décor when she expanded
into retail. What began as importing
vintage and antique European textiles
under the name of 3 Fine Grains became a
custom line of furniture, linens and more,
which expanded to require a store of its
own. Her shop, A Beautiful Mess Home,
has been in business for four years.
“I carefully curate every item that comes
into my store as well as collaborate with
artists and makers on pieces being created,”
Kymberley says.
Visitors to her Agoura Hills shop are
greeted with unique finds displayed in
curated vignettes. Kymberley describes her
shop’s aesthetic as being modern rustic and
has intentionally displayed her products in
a way that “allows clients to envision pieces
and incorporate them into their already
established homes.”
Kymberley prefers to use a neutral,
earthy color palette in her designs and in
her shop. The result is a bright and inviting
space that shows character and charm
through unique accents of color. Color is
not the only way Kymberley draws people
into her shop. Her displays contain
intriguing, individual sections filled with
treasures. “I try to be thought provoking—
blending the practical with the decorative
based on how they complement one
another,” Kymberley says.
A Beautiful Mess Home’s stylishly
curated collection features everything from
artisan jewelry to antique glassware, unique
furnishings to one-of-a-kind art and every-
thing in between.
With years of experience asa designer,
“My favorite item in my store isalways that one-of-a-kind find that
I’ve come across that makes peoplestop in their tracks.”

One designer seeks to create notjust homes but personal paradises.
come true
RH-1409-78-80-PAGES1.qxp 7/7/14 4:55 AM Page 78
Architect and interiordesigner Robert Couturier has
designed spaces both big and small,
from 20,000-acre romantic estates to
minimalistic and modern apartments. A
selection of his projects in his new book,
Designing Paradises, offers inspiration
on creating your fantasy home.
Robert explains that his job is “to help
people dream, to make those dreams
reality, and to transform abstract ideas
into concrete creations.” Thanks to his
multifaceted experiences, Robert is able
to work with any style and in his book
shares tips for your home.
PERSONALITY CHECKAlways design for yourself. Don’t try
to incorporate 18th-century paintings
or sprawling tapestries if they don’t fit
into your aesthetic.
SENSIBLE DESIGNRobert takes a holistic approach to
interior design by considering how a
home stimulates the five human senses.
All must be held in equal regard, from
“the feel of upholstery under the hand”
to “the subtle hints of perfume and
smoldering ash.”
IN THE RIGHT MOODIt’s true that the colors of a room
influence its overall atmosphere, but
there is an additional element that has
Opposite: Robert’s bright andairy living room features a mix of traditional French furniture and contempo-rary 20th-century design arranged in perfect symmetry.
Top: Originally a dark, enclosedspace, Robert’s stairway became a pleasant gallery through an indoor landingwith large windows.
Right: Mixing eras and styles cancreate a pleasing contrast. In Robert’sbedroom, an early American highboychest is paired with a contemporarygoatskin-covered stool.

Robert’s favorite room in his home is the massive, 17-foot tall living room modeled after the French countryhouses he grew up in. Draw from Robert’s design tobring a romantic look into your home.
STICK TO A THEME. The green-and-gold-striped fabric isused for both the drapes and the upholstery. The crownmolding and window frame are painted in the sameshade of green, creating a cohesive look.
BALANCE. Decorating a room around symmetry is visuallypleasing and helps keep a room from looking cluttered. From throw pillows to twin paintings on the wall, every element has a perfect placement.
LET LIGHT IN. Nothing brightens up a room like naturalsunlight. Light also freshens a room and keeps it fromfeeling old.
NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE GRAND. Simplicitycan be just as striking. The walls in Robert’s living roomare deliberately kept sparse to draw more focus to theview of the gardens and lake outside.
the same effect: emotion. Think
about what feelings are motivating
your ideas for décor before you
implement them. “Even a pink
room created in sadness will be a
sad room,” Robert says.
GOOD IS BETTER THAN PERFECT
A perfectionist himself, Robert
has encountered frustrating dilem-
mas involving very particular details
of the construction and design of a
home. However, he has learned that
it is better to let the little things go
instead of getting so wrapped up in
creating absolute perfection that the
project is never completed.
LEAVE ROOM TO GROWAs time passes, your tastes will
most likely change and evolve. A
house may also feel different
depending on the time of day and
the season. Keeping flexibility in
design will allow you to make
adjustments accordingly.

Whether you live in a historicor new house, taking cues from the archi-
tecture of the past can lend a sense of ro-
mance and timelessness to your home.
Honoring the career of tradition-loving
architect Norman Davenport Askins, in
the book Inspired by Tradition, Susan Sully
has photographed the architect’s work and
shared his advice on how to strike a beau-
tiful balance between styles of the past and
the needs of modern life.
FRAMING AN ERAThe placement and style of windows in
forms of architecture that predate electrici-
ty and air conditioning fulfilled a different
set of needs, but incorporating traditional-
ly inspired windows into your home can
be practical and beautiful. While you can
enjoy modern amenities, a kitchen, living

room or even bath with light pouring in
through a period-inspired window adds
to the overall character of your home in
addition to allowing fresh breezes.
MINDING THE DETAILSBuilding materials can also evoke a
certain era and style. Using reclaimed
wood for ceiling beams creates a farm-
house feel, while a marble sink evokes a
sense of luxury and elegance. An
engraved mantelpiece or gilded mirror
recalls the Victorian or Georgian eras,
especially when paired with floor-
length curtains.
However strictly or loosely you adhere
to a period’s style, keep in mind your
own needs for the space, and don’t be
afraid to add touches of personality.
“Buildings that are informed by tradition
need to be precise, but,” Askins says,
“they also need to be as quirky as the
people who create and live in them.”
After all, your home is where you live, in
the present even as you continue the
traditions of the past.

Sully gives a window into Askins’philosophy on integrating traditionalstyle in modern living.
APPROPRIATENESS: Find what elements matter the most to you, maybe a certain kind of material orproportion of windows, and thenbuild your design around those essentials. “The fun part is knowingonce you’ve set the rules, you canalso break them—as long as you doit the right way,” Askins says.
LOGIC: In addition to having windowsthat work with nature rather thanagainst it, logic in design means think-ing about how the space will be used.High ceilings, for example, can make aspace feel lonely or off balance if it’sjust used by a few people. Or if periodfurniture isn’t suited to your lifestyle, you could use modern furniture thatshares some uniting element withthe space instead.
CONTINUITY: Especially if you’re adhering to a certain period or style, elements that all work together willmake your home feel authentic. Butyou can still incorporate unexpectedtwists and personality. Cohesion isimportant, but don’t let it stifle you.Equally a part of Askins’ philosophyis the need for creativity: “If a houselacks imagination, romance, intrigue, drama, and a little bit of fun, the design falls flat,” he says.
