Notes from the Editor By
Shaun Rogers
Welcome back to our 2014 digital Staffordshire Surge Magazine that will accompany our 2014 home game’s.
Today we start our season off with a tough game vs Chester Romans a team who last year
won the division and went on to the Playoffs so a great team for us to test our new team.
The season ended last August but for the Committee that was when the 2014 year started.
The progression of trying to recruit new Rookie players to come in and join our team
started the moment the final whistle went at Shropshire. Also over the off season we have
had many a change to the Surge committee with myself been privileged enough to earn a
spot on the committee as the clubs Director of media & communications a role in which I
hope I have shown that the team means a lot to me.
In November we held our first of 4 Rookie Try out session not knowing if we would have 10
players or 40 players we had over the course of the 4 sessions 60+ new players come along
and show an interest in both the sport and the club which was great for us to see that the
sport in the UK does have such a good following.
We have also changed where we train and we have now been able this year to train on a
new 3G surface at St Peters Academy in Fenton, which has meant that the players have
been able to train even in the poor conditions that the UK has been hit with this year.
We have also added to our 2014 coaching staff with the full additions of ex player Mark
Finney and Defensive coach Jason Smith, who have joined our already great back room
coaching staff.
These are just some snippets of what has happened over the coming weeks we will discuss
more of where the Surge is trying to go in 2014.
So for now I hope you enjoy today’s game and lets hope we get all players safe off the
pitch at the end of the game for both teams.
GoSurge
Notes from the Head Coach By
John Farmiloe
Welcome to our first game magazine of the 2014 BAFANL season. We are kicking off the new
season against our old rivals, the Chester Romans, who we first played in 1996. Our games
with the Romans are always competitive and the Surge has been looking forward to playing
last years Midland Conference champions.
In 1993 after the demise of the Stoke Spitfires, five of their former players travelled to
Chester every Sunday to continue playing. During those journeys we started to talk about the
possibility of starting a new team in Stoke. At the end of the season we proposed to Chester
having a game with a scratch team made up of former Spitfire players. The success of this
game gave us the impetus to form a new club, the Staffordshire Surge, which has now played
twenty seasons in British American Football.
With the growth in polarity of the sport in Britain, the Staffordshire Surge is aiming to get
more people into American football. New players and supporters are welcome to join us and
if you want to get involved please contact us.
The Surge’s preparations for this season have seen the club make great progress in its
management, facilities, recruitment, coaching and training. This has been due to the
commitment of all those involved in striving to improve our club. We now look forward to
another season of this exciting team sport.
Regards,
John Farmiloe
Staffordshire Surge Head Coach
“J.B Services at Fenton,
Want to wish the Surge the
very best for the 2014 season”
Notes from the Chairman By
Stuart Beech
Hello and thank you for joining us today.
This is my first season as chairman of the Staffordshire Surge and I can't remember
being so excited about a season as this one. Having rejoined the team back in 2010, I
have been on the committee and feel that all the hard work over the past 4 seasons
by all the committee members and players behind the scenes is finally starting to
show on the pitch and as a club as a whole.
Last season I feel the club had relayed a solid foundation and this year we have been
able to start building off them around a solid core of player and committee members.
Since the end of last season we have been hard at work arranging - rookie tryout
sessions, new training ground 3G pitch with storage, new sponsorships for game
pants , signing up new and former coaches, setting up a new web site , buying new
club equipment, streamlining the club payment system, marketing the club, 2 pre-
season season scrimmage , social evenings and laying the ground work for setting up
a new youth team.
All in all I think that the future of the Surge is looking good and we hope to keep on
improving. If you want to help out or have any ideas which might help please contact
us.
Thank you
Stuart Beech
Staffordshire Surge American Football Team Chairman

New to the Game

American Football
Staffordshire Surge is here to Help
We don’t want you sitting there on the sidelines today thinking what is going on,
why do they keep stopping play ?, why are they all kneeling down ?, how many
points do they get for that kick ?, why are they cheering him running into the large
area at the end ?
Yes these are all comments I have overheard in my time watching the Surge so let’s
hope we can help you out. In this issue we are going to look at how the Surge will
line up on the pitch and the basics of the game.
Positions
Offence
QB – Quarterback, HB - Half Back/Running Back, FB - Full Back
TE - Tight End, WR - Wide Receiver, OL - Offensive Linesman
C - Centre
Defence
DL - Defensive Lineman, LB - Line Backer, DB - Defensive Back
So let’s take to the field and find out what all the markings mean.
Each team must make 10 yard’s to get a 1st down, and must make the ball go past (even if its just the
tip of the ball) the goalline to score a Touchdown.
So what are the lines in the middle they are Hash marks and on the next page we learn more about
the Yard Lines and the Hash Marks.
Yard lines
Yard lines, at intervals of 5 yards, run parallel to the goal lines and are
marked across the field from sideline to sideline. These lines stop 8 inches short of the 6-foot solid
border in the NFL.
Yard lines give players and fans an idea of how far a team must advance the ball in order to record a
first down. As Chapter 3 explains in detail, an offensive team must gain 10 yards in order to post a
first down. Consequently, every 10 yards, starting from the goal lines, the field is numbered in
multiples of 10. In the NFL, the bottoms of these numbers are placed 12 yards from each sideline.
The numbers 10, 20, 30, 40, and one 50-yard line are 2 yards in length. All these lines and numbers
are white.
Hash marks
Hash marks mark each yard line 70 feet, 9 inches from the sidelines in the NFL.
Two sets of hash marks (each hash is 1 yard in length) run parallel
to each other down the length of the field and are approximately 181⁄2 feet apart. When the ball
carrier is either tackled or pushed out of bounds, the officials return the ball in-bounds to the closest
hash mark to where it’s spotted.
Punted balls that go out of bounds are also marked on the nearest hash mark.
Player Interview
The First of our 2014 Player Interviews is with the Surge Linebacker
Jason Pearce
Name : Jason Pearce
Position on the field : Linebacker
How many years playing American Football : This is my second season
What got you into playing the game : I was going to start playing rugby and when I was talking to a friend about my
closest team to where I live he said he didn't know any but read in the paper that the surge were looking for players
How did you hear about the Surge : A friend spotted the add in the local paper
Best game you have played in for the Surge : Manchester Titans away (second half)
Worst game you have played in for the Surge : Crewe Railroaders at home
Think back to the first time you turned up for training what advice would you now give yourself : Try harder to get fitter,
learn as much about the game as you can
What do you feel is your best strength out on the field : That I don't quit on my team I put in 100%
Who is your NFL team : Seahawks
Who is your College Team : Virginia Tech
If you are not playing American football what else do you do : Playing English football
What advice would you give a Rookie joining the Surge : Don't give up until you give it a chance, get involved with your
team mates.. Listen to the veterans and the coaches
Focus on the
Chester Romans
Today we welcome the 2013 National Central Division Champions the Chester
Romans to our home field.
Chester had a strong 2013 season finishing there league campaign with a 9-1
record with there only loss coming against the Merseyside Nighthawks (47-13)
they then went onto the playoffs where they come up against Clyde Valley
Blackhawks winning them 30-15 and moving onto the next game where they
were just one step away from BritBowl day, but they met up with the strong
side in the Gateshead Senators and lost 22-50 to them in the final game of
there very successful season.
Last year Chester only played us the once and was at there home field where
they come out on top 57-26 in which the Romans showed why they had won
our divisional title with a very, very strong performance.
“Victory Lane Awards, wish the Staffordshire Surge a successful season”
Interview with the Chester Romans Players
In Each Magazine we aim to try and get as much information on our
opponents as we can and today we get to speak with a few of the 2014
Chester Romans roster.
First up we speak with Line Backer Danny Cotton
Name : Danny Cotton
Position : Line Backer
Squad No : 58
How many years playing American Football : 7th season (this year)
What got you into the game : Got into the game by watching NFL and it looked like great fun and saw an advert for the
romans in the paper and I’ve been here ever since!
Worst feeling since playing American Football : My worst feeling was the loss to Edinburgh in the 2012 playoffs. It seemed
like everything was against us that day. We made mistakes and you cant give the Wolves half a chance as they're a VERY
well drilled squad but it gave a lot of the veteran guys the drive to get back into it. I love Don and the Edinburgh crew but
that one hurt.
Who is your NFL team : My NFL team is the Seattle Seahawks. First team I ever saw. Im glad I stuck with them.
How do you feel the 2013 season went for your team : I think 2013 was amazing (with the glaring exceptions) . As a team it
was, I believe statistically our best year. We really pulled together and looked out for each other. We really became a band
of brothers. But we had fun. Too many guys nowadays put too much pressure in themselves and it can ruin things quickly.
What do you hope to see from the team in the 2014 season : This season could go either way im optimistic. We still have a
good core of guys from last year and a few retirements but we have had more rookies than ever as well. And its more
important I think that we get these guys who potentially are the future, ready.
Best place you have played American football at : My favourite places are obviously Chester Rugby. I genuinely think its one
of the better grounds in the league and I like Blackburn RUFC also.. home of the Blackswarm
Which player should we keep an eye out for in the game from the Chester Romans : Two guys to look out for this season #34
Ash Wainwright he is a beast and #22 Matt Hyndman and #18 Nadgy Khirat. Both very, very good DB's and poses a threat
to any QB
(Picture courtesy of Chester Romans Website)
Second up is Defensive End Phil Bailey
Name : Phil Bailey
Position : Defensive End
Squad No : 92
How many years playing American Football : In total 9yrs with a break of 15yrs.
What got you into the game : Watching my brother play in the late 80s sparked a love for the game, then watching a player
called Laurence Taylor for the NY Giants, I instantly wanted to play the game.
Best game you have played : Romans –v- Manchester Titans 2013, Waited a long time to play against the Titans.
Worst memory of playing American Football : Loosing the Semi final to Gateshead Senators last year (2013) was my worst
memory.
Who is your NFL team : NY Giants, solely because of the great LT.
How do you feel the 2013 season went for your team : Went well, we were total underdogs, nobody expected us to top the
division, we were just gutted to loose the semi final game.
What do you hope to see from the team in the 2014 season : Hopefully take it a step further and reach the Britbowl, though
teams will be after our head this year so its going to be tough.
Best place you have played American football at : Back in the 90s a team called the Redditch Arrows played in a big athletics
stadium, was an amazing atmosphere.
Which player should we keep an eye out for in the game from the Chester Romans : Great player Ash Wainwright #34
(Picture courtesy of Chester Romans Website)
Next in the opposing Interview seat is Linebacker #54 Scott Gillham
Name : Scott Gillham or 'Gilly' to the Romans
Position : Linebacker
Squad No : 54
How many years playing American Football : 4 years, captain for 2
What got you into the game : I played the Madden Games and then starting following the NYG
Best game you have played : Best game I played on a personal level was beating Manchester titans in 2013 for the first time
in my career, on a team level it was progressing to the national semi- finals, also in 2013
Worst memory of playing American Football : My worst memory would sadly be our defeat to Gateshead senators in the
previously mentioned semi- final, I think we had a bad day at the office and could have put on a much better showing.
Who is your NFL team : New York giants
How do you feel the 2013 season went for your team : I believe 2013 on the whole was a good year for the Romans and we
proved a lot of teams and people wrong, but to get so near to the premiership to lose (in the way we did) was heart
breaking
What do you hope to see from the team in the 2014 season : Our goal for 2014 is simple. 1 word, Bowl. Simple as that. It's the
only way we can improve I believe.
Best place you have played American football at : I think I would have to say Meadowbank stadium in Edinburgh, which I
believe was once used in the commonwealth games. A great venue with a massive stand.
Which player should we keep an eye out for in the game from the Chester Romans : I'm not really a fan of singling out specific
players, but what I will say is watch out for our defense, we have some big playmakers, some hard hitters and some all out
heroes on our side of the ball.

The British American Football Referees'
Association
The officials for 99% of American Football games played in Britain are all members of BAFRA, the British American Football Referees' Association.
BAFRA was founded in 1984 to provide officials for the then fledgling sport. In the early days the majority of its members were US military personnel stationed in the UK but now the membership is almost entirely British.
The Association's aims are five-fold:
1. To improve the standard of officiating by training and examination, and by any other means 2. To enable all American football games in Britain to have neutral officials 3. To promote and uphold the status of officials both collectively and individually 4. To co-operate and to cultivate good relations with all bodies concerned with American football, for the
betterment of the game 5. To take such action or make such representation as an Association, or in conjunction with others as
may be considered desirable, in the interests of American football in Britain in general or for the benefit of officials and officiating in particular
BAFRA covers several hundred games at all levels, including senior (over 18), college and youth games. Through the International Federation of American Football, BAFRA also provides officials for tournaments on the continent.
If you are interested in Joining BAFRA visit the website
